Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club Our November meeting was so interesting as it brought past and present together. Rhiain Evans’ mother kept a journal of her life change when she left Australia to return to our area of Wales, where there were strong family ties. In Britain she became a Queen Alexandra nurse during World War Two, travelling mainly at sea. A Christmas Day menu aboard a warship was quiet something!! The journal was a valuable legacy for the family. Possibly we should keep a journal for posterity? On December 13th we shall celebrate Christmas early when children form Llanferres School will sing carols. Please join us at 2.00pm

CONGRATULATIONS to Tamsin & Dyfan Barr of Cae Derwen, Llanferres on the birth of their baby girl Alys Elizabeth on 22nd October, a sister for Owen.

Goodbye and Good Luck! To Julie and Graham who are leaving Cae Derwen in December and moving to their new home in Gwernaffield. You’ll be very much missed by friends and neighbours xxx

Christmas Baking Orders Dr Wendy Shillito invites you to place your orders for Christmas cakes, puddings and mince pies, in aid of St Berres Church, Llanferres. You can contact her on 01352 810394. Grave safety concerns Further to the previous notice about grave modifications it has come to our attention that the metal edging on the recently redecorated grave is now a serious health and safety hazard which will need to be made safe. Warming Winter Work With the mowing season finally drawing to a close you might think that work in the churchyard was finished for the year. On the contrary the quieter winter months offer an ideal opportunity to catch up on some of the 'must get round to' tasks that have been noted down through the summer. For instance, the notice board has been showing a distinct list to the right lately, so we plan to replace the supporting posts and return it to the vertical. Although it is rather late in the year, the beech hedge which runs behind the Druid needs a bit of tidying up to help keep its shape and height ready for next year. Keeping with the theme of trees and shrubs, there are also the stumps of two yew trees and a laburnum which have been taken down in

Church News years past and the plan here is to cut them down to ground level. In removing these trees and stumps blocks of wood for the fire could be produced so if there is anyone who would be willing to donate to the church in return for bags of "best St Berres blocks" please contact Noel Headley (810224), one of the church wardens or Hugo Watts (hpwatts@outlook.com). Decorating the church for Christmas Any help decorating the church for Christmas would be appreciated from 2pm on Wednesday 14th December. Christmas Services Please come and join us for our Christmas services. We have the Christingle service on 11th December and the Carol service on 15th December. The Christmas Eve crib service is one for all the family to enjoy. This service tells the story of the nativity through readings and carols and involves the children as they bring the items for the nativity to the stable ready for Christmas. See above for the timing of midnight mass on Christmas Eve and the service on Christmas Day. Adrian Copping’s Retirement The church was full for the service to mark Adrian's retirement and the end of Adrian and Diane's time with the Bro Famau churches. Copies of his sermon are available at the back of church or from the St Mary's Cilcain website. The service was followed by a buffet lunch at which Adrian and Diane were thanked for all the work and support they have provided for the 5 parishes and the wider area. Until a new vicar is appointed baptism and wedding enquiries can be directed to the Parish Office (741184), funeral enquiries to John Foxlee (810677) and general enquiries to the church wardens. Congratulations to Rebecca Clarke on completing her charity Skydive! Rebecca completed her tandem SkyDive on Saturday 12th November near Whitchurch for charity and, not only finally overcame her slight fear of flying, but has raised nearly £1,000 for Children in Need! Mum, Dad and Emma watched in horror as she climbed to 10,000 feet and hurtled out of the plane…and they have a great video to watch! “We are very proud of our “little girl” and if anybody would like to help get her to £1000 please go to the Just Giving Website and search for R. Clarke.”

Local News Advanced notice …..having run the Liverpool Half Marathon last March for Claire House Children’s Hospice on the Wirral Steve Clarke has been awarded a place in next year’s London Marathon for the same great cause on April 22nd. Steve says: “I must be slightly mad but seeing the difference the money makes to children and their families makes it so worthwhile. My training starts in December in earnest so when you see hime struggling around the area on cold wet mornings…spare a thought , beep your horn and it would be great if you could make a donation!”

