County Councillors report: County Councillor Martyn Holland reported: a) That there had been a very long meeting to try to set a budget, but one had been agreed. The gate giving access from the playing field to the cemetery and the small white gate near the entrance to the school will be locked in future. The gates allowing pedestrian access to the school and hall will not be locked. d)The planning applications for Big Covert are to be considered by a Full Planning Committee in February - if members of the public have any objections to the planning applications will they please bring them forward (two members of the public, one for

The Joint Advisory Committee of the AONB have written to the National Trust to ask them to enforce the covenant that exists for Big Covert. The existence of 'Permitted Development Rights' will be checked. e) Bus services are still being discussed but it is likely that there will need to be cuts to some routes. f) The expected faster broadband still needs some connections to be made before it will be fully operational. 5. News from the Druid Inn

Thank you to all the groups in the Village who have supported us over the Christmas period, we very much appreciate it. At the end of February we will have been looking after the Druid for 21 years, we have made many good friends and seen the ebb and flow of a vibrant, mature village environment.

Enjoy a pint or two of some of our most popular guest ales from 2014. Our standard Marstons Burton Bitter is always available.

After much deliberation the time has come to ‘pass on the baton’, nothing is imminent, but the business is on the market.

Local News Wendy & Nigel’s Pancake Evening Shrove Tuesday, 17th February from 6 pm At 1 Bryn Eithen, Llanferres, Mold, CH7 5SJ Joint Fundraising for Llanferres Church and Welbodi Wendy and Nigel are once again hosting a Pancake Evening at their home and this will be a good opportunity to meet friends and be well fed! Valuable funds for Llanferres Church will be raised and a donation will be given to the Welbodi Foundation through the Rotary Club of Mold. Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 for children, to cover the cost of plentiful pancakes and refreshments. There will also be an abundant supply of cakes on the cake stall and pork rolls to be purchased separately. Welbodi is a charity founded in 2008 which works in Sierra Leone to help fund the training of paediatricians in the capital, Freetown. Welbodi has plans in place to recruit a consultant paediatrician to train local graduate doctors, who will, in turn, train a new generation of doctors. Previous experience has shown that in-country training is necessary to ensure sustainability. Currently there are only two paediatricians in government service to meet the needs of a country with over one million children. Plans are currently on hold for this training because of the Ebola virus. The Welbodi Foundation, however, is determined to proceed with this long term project. It is hoped funding will be in place by early summer ready to implement the training as soon as Ebola is eradicated. The tragedy is that the Ebola outbreak has distracted attention from ‘preventable diseases’ including malaria, diphtheria and diarrhoea and this is thwarting efforts to bring them under control. These ‘preventable diseases’ kill more children and adults than Ebola, which is why Welbodi’s plans are so important. If you can’t come, but would like to support the Church and Welbodi, please consider sending a donation to Wendy. Nigel &Wendy Shillito, Patrick & Daryl Austin

THANK YOU to everyone who helped before, during and after our Quiz Night on 24th January. There was an excellent turn out, with 70 people in the Hall enjoying an evening that was a little bit different! In a very closely fought contest with only a few points between the teams until the very end, the Ever Hopefuls triumphed overall, and also took the prize for the handout quiz. In all an amazing £1,312 was taken on the night with every penny after costs going towards your local magazine, which meant a final contribution of £658, exceeding our expectations and enabling us to give £50 each to the Church and Old Peoples Welfare Committee, as part of our reciprocal arrangement made in 2014.

Above: The immaculately coutured barmen seem to be enjoying the evening! Left: Meanwhile the scorer is still hard at work.

Local News The ranks of Llanferres Female Voice Choir were swollen this year with a 15 strong ‘choir’ setting out for carol singing on Friday December 5 The usual ‘volume’ section was strengthened by the addition of two new carollers who can actually sing! Steve Clarke and Kate (Rectory Lane) both have amazing voices, knew the tunes AND the words and even the odd descant! They also strengthened the ‘tune’ section of the ‘choir’, which previously comprised Llanferres’ answer to the Von Trappe family (The Cordiners). Mr Adrian Walls wept when he heard ‘The First Noel’. Mr P Gothorp was heard to comment that ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ was definitely ‘a bit dodgy’, but ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’ was almost indescribable. The ‘choir’ finished the evening in the Druid, where customers paid for special requests. The most popular being ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Get lost and go way’. An amazing £300 was extracted from innocent residents and pub goers for the OAP Christmas Lunch, which was the next day, and another great success. Thank you to all involved and all who donated.

