Church News - Lifestraws The LifeStraw is a personal water purification device turning any water into drinking water. It effectively removes all bacteria and parasites responsible for causing common diarrhoeal diseases. It costs less than the price of a cup of coffee. Distribution will be via the Life Box organisation who will send them when called for - to disasters & areas of great need around the world. At the Millennium, the United Nations made the following statement: “ The need for safe drinking water is denied to many people in this world. Every 15 seconds a child will die as a result of drinking unsafe water. We are committed by the year 2015 to provide this basic human right” More than one billion people – one sixth of the world’s population - are without access to safe water supply. At any given moment, about half of the world's poor are suffering from waterborne diseases, of which over 6,000 – mainly children – die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water. Mold Rotary Club have decided to adopt this charity for this year and half of the proceeds of the pancake party will go to this very deserving cause. Please come along, eat as many pancakes as you can, buy lots of cakes, and have a good evening in support of Llanferres Church and Lifestraws.

In Llanferres Church this will be on Thursdays at 9.00 am Christmas Thanks Very many thanks to 'the team' who helped to decorate the Church in time for the Carol Service and for Christmas. Thanks, also, to those who gave flowers or money for flowers, enabling the Church to look splendid to celebrate the birth of Christ. Money, as usual, was donated in lieu of Christmas Cards. Shrove Tuesday Drs Wendy and Nigel Shillito will be hosting their usual Pancake Evening at Dragon House on Shrove Tuesday, 12th February. The proceeds will be shared between Llanferres Church and a Rotary charity called LifeStraw. Please see Wendy's poster on a separate page for further details of her evening and ticket prices and also her article about LifeStraw. Ash Wednesday There will be a Holy Communion service with imposition of ashes on Wednesday 13th February at 7 pm in Llanferres Church. There is also a morning service at 10.30 am at Cilcain Church.

Cyngor y Cymuned -Llanferres From the minutes of the December meeting:- Present: Cllr. David Jones (Chair), Cllr. Olive Parry, Cllr. Margaret Davies, Cllr. John Almond, Cllr. Rob Arnstrong, Cllr. Rob Jones, Cllr. Yvonne Foden-Mc Corry, Cllr. David Twomey and the Clerk, Mrs Gwyneth Dillon. 1. Apologies: Cllr. Jac Armstrong and County Cllr. Martyn Holland. 2. Declarations of Interest: None declared. 3. Meeting open to the public for ten minutes: No matters raised. 4. County councillors report: County councillor Holland was not present, due to another commitment, but he had reported that he had received many queries/complaints about the new refuse bin system and he was looking into the matter. 5. Minutes of the November Meeting: In the absence of the Clerk at the November meeting, these minutes had been taken by Cllr. John Almond. The minutes were signed as a true record. 6. Matters Arising: None. 7. Maeshafn Bus Stop & Parking: David Jones(Chair of Llanferres CC), County Cllr. Martyn Holland and an official from the Highways Department had met in Maeshafn to consider what steps could be taken to alleviate the problem. They suggested that an extra white line could be painted at the lower entrance to the Village Green to emphasise that it was a road junction and that vehicles should, therefore, not park there. This would then enable the bus to use this space to turn round. This would be subject to Denbighshire CC approval. A notice could be placed at the bus stop advising passengers to stand in a place where they could be seen by

the bus driver when he was at the T-junction above the village. It was emphasised that the driver had an obligation to come to the bus stop in the village on every occasion. 8. Maintenance in the Community: It was reported that the telephone box in Tafarn-y-Gelyn had been very badly damaged by a vehicle which had collided with it after skidding on the icy road. The police had been informed and the insurance implications were being investigated. 9. Risk Assessment: It was reported that a light was not in use at the top of the school car park causing inconvenience to members of the public. This was believed to be the school's responsibility. Enquiries would be made. 10. Landscape project - Memorial Stone: Several of the new paving stones at the Memorial Stone have been broken, presumably by vehicles reversing over them when delivering to the school. It is disappointing that this improvement to the Memorial Stone should be damaged by what appears to be careless and incompetent driving. Any information would be welcome. Cllr. Rob Armstrong reported that he had purchased some bulbs and these would be planted when conditions allowed. 11. Setting the Precept: Councillors were provided with copies of the accounts for 2011/2012 to study, prior to setting the precept for the coming year which will be set at the January 2013 meeting. 12. Training/Finance: The next training meeting for 'One Voice Wales' will be in Denbigh on 8th January. 13. Bills: HMRC ÂŁ29-40. Administration Expenses ÂŁ227-93. Resolved to pay.

