Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At our November meeting, once again we were made aware of the amount of work done by charitable organisations. Rob Taylor and Laura Wright work with “Local Solutions U.K.”, which is accredited by the De Paul Charity for the Homeless. They work with 16-21 year olds in Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conway areas. Once the vulnerable young people have been referred to them they are cared for, to develop self-confidence and the will to get their lives together. Care also covers “Night Stop” when local families are prepared to take in these young people, with little reward, to help their development. All this comes at a cost and is paid for from donations from the public. Our December 12th meeting we will again be entertained by the children of Llanferres School - what a joy that was last year! We hope you can join us at 2pm

Older Persons’ Welfare Committee Thank you to all who supported our Bingo Night on 27th October. We raised a staggering £700 on the night, making over £300 profit, as we purchased gift cards for prizes, which went down really well. We hope everyone who joined us on the theatre trip, with tea in the Druid beforehand, enjoyed it as much as everyone on the committee! Christmas lunch on 2nd December is now full. We have 70 people joining us, and Sam has generously said that she can accommodate us all, but can’t fit anyone else in!

Baby and Toddler Group 9.15am to 11.15am every Tuesday during term time. 50p including a drink and biscuits. We encourage parents and grandparents of babies and toddlers to come along. It is a good way for the children to have a play while getting to know those they may start school with and also to meet other local parents.

Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The last meeting of 2017 was our Annual General Meeting held on Monday 13th November. With a good attendance, the meeting heard reports from the Hon Secretary, Hon Treasurer, Hon Show Secretary and the Chairman that this year had been much more successful than 2016. The Annual Show had also been a great success due to the support of so many exhibitors, so many thanks to all who entered and to all who attended on the day. As a result the club will continue and our show next year will be held on Saturday September 1st so please enter and attend again and ensure that the club and show continue for many years to come. With a healthy balance, the subscription to join the club will remain at £5.00 per year but visitors are always welcome to individual meetings for £1.00 a meeting. Members agreed a donation of £40.00 to 'News & Views' in appreciation of the publicity afforded to our Club. With no new nominations the four officers for the club were returned unopposed - viz Chairman, John Almond; Hon Secretary, Mrs Joan Almond; Hon Treasurer, Tony McKinstry; Hon Show Secretary, Mrs Ivy Watts. Our club will support the Llanferres Carnival on Sunday May 6th 2018 by having a plant stall. Next year's syllabus is set, with six lectures in the months March to September and outings as members bring suggestions forward. After the business, members enjoyed a large and varied buffet provided by themselves and enjoyed much chattering. Our Annual Lunch is next on the Agenda being held at Plas Hafod on Sunday January 14th 2018. Old members and prospective members would be welcome. The cost is £18.95 - three course and coffee.

CHRISTMAS TREES Mmm, the smell of real pine, the pretty lights, touches of nature in the living room, your own oxygen generator. What can beat a real Christmas tree? The celebrating of Christmas with a real tree has been a tradition for over 400 years. At one time, all Christmas trees were cut straight out of the forest. As you can imagine, these wild trees looked nothing like today's professionally grown and sheared trees. Today, 98% of trees are grown on plantations. These are usually grown and supplied by members of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association. One of the questions often asked at Loggerheads Christmas Trees is ‘Do the trees come from a sustainable source’? The answer is YES, in fact for every tree planted another 3 trees can be put in its place! This year our wet summer has produced some of the best trees ever, very full and green trees. One of the comments made about real trees is the thousands of needles that make a mess. Well, the answer is simple, buy a tree that has maximum needle retention. This is bred into the species. Examples of such species are Nordman, Frazer and Lodgepole pine trees. Another advantage of these trees is that they have relatively soft needles so you don’t need a suit of armour to handle the tree and are great if you have children or animals. Some information states that you can spray the needles with lacquer or special