It can take several forms - white damp (carbon monoxide), fire damp (mainly methane), stink damp (hydrogen disulphide) and choke damp (carbon dioxide; also known as black damp). The last is perhaps the most insidious in its effect on humans in that when the peril is realised it is usually too late for the victim to escape. This atmosphere is odourless, severely depleted in oxygen and incapable of sustaining human or animal life. In 1854 the Bryn Gwyn lead mine, near the Owain Glyndwr pub, was a small mine. It had two mine shafts about 80 yards apart that were 60 and 80 yards deep respectively. In order to ventilate the mine coal was burnt in an open brazier positioned on the surface about 12 yards away from the top of one of the mine shafts. The idea being that the up draught from the fire would draw air up one shaft and fresh air down the other. In late August men began to complain about poor air in the mine - candles did not burn properly and men had trouble breathing. On the 4th September the morning shift failed to surface and several men were sent down the 80 yard shaft to investigate. Choke damp was

present and one rescuer, a miner from Maeshafn, immediately collapsed and had to be helped out. He was subsequently ill for two weeks but never fully recovered and suffered breathing difficulties and week limbs thereafter. Sadly the whole morning shift, consisting of six men and one boy (the fourteen year old son of one of the miners) had all succumbed to the choke damp. It was noted on the day of the tragedy that the ventilation in the mine was poor as there was no wind and the fire in the brazier was not blazing. The verdict at the coroner’s inquest was that the men “were casually suffocated and smothered in a lead mine from the effect of impure air”. Fortunately mining tragedies involving whole shifts of men were rare in the north east Wales metal ore field. The worst incident was in 1862 at the Bryn Gwiog lead mine on Halkyn Mountain when miners holed into flooded ancient workings. Sixteen men were drowned. In both these cases poor mining practices were responsible for the tragedy. The passing of the Metalliferous Mines Act in 1872 prohibited many dubious practices and made working in mines much safer.

A note from your County Councillor As I am writing this report for News and Views I am also packing my bags for trip to the States to visit my mother. fences and left rubbish around one of our farmers fields in Colomendy. I have asked the County if they will grit the roads to Moel Famau at weekends during the winter to try and encourage visitors into the park instead. As a county we need to recognise that tourism is important all year around and access needs to be maintained to our designated parks.

Sadly I have to report that the parking ticket machines at Moel Famau have been broken into again, the second time in six months. It is not the loss of the cash that is the big issue but the damage to the machines that then cost hundreds of pounds to repair. If you see any suspicious activity in the area please report it to the police or to the Countryside Services team at Loggerheads.

Nature Notes Some of the winter mornings can be magical as the dawn sun rims the black upper outline of Big Covert with a blush pink gradually deepening to pale rose and reflecting off the dark clouds turning their undersides a delicate blueish, dove-grey. A pair of Woodpigeons sat atop a tall conifer as a bevy of 'chacking' Jackdaws left their night-time roost, spreading out to forage on neighbouring fields. The silhouette of a squirrel scampering along a denuded tree branch enhanced the bucolic scene. A few days later the countryside became a 'Winter Wonderland' as it was covered in a blanket of snow (not appreciated by all). But even as the snow came down a Robin sang on the garden shed gable and a pair of Collared Doves 'Coo-cood' atop a Rowan tree. Later in the day, during sunny interludes, I heard a Dunnock's quiet but pleasant warble, the strident 'Teacher-teacher-teacher' of a Great tit, a Coal tit entreated us to come 'to-me, to-me', a Nuthatch whistled the raucous Rooks (sorry for the alliteration) gave out their noisy calls, all signalling that spring and the breeding season is imminent. I was also pleased to see a Bank vole scurrying along the base of the garden fence where the snow was almost absent. Easily distinguished from a mouse by its short nose and chubbier appearance, voles do no harm and we have them nesting regularly in the garden. During the coming weeks bird song will increase exponentially as the days lengthen and already I am looking forward to the first summer migrants due in March.

On the subject of birds; each year we record the bird species we see in the garden and so far we have a list of 57 species, which admittedly includes five or six which were only seen flying over such as Curlew, Mallard and Canada geese. However, it does include some unusual ones, not normally associated with a garden environment, and some unexpected rarities. We have had Buzzard, Tawny owl, Raven and Whitethroat actually in the garden on occasion and Grey wagtail(normally a bird of river and streams) visiting our garden pond. The rarities included Tree sparrow, Lesser spotted woodpecker(also known as Barred woodpecker) and Hawfinch. The latter really is a rarity, which I have only seen a handful of times in my life, so a pair in my garden kindled a small frisson of excitement. We have also had seventeen species of butterfly, most of them quite common but on one occasion we had a Whiteletter hairstreak and that is a rare butterfly by anyone's standard and a species of conservation concern. It requires Elm as a larval food plant and there are some Wych elm growing in the hedge but, being a single specimen, I do not think it was able to breed. I have recorded it locally but only a couple of times. It just shows that anything can turn up at any time, so keen observation can sometimes be rewarded.
