Local news On Thursday 22nd April the funeral of John Edward Roberts, aged 89, took place at St. Berres Church and after at Pentrebychan crematorium, Wrexham. John lived in Llanferres for most of his married life and was a key figure in many village activities. He served as a community councillor for over 40 years and was a founder member of the Village Hall Management Committee. Until very recently he was still receiving bookings for the Hall. He was an avid gardener, an active member of the gardening club, well renowned in Llanferres and beyond for continually winning numerous trophies for his produce in our local show. Over 150 mourners attended John’s funeral, reflecting the high esteem in which he was held by the local community. Donations in memory of John were given to the British Heart Foundation, with a total of £530 being donated, testimony John’s popularity. Our thoughts and prayers are with Glynys, their children, grandchildren and all his family. He will be sadly missed.

Llanferres Over 60's Club Llanferres Over 60's CLUB On March 13th we had an interesting talk given by Mr Philpott who last year spoke to us about "The Plight of the Albatross". Both times he showed lovely pictures and this time told us about life in the Vatican. It was so interesting to hear about the two parts: "Vatican City" itself and the Pope's residence and world headquarters of Catholics. The April meeting is on Tuesday 10th when Mr Mark Baker is going to talk (with pictures) about Prince Charles and his houses We missed having a Welsh Day in March so are having Welsh cakes and Daffodils this time instead! Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our meeting held on March 12th had a lecture entitled "Our Moral Obligations" to quarries and mines - not an exciting title but what an inspirational story. In his talk, Noel Williams gave an explanation of his experiences in Kenya and how they have been translated into his work on local quarries at the end of their productive life. The quarry faces are blasted and shaped to take larger expanses of trees, soil and flora "en masse" to enable quicker regeneration to take place. Working with Gerry Lucas at Edgehill University, results show that the resulting establishment of flora and the return of wildlife - particularly bird species - is enhanced. Once again an excellent talk by an enthusiast in his field of work. Our next meeting is on Monday April 16th when the club will visit The Old Rectory at Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr by kind permission of Mr and Mrs E. T. Hughes. We intend to leave in convoy from Llanferres at 6.30pm prompt. The charge will be ÂŁ6.50 to include entrance and refreshments. Non-members are welcome by phoning the secretary. Thank you.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE There has been a lot in the press in recent weeks about the need to eat less red meat, so it seemed appropriate to do a veggie recipe this month. This is a very flexible dish and you can easily swap the combination of vegetables or indeed omit the chick peas. The dumplings are in fact very light and provide carbohydrate for the meal, so all you need to add is a nice green veg such as kale or purple sprouting broccoli which are wonderful at the moment,
Vegetable Casserole with cheese dumplings 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion chopped 2 sticks of celery 3 carrots diced ½ swede or sweet potato 2 leeks tin chick peas tin of tomatoes 300ml vegetable stock or water For the dumplings 125g SR flour 25g butter, marg or vegetable suet 50g grated cheese ½ tsp mustard ½ tsp paprika 4 tbsp milk chopped herbs Salt & pepper Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large saucepan. Add the chopped vegetables and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add chick peas, tomatoes and stock and bring to the boil. Continue to simmer on hob or place in casserole dish with a lid in an oven at 170C and cook for 40 minutes. For dumplings, rub fat into flour. Add remaining dry ingredients, add milk and mix to