Llanferres Village Hall Management Committee The AGM of the above committee was held on Thursday 3rd November 2016 - the following items were of note; The Hall made a modest surplus of £318 last financial year, so we are able to keep the casual and block booking hire rates at the same level for next year. Numerous repairs were carried out by Denbighshire County Council during the year on behalf of the Hall, including new outside floodlights, and modifications to the heaters. There were 3 resignations at the meeting, Rob Armstrong is stepping down as Chairman, but will remain a committee member. Josh Griffiths has resigned as vice-Chairman and Betty Cook as over 60s representative. Betty was later presented with a bunch of flowers and a thank you card for her service. The above positions will be advertised in this issue as well as the Hall Administrator (caretaker) position and Booking Clerk - both becoming vacant at the end of March next year. The Secretary expressed disappointment at the poor attendance at the AGM, and meetings over the last three years and expressed concern at the continuing downward trend in attendance.

FAMILY BINGO

Thank you so much to our wonderful community for supporting our Bingo night on Friday 11th November. It was lovely to see faces old and new ! Sincere thanks to local businesses and individuals who donated prizes. We raised an amazing £672.42 which will go a long way toward the cost of the Christmas Lunch at the Druid.

BIG THANKS to the Gardening Club Also huge thanks to the Gardening Club for donating the proceeds (£68.50) from the Gardening Show Auction to LOPWC. This will pay for quite a few bottles of wine for the Christmas Lunch! Our committee members are going to stun and amaze with lots of entries into the 2017 Gardening Show to show our support for this superb village event, which we must ensure survives and thrives.

SHARE UPDATE NOVEMBER 2016 Another huge thank you to the people of Llanferres who have been in touch with me since the last issue of News & Views to offer donations of warm winter clothing and footwear. Every donation, no matter how small, is hugely appreciated! J We only send aid to local volunteer groups who are already in the camps – they know the area and understand what specific help and donations are needed at a particular time – so anyone who donates to SHARE can therefore be assured that their donations are getting distributed to the right people at the right time. During the last month, we’ve been very busy packing up lots of boxes and bags containing much needed aid for two refugee centres in Greece. A total of four pallets of aid have been sent by SHARE to Nea Kevala in Northern Greece and to Myrsini, which is 3hrs west of Athens. In fact, two of our local SHARE HQ Volunteers are planning to volunteer at the Myrsini camp in January 2017. We have also contributed money and donations of clothing to help fund a 40ft container that was sent to Thessalonica on 19th November – a second container is also being sent out to Syria on 17th December. We are also currently supporting an urgent appeal for wellies, socks and warm stout shoes for the refugee camps in Greece and Lebanon. So, if you have any spare wellies that are sitting in the garage or garden shed and not being fully used, please consider donating them to SHARE HQ in Mold before Christmas. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a slightly unusual Christmas present this year, how about your business, your name, or the name of a loved one on our new SHARE van, which will be used to collect donations and to deliver more aid to those who need it most…….simply go to www.crowdfunder.co.uk/share-van to donate £49.00 and SHARE will then email your loved one on Christmas Eve to let them know!

THANK YOU on behalf of SHARE Joanne McKinstry 01352 810506

PRE-CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR The Fair was yet again a most sociable and happy occasion with an even wider range of Craft and Charity stalls. Many thanks to all who supported the event, Charity organisers, Craft stall holders, raffle/tombola organisers, kitchen staff and of course all who attended or donated. The Crafters repeatedly stated that Llanferres is their favourite venue, as everyone is so welcoming. Collectively we took over ÂŁ1200 with many charities benefitting. We raised a magnificent ÂŁ300 for Diabetes Research. Thank you all for your support and generosity and best wishes for a very happy Christmas.

