Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The Gardening Club Meeting was held at the Village Hall on 8th June, 2015. Our Speaker this month was Mr David Locke, Head Gardener at Chirk Castle and his topic was Chirk Castle Gardens. Mr Locke illustrated his talk with slides showing the Castle which was built in the late 13th century by Roger Mortimer. The castle was sold to Sir Thomas Myddleton in 1595 and his descendants continue to live in part of the castle today. The iron gates at the entrance feature the coat of arms of the Myddleton family and date back to 1719. These gates are the work of the Davies Brothers from Bersham, Wrexham. The Castle and grounds are now managed by the National Trust and span 5.5 acres which include lawns, clipped yews, herbaceous borders, rose, shrub and rock gardens. A very interesting talk illustrating plants, shrubs and trees together with the lovely surrounding views from the Castle. The refreshments were provided by Mrs Joan Almond and the Raffles were won by Mrs Karen Langford and Mr John Almond. The next gardening event is a visit to Dove Cottage, Penyffordd on 13th July, 2015. Everybody wishing to go on the evening visit to meet on the road near the Church at 6.30 pm where arrangements will be made to car share. Christine Smith, Hon Secretary Tel No. 01352 810516

News from FlintShare Community Gardens The FlintShare gardens at Cilcain, Northop and Hawarden are all shooting up. Stuff grows so fast this time of year! The Northop polytunnels have fed us royally through the usually lean last couple of months with delicious new potatoes, stupendous salads (with plenty of Peter’s wonderfully experimental crops) and the most productive chard ever. And that’s just three of them! While the tunnels now care for our tender tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers etc the Cilcain Garden will take over the summer crops. We’ve planted everything from cabbages to cucumbers, beetroot to berries, squash to salsify. The flowers are now humming with our honey bees and hoverflies. The newly planted orchard is in full flower and the birds are singing every day. They’re also eating all our brassicas the blighters! We’ve planned a Retreat Weekend at Cilcain in July for all things contemplative and fun. FlintShare has started working with Cilcain school. Peter Rogers and Pam Worthington have started a popular veg club and the kids have been down to the Cilcain garden to build bug hotels for us. We have started a Saturday Veg Hub at Northop to make it easier for folk to get their veg regularly. We crop it from all three gardens and put it ready for members to collect. It’s made quite a nice get together time for a chat, a coffee and maybe a wander round the tunnels. We love visitors! We’re at Cilcain garden Tuesdays, most Fridays and usually a weekend day too. LLANFERRES BA END OF SEA It’s fair to say it’s been a very successful year for the club. Both the juniors and the seniors have thrived from new faces and have produced impressive results as well as an admirable and positive atmosphere on a Thursday night. The A and B team have both exceeded start of season expectations with the A team battling incredibly hard to gain promotion back into division 1 with only Flint Phoenix finishing higher (notably only Flint beating the A team all season). The A team also progressed to the semi-final of the NEWBA cup, only losing out to a strong Deeside of division 1. Meanwhile in division 3 Llanferres B team got themselves into the record books, finishing higher than they ever have at a solid 4th place. Very close results meant that they could have progressed even higher. In the NEWBA cup the B team were also unfortunate to draw Llanferres A team which resulted in the A team progressing through on 12th February after a hard fought battle. With lots of new faces that have been able to improve though coaching, the B team will have their eyes on promotion next season as well as the hope of fielding a C team in the league for the first time. The junior club has continued to produce some quality players this season with the vision of breaking into the senior club and the league teams. Home grown players such as Nick Prtak, Declan Boner and William Fellows have been crucial figures in the progression of the B team this season as well as the fresh faces of Ben Garnett and Lee Garratt being crucial reserves. The club has flourished this season and is in perfect stead for more success in September! If you would like to get involved whatever your badminton experience, contact Jane Givelin on 07581435144.

A note from your County Councillor As many of you will already know we are sadly losing our head teacher Rebecca Turner who is moving on to a much larger school near Wrexham. This is a good promotion for Rebecca who has been with us for over five years during which time the school has gone from strength to strength. Only this week we learnt at the governors meeting that our children have done extremely well in their annual tests and that the results are well above the Welsh average. Our thanks go to Rebecca and her team for all their hard work and commitment and we wish Rebecca well in her new appointment. I should point out that the recruitment process for a replacement head teacher is well underway.

the police to keep an eye on the area and especially to look out for cars parked in the lay by on the A494 late at night. Some of these youngsters have no respect for our countryside and they have been cutting down trees and making bonfires which are a serious fire risk in this wooded area.

