MTB Marathon – Ruthin 2013. We, as a community, have helped out with the Mountain bike marathon for the last 8 years and have received donations for the upkeep and maintenance of the village playing field. Without your time and effort this event would not be able to take place.
is the bank holiday weekend, instead of the usual dates of 14th – 15th September.
The format for the MTB marathon 2013 has changed. This is due to a change in circumstances with the event organiser reducing the event to three locations instead of five.
In the past the LPFRA has received a donation of £2000 for volunteering out time, a sum I’m not sure we would get from any other fundraising event. Please email crc_marshal@hotmail.co.uk Or call 810461 with your views.
The first change is that the mountain bike marathon will take place on the Saturday instead of the Sunday. The second is the event may change to an earlier date of August 24th – 25th, which
Before I commit to the task of marshalling the event I need to know an indication without commitment if people are available or interested in helping out.
Thanks, Dan Hurst Chairman of the LPFRA

Looking back………… Christmas Fair The Church once again held a stall at the Christmas Fair organised in the Village Hall on Saturday 10th November. Dr Wendy has now built up a large following for her Christmas baking and as a result £216.19 was made on the stall for the Church, mainly, but not entirely, due to the sale of her cakes, puddings and chutneys. It would be good next year to have a larger range of items with a Christmas theme. If anyone would like to make or collect items during the year for this stall, please speak to Churchwardens. The money raised is always put to good use for the running of the Church.

Church News Remembrance Sunday A good all-age congregation gathered together on 11th November to remember those who have died or been injured in the service of our Country. The service was held at 10.15 so that at its conclusion we could walk to the newly refurbished Memorial Stone area to hear the Last Post, observe the 2 minute silence and speak the Kohima Epitaph at 11 am. It was a very moving occasion and very sad for some. Looking ahead…………. Christingle Service This will be on Sunday 9th December at the usual Family Service time of 11 am. As usual the children will be given Christingle oranges. These are very symbolic for all showing that Christ is the light of the world and provides us all with good things. Carol Service and other Christmas Services The Carol Service will be held on Thursday 20th December at 7pm and will be followed by sherry and mince pies. This is the first of several services over the Christmas period designed to cater for children and adults. Please look at the list above to find dates and times, which are not necessarily the same as last year. The Crib service is a very popular event. Church Decorating Please come along and help with this enjoyable task at 2 pm on Wednesday 19th. Rob usually brings a Christmas CD to enhance the atmosphere! Sunday 6th January There will be a special Group Celebration Eucharist at Holy Trinity, Gwernaffield on the Feast of the Epiphany, Sunday 6th January at 11 am, to mark the retirement of Rev'd Jean Stephens. This will be followed by refreshments in Gwernaffield Church Hall. Services in January will follow the usual pattern. Giving by Text Saint Berres' Church is rapidly moving into the 21st Century !! You can now donate to much needed church funds by text. To donate £5 simply text: FERR99 £5 to 70070. Other amounts can be donated; replace £5 with £1, £2 or £10. Your donation will be received by the Diocese of Saint Asaph through Just Text Giving and allocated to Saint Berres' church. There is also a Gift Aid option to increase your donation. Thank you, Noel Headley, hon. treasurer.

