Llanferres in the Great War After almost 3½ years of attrition and little movement in battle lines the Great War regained significant momentum in early 1918 with the German Spring offensive. In November 1917 Russia had signed an Armistice with Germany following the Bolshevik Revolution; having suffered huge losses during the war with probably as many as 2 million soldiers killed and twice that number in captivity. Russian prisoners following The battle if the Masurian Lakes in 1915 (note the child soldier). The Russian army was under equipped and poorly trained - often advancing without weapons; the order being to pick up the weapon of a fallen comrade; of which there were many. The Armistice was a humiliation for Russia which was stripped of all its provinces west of Ukraine and released 50 Divisions of battle hardened German troops from the Western Front, although nearly one million men remained. Erich von Luddendorff, commanding the German armies, was keen to strike a crippling blow against the British and the French before the Americans joined the war in significant numbers. The British knew the blow would fall in Spring 1918, when the weather improved, but they did not know where. The "Kaiserschlacht" or Kaisers Battle began at 4.40am on March 21st with a precise bombardment of British batteries, unit & Divisional headquarters, ammunition dumps, railway stations and strongpoints - a barrage of over 1.1 million shells in 5 hours, including large quantities of gas. The following attack, with 106 Divisions, aided by early morning mists, was a complete success with British frontline positions overwhelmed. The
Germans employed new tactics of "Stormtroopers" - small teams of crack troops who advanced quickly, by-passing any remaining strongpoints, to be mopped up by following troops. The first phase fell on the tired British 5th Army and the better prepared 3rd in the Amiens / Arras area attempting to drive a wedge between the British and the French. Allied losses were over 250,000 men; 1,300 artillery pieces and 200 tanks. As the attack began to falter with the arrival of fresh Australian troops and the difficulty of advancing over the old Somme battleground; a second phase was launched further north around Armentieres; followed by a 3rd (against the French around Soissons & Rheims) and a 4th (around Compiegne) and finally a 5th again near Rheims, ironically code named the Friedensturm - the "peace offensive" Ultimately the offensive ground to a halt by mid July as tired troops outran their supply lines and the Allied resistance stiffened; leading to the 100 day counter

PANCAKE PARTY – 4TH MARCH 2014 I realize that we have only just put away the Christmas decorations, but it won’t be too long before we are starting to think about preparing for Easter, which will start with Shrove Tuesday on 4th March.
Last year we raised money for “Lifestraws”, which is a fabulous charity which helps people who don’t have access to clean and safe water. We will raise money again for them this year, but in addition we hope to be raising money for “Tong-Len”. “Tong-Len” is an organization set up by Jaymang, a refugee Tibetan monk in Northern India (Dharamsala, the home of the Dalai Lama). It cares for Indian families who have had to flee from their homes where they have traditionally farmed, because of
drought and famine. The name “TongLen”comes the Tibetan words meaning “give” and “take”, the idea being that through compassion one takes on the suffering and pain of others whilst simultaneously giving out love and kindness. The organization concentrates on organizing education for the children in the refugee communities. It has no religious or political affiliations. The Rotary Organisation have become involved in supporting their work and
Some of the girls at the Tong-Len hostel “Tong-Len” have asked if we can raise money for play equipment for the children. Anyone who has been involved in the care of young children will know how vital play is to their social, psychological and educational development. It would be a fabulous gesture from one farming community to another to help their young people move forwards out of their impoverished situation. So please come along, eat lots of pancakes, enjoy each other’s company and raise lots of money for this cause!

Local News Parents & Toddlers (& Babies) We seem to have a regular attendance of 8 or so Mums or Dads with their little ones in this group. It's a good opportunity to meet others over a cuppa whilst the toddlers play. This Spring Term there are some new faces although a few older ones have now moved up into the school. Last term we had a little party in mid December, and on the last Thursday the toddlers were taken to see Father Christmas. The group meets every Thursday morning in the Village Hall from 9.15 to 11.15. The cost is £1.50 to cover the hire of the hall, refreshments and other expenses. Christmas Thank you to all who helped to make the Church look so beautiful for the wellattended services before and during the Christmas period. As I thought might be the case, Gay was recovered sufficiently from her operation to direct our efforts so that the church looked as good as ever. The money collected in lieu of Christmas cards will be given to the Mold Hospital League of Friends.

A note from your County Councillor As we start the new year can I firstly wish everyone a Happy New Year and I hope that you all had a great Christmas. Although things appear to be improving in the economy there are still many challenges ahead for all branches of government and as I have already reported, we in Denbighshire are still looking at eight million pounds worth of savings this year. I hope that by the next news letter I will be able to give you more details of how Denbighshire plans to achieve these savings.
need. Many of these buildings have been financed through long term PFI deals which may continue to be a cost to the tax payers long after any reorganisation has been completed. Did you know that two thirds of Denbighshire's current debts were inherited from the old Rhuddlan Borough Council and Clwyd County Council and that we are still paying for those.
The review will also look at Welsh Policing and I hope that this will not include the return to the argument for one Welsh Police authority. I believe this would be dangerous by putting the Police under more political control and once again further away from the The chief executive has already stated people. that for the following year Welsh Government will be expecting On a more local note there have been a Denbighshire to find a further five number of break ins in the Maeshafn million in savings. A note from your County Councillor been concerns about access through Tyn Lan due to cars being parked on both sides of the street. I would prefer not to ask for any form of parking restrictions but I do ask everyone to try and minimise problems by using their drives if they have them and by just parking sensibly. It is important that emergency services and deliveries can get through at any time of the day and night. Road works budgets are already being agreed for the financial year 2014/15 and I am pleased to announce that the stretch of Forestry road known as Pen Y Waen will be resurfaced in this coming financial year. The pot holes are very bad along this road and the work is long over due. I have also asked for speed measurements to be undertaken along the forestry road to Moel Famau after concerns have been expressed about the speed of traffic along what is a very narrow and busy road. There is a worry that this road is becoming a bit of a rat run in the mornings and evenings when it is used as a short cut from Mold to Ruthin and the measurements will be undertaken in two places along
the route. The solution may be a 30mph limit and the County Councillor for the neighbouring ward of Llanbedr Huw Williams fully supports this suggestion. Finally can I congratulate the Llanferres Old Peoples Welfare committee for all the work they do in the village and for the superb Christmas lunch they organised at the Druids in December. The entertainment and the food were excellent and the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended. Best wishes, Martyn