Community Council News - March Meeting From the minutes of the March meeting:All Councillors were present. County Councillor Christine Evans reported that the purchase of an acre of land adjacent to Loggerheads Country Park to be developed as a car park was progressing. The 'Drop In' session on 'How to Become Councillor' would be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 10th March as advertised in the News and Views. The Chairman reported that the signing of the papers and the handing over of the ÂŁ8,000 cheque for the purchase of the field adjacent to the Village Hall and School would take place the following day (Friday 9th). He also reported that Llanferres Playing Field and Recreation Association had given the Community Council ÂŁ4,000 to assist with the purchase and/or development of the field. The Chairman commended the work of the Council Clerk, Mrs Gwyneth Dillon, in facilitating the purchase and producing the high quality presentation documents which had been well received by Denbighshire County Council. The maintenance of the name plate in Cae Derwen was not the responsibility of Denbighshire County Council as the road had not yet been adopted. The highways department had, so far, not been able to come to an agreement with the builders. The notice board at Loggerheads had been temporally repaired. It was reported that a downspout on the bus shelter in Llanferres had been broken from its mountings. It would be repaired.
Quotes were to be obtained for the landscaping of the memorial stone. Planning matters:- 21/2012/0158. Proposal; Erection of detached garden room and store. Location: 2 Tyddyn Daws, Cadole. It was resolved to raise no objections. 21/2007/0344. Revisions to detailing of development relating to public footpath link to Llanferres Church Housing scheme at Glebe Land Rectory Lane. The Community Council was not prepared to treat this as a minor amendment. The Council noted that the Church Commissioners are to maintain the path and hedge and it was felt that that there should be a 3m gate and a 'kissing gate' at Rectory Lane and at the Cemetery end of the path. The Council reserved the right to be consulted on any other amendments. Acquisition of the playing field in Maeshafn is still ongoing but there has been progress in the negotiations. LDP. Denbighshire County Council is still negotiating with the inspector regarding the number of houses to be built in Denbighshire up to 2021. A question was raised about the legality of a building in the field opposite to Bryn y Coed in Maeshafn. The owner, Mr Scott, later assured the Council that planning permission had been granted for the building. The next meeting of the Community Council, which will be the last before the election, will be held on Thursday 19th April. John Almond. Vice Chairman

On Maundy Thursday, 5th April, there will be Group worship at 6.30 pm in Gwernaffield Church Hall and Church, until about 8.00 pm. On Good Friday there will be a Devotional Service at 10.30 am in Llanferres and services in the other four churches of the grouping at 2.00 pm. Llanferres Church will be decorated from 2 pm and donations towards the flowers, or help in any form, would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Gay Headley on 810224. On Easter Eve there will be a Group Service of Light at Cilcain at 8.00 pm. Llanferres Church will be open from 1st to 15th April between 9 am and 7 pm. Please do take this opportunity to have some extra quiet time for reflection and to appreciate our church. If you have visitors over Easter, bring them along as well.

With the generous help of Denbighshire Countryside Services and local adult volunteers the children made an excellent selection of bird and bat boxes, that have now been put up in the Park (thanks to Tim G for additional sitings!) Letter from Dr Christine Lovely that spring is here. I have not sent you any news recently so a bit of a catch up is needed. The parking at Cadole has taken a bit of a move forward with the purchase of land behind the Loggerheads Country park being arranged, so as to increase the amount of space for parking. I doubt whether this will stop all the on pavement parking, and it won't stop until we get no parking signs, a yellow line and some enforcement. I went on an advanced driving test this week, called ODD. This is for people over 60 who feel that they may be losing their driving skills. At present everyone from the age of 70 years has to do a 10 yearly self assessment, which is not really a good idea as we may not tell the whole truth!!!! This ODD should be compulsory especially over 75 when eyesight may get poorer and reflex reaction times get slower. At present if anyone wants to take it, it is free. I passed but I was reprimanded for going through all my gears every time I changed up or down and I coast to traffic lights; i.e. I am in neutral when braking. As I learnt to drive in a 3 gear Ford Popular in 1966, we did not have many gears to choose from and double declutch was an art form and essential. Still I passed I was considered safe. Give it a go, ye oldies, for your own peace of mind and your families. Also I am making more radio programmes called 'Irritated by the Council' which will be broadcast in June /July As I will have retired then I can say anything I like, suggestions welcome. The topics are dog fouling, potholes and verges, waste
management, which we do well in Denbighshire and rural bus services/ transport for the elderly. So in order to find out more I went on the bins on 15th March, it was the pink bin collection in Llandegla and Bryneglwys. Martin the driver, fast Eddy and Edward were in the cab and we had great bin banter and a good laugh. I was recording them for the programme. I was also wearing fluorescent uniform with the trousers reinforced at the bottom so glass and sharp stuff doesn't tear through and cut the legs. I spent a morning in Llangefni with the half, out of one and a half dog wardens they have for the whole of Anglesey, going around the country park in the centre of the town. This is an attractive broadwalk, people actually let their dogs foul on the walkway, others do pick it up but hang it up on the railing rather than carry the stuff home, dearie me how selfish people are. Support from Llanferres and Mold for a charity project in India Great efforts are being made in the Llanferres and Mold areas to raise funds to support a project, which for several years has been providing free treatment for children affected by a cleft lip or palate. The Charity is called The Northern Cleft Foundation (NCF), and each January it sends out a team of surgeons and anaesthetists from the U.K. to a town in central, rural India. This year over 100 children have been treated and the results of these operations are life-changing so that the children go on to play a full part in society.