Yvonne Foden-McCorry, County Councillor Martyn Holland and members of the public. The Clerk, Mrs Dillon was unable to attend. Before the meeting the Chairman, on behalf of the whole Council, expressed sincere condolences to the Clerk, Mrs Gwyneth Dillon, on the death of her husband Graham who passed away suddenly on 12th October. 1. Apologies: Cllr. Jac Armstrong 2. Declarations of Interest - Members to declare any personal or prejudicial interests in any business identified to be considered at this meeting None recorded 3. Meeting Open to Public In reference to the proposed additional car parking at Loggerheads Country Park, Mr King suggested that the speed of local traffic, on the minor road serving the car park, could be problematic. Mr Barton wished to speak on his Asperger's Syndrome condition but the Chairman explained that it was not a matter for discussion at a Community Council meeting and, should the Councillors wish to debate the issue, professional advice would need to be obtained. 4. County Councillor's Report - Cllr. Holland apologised for being late which was due to a meeting he had attended with Assembly Members Alan Davies(Rural affairs Officer in the National Assembly) and Darren Miller, to discuss rural affairs. Councillor Holland had been advised by Welsh Water that the sewerage pipe from Llanferres to Loggerheads was to be restored but this should not
cause any disruption to the main road. The work was proposed to begin in January and be completed by April. The present work on the sewerage p Plant at Llanferres and the ancillary pipe work is on schedule. Councillor Holland has been delivering OWL leaflets and has almost covered the whole Community. He is to meet officers regarding the bus issues in Maeshafn to see if minor alterations can be made to improve the bus service. The new recycling bins and bags should be distributed shortly but this had been delayed due to problems with suppliers. He had asked for the resurfacing of Ty'n Llan to be treated as a priority but it would depend on budget availability. The County Council has been given a target to reduce spending by ÂŁ7 million in both 2012 and 2013. So far they have achieved targets without cutting services. The County Council is hoping to cut expenses by using more electronic means of communication. A review is taking place of schools in the Ruthin area including vacant places and the condition of school buildings. 5. Minutes of the October Meeting - The Minutes of the Meeting held on 11th October were received and signed as a correct record by the Chairman, subject to two minor corrections. 6. Matters Arising - Item 17 a) The Chairman had been telephoned by Mr Elwyn Owens of the 'Village Lunch Club' who asked if the Llanferres Community Council could supply funding "to organise activities that will promote the welfare of the residents of Gwernymynydd and the surrounding villages". The Chairman explained that the Council had not allowed for such an eventuality when setting the precept for 2012 but that it could be discussed at the next precept meeting.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Homemade Mincemeat Homemade mince pies beat those bought in the shops hands down every time and are even better again if you make your own mincemeat. It is incredibly easy and early December is not too late. It is worth making in a 2kg quantity as in this recipe as is makes a wonderful filling for baked apples that can be enjoyed long after Christmas. To make about 2kg ( 4 large jam jars) 1 large cooking apple - peeled and grated 600g dried fruit: currents, raisins and sultanas 300g vegetable suet 250g dark brown sugar (muscovado) 100g chopped peel zest and juice of 1 lemon & 1 orange 50g chopped almonds 1 tsp mixed spice ¼ grated nutmeg ½ tsp cinnamon 100ml brandy Soak dried fruit in orange and lemon juice for a minimum of 1 hour. Add all other ingredients, except the brandy and stir well. Place in a very low oven 120C gas ¼ for 2 - 3 hours in a bowl, dish or pan covered with a lid or foil. Remove from the oven and allow the mixture cools before adding the brandy and stirring well before jarring. Jars should be prepared as for jam making ie cleaned and sterilised in the oven: 120C, gas ½ or through the hottest cycle in a dishwasher. However the jars should be cooled before filling or else the suet will melt and separate.

Llanferres Over 60s Club At the November meeting we had two talks; one on "Houseproud and another about Energy Efficiency. Both are free schemes run by Denbighshire County Council especially for pensioners and handicapped people. Houseproud covers advice and help with building work They help choose council approved contractors, supervise the work and make sure no money is paid until they have approved the work. Any job can qualify from a garden gate to a complete new build. The other scheme is for help and advice on aspects of heating installations and insulation. We also discussed food arrangements for the December meeting when the group from Mold, who entertained us last year, will be coming again.

THE 2012 TRIQUIZARD TOURNAMENT Three new teams joined the second quiz on Saturday 17 November. But despite excellent performances from Dustbin Beaver Fan Club, The B Team and Pollywollydolly DoodlesToo, the Headstrongs excelled again and took first place just 1 point ahead of Demon Dogs. Funds raised on the night were shared between News & Views and Movember and there were plenty of spectacular 'taches on show (though Tim's still working on his!) Patrick was in the bad books with Daryl at the end of the night after a dodgy answer about a chap called Geoff lost the CGS a valuable point. Please join us for the third quiz, which is on Wednesday 12 December - it's a Christmas special with plenty to play for. Teams of up to five. £2.50 per person entry. Paul & Siobhan

I've just moved into Ruthin from East Yorkshire. I'm a singing and piano teacher and have recently started a singing group. I'm a strong believer in two things; 1 Singing together makes people happy 2 Tea and cake make people happy! We meet every Thursday for tea, cake, singing and to make new friends. Flying High at 90!!!
Vera Stobbs achieved a lifetime ambition at the age of just 90 by having a flying lesson at Hawarden Airport on 26th October 2012! It was a gift from friends in the village for her 90th Birthday last year, and she would like to thank everyone for giving her the fantastic opportunity, which,as you can probably tell, she thoroughly enjoyed!

