Vera Stobbs would like to thank everyone who came to her 90th Birthday Party for making it such a lovely event. Vera asked for donations to two charities in lieu of gifts. She was delighted to give £246 to REMAP (Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers. They use their ingenuity and skills to help people with disabilities to achieve muchdesired independence in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously closed to them) And also £50 to Air Ambulance. Vera would also like to thank her friends and neighbours for the amazing surprise gift of a flying lesson at Hawarden Airport, which she is looking forward to taking later this year. However,Vera regrets not having taken any photographs on the night and wonders if anyone had any that she could have a copy of to remember the occasion by. Many thanks.

Christmas Very many thanks to all those who helped to decorate the Church before Christmas and for the kind donation by Graham Harvey of the splendid Christmas tree. More people than usual attended the several special services during the Christmas period and I'm sure appreciated the beauty of the Church. Dr Wendy was busy as usual before Christmas baking cakes, puddings and meals for those who placed orders and the Treasurer is grateful for her generous donation to the Church for these items. Very many thanks to Wendy and to those who placed the orders. Shrove Tuesday Drs Wendy and Nigel will be hosting their usual Pancake Evening at Dragon House on Shrove Tuesday, 21st February, this year starting at 7pm. The proceeds will be shared between Llanferres Church and Rotary International for the Northern Cleft Foundation. Please see Wendy's poster on a separate page for further details and ticket prices.

Llanferres Holiday Club Llanferres Holiday Club Extraordinary Meeting Wednesday 1st February, 8pm Druid Inn, Llanferres This is to inform anyone who may be interested of an extraordinary meeting to decide the future of the Llanferres Holiday Club. The numbers of children attending club has fallen despite all the best efforts of the committee to promote it. This has meant that on several occasions the club has been unable to open during holidays and these continuing low numbers are making it unsustainable. There is now the additional issue of insufficient committee members to efficiently manage this childcare facility. The committee is made up of parents whose children do, or did, attend the club. If anyone is interested in joining the committee or taking on some of the responsibility in order to continue its provision of childcare in the community they are invited to come to the meeting on Wednesday 1st February, or contact Kay by phone on 07944 603923 for more information.

The place was much better than when I was here last 3 years ago, the shops were full of stuff, there were cars on the road and petrol was plentiful and relatively cheap. Maeshafn Cricket Club News We are in the middle of our winter nets at the moment. After somewhat optimistically holding a few sessions before Christmas (it still seems wrong to play cricket before New Years Day) we pitched up for our first session of the year at the start of January, and discovered that Maeshafn Cricket Club has over 20 enthusiastic cricketers this winter! It makes a change from years gone past when running a net session involved physically dragging unwilling volunteers along to make up the numbers and break even. The Club President, John the Caravan has even been known over the years to make an appearance in the nets. The club has engaged the services of a coach to beat us into shape. Now that Dave Williams is no longer captain we miss our regular beatings before practice and matches. Those were the days... Dave Williams, for those occasionally read this column, or who have had the experience of receiving a John Smiths can to the head as they walk through Maeshafn, is the former skipper, notorious for scaring the opposition, the umpires and his own players. Here is a picture of Dave, sunbathing during a

match at Anglesey Aluminium a few seasons ago: Our winter coach is the captain of Brymbo CC (Welsh Premier League side) and seemed a little surprised at the first net session to discover that Maeshafn CC is not populated by finely tuned athletes (apart from Sean Thomas of course). After the third player had failed to catch a ball during a simple drill, he decreed that 10 press ups were due each time we misfielded. Tom Hall pointed out that we did not have a defibrillator on site and this could turn out to be quite a dangerous exercise! Considering one of our finest fielders rarely ventures out onto the pitch without a can of lager and a pack of cigarettes, I think this request was wishful thinking on the part of our coach.

I have suggested for this week that we who go for a 5 mile run and a moonlit swim in the River Alun during our training evening as part of our fitness exercise. We shall see what the coach thinks. Anyway, if anyone wants to join the club this year, please get in touch.

Northern Cleft Foundation Northern Cleft is a small charity which originated in Blackburn, when a small team of anaesthetists went over to Mysore, India to help set up a training school. They visited a small village and realised there were a large number of children with cleft lip and palate problems whose families could not afford the operations to repair their problem. A small team went out to Mysore and operated on 32 children, From then, the team grew and now includes anaesthetists, surgeons and theatre staff. They all fund the cost of travel, hire of a local hospital, and additional equipment from fundraising and their own pockets. They are helped by the local Rotary group who help to co-ordinate publicity and organisation in India. Families travel long distances to reach the hospital.