14. Planning Matters: 21/2012/1560 Proposal: Erection of a rural enterprise dwelling and installation of a package treatment plant. Location: Land at Fron Hen, Llanferres. The Community Council resolved to raise no objections. Certificates of Decision: 21/2012/1093 Proposal: Retention of 16 no. ground mounted solar photovoltaic panels (retrospective planning). Location: Cae Cymro, Gwernymynydd. GRANTED
'Local Government (Democracy) (Wales) Bill. 17. Other Matters that have been brought o Councillors' Attention: Ice is a hazard on Forestry Road near to Tafarn-y-Gelyn where water drains off the adjoining field. It was resolved to ask Denbighshire CC roads department to give this area special attention when gritting. A resident of Tafarn-y-Gelyn asked whether a seat could be sited along the old road/bridle path for the convenience of elderly people who walk this area. A resident of Rectory Lane in Llanferres had asked if signs could be erected at the bottom of Rectory Lane advising that the road was unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles. The Clerk will contact Denbighshire Highways department and request that I sign be provided.

Rob Jones, Cllr. David Twomey and the Clerk, Mrs Gwyneth Dillon and County Councillor Martyn Holland. 1. Apologies: Cllr. Jac Armstrong and Cllr. Yvonne Foden-Mc Corry. 2. Declarations of Interest: None declared. 3. Meeting open to the public for ten minutes: A planning application for a dwelling in Maeshafn was to be considered later in the meeting and it was pointed out to the Council that concrete piles had been necessary when a property had been constructed on a nearby site, due to the nature of the land and possible mine workings and it was probable that similar protective measures would be required for the proposed development. A complaint was received about parking on the pavement near to Loggerheads Country Park which would have prevented the passage of prams or pushchairs. County Councillor Martyn Holland reported that the matter was before the Welsh Assembly and that, once the order was signed, yellow lines would be painted on the road to stop this kind of parking. 4. County councillors report: The new refuse bins were still causing issues but Denbighshire CC were dealing with them as quickly as possible; the problem at Plymog would seem to have been resolved; the Village Hall refuse was being treated as Industrial Waste. A white line was to be painted at the Village Green in Maeshafn to discourage parking which caused

problems for the bus when turning; a notice was being displayed at the bus stop asking prospective passengers to stand where they could be seen by the bus driver when he was at the T junction above the village. Councillor Holland had asked for the pot-holes to be filled on Forestry Road(some had been done) and he reported that water could be as big a hazard as ice. It was doubtful if finance would be available to resurface the road. The County Council had inspected the problem of water on the road at Tafarn-y-Gelyn and it was suggested that officials talk to a local landowner who might have detailed knowledge of the adjacent drains. Cae Derwen would be adopted shortly(after 17 years) but Morris Homes would continue to be responsible for the maintenance of the strip of land at the entrance to Cae Derwen. Denbighshire CC had agreed to a sign at the bottom of Rectory Lane advising the road was not suitable for heavy vehicles. He reported that a tenant wanted to build a large barn on the site currently being used by Welsh Water as a temporary site office and to store equipment etc for the construction of the sewerage pipe, once the site had been cleared. Although not in Llanferres it would be visible from the main road. The land is under covenant to the National Trust. There had been a spate of ‘break-ins’ in Llanarmon(18 in past 3 weeks). Residents should be very wary of door to door salesmen. 5. Minutes of the December Meeting: The minutes for the December meeting were signed as a true record.

