We moved to Llanferres in August this year, and there were the usual concerns about how we would fit in and adjust to life in this lovely area. Quite frankly we needn’t have worried. Everyone we have met has been so friendly and welcoming and the good wishes, cards and gifts (particularly the wine!) have been heart-warming. Thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome, we feel lucky to live in this beautiful part of the world!
Dave and Trish Pen-y-Waen Forestry Road Stan Gould of Star Croft, Llanferres, Happy 90th Birthday with love from all the family. School Playing Field to the Church Cemetery serves no useful purpose as there is no right of way and this will be welded shut. c) The school's hard Play Area would be examined to see if it could be used for car parking whenever there is an evening function in the school. This would prevent the inconsiderate parking in Ty'n Llan. 4) He had asked if the hedges along the Playing Field, the Car Park and behind the Memorial Stone could be cut. The area round the Memorial Stone had been cleaned and tidied up and the Remembrance Ceremony had been held. 5) Rural bus routes were still under review. 6) He was trying to pursue the purchase of the Playing area in Maeshafn. Minutes of previous Meeting: The minutes of the Meeting held on Thursday 8th October 2015 were signed as a true record. Matters Arising: a) The owners of cabins in Big Covert have been told that they must apply for planning permission but that it would be refused. b) Last month it was reported that a dog had been heard barking all day in the village. This now seems to have stopped so it is hoped that the situation has been resolved. Access to Information: Declaration of interest forms have been provided to all Councillors. PRE-CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR Our Fair was a most sociable and happy evening. Each year we enjoy an even wider range of Charity and Craft stalls. This year the Donkey Sanctuary stall was a particular favourite. Many thanks to everyone who supported the event:- Charity organisers, craft stall holders, raffle/tombola organisers, kitchen/wine staff and of course all who attended or donated. The evening seems to improve year on year. Collectively the stalls took over ÂŁ1000 and ÂŁ385 was raised for Diabetes Research - an excellent result but more importantly the evening was a lovely social event. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT If you did not manage to join us this year, please think about the next- We think you would enjoy it !!!! Pat & Rob Armstrong

Remembrance Sunday Many residents attended our Church Service led by Mrs Val Salvoni. Other members of our Community joined us at the Memorial Stone where councillors Margaret Davies, Yvonne Foden- McCorry and Rob Armstrong joined Mrs Salvoni to continue the service. The muted tones of the Last Post, played at the church, could be heard and the two minutes silence was observed . Following the Reveille Councillor Davies recited the Remembrance. Mrs Marion Bellis, who has collected for the British Legion for almost 50 yrs., then laid the wreath. The Kohima Epitaph was read by Councillor Foden- McCorry. Together with millions of others, we shared the solemness of the occasion.

Tax Saving Opportunity? In the budget this year a small piece of legislation was sneaked through which might be of benefit to married couples (or civil partner) if one of you is a non tax payer. In effect, the non tax payer can transfer £1,060 (10%) of their allowance to the tax payer, thus reducing their tax bill by up to £212 for this, and subsequent tax years. There is a simple on-line form, and you only need your respective N.I. numbers and other identification (such as a P60). There are top limits on the tax payer's gross income, but hopefully this may be of use to some readers. The link is www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance Good luck!

SHARE is new local charity that was set up by a group of people & businesses in Chester and North Wales as a result of seeing the tiny body of 3 year old Alyun Kurdi lying on a beach in the Med. Our aims are simple - to support the homeless in North Wales & Cheshire and to assist refugees everywhere. Since the beginning of September, SHARE has established a centre in Flint to collect, sort and despatch aid to those most in need. Around 11,000 items of aid have already been sent out to the refugees on the Greek Island of Leros but we still need more items as we are planning to send ten more pallet loads of aid to Leros before Christmas If you have any of the following items that you no longer use or need, would you please consider donating them to SHARE?
CLOTHES Warm Fleeces – jumpers or zip-ups Waterproof jackets/coats Waterproof hats Waterproof trousers/overtrousers Jogging bottoms Warm Hats, Gloves and Scarves Walking boots/sturdy shoes – with warm socks tucked inside (new or good condition please)
EQUIPMENT Tents (2-man preferred but any size welcome) Sleeping bags (children sizes really urgent) Backpacks/Rucksacks Thermal rugs/liners Blankets
PLEASE: Sort clothes into different bags and label them clearly with the type of item and either 'Women/Men/Children followed by Small/Medium/Large' as this enables us to sort all donations much easier and faster SHARE has a new website which will give you much more info about our plans going forward www.shareaid.co.uk . We are also opening our first ShareShop in Chester in December. Any money generated by the ShareShop will be used to buy derelict houses in the area and to refurb them into homes for local people. I'm more than happy to come and collect your donations and take them to the Flint Centre for you, as I am a SHARE Volunteer. Please just call me, Joanne McKinstry on 01352 810506 to arrange a suitable pick-up time. THANK YOU! On behalf of SHARE

