There’s lots in prospect for the year ahead for the community, and we’d like to thank everyone who has sent in contributions for this month’s pretty packed issue.

Thank you to Claire Guitton for the front page picture this month, taken during the recent cold spell. Let’s hope February brings a taste of spring.

See page 5 to see who has been hobnobbing with royalty recently, and page 4 to see who welcomed a new arrival just in time for Christmas!

We’d like to make an early plea for contributions to the March issue to be sent in as soon as possible please, as one of us is away on a ‘mission’ at the end of the month!

February’s fundraiser for the 2018 carnival is a Valentine’s themed dance in the village hall on the 10th- see page 15 for details. And there’s a heads up for the forthcoming, ever-popular

Best Wishes Paul & Siobhan Email: news@llanferres.org www.llanferres.org

June Goes to Buckingham Palace Congratulations to June Lovell who has been recognised for her contribution to mental health services at an exclusive World Mental Health Day reception with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace in October. The event celebrated those working in the mental health sector across the UK. The royal trio have campaigned tirelessly to end the stigma surrounding mental health, and recently spearheaded the high profile Heads Together campaign to raise awareness of mental health issues. June has been recognised for her achievements in significantly expanding the scale and scope of counselling services in North Wales, enabling an ever increasing number

of people to access the vital support they need. She has also been recognised for her pioneering work to help people reduce their dependence on prescribed drugs. June said she felt “privileged and humbled” to have been chosen and added “The services I am responsible for compliment the vision that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been striving to support. “They are currently involved in addiction services and the Heads Together project which is about `shining a light on the power of conversation. In a recent documentary they recognised that supporting mental health underpinned the work of all of their charities."

The carol service was also very well attended and enjoyed. As usual the Christmas Eve crib service marked the coming of Christmas for the local children. The church looked festive and our thanks go to Gay Headley and her team for arranging this. Local News Thank you to everyone who came to the Ysgol Bro Famau Christmas Fair and helped us raise over £500 towards the new ipads that are needed for the pupils. We were pleased that Father Christmas and the elves were able to make the new date even if his reindeer were busy after the original date was snowed off! We have also just heard that unfortunately we did not win £5000 from the Aviva Community Fund but they have given us £500 for reaching the finals to go towards developing the outdoor learning areas at the two schools. If anyone has any shelving units, wheelbarrows or garden tools they are getting rid of, please let us know (Charlotte Jaggard 810357) as this could help towards kitting out the new greenhouse we will be buying with the money. Thanks for all your support and votes that helped us reach the finals. Ysgol Bro Famau PTFA

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ With the weather being cold, I've spent some time watching my bird table. I've been entertained by a flock of long tailed tits. The correct term is mob, usually up to about ten birds flying together and calling to keep in contact, if one gets separated from the group it will continue calling until it is reunited. "Mob" hardly seems suitable for such a delicate bird. They are not strong flyers, so their flight is helped by the dip and rise of their long tail. They will only travel a short distance before landing again to feed in the tree tops then returning to the fat balls or peanut feeder. Being such a small bird, weighing less than ten grams ,long tailed tits are susceptible to the cold and during severe winters, their numbers can be reduced by up to eighty percent, this is why they choose to roost in a bunch huddled together in a thorn bush to try and keep warm. The nest of the long tailed tit is quite a work of art. A compact domed structure lined with feathers of moss and animal hair, some from our own hair brush, all woven together with cobwebs. The cobwebs gives the nest some elasticity, which enables it to expand to accommodate the chicks as they grow. The young will remain in the nest for up to three weeks. Some years ago, when I was involved with wildlife care and rescue, a woman who was a newcomer to Cilcain phoned and asked me to come and identify a well worn path through the wood next to her house. She thought it might be deer. I quickly ruled out deer and said it was badger and as badger setts are usually about half a mile apart and knowing the location of other setts in the area, quickly found a small but active three hole sett. To see this sett, I had to crawl under a large blackthorn bush and there Copyright © February 2018 Eddie Wilde.

in the bush was a long tailed tit nest with the hen bird just peeping out of the entrance hole with its long tail folded forward over its head. That answered the question "how do they position their long tail whilst sitting on eggs". If February is a mild month, pairing will take place early, this is a wise move as there is always a surplus of males in the group which has over wintered together. These "bachelor males" will help with the feeding of a large clutch of young and make a valuable contribution to the survival of the family group, as the young will continue to be fed when they have left the nest. This all contributes to the bonding of the group. They won't travel far from where they were hatched and will stick together for support. I haven't seen any winter visiting woodcock yet, maybe it's not so cold and harsh in Northern Europe to drive them further south or maybe I haven't been in the right place at the right time. I'm always glad to hear what other bird watchers have seen. Pat "my eyes in Gwernymyndd" has phoned to say, like last winter she has a male black cap one of the Sylvia warbler and has photographed it in her garden. Most go south, but if they have a good territory they will stay all year round. More next time.