The arrangements in India are made by the local Rotary club, and this year the Rotary Club of Mold is liaising with their Indian colleagues to apply to the international Rotary movement for a grant which could more than match whatever is raised locally. The aim is to raise sufficient money to provide extra equipment for the operating team. The Mold club has recently held its annual charity quiz (won this year by "The Vicings" from Mynydd Isa) which with strong support raised just under £600 for the charity. Our local Parish Church in Llanferres held a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Night, supported by the Rotary Club, which was well attended and raised over £800, half going to the Church and half to the Northern Cleft Foundation. Very encouragingly, the Alun School Mold has chosen the Northern Cleft Foundation as its 'Charity for the Year'. Pupils and staff at the school have devised a number of innovative fund raising activities and over £1000 has already been raised! One of the school's current projects is an Easter Raffle with excellent prizes for the winners!

Nature Notes No sooner had I sent in my Nature Notes for the March issue of News & Views than the weather turned mild and spring erupted. On the 24th February I saw my first bumblebee of the year. It was our largest species Bombus terrestris, always the first to emerge. Having hibernated in a tunnel dug in a sandy or mossy bank, since probably last August, this already mated queen is easily recognised by its large size, two yellow crossbands and a buff tail. A couple of days later I saw a lesser house fly, two species of hover fly and some other insects in flight and also B. lucorum. The latter is similar to B. terrestris but smaller, slightly brighter coloured and with a white tail. Since then both species have become widespread. A lady telephoned from Maeshafn to say she had seen a strange bird, on two occasions, which she could not identify. She described it as being finch sized with a white head, faintly pinky-brown breast, white back and mainly white wings with patches of colour. I could not identify it either. She made a tentative suggestion that it might be a snow bunting but I thought that to be very unlikely and the description did not match. She told me where she had seen the bird and I went to investigate not really expecting it to see it. I parked the car, walked the few yards to the described location and there it was, obligingly perched, in full view on top of a bush. I was able to quickly identify it as a partially albino male chaffinch and, just to confirm the identification, it obligingly burst
into song. It was a striking looking bird and I could see why the lady thought it might have been a snow bunting but they are birds of the arctic and high Scottish peaks (I have seen them in the Cairngorms). In severe winters they will sometimes come down to coastal regions (I have seen them on the Wirral coast) but seldom move inland. Being in Oxfordshire in early March, we visited Otmoor Nature Reserve where I identified over 30 species of birds including red kite and a peregrine falcon hunting over the marsh and was able to watch some 'mad March hares'. They were feeding on the grassland and every so often one would approach another and they would rear up on their hind legs and 'box' with their front paws. It was once thought that it would be two males sparring but we now know it is a female fighting off the advances of an amorous male. Passing a drainage ditch we heard the short whistlelike call of an otter, close to a 'slide' which descended into the water. On the 18th March, in a small wood near Ruthin, I heard one, or maybe two, chiffchaffs piping out their onomatopoeic refrain - the first of the summer migrants. There were fourteen species of wild flower in bloom, many being visited by bumblebees, so I think we can conclude that spring really is here.
