SHARE is new local charity that was set up by a group of people & businesses in Chester and North Wales as a result of seeing the tiny body of 3 year old Alyun Kurdi lying on a beach in the Med. Our aims are simple - to support the homeless in North Wales & Cheshire and to assist refugees everywhere. Since the beginning of September, SHARE has established a centre in Flint to collect, sort and despatch aid to those most in need. Around 11,000 items of aid have already been sent out to the refugees on the Greek Island of Leros but we still need more items as we are planning to send ten more pallet loads of aid to Leros before Christmas If you have any of the following items that you no longer use or need, would you please consider donating them to SHARE?

CLOTHES Warm Fleeces – jumpers or zip-ups Waterproof jackets/coats Waterproof hats Waterproof trousers/overtrousers Jogging bottoms Warm Hats, Gloves and Scarves Walking boots/sturdy shoes – with warm socks tucked inside (new or good condition please)

EQUIPMENT Tents (2-man preferred but any size welcome) Sleeping bags (children sizes really urgent) Backpacks/Rucksacks Thermal rugs/liners Blankets

PLEASE: Sort clothes into different bags and label them clearly with the type of item and either 'Women/Men/Children followed by Small/Medium/Large' as this enables us to sort all donations much easier and faster SHARE has a new website which will give you much more info about our plans going forward www.shareaid.co.uk . We are also opening our first ShareShop in Chester in December. Any money generated by the ShareShop will be used to buy derelict houses in the area and to refurb them into homes for local people. I'm more than happy to come and collect your donations and take them to the Flint Centre for you, as I am a SHARE Volunteer. Please just call me, Joanne McKinstry on 01352 810506 to arrange a suitable pick-up time. THANK YOU! On behalf of SHARE

The tenants after 1913 Tony King were all short term: there were three in 1916! The little information we have about the running of the Red Lion stems from offences committed. Thus in 1873 "seven respectable farmers" were fined for drinking in prohibited hours. Their defence that they "were only taking shelter on a very wet evening" was not accepted! The publican, John Jones, was also fined. The last tenant George Walter Frost (1916-17) repeatedly fell foul of the law and was fined for a series of

A letter to the Bank Shown below is an actual letter that was sent to a bank by an 86 year old woman. The Bank Manager, thought it amusing enough to have it published in the Times. Dear Sir, I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three nano seconds must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account ?30 by tray of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank. My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that, whereas I personally answer your telephone calls and letters - when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become. From now on l, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh and blood person. My mortgage and loan repayments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank, by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact which I require your

chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative. Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Notary Public figure and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities must be accompanied by documented proof. In due course, at MY convenience, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone banking service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Let me level the playing field even further When you call me, press buttons as follows: IMMEDIATELY AFTER DIALLING, PRESS THE STAR (*} BUTTON FOR ENGLISH. #1 To make an appointment to see me. #2 To query a missing payment. #3 To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there. #4 To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping. #5 To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature. #6 To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home. #7 To leave a message on my computer, a password to access my computer is required. Password will be communicated to you at a later date to that authorised Contact mentioned earlier. #8 To return to the main menu and to listen to Options 1 to 9. #9 To make a general complaint or enquiry. The contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call. Regrettably, but again following your example,l must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement. May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous New Year? Your Humble Client, and remember: Don't make old people mad, we don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to get us cross.

A note from your County Councillor As this is the first News and Views of 2016 can I take this opportunity to thank Paul and Siobhan for all their hard work and commitment in putting the magazine together. I know that many people look forward to receiving their copies for all the local news and event details. I should also like to thank the unsung heroes who deliver them in all weathers. The new year will start with a number of roads works in the area. The road from Llanferres to Maeshafn will be closed between the Ford and the village centre from 4th to the 9th January while BT complete what I hope is work in connection with

Superfast Broad Band. Residents living on this stretch of road will have access to their properties during the work. There will be traffic lights on the A494 between Loggerheads and Llanferres from the 5th to the 21st January while DCC clean the gullies. The Loggerheads to Cilcain road will be closed for a number of weeks from the 1st February to the 27th March as the county complete road widening works to the new overflow car park for the Loggerheads Country Park. The car park will be landscaped to ensure it blends in with the surrounding area as it is situated in a SSSI. This car park is long overdue and will make up for the lost parking along the A494.