Nature Notes Visiting the coast at Point of Air I inspected the new RSPB bird viewing hide and was delighted at the strength and ruggedness of this open backed hide. Let us hope that it does not suffer the fate of the previous hide which was wrecked and then burnt down by brainless vandals. The current hide is robust enough to withstand most vandalism but fire could still be a danger. The day began with thick fog which cut visibility down to about twenty metres but the sun could be seen above and I was hopeful that it would eventually burn through and evaporate the fog. Nevertheless, I knew the birds were there as I could hear the piping calls of Oystercatchers, the trilling of Redshank and the haunting, evocative call of Curlew. At the hide, the tide was nearly full, but drifting past was a bevy of Teal(our smallest duck) the males in full plumage displaying the cream undertail and chestnut head with its green stripe. Following on were the ever present Mallard and, at the edge of the fog line I could just make out four Red-breasted Mergansers line astern. Peering deeper into the mist a large flock of, seemingly white, Shelduck could be made out as it drifted ghost-like in and out of vision, whistling and occasionally uttering quiet 'quacks'. Over the marsh a Skylark briefly sang and there was the twittering of linnets and suddenly they swept overhead, about thirty or so linnets twittering continuously accompanied by a dozen chaffinches. They landed in a nearby bush, suddenly saw me and were off again. Just after full tide the sun won its battle, the fog disappeared, everywhere was bathed in light and visibility was excellent. A miscellany of duck could be seen - large numbers of Wigeon, more
Teal and Mallard and some very elegant Pintail, with the white line up their long necks (incidentally, reckoned to be the world's most numerous and widespread duck). On the rocky foreshore Rock pipits, a couple of Skylarks, the flock of Linnets and Chaffinches landed to feed on the seeds of the Sea aster and Sea purslane that thrive on the marsh. Out on the sandbank, Black-backed gulls rested and further along Oystercatchers crowded together to blacken the sand, fronted by a border of Redshank along the tide line, with smaller clumps of diminutive Dunlin and patches of grey Knot. At the other end, near to the gulls, black Cormorants had gathered, some standing with their wings outstretched to dry. In the vegetation on the marsh a vast number of Curlew had congregated interspersed with Bar-tailed and Blacktailed Godwits, there were Redshank along the water's edge and, with the aid of a telescope, one or two Grey plover could be picked out. A party of broad-winged Lapwings flapped languidly past, as though they were in a hurry to go nowhere in particular, occasionally uttering 'peewit' calls, and a couple of Little egrets lifted their long necks to watch them fly past. All seemed so peaceful until a large female Sparrowhawk sped over the sandbank and all the Redshank, Knot, Dunlin and Oystercatchers took to the air in panic. It was a marvellous spectacle as the huge flocks swerved and dived in synchronised flight, first displaying their pale undersides and then dark or black as they banked in unison to show their upperparts - all to confuse the Sparrowhawk which flew away, leaving the waders to settle down once more. As the tide rapidly receded, flocks of waders rose in the air to fly off to feeding

Nature Notes grounds now rising from the water further along the coast. Others, mostly Redshank, came in front of the hide probing the exposed mud for invertebrates, then we spotted one that looked different. It was a Spotted redshank. Larger and greyer than the common Redshank, with a longer beak and longer bright orange legs, it kept apart from the other Redshanks, seemingly, deliberately avoiding them. There was more to see but space restricts me from listing them all but it was a grand day in the glorious winter sunshine. May I wish all readers the 'Complements of the Season' and thank all who have contacted me with observations or questions, they are all most welcome, and I hope I have been able to help. John Almond

CREDIT CARD SCAM - BEWARE It pays to be especially wary at this time of year, and this scam has been highlighted to us. Basically it involves someone trying to deliver a “gift parcel” to you - that has got a reasonable value, but the deliverer asks for a nominal delivery charge to be paid by credit card, because the gift includes alcohol, and it is “proof of delivery.” Making this payment gives the person access to your card and PIN - so please be very wary of anyone asking for a payment in this way on your doorstep. If you do come across anything suspicious along these lines, please do contact the local police..

National Eisfeddfod of Wales Denbigh 2013 The “Working Party" had a successful stall at the Craft Fair making a total of £230. A substantial part coming from the “Towns of 'Wales" competition for the lovely hamper which was given by Margaret and Gareth Davies. The hamper was won by Mrs Laura 6 Griffiths from Ruthin who chose Caernarfon. Our next event is to be a "Sale of Promises" on March 15th 2013 so we will soon be asking for some Promises to auction.
There are not a great many Welsh speakers in Llanferres but I'm sure the future of the Language, Culture and Traditions are important to a great many of us and that is what the Eisteddfod represents. So we hope you can help us to support them. Olive Parry