spray; this has no effect at all and is positively dangerous To ensure a long life of the tree, site it away from unnatural forms of heat, e.g. radiators. Try to keep the lower part of the tree moist. If you do not have a stand that incorporates a water containers simply get a bucket and fill it with moist sand. Decorate the bucket with wrapping paper and ensure that the sand is kept moist or wrap the base occasionally with a wet cloth On a safety note, always keep the tree away from naked flame and ensure it is stable in the stand, check all lights and cables are in good working order and flexes are not worn or cracked. Before recycling, put your tree in the garden and use it as a bird feeder, adding colour and excitement to the winter garden. Utilise orange slices, suet, and seed to attract the birds. They will come for the food and stay for the shelter in the branches. Both Denbighshire and Flintshire have recycling facilities at their local refuse tips and if you have a brown or green recycling bin you can leave your tree by this and it will be collected. Interesting fact: Every year since 1947 the people in Oslo have given a Christmas tree to the city of Westminster (the tree in Trafalgar Square). The gift is an expression of goodwill and gratitude for Britain's help to Norway in the 1939-1945 war Information supplied by Loggerheads Christmas Trees

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ When we moved to Maeshafn forty years ago, one of the first things I found while looking around the garden, was a Dunnock's nest, four feet away from a Blackbird's in the cotoneaster which covered the then tumbledown wall. Plus a Pheasant's nest in a flower bed. The house had been empty for some time and the wildlife had moved in. There was a Bee's nest in the loft and a few Bats in the roof. Not a bad start, for someone with an interest in nature. Birds will often nest near to other birds, this gives another pair of eyes to look out for predators. An unobtrusive little bird, the Dunnock or hedgesparrow is easily overlooked as it creeps about on the ground amongst dense vegetation. It is often seen feeding on the bits that fall from a bird table where finches and nuthatches toss the seed about. Not surprisingly, the Dutch call it heggemus, meaning hedge mouse. In the middle ages it was heysugge, meaning hedge flutterer. It soon became known as the hedge sparrow. Nowadays the name dunnock, descriptive of it's drab dun colour is used. It is not actually a member of the sparrow family, it belongs to a genus called accentors. For this reason the British Ornithological Union has recently proposed yet another name change, the hedge accentor. Although primarily an insect eating species, it will also eat seeds, when insects and grubs are not available. To help, choose a foreign finch seed, as the seeds are much smaller and preferred by the dunnock. They will pick up the tiny bits that fall from the peanut feeder. March and April will see nest building when the pair have chosen their site. Four sometimes five blue eggs are laid and will hatch in May or early June. This is a busy time for both parents. Some

male birds have two families to feed, alternatively one female will have two males as polygyny is common practice. This will help in feeding hungry young. Due to being the favourite host of the cuckoo especially in southern England, the name fool sparrow was used in Victorian times. I'm happy to say that we have two pairs of dunnocks nesting in the garden each year. Some of the migrant birds didn't show up this year. I had a male pied flycatcher calling and making a fuss over a nest box for two weeks, but without a hen arriving he moved off. The same with a redstart, I hope they got lucky somewhere else, as the breeding season is so short. Lee from the centre of the village had the same happen to him in his garden. I didn't have the usual woodcock this year. I missed his evening flights, called roding when they fly just before dark on warm evenings, making their strange, but unmistakable call. A throaty sounding whistle accompanied by short rapid wingbeats to attract a mate. This will be answered by a shrill whistle from the female. Although no breeding pairs have been seen, we usually have some winter migrants here when the weather gets colder further north. Pat from Gwernymynydd, a keen and patient nature watcher and photographer has put some more excellent photos through my letter box of some of the visitors to her garden, including moths and butterflies and a young hedgehog. More next time Eddie

A note from your County Councillor Since the last News & Views I have now met with a Senior Civil Servant from the Trunk Roads Agency and our AM Darren Millar. Darren very kindly arranged the meeting which I felt was very constructive. The Welsh Minister has now responded and although we did not get a reduction in the speed limit through Loggerheads he has agreed to the following. 1) To reinstate the school crossing lights outside the gates to Colomendy. 2) To install new flashing speed limit signs that include not only the limit but the speed at which a vehicle is travelling. 3) They will move the 40 mph speed limit signs west and closer to the turning for Tafarn Y Gelyn. This will help to ensure that traffic is reducing its speed well before it enters Loggerheads I hope that all these changes will help to reduce the speed through this section of the A494 and make it safer for visitors to the country park, school children, residents and patrons of the petrol station and the Loggerheads pub. The Minister has also agreed to cut back and reduce the height of the hedges at the Llanarmon Yn Ial junctions on the A494 to improve visibility and to further investigate our request to extend the double white lines from the Clwyd Gate down to the first turning for Llanarmon Yn Ial. Again a move in the right direction.