Matters Arising: The telephone box in Tafarn –y –Gelyn which had been wrecked by a car had been inspected by a contractor who declared it too expensive to repair but had erected safety screens round it. It will require a crane to remove it. The Council are making enquiries as to what action can be taken in view of the fact that the telephone box is a listed building. 7. Maintenance in the Community: Telephone box – see 6 above. 8. Risk Assessment: Nothing to report. 9. Landscape project – Memorial Stone: Flower bulbs had been purchased and planted in pots and would be transferred to the Memorial site when coming into bloom. 10. Setting the Precept: Councillors discussed the precept for 2013/14. 11. Training/Finance: The clerk will provide a précis of the meetings applicable to Llanferres Councillors. 12. Bills: HMRC £29-40. Water Authority £16-73. Resolved to pay. 13. Planning Matters: 21/2012/1539 Proposal: Erection of detached dwelling and formation of new vehicular access. Location: Land
between Tan y Graig and Bracken Hill, Maeshafn. The Community Council resolved to raise no objections but wished to draw the attention of Denbighshire Planning Authority to the ground conditions. 21/2012/1626 Proposal: Alterations and extension to farmhouse into adjoining building. Location: Cae Madog, Llanferres. The Community Council resolved to raise no objections. 14. Maeshafn Playing Field: No update to record. 15. Correspondence: None received. 16. Other Matters that have been brought to Councillors’ Attention: It had been reported that a dead sheep had been observed on the land adjacent to the Village Hall. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Sweet potato cottage pie This recipe comes from one of our recent workshops - 'Healthy Family Meals'. It is great winter comfort food, is healthy and the sweet potato gives a modern twist to this traditional meal. 500g lean beef mince 2 onions 2 carrots 2 sticks celery 2 cloves of garlic 100ml stock 500g sweet potatoes Heat 1 tbsp. of the oil in a large saucepan. Add the carrot, onion, garlic and celery and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add beef and stir until meat is browned. Add stock. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. While meat is cooking, peel and chop sweet potato into cubes. Add to a saucepan of cold water and bring to the boil and simmer for 15 - 20 minutes until soft. Drain potatoes, retaining a small amount of cooking fluid. Mash potatoes and add a little cooking liquid to get a creamy texture. Place meat mixture into bottom of flat ovenproof dish. Cover with the sweet potato mash and place under grill to lightly brown the top. Serve with green vegetables such as savoy cabbage, broccoli or spinach. This dish can be prepared in advance, refrigerated or frozen and cooked in the oven at 180 C for 25 minutes. Defrost fully if frozen.

