Quiet Evenings We have been continuing with our Quiet Evenings in Church, 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. one Monday evening a month, usually on the third Monday of the month, but it would be wise to check with Josh Griffiths first. In April the third Monday, because of Easter, clashes with Gardening Club so our Quiet Evening will be on 30th April. The format is half an hour’s contemplation listening to Gregorian Chant in the candlelit Church followed by a short service of Compline.

Church News Pancake Evening
It seems a long time ago, but we are still in Lent. Tremendous thanks to Nigel and Wendy for a very hospitable evening and for all of you for coming. Just over £500 was raised, of which £275 went to the Northern Cleft Foundation. The Doctor from North Wales who goes out to India spoke to us and told us how many operations they performed. The rest of the money will be used to help meet the Church’s running expenses.

Monthly Recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE
Rhubarb and Ginger Muffins Rhubarb is wonderful at this time of year and lots of us have a clump in our gardens. It makes lovely moist cakes and as with all muffins these are quick and easy. 450g self raising flour 200g soft brown sugar 125g butter 2 eggs 254 ml tub of buttermilk 200g rhubarb (chopped into cubes of about 1cm) Ginger - we use 2 pieces of chopped stem ginger but 1 teaspoon dried ginger will do 1 teaspoon sugar (demerara is best but any will do) 1 teaspoon cinnamon to sprinkle over top (optional) Sieve flour and mix with sugar. Rub in butter to create a crumbed mixture Add rhubarb and ginger and mix Combine eggs & buttermilk in bowl and add to dry mixture. Stir carefully - it is important not to over stir muffin mix - stop as soon as ingredients are mixed. It should look lumpy. Spoon into paper cases in muffin tin. Bake at 190 C, 170C fan oven gas mark 6 for about 20 minutes. Muffins should be soft and bouncy when touched lightly. Each month Jane from Caffi Florence shares one of her secret recipes from the menu at the Cafe. We’d also like to have contributions from other readers, so if you’d like to share one of your recipes with the rest of us - please send it in to newsandviews@llanferres.org, phone us on 810566 or post to 2 Cae Gwyn, Llanferres

Nature Notes Many years ago an old gardener said to me; "I've known years with early springs and I've known years with late springs, but come June they are all the same". Over time I have come to realise the wisdom of his words for nature has a habit of rectifying climatic anomalies. This year is a case in point because, even though early February was very cold and we are told that we have had the coldest winter for eighteen years, events are happening at the same time as last year. For example, 1 saw my first bumblebee on 28th February - it was the buff-tailed Bombus terrestris, our largest and usually the first to come out of hibernation and they are now quite common. Violets, wood anemones, moschatel and other wild flowers seem to be blooming at their usual time and wild daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) are flowering right on cue. 1 recorded my first chiffchaff on the morning of 17th March and my first wheatear, on the moors, in the afternoon - both the same date as last year. It is at this time of year that the moors come to life. Summer migrants such as wheatears and ring ouzels arrive from their wintering quarters in Africa; meadow pipits, skylarks, stonechats and perhaps hen harriers return from the coastal salt marshes; before long cuckoos, grasshopper warblers and other migrants will be there and, of course the black grouse will be 'lekking'. This spectacular display is
something to behold, when the males (blackcock) 'strut their stuff' to impress the females (brown hens). With guttural-sneezing grunts and a bubbling call, which drifts across the moor and can be heard from a considerable distance, the males posture and swagger displaying their red wattles and fanning their tails to exhibit the white under-feathers. They engage in mock fights to show the hens how tough they are but to see this spectacle it is necessary to get up very early in the morning. We are fortunate that the black grouse population is increasing on Moel Famau where 17 males were recorded last year (the best count ever) and on the Llandegla moors there are reputed to be 73 males scattered over a wide area. The males are counted to give an indication of the population as the females, being brown and inconspicuous in the heather, are impossible to count. Have you ever wondered why bird droppings always appear white (especially when they splatter the windscreen)? A child recently asked me "If birds 'poo' when they are flying, do they also 'wee' when they are flying? The two questions are related. Birds excrete urine at the same time as they defecate and it is the uric acid that imparts the white colour to the droppings. It is also corrosive, so it is worth washing it off the car bodywork as soon as possible.