A note from your County Councillor I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and I hope that in this troubled world this year is a better year for us all. I also hope that you all had a good “flu free” Christmas!! I am writing this article after just putting my telephone down on a gentleman who claimed to be from Microsoft and who also claimed that my computer had been hacked. He stated he was calling from the Thames Business Park and offered me a security number that he wanted me to check on my computer. Sadly we all get far to many of these calls and I must admit he was persistent despite my assertions that with his strong accent it was highly unlikely that he was from London or Microsoft. Please take care when you get these calls because Microsoft would not normally call you. I find that the best line of defence is just to say that you do not have a computer. They then soon terminate the call. Once again we had chaos around Cadole and Loggerheads during the snow before Christmas. Every man and his dog arrives from all points North East at the first sign of snow and they abandon their cars on both sides of the A494 causing bottlenecks and obstructions on the highway. They also break down the fences of the neighbouring fields in Cadole and leave broken sledges and litter for the local farmer to clean up. I am in the process of calling a meeting which will include representatives from Countryside Services, Denbighshire’s Highways and Enforcement teams, North Wales

Police, the Trunk Roads Agency and the Chairs of both Llanferres and Gwernymynydd Community Councils plus the local Flintshire County Councillor. I will be looking for ways to manage the large numbers of people who come to the area when ever we have heavy snow falls, how we keep the roads open and how we stop the damage to farmers fences and the littering of local farmers fields. This should include the enforcement of highway regulations in that area and ways to help the movement of people by ensuring access is clear to places such as the Country Park and Moel Famau. I will report on the outcome of that meeting in the next edition of News and Views and If you have any comments on this issue please let me know. After the snow started to melt we had the same old problem in Tyn Llan with water running down both sides of the road. More worryingly we had water running across the road which if it froze could cause dangerous driving conditions. I asked DCC to check the gullies again and with 24hrs of my request the county had cleaned all the gullies at the top of the road by the school. Sadly, as we all know this is a bigger issue because the underground pipes that take the water away along the side of the school playing field are blocked by tree roots. Once again I have asked for work to be undertaken to resolve this problem. I am also pleased to confirm that work has started in the Cilcain Road in Tafarn Y Gelyn to resolve the pooling of water in various places along the road. There will be a temporary road closure in place between the 7th to the 9th of

A note from your County Councillor February to complete further patching work. As many of you will have seen there has been a reported case of Hepatitis A in Brynhyfryd School in Ruthin. I did raise some concerns with the director of education because our school Ysgol Bro Famau is a feeder School, we use their swimming pool facilities and because we are a feeder school some of our children may have siblings at the senior school. I have been assured that this is an isolated case but as a precaution they are intending to inoculate a number of children in the same year this coming week. DCC will also contact parents if any other course of action is required and they have reminded everyone that we should all always stick to basic hygiene rules to prevent the spread of any germs. The Public Broad Band meeting in Llanarmon Yn Ial on the 7th December was very well attended. The Welsh Government Minister Julie James and reps from both BT and Openreach were present and they took away a number of issues for further investigation. Since our campaign to improve the roll out of Superfast Broad across our ward we have been successful in getting more properties linked to the service and a further new cabinet in Eryrys which will provide a Superfast service to over a hundred more households. There is still a long way to go and Welsh Government have yet to confirm how they will finance the next phase of the Superfast Broad Band roll out and who who will provide the infrastructure or service. Once we have the final details of all those properties who will not get the current service and when we get the final details of schemes that will be on offer from both the Welsh and Central Government we can then look

for alternative solutions. I have asked DCC to consider organising a number of open days where residents can meet alternative providers and the three Community Councils in our ward have asked me to continue the fight for not only better broad band but better telephone and mobile phone reception in all of our communities. Can I congratulate the Community of Maeshafn on their Christmas Tree and the new lights provided by the Community Council. It was good to see so many residents from the village at the switching on of the lights and I must admit that the mince pies and mulled wine provided by the Miners Arms was a welcome finishing touch to an excellent evening. Our thanks also go to Allan Morgan and his team for all their hard work and to the volunteer who obviously had no fear of heights when it came to putting the lights up on the tree!! Finally I attended the Llanferres Carnival Committee meeting last night and preparations are well in hand for what should be a great community event. There is also a Valentines evening planned for the 10th February to help raise money for the Carnival and hopefully many of you will be able to support that event as well. Sheila and her team are doing a sterling job and if anyone can help man a stall on the day or just help out I know that they will be pleased to hear from you. Best wishes, Martyn

The Llanferres Hearse House Originally a hearse was a wooden frame that held candles. When a corpse was brought into the church the wooden framework was placed over the body and the candles lit. Later the term was used for a funeral car which would be kept in a hearse house in, or adjacent to, the churchyard. Hearse houses were often built in the nineteenth century. The original Llanferres hearse house was built in 1850-1. The craftsmen involved were John Jones, mason; William Jones, carpenter and Samuel Jones, roofer (we do not know whether they were related). The itemised cost of construction survives in the church records. The total cost was £10-6-5½. Two shillings of which was for the supply of ale from the Druid to the workmen. Carrying building stone to the site was apparently thirsty work as the carter was given six pints of ale (the mason got only two pints)! Part of the churchyard wall had to be demolished to accommodate the new building which was positioned with the doors facing the highway at the north east corner of the Druid yard. The main architectural features of interest were the recess for the doors and the arch above. The building stone for which had been carefully selected. The accounts record "getting stones in the mountain for arch and recess 1½ days at 3/- per day". The building was 5.5 m long by 3.3 m wide. On completion the church yard wall was rebuilt to abut the building in order to secure the burial ground. The next reference to the hearse house is in 1907 when the building was repaired by Mr Williams, and Mr

Bellis, coachbuilder, "thoroughly repaired" the hearse. At the same time a second-hand set of black horse harness was bought from a Mr Morris. The building was demolished in 1986, and a number of adjacent graves exhumed, during the Llanferres trunk road improvement scheme. This provided space for the construction of the service road that now runs between the Druid carpark and Tyn Llan. At the time of the demolition it was reported that the hearse house "accommodated trolleys, carts and bricks for lining graves". The hearse house was then reconstructed in its present position within the churchyard. There are very few hearse houses remaining in their original condition. There are three in our area - at the Church of St. Garmon, Llanarmon yn Ial, at the Church of St. Mary, Cilcain and at St. Mwrog's Churchyard, Ruthin. All three have been Listed by Cadw because of their rarity.