A note from your County Councillor I have managed to get the County to provide us with a New Litter Bin for the village and Gareth Jaggard from the Llanferres Playingfield and Recreation Committee has kindly agreed to site it between the gates to the play area and the new green open space in Cae Gwyn. The bin will be emptied by the county every other week on the black bin collection day. I believe that the County have now also now agreed to site an extra Yellow Salt/Grit Bin at the top of Cae Derwen during the winter months. My thanks to John Almond for his support in getting the bin after he mentioned it at the annual Community Council meeting with the County’s Chief Exec Mohammed Mehmet. Nothing like going to the top if you want something done!! As you may have read in the local press the County received a smaller cut in Welsh Government funding this year than expected and extra money has been provided for education. Central Government were more generous to Wales in the Chancellors October statement but it may also have something to do with the Welsh Assembly elections next May. It does mean that we do not have to find a further two million in savings for the coming year and hopefully a smaller rise in Council tax could be on the table. Watch this space!! The controversial issue of fracking is once again back on the agenda and with shale deposits in the Clwydian range there is always a concern that we may be considered as a possible

area for investigation. I personally have yet to be convinced that fracking is safe or justified. In comparison to other countries such as the US who have vast under populated open spaces we are a small country that is over populated and fracking could have more of an impact on our environment and our surroundings. Fortunately fracking is expensive and the OPEC cartel seem to be determined to stop it before it starts by dropping world oil prices. It has been another busy year in council and I have endeavoured to attend all the Full County Council meetings, the two Scrutiny Committees I now sit on, the budget meetings and all the briefing meetings. In one month I counted thirty four meetings in total between the County, Community Councils and Community events. Finally, in these troubled times I would like to wish you all a very Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year and I look forward to working with you all in 2016 for the good of our communities.

Best wishes, Martyn The “Angels from the realms of glory” (Llanferres ladies voice choir) would like to thank everyone who donated after listening to the ‘beautifully sung‘ carols. Over £280 was raised towards the older persons’ Christmas lunch (so everyone got a pudding!)

Nature Notes Visiting Point of Ayr on one of the few days that had any sunshine during the first weeks of January, I waited for the tide to reach its zenith. A female Merlin (a falcon not a wizard) alighted on a fence post not 20 metres away from me and stayed for 5 minutes or more before flying off to hunt the passerines feeding on the seeds of the halophytic (salt tolerant) Sea Purslane (Halimione portulacoides) that blankets much of the marsh. A Peregrine falcon could just be made out perching on one of the towers of the nearby gas terminal.

sun came through and a rainbow arched across the marsh and shortly after the rain stopped.

Nearer home, I have noticed the Rooks, so noisy these mornings, at their nesting sites desultorily attending the last year's nests and stealing twigs from the neighbouring nests, a process called intraspecific kleptoparasitism. Ravens are in courtship display, for they will nest in February or March and I have seen Woodpigeons performing their wing-clapping display but they will nest in any month in which they think there As the waters stilled at high tide, and is sufficient food. the breeze dropped, the bay was dappled with generously spaced, piebald In early December I was fascinated and Shelduck, intermingled with groups of intrigued to find several Earthstars closer bundled, Teal, Widgeon, Pintail growing in the leaf litter at the base of (the world's most numerous duck) and our garden hedge. We, as a community, have helped out with the Mountain bike marathon over the last 10 years and have received donations for the upkeep and maintenance of our village playing field. I cannot thank you enough for this. Recently new swings and frames have been fitted in the park. Without your time and effort this event would not be able to take place. The organisers for the MTB marathon have been in talks with me over the last few months and had planned to ‘rest’ the Ruthin event this year. However, due to the positive response and feedback from many of the riders about the Ruthin event, they have decided to keep it in the calendar for 2016. This is brilliant news for our community and for the park. In the past the LPFRA have received a donation of £2000 for volunteering our time, a sum I’m not sure we get from any other fundraising event. The SCOTT UK mountain bike marathon - Ruthin will take place on the 10th – 11th September 2016. Please email crc_marshal@hotmail.co.uk Or call 810461. Thanks, Dan Hurst Chairman of the LPFRA