Villagers Left Traumatised By Carol Singing Llanferres Female Voice Choir staged their first ever carol singing evening around the village on Saturday 30 November.
Police have received a tip off that the gang are planning another assault on the village of Llanferres in early December 2014 and have advised residents not to approach the group without money and One resident on Tyn LLan who didn’t cheque books. wish to be named said “the sound of their voices outside my door brought tears to Llanferres Female Voice Choir raised just my eyes”. over £240, which was urgently needed for the Over 60’s Christmas Lunch on 7 A male resident on Rectory Lane recalls December. Thank you to all who heard shouting out to his wife “quick Gill get us for your amazing generosity !! your purse before they start” but unfortunately the singing started before the words were out of his mouth. “It took £10 and all 5 verses of Once in Royal David’s City sung to the tune of Hark the Herald Angels before they finally left. We were shattered by what happened right For Rent outside our own front door”. A family with 3 young children on Cae Gwyn had to endure Little Donkey, Jingle Bells (3 times) and We Wish You a Merry Christmas before the group moved on to terrorise others in the neighbourhood. In an attempt to protect their neighbours, Mr & Mrs Carney bravely came out onto their drive and provided mulled wine and mince pies. For the next 10 minutes there was a brief reprieve, but it didn’t last long before residents on Ruthin Road endured half an hour of hell. Llanferres Female Voice Choir were finally silenced by several bottles of wine at the Druid, before the offenders slipped away quietly into the night.

TELEPHONE KIOSK AT TAFARN Y GELYN Last winter a car crashed into and wrecked the telephone kiosk at Tafarn y Gelyn. The Community Council has had it replaced as per public demand. This is an iconic structure, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who was also the architect for Liverpool Cathedral, and the Community Council would like to see it serve a useful purpose. Members of the public, and especially residents of Tafarn y Gelyn, are therefore invited to submit ideas and suggestions. Some suggestions are :- use as an information site (this is not considered suitable as there is an adjacent notice board and display boards in the bus shelter); a depository for information leaflets; a ‘put and take’ library; use to house a defibrillator. If you have any suggestions please contact any Community Councillor. Their telephone numbers can be found in News & Views. (Page 37).

Nature Notes Nature always has the capacity to surprise. On 1st December 2013 we were in the little coastal village of Pittenweem in south-east Scotland. It was a cool day but sunny and, walking along the edge of the bay, a Hebe still in flower attracted our attention and there was a Red admiral butterfly and a Buff-tailed (Bombus terrestris) bumblebee feeding on the nectar of the flowers. I was not too surprised to see the butterfly because these hibernating insects can sometimes be flushed from their hibernacula by human activity or even tempted out by warm weather, but the bumblebee did seem unusual. This species customarily goes into hibernation round September or even August, perhaps 15 to 20cms deep in the ground, and stays there until the following late February or March. It is difficult to imagine what caused it to emerge. Two days later the east coasts of Scotland and England were battered by gale force winds and a huge tidal surge. I have seen reports in the newspapers of Swallows, Whitethroats, Willow warblers and others being recorded in parts of the country, including a Swallow at Conway. The correspondent was suggesting that they had returned to Britain early because of the mild December weather. This is nonsense. Birds in southern Africa have no idea what the weather is like in Britain and, anyway, the factor which stimulates birds to migrate is day length. These birds will be ones which were not fit enough to undertake the arduous journey south and have remained to
build up strength. If they can find sufficient food they might manage to survive the winter and if so will have a nesting advantage over the arriving migrants. I have seen Swallows on several occasions in past Decembers so they are not that unusual. The wet weather we are experiencing at present may not suit us but mosses and lichens are thriving for they need dampness to procreate. Close inspection of colonies of either will reveal their diminutive fruiting bodies. On the mosses they look almost like tiny flowers but are capsules which contain spores, either male or female. When the capsule splits, the spores are ejected. The male spores, attracted by a chemical secreted by the female spores, migrate through the water film on the parent plant's surface. Fertilisation takes place and spores fall to the ground to germinate. Lichens are a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. On the surface of the lichen can be seen tiny cup shaped structures and these contain spores of the fungus, which are ejected when ripe. It is believed that if these spores are to germinate they have to come in contact with the alga but the process is not yet fully understood. Most lichens are produced vegetatively by small pieces breaking off (containing both fungus and alga) and rooting into the substrate on which they fall. A downside of the mild, wet weather is that slugs and snails are already emerging from hibernation, so that does not bode well for gardeners.