The Loggerheads Inn Sign The Loggerheads Inn is believed to have acquired its name as a result of the famous eighteenth century dispute between the Duke of Westminster's ancestors and the Lords of Mold over the position of the parish boundary. Richard Wilson, the father of Welsh landscape painting, lived at Colomendy Hall for the last two years of his life (1790-92). He painted several local scenes and also the Loggerheads Inn sign. One story maintains that he painted the sign over a landscape painting that he had failed to sell, and received a quart of ale as his reward. The inn sign carried the words "we three loggerheads be" and showed two faces, the third being the viewer. It was originally installed above the door to the inn. By 1833 it was noted that weathering had caused a significant deterioration in the condition of the painting. It appears that a crude attempt was made to restore the painting. A detailed account of its condition in 1878 is very revealing. "At present the sign is smeared over, and the heads of the two loggerheads on the signboard are almost gone. ‌ only an indistinct outline of one of the faces can be made out and a portion of the cranium of the other loggerhead‌
underneath can be traced with some difficulty, for all has been smeared over with dark paint, the words "we three loggerheads", There is no "be", or room for it, on the sign". However, the sign subsequently exhibited is in a far better condition than the above, so it was either an over-painting or a replacement. In the year 2000 the then landlord terminated his lease. He took the inn sign when he quit the premises with the understanding that it was the original painting by Wilson and was therefore very valuable. The owners of the inn objected and put the matter in the hands of their solicitors. During these proceedings the painting was examined by experts at the National Museum of Wales who confirmed that it was a copy: the materials used in the painting were not available in Richard Wilson's time. Eventually the sign was returned to the inn where it has been on display ever since. Which leads us to the question - who did paint the existing inn sign? We know that an accurate replica was painted in 1928, by a Mr Williams of Gwernaffield, but there is no suggestion that this took the place of the one then being displayed.

The story of Donkey Fred By Charlie Disbrey Old Fred he stands with downcast eye, He shakes his head and wonders why, This empty meadow for my home, And I stand sadly here all alone, He calls to mind a summer’s day, And folk who walked the Bridleway, Who stayed a while and had a chat, And gave old Fred a friendly pat. He wonders if it’s true, that when, A donkey went to Bethlehem, That Mary on his back did ride, With Joseph walking at her side, And now the stars are shining bright, And darkness falls once more ‘tis night, How all is quiet and donkey Fred, Walks slowly to his humble shed, And underneath the starlit beams, Old Fred the donkey sleeps and dreams With shepherds poor and wise men, He walks the road to Bethlehem, And one bright star looked down and led, Old donkey Fred to Jesu’s bed, He lowly kneels with a bray, Greets Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. And Mary said, we thank you Fred, For coming to our manger bed, Tell folk who walk the Bridleway. You came to see us on Christmas day. Kindly supplied by John the Caravan

Nature Notes One does not think of a 'Dawn Chorus' in November yet some birds can be quite noisy at this time. Just as light is breaking the Jackdaws awake and start chattering before splitting up into groups which fly off to their chosen feeding grounds. Rooks, already visiting last season's nesting trees, compete inharmoniously, almost drowning out the soft 'coo - cooing' of the Wood pigeon in the shrubbery, which in turn competes with the, now muted but piquant, song of the Robin. A nuthatch establishes its dominance of the bird feeder with 'whipping' calls and a Blackbird, disturbed from its morning ablutions in the garden pond, signifies its displeasure with a discordant alarm call. Not the most musical 'chorus' but I still find it pleasing.
There were not many berries left on the Yews but coral-pink berries adorned the spindle trees and leafless vines of Black bryony, festooned with red and yellow berries, hung forlornly from some bushes. Fern leaves of Hart's tongue, Male, Polypody and Maidenhair spleenwort glistened in the wet but these will shortly become brown as the spores now developing on the reverse of the leaves reach maturity. It was quiet in the wood until the silence was banished by the harsh screech of a Jay but it returned to only compete with the soft patter of the rain, the gentle soughing of the wind and the seeping contact calls of a group of Long-tailed tits. Signs of regeneration are already showing. I noted seedlings of Cleavers, Violet and Herb Bennet, the last signposted by a last, lingering yellow flower. There are new yellow buds on some Willows, Hazel buds are loosening and the male catkins already hang ready and I saw the first shoots of Snowdrops peeping through the soil. Then the rain increased in intensity, there were near gale force gusts of wind and I decided it was time to head for home, find the warmth of my study and write these Nature Notes.
As the light increases, flocks of Gulls wing past in untidy, tumbling groups heading for local fields in an almost aimless fashion and I am reminded of the farmer's lament -"Seagull, seagull sit on the sand, there's never good weather when you're on the land". One cannot help but compare their flight to the manner of the Pinkfoot geese on the Lancashire mosslands. Here one's eyes are drawn upwards by the yelping of these birds chevroning across the dawn sky or returning in the evening gloom. May I wish all readers a pleasant These most vocal of geese maintain Christmas and a peaceful 2016. strict discipline as they fly purposefully to or from their night-time roosts. The chevron formation allows the following geese to slipstream those in front and, every so often, a goose will move forward from the pack to take its turn at the front. Later in the day, I walked (in the rain) in a Yew tree wood on a Clwyd carboniferous, limestone pavement.