The diary of Christine Evans’ last ever Urolink trip to Week 3: Saturday 15th November to Saturday 22nd November I set off by bus to Livingstone which is close to the Zambian / Zimbabwe border - the roads for the last 60 miles are appalling but are being resurfaced though very slowly. I visited the magnificent Victoria Falls which is still a haven for tourists and there were plenty, all using US dollars or South African rand. I took a taxi to the border and discovered I had lost my UK mobile phone sim card at Victoria Falls, what a nuisance! It was loose in my bumbag, as my phone would not work with the UK sim card and so I had bought a Zambian one. I had to email Ruth back at home later to cancel it.
with some difficulty to get a first class couchette. I only had an economy ticket but the train inspector would not let me go in the ordinary carriage - he said I would be robbed at knifepoint! So I was put in a couchette with three women who were returning with 30 loaves of white sliced bread (amongst many other things), to barter in Bulawayo. Needless to say, the carriage was packed especially with my two suitcases. My fellow travellers were happy The first 4th year people but in dire straits. Bulawayo M The train was even smellier than last year and the corridor door onto the track would not close and so stayed open all night.
I then travelled from the border to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and managed The journey took 14 hours and upon arrival in Bulawayo I was met by Hassan Ashmawy (consultant urologist) who was delighted to see me. I had heard reports that the hospitals were closed and the doctors and nurses were on strike. Their monthly pay is equal to half a US dollar and they cannot afford to travel to work. Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique November 2008
The senior doctors and management have all been given unlicensed brand new cars as a bribe from Robert Mugabe to stay and work in the country and I would use one as well. There are now many Chinese in the country. I spent five days in Bulawayo giving basic science lectures to the first clinical students in the new medical school. There were twelve in all - very bright and enthusiastic, so we did clinical physiology. I medical students in was pre-warned by Professor Enweren, the secMedical School ond urologist who is in charge of the clinical programme that he struggles to find lecturers as there is no general surgeon now in the Bulawayo government run hospitals. Being pre-warned, Professor Labib had given me his teaching courses for the trainee surgeons, aren't laptops and flash discs a boon! We saw a patient, on the almost empty wards, with an extremely well managed tension pneumothorax, so they are doing better in Zimbabwe than in Zambia. I gave my last Caverject injections to give a young man, with a membranous urethral stricture (narrowing of the water pipe). He had his first erection for 3 years and there was enough for him to take
a small supply home. As you can imagine, he was delighted but where he will be able to get more from, I have no idea. It was a pleasant week with great hospitality of the Ashmawys and friends. We ate well despite the lack of food in the shops and the water was on this year but not for all people. The local kids were drinking from the puddles in the road, as torrential rains came. I met up with Washington Sansole, my judge friend, for a drink at the Holiday Inn. He says Mugabe considers himself immortal. The queues at the banks were miles long as you can only take out 500,000 Zim dollars out a day, worth half a US dollar. They

Llanferres Senior Citizens. March meeting We all enjoyed the talk by Christine Evans about her work helping and supporting the Medical profession in developing countries. To hear at first hand of the dreadful conditions some of the people are living under, and how the doctors and hospital staff cope, made me(for one)think I'm very fortunate. Next month's meeting is on Tuesday April 14th at 2.00pm in the Village Hall. Mr Patrick Austin will talk about the origins and work of the Rotary Club. Cllr. Christine’s Monthly Update I love this time of year, waking up in the daylight at last with birds twittering away, precariously perched on the loose telephone wire outside my window, daffodils and lambs arriving. My homelessness works are still happening. I am now proficient at driving the soup van which is accompanied twice a week with the needle exchange van. Blue Bags Bulletin!!! The last collection of “Blue Bags” from Ysgol Bro Famau, Llanferres in January was a great success. They took away over 700kg which resulted in
£284.00 Many, many thanks to everyone who brought stuff along. There will be another collection around 15th July – date to be confirmed. The blue bags will be circulated in June, but don’t worry if you don’t get one – a CLEAN bin bag will do fine. If you have any queries about the collection, or difficulty getting your bag(s) to school, please phone Fran on 01352 810261 Bag2School is interested in collecting good quality adults’ and children's clothing, bedding, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and handbags. All items are for RE-USE. No Bric a Brac please Money being raised by the PTFA for the school at the moment is going towards a new maths learning scheme and new sports equipment. The support we get from parents and the wider community is vital – so thank you again. If you wish to find out more about the Bag2School scheme – their web address is: www.bag2school.com

Maeshafn Cricket Club It is all go in the Maeshafn CC camp, as we gear up to a new season in our dual locations of Nercwys and Shotton. Still plenty of time to get involved - just come along to our training sessions at Nercwys.
against local sides already arranged.
April diary is as follows:
1. Occasionally borrowing a trailer capable of carrying a ride-on mower from Llanferres/Maeshafn to Nercwys for pre-match grass cutting work. Should be about 5-7 such occasions during the season when Flintshire CC fail to keep the grass to less than 12 inches long (this actually occurred last summer!).
12th April 3.00pm - outdoor practice, Nercwys Playing Field. All welcome. 15th April Practice - Nercwys School, 5.30pm onwards. 19th April Maeshafn CC v Carmel CC, Friendly match, Nercwys. 22nd April Practice - Nercwys School, 6.00pm onwards. 26th April Corwen CC 2nds v Maeshafn CC, League game, Away. 29th April Practice - Nercwys School, 6.00pm onwards. 2nd May Maeshafn CC v Liverpool Diocese, Friendly match, Shotton. 6th May Practice - Nercwys School, 6.00pm onwards. 9th May Maeshafn CC v Castell Alun CC 2nds, League game, Shotton.
We still need more players, and are also on the lookout for the following:
2. A scorer - full training provided if required. Ask Sean Thomas for details on how easy this job really is. 3. An umpire - has to be impartial and not give all our players out LBW.
We would be happy to play the LAMBs, any company teams or anyone else from any local villages or pubs - we have plenty of WednesLifts available to all training days free this year for friendly sessions from Llanferres and matches. Feel free to get in touch. Maeshafn. Happy to provide equipment but will be using wooden balls. Independent garages to lose their servicing role? EU legislation is currently under review to require all cars to be serviced and repaired by an official main dealer, or approved franchise, in 2010. This means that you may not have the choice of using a local
independent garage for your car servicing and repairs! There is more information on www.r2rc.co.uk and a chance to sign a petition in protest. (Thanks to Ian Logan for the tip off.)