I have received a number of complaints about groups of young people who are camping and partying at Pot Hole Cliffs. They are leaving large amounts of rubbish including broken glass, old tents, sleeping bags, etc and there is also evidence of them painting graffiti on the cliffs themselves. My thanks go to some of the neighbours who have kindly cleared away the rubbish and who collected up to six or more bags of rubbish after one event. There have been three such incidents so far this year in an area that is popular with both walkers and climbers.

This is very good news for visitors, businesses and residents who live within 500 metres of the park which is currently a dead spot for mobile phones, iPads, etc. This is all part of the counties move towards what is called Digital Denbighshire and hopefully we will see Digital Denbighshire completed over the next twelve months with the roll out of FTTP and FTTC Superfast Broad Band.

As the situation becomes clearer as to which villages will be connected to which systems I will let you know. I attended the Log Fest Event over the weekend of June the 6th & 7th which once again appears to have been a great success. I hope that before next years event the county will have

A note from your County Councillor completed the additional parking at the rear of the Loggerheads Country park which is so badly needed. I have been pressing for additional funding to complete the work as Loggerheads is the Gateway not only to the Country Park but to Ruthin and the surrounding areas which all rely on visitors and tourism. You will have seen recently that Welsh Government have announced a grant of 2.5 million pounds to Denbighshire for Housing. As worthy as this is, I find it difficult to understand how they have found this money when they have already cut our budgets this year by 8 million pounds and are telling us to tighten our belts even further next year. I believe this is just another example of how Welsh Government wants to micro manage Local Government in Wales and dictate our spending plans from Cardiff. Welsh Government have also announced this week their proposed new map for local government in Wales. Despite all the consultations it is no surprise that the favoured option is to return to the two old counties of Gwynedd and Clwyd here in North Wales. With the removal of district councils under the last reorganisation these proposal will mean the end of the term "local government" as we know it and this reorganisation will move local services further away from us all. We should remember that Big is not necessarily beautiful!! On a final note, I attended an annual training session this month regarding

my role as a Corporate Parent. All County Councillors have a duty to act as corporate parents for all the children in the counties care. In Denbighshire we have approximately 180 children in care, the vast majority of whom I am pleased to say are with Foster parents. Denbighshire are always looking for people who would like to act as Foster Parents and if you feel you can fulfil that role you should contact Denbighshire's social services department who will be pleased to hear from you. I hope that you all have a great summer and that the weather is kind to us all. Best wishes, Martyn

Nature Notes Do House martins go hunting for nest sites communally and then make collective decisions for individual birds? I ask this question after watching the antics of a number of these birds on two occasions. The first was when about twenty House martins were gathered in a quite noisy group around the side of the school. They were swooping and chattering and several birds at a time would land and cling to the wall face close to the gutter while the others flew back and forth chattering loudly. Eventually they all flew off and must have decided that the site was unsuitable as no nests were built. Several days later, six or eight of these birds congregated round an artificial nest which we have attached to the front of our house. Again there was a lot of coming and going and chattering. Some birds held on to the wall and others seemed to take it in turns to enter the nest as if examining it to see if it was suitable. After a time they dispersed but a few days later we discovered that a pair had taken up residence. Had they made a personal choice or had it been necessary to get the approval of the flock? I was then telephoned by a local lady to tell me that House martins were nesting on her house from where they had been absent for several years. Why this sudden flurry of activity? I suspect that they had lost their habitual sites, possibly because of demolition or refurbishment. On the subject of martins, I was pleased to see a Sand martin (or

perhaps a pair) in the vicinity of where a pair nested last year in the bank of the River Alyn. I also watched as House martins and Swallows swooped down on a smooth part of the river, briefly touched the water with a little splash and flew on. I could not determine whether they were picking insects off the water surface or actually taking a drink. This year is proving disappointing in the number of butterflies I have seen. After the mild winter I had hoped there would be good numbers of spring butterflies but unfortunately it has not been the case and I attribute this to the constant cold wind we have experienced, even on what otherwise would have been warm, sunny days. Yet there are anomalies. Pearlbordered fritillaries seem to be doing well and, in some places, Small heaths are numerous but then the latter are tough little creatures which are able to fly when other species are sheltering in the herbage. I saw my first Green hairstreak on the same date as last year and the Small pearl-bordered fritillary earlier than last year. The rare, and delicate, Wood white, which can be seen in parts of Shropshire, emerged from its overwintering pupa right on cue in the first week of June, but I did not see it until a week later. Even places which are usually 'hot spots' for butterflies, both locally and in the warmer south where I was recently, have shown a dearth of these insects. One can only hope that things will improve as summer progresses. John Almond (01352 810808