I mentioned in my last article that the boundary commission are looking at changing the boundaries of a small number of wards in the county, one of them being ours. Representatives from the three community councils in the ward namely Llanferres, Llanarmon and Llandegla met with myself to discuss this issue. When we met the representatives all felt that they saw no point in making any changes. To move Llanferres in with Llanbedr would only increase that wards electorate to nearly two thousand which defeated the primary objective. They all also felt that the existing three communities had more in common than they had with any wards in the Vale. The current ward communities are linked by hill farming, mining, quarrying and the River Alyn. Since that first meeting the three Community Councils have now all met and supported a joint approach to leave things as they are. The commission is also looking at ward names and our suggestion is that we should be renamed the Alyn Valley Ward. Did you know that you can purchase an annual parking permit for both of the Moel Famau car parks and the car park at the Loggerheads Country Park. These can be purchased from NRW and they cover all three sites. The cost is ÂŁ30 and this includes a sticker for your car and a swipe card for the forestry car park. If you walk in any of these areas on a regular basis this could mean a big saving in parking fees for you and your dogs!! The permits are obtainable from Veronica Williams on her NRW direct line 0300 065 5022. Permits run from 1st

Limekilns in Llanferres One of the common features in our landscape about a hundred years ago was the presence of limekilns. Local limestone was burnt in these structures to produce lime which had many uses within the Community. For example, it was used to whitewash buildings both inside and out. In the former case it helped to lighten the interior, as many houses had small window openings. A substantial amount of lime was spread on agricultural land in order to neutralize the acidity which resulted from the spreading of animal manure as a fertilizer. At the same time lime would help to break down heavy clay soils improving drainage and workability. It was also used in lime mortar and plaster in buildings. Finally in the form of lime water (not to be confused with lime juice which is acidic) it was used as a medicine. Limekilns varied in size from a simple single chamber construction to large industrial sized plants. A local example of the latter is the large Hoffman kiln at Minera quarry, near Wrexham. This oval shaped structure is about 80 metres long and contains 24 chambers that were fired sequentially so that there was a continuous production of lime. Its chimney (now demolished) was 69 metres high. The kilns in our Community had single chambers and were often built into banks to ease the carrying of material to the top of the kiln. The kiln consists of an open topped combustion chamber with one or more draw holes at the base. It would have been loaded from the top first with wood or coal as a fuel and then with the limestone charge. Ash and then quicklime were raked out through the draw holes at the kiln

base. A slow steady burn gave the best results and was achieved by controlling the draught through the draw holes. Two tons of limestone would produce one ton of quicklime. About 10 to 15 tons of quicklime was required to treat 2 to-5 acres (1 to 2 hectares) of land. This explains why so many kilns were in use. Early Ordnance Survey maps show that there were 17 kilns (plus one miss-identified as a mine shaft) in our Community. However, when I carried out the Llanferres Parish archaeological survey in 1980 I could only find the remains of seven. They varied in condition from a few fragments to a nearly complete structure. One of the most complete is sited in Pot Hole Valley, adjacent to the public footpath, in the small limestone quarry that provided the stone for the kiln. This kiln is about 4 metres in diameter and is just under 3 metres in height. It has two draw holes at the base. Small limekilns fell into disuse in the 20th century for several reasons. Finely ground limestone became available as a cheap alternative to lime. In addition the demand for lime mortar fell with the introduction of Portland cement which was produced in industrial quantities. Once they became disused the kilns were often dismantled and the limestone blocks used in their construction were reused elsewhere.