Badminton Club news 2013 brings with it the second half of the badminton season and plentiful supplies of snow!! The end of 2012 saw one of two rival matches of the season, where Llanferres B Team played (none other than) Llanferres C Team. As expected from a team that has played for many seasons, the B team won overall. Afterwards there was amazing Thai food served courtesy of the Harvey Family. The New Year also promised a junior league tournament hosted by Llanferres.
Unfortunately this was cancelled due to the snow… however it will shortly be rearranged. Before Christmas, saw steady performances by both the A Team and the B Team in Division 2 and 5, respectively. The final junior season for Declan and Nick in the North Wales Shuttle Series has seen them win three silver medals in the doubles at Rhyl, Deganwy and Deeside. In the Junior club Cadhan O’Garra is developing the skills needed to start his coaching qualifications, Declan and Nick leave to join the senior club, with newcomer Dylan welcomed. After some confusion, the ‘C’ Teams match against Mold C was postponed until later on in the season, which gives the team a second chance to scrape a few more points after the exams. Declan and Nick have both played matches for the team since their promotion to the senior club. The team awaits their revenge match against the B Team!! The ‘B’ Team got off to a good start in the league but suffering due to ‘star’ players having exams. Hugo and Dan Williams are unbeaten this season in men’s doubles and playing really well. Mark Pimblett has stepped up to the B team on a few occasions and has acquitted himself well – improving steadily. Looking forward to the second half of the season where a more settled team should see us climb the league… Early December, after three failed attempts, saw the ‘A’ Team win their first match of the season against Deeside 6-2. Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club On Sunday 13th January, a total of 22 members and guests attended our usual 'Christmas Lunch' at Plas Hafod which was enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, a number of members were not able to attend due to health problems and we wish them speedy recoveries. On Monday 14th January we held a meeting to discuss arrangements for our Annual Show. Several alterations were made to the competitive classes and suggestions were put forward for future discussion. We do not usually have a meeting in January but this one was included to allow us to have a speaker in February, who will be Nikki Giles talking about 'Vegetable Growing including Rotation'. Visitors will be most welcome - Charge ÂŁ1. May I remind members that Annual Subscriptions of ÂŁ5 are now due (although many members already paid theirs' at the Annual Lunch). New members would be very welcome to help keep the club going and ensure the continuation of the Annual Show, which this year will be on Saturday 7th September. to Simon and Rachel Farr with their plough horse, Boxer. The Farrs have joined us to grow for the VegShare scheme at Cilcain. The beautiful and sturdy Boxer will lend a hoof to the project. He will be much kinder to the land than a tractor, not to mention all that lovely fertility delivered straight to the site! The basic plan is that 20 sharers will share the costs (under £10.50 per week) and contribute four hours per month on site to work alongside Simon and Rachel (and sometimes Boxer, of course). As their ‘dividend’ the sharers split the harvest equally between them. This will provide local, organically grown, fresh veg weekly for two people - great value and much more fun than the supermarket! Sharers will be members of FlintShare which has many benefits such as free pick your own fruit, social events with like-minded people, workshops and more. There are still a few shares available but you need to be quick as the scheme needs to start in Feb to get the ground ready. Nature Notes Except for the second week of December, it has been a fairly mild winter up to this week and signs of spring are all about us. Snowdrops, of course, are already blooming as are Hellebores and there are instances of Lesser celandine and Primroses in flower. Daffodils are showing well(depending on variety) and Bluebells are peeping through. In sheltered places buds are loosening on Sycamore, Elder and Willow, male catkins hang from Hazel branches and seedlings of several wild plants are making an appearance. Frosty weather will not harm any of them unless it is very severe. Slugs and snails have started emerging from their hibernacula in hollows, cavities in old walls etc but I suspect we all hope that the cold spell will kill off many of them. More bizarrely I have seen my first butterfly - a Small tortoiseshell! However, it was not outside but flying around in the Tesco store in Mold. I suppose it had hibernated in some corner, probably in a store room, been disturbed or perhaps the temperature had been increased, and it had taken flight. It would probably find somewhere else to hide and continue its sleep for another few weeks when, hopefully, the weather warms up. A lady from Rectory Lane telephoned me to say she had just seen about 35 Waxwings strip all the berries from a Sorbus cashmiriana tree in her garden. I was a little surprised that the tree still had berries, as they have long since either fallen off or been eaten by resident birds from the tree in our garden. The lady's tree is one that she had grown from seed many years ago and is a white berried species similar to Sorbus glabrescens. Most Sorbus are hybrids and hybrids do not usually come true to type from seed
but certain plants are 'apomictic', that is they breed true without pollination and the progeny are genetically identical to the parent plant. Sorbus trees are one such example. Birds often do not eat the berries of the white Sorbus until they have been softened by frost.
Waxwing
For those who are not familiar with Waxwings they are described as " about the size of Starlings and in flight they look very similar with their short, triangular wings. They are mostly pink-beige with a characteristic crest. They have a black mask and bib. The tail is tipped with yellow and there are yellow and white markings on the wings. The secondary wing feathers have red waxy 'fingers'. The vent is red and the legs and bill are black". 'Waxwing years' occur infrequently and it usually signifies a shortage of berries in Northern Scandinavia and Russia - their normal habitat. This could be a 'Waxwing year' as there are reports of the birds being widespread, with many reports from Cheshire. In the February 2005 issue of News and Views, I wrote of many Waxwings feeding on the berries from the trees round the Craft Centre in Ruthin and as many as nine hundred and thirty five birds were counted on one occasion and I think that will take some beating.