Remembrance Sunday

Many residents attended our Church Service led by Mr John Foxley. It was a particularly poignant service, remembering the Battle of the Somme and all the casualties of various Wars and Conflicts. After the service at St. Berres Church, the congregation progressed to the Memorial Stone where we meet with other members of our community. Mr Foxley read the Remembrance. This was followed by the Last Post which heralded the beginning of the two minute silence. The Kohima Epitaph was read by Warden Rob Armstrong and this year, the wreath was laid by Warden Anne Woodward who has been involved with the British Legion for many years. Our Community, our Councillors and County Councillor, together with millions of others, shared the solemness of the occasion.

Wilson's Sand Hole In August 1948 the Flintshire Haulage Company obtained planning permission to quarry sand from a small woodland on the opposite side of the road to the Maeshafn Youth Hostel. The workings became known as Wilson's Sand Hole after the proprietor of the company. He also owned the limestone quarry at Burley Hill. The local council halted the extraction of sand in early 1969 as it was feared that further working would destabilize the adjacent road. Later that year the company applied for planning permission to infill the sandpit with bituminous refinery waste. The Maeshafn and District Rural Association had just been formed and decided to object to the proposal. Some of the Committee members had visited a site near Wrexham where this material had been dumped. They returned with the news that the site was an eyesore, it was smelly, the surface layer of material remained liquid and there was a derelict car body floating in it! This was hardly the country scene that visitors to a Youth Hostel might expect. To complicate matters the sandpit was half in Flintshire and half in Denbighshire so that two planning authorities (Holywell and Ruthin District Councils) were involved in making a decision. Fortunately, after careful lobbying, both authorities refused planning permission to the relief of local residents.

A few years later Burley Hill limestone quarry was sold to Bodfari Quarries Ltd. The new owners increased the rate of output from the quarry very considerably. The Flintshire highways authority decided to improve the Mold to Pant du road to cater for the increased lorry traffic. Some of the waste generated by these road works was dumped into the sandpit shoring up the face nearest the road. However, by now a pond had formed inside the sandpit and it had been colonized by a large number of Great Crested Newts (a protected species). It was feared that further dumping might fill the pond and kill the newts. So, one Saturday afternoon, a group of local residents, of all ages, carried out a successful rescue operation. Well over 100 newts were collected and safely transferred to other ponds in the neighbourhood. Subsequently there were several changes of ownership of the sandpit. It is now a private nature reserve and has reverted back to woodland. To complete the story - the County boundary was eventually redrawn so that the whole of the sandpit now lies in Flintshire.

A note from your County Councillor Christmas will soon be here and as I write this article I have noticed that my car is covered in frozen ice. I hope is not an early sign of a bad winter to come. As I mentioned in the previous issue of News and Views it is that time of year when all authorities are looking at their budgets for the next financial year 2017/18. After a slightly better than expected settlement from Welsh Government of 0.5% we are hoping to keep any council tax rise in Denbighshire to the minimum. We have been looking at where we can make savings without impacting services and the good news is that we do not think we will have to find anymore savings for this coming year. As I have previously reported Denbighshire have managed to buy themselves out of their one and only PFI agreement and this will give us a further million pounds in savings this year to help balance the books. The final figures for the budgets and council tax will be agreed at the December meeting of the full council.

It is important to note that the Fire Authority, the Police and all the Community Council precepts have yet to be confirmed. I visited the new overflow car park at the Loggerheads Country Park last week and the new facility is excellent. Trees and shrubs will be planted along the fence between the car park and the neighbouring field to screen the area and the gates will be locked every evening. I hope that this additional parking will help with visitor numbers and therefore also help local businesses. There have been a number of break ins in Llandegla and at the same time a white Ford Transit van was reported as acting suspiciously in the area. Similar sightings of a white Ford Transit van have been reported in Llanarmon Yn Ial driving around the village. I would ask that if you see any vehicle acting suspiciously in your area please take the registration number and report it to the police. It is better to be safe than sorry. I am still pressing for roads to be repaired across the ward especially the Denbighshire section of the Cilcain

A note from your County Councillor Road from Tafarn Y Gelyn and the lane to Bryn Alyn both of which have a very poor surface and numerous pot holes. I have another site meeting with the highways safety team at the Valley Lodge Junction on the B5430 next week after a number of recent near misses. The junction currently has a give way sign which I believe needs to be replaced with a stop sign and drivers approaching the junction from Ruthin need to be warned that they are coming to a junction. Ideally rumble strips would be the answer. Any change to the junction layout would cost in excess of £100,000 which our budgets constraints do not allow for at the moment.

I would like to add my thanks and best wishes to Adrian Copping who is retiring as the Vicar of Llanferres I know he will be missed in the village and by all the other parishes he supports. Finally as this is the last edition of News and Views for this year can I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year. Best wishes, Martyn

Carnival Planning Meeting!! The meeting took place, as advertised, at The Druid Inn on 28th October. Many thanks to all who attended and for all messages and emails of support from those who were unable to be there. The outcome was positive with the proposed date being May Day Bank Holiday w/e 2018!! There were many ideas on how to proceed — in particular with areas of concern i.e. insurance, health and safety and funding.

brass band and lots of activity stalls to be manned with profits banked by each individual Club/Group/Church/Charity or school. The concept is proving popular with much verbal support. But this is NOT enough!! I have enough enthusiasm and belief to make this happen —but, unfortunately, I do need some dedicated, committed, knowledgeable key people to actively help/advise to make this happen!! The next meeting will be

Many thanks to Cllr Martyn Holland for offering to contact local villages/events as to how they proceed. It is the intention that the "Carnival" will be of a traditional nature, with perhaps, a crowned "Queen" (Rosebud or "Has Been" or both?!), a Maypole, a parade, a

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ Monday 7th November my walk this morning was spent picking up the "Sunday Litter" This is not children on a walk, this litter is thrown from expensive cars, when will people learn respect? At the time of writing I again see the importance of planting nectar rich plants such as sedum and buddlea, as I counted twenty bumble bees and several hover flies on a single plant of sedum and many butterflies, Peacock, Red Admiral, and Comma amongst them on late buddlea, building up their strength before finding a safe place, usually in the roof of a shed to spend the winter.

usually seen rummaging about in the top couple of inches of leafy soil . I sat quietly wearing a camouflage coat enjoying mug of tea and watching the birds, when a Treecreeper caught my attention this delicate little bird looks like it should be seeking a warmer climate, but it is a resident and will do it's best to over winter. Always very active, working it's way up the trunk and branches of mature trees probing the crevices in the bark then flying down and working it's way up again in it's never ending search for spiders and other insects. They nest in a split in the bark or where there has been a fallen branch. I have only found a Treecreeper's nest once and that was squashed into the space between one of my nest boxes and the trunk of a mature ash tree . They will squeeze into a space behind thick ivy. During a very cold spell I have seen them visit my bird table when live meal worms are offered, but they are quite ungainly and look out of place when not shuffling up a tree trunk or mossy wall.

I asked my grandson to move a few logs. As these are well weathered pine logs, the bark fell away as they were moved and exposed a thick white grub this is the larvae of the stag beetle. I was surprised to see one in this area as they prefer not as much rainfall as we have, I used to find them regularly on the Wirral. They can reach a 100 to 110 mm and are conspicuous with a large round chestnut coloured head. These are harmless and feed on This is the time to refurbish our nest decaying wood, so please if you find boxes and put up new ones so they will one while gardening move it to a safe weather in during the winter. place where it can carry on doing what it does - eating dead wood - before turning into an adult stag beetle. The adult male is quite formidable looking with it's over-sized mandibles which More next time. resemble huge antlers, that give it it's name "stag beetle". These are used in courtship displays and to wrestle with other male beetles to gain dominance. Despite it's appearance they are harmless.
