Welcome Welcome to the July and August edition of News & Views Now is the time to be cultivating those flowers and vegetables, trying out your recipes and practising your floral arrangements for this year's gardening show, which is only 9 weeks away - Saturday 2nd September! Let's hope the weather is kind to us this year. If you haven't already done so, please be sure to book your place on the Older Person's Summer Outing to Southport (see page 14). There will be plenty of seats on the coach, so if you're only a youngster (under 60) and fancy a day out, you would be

more than welcome. Please contact a Committee member ASAP. Finally, just a reminder that this is a two month summer issue and the next News & Views will be the September edition with a 20th August deadline.

Best Wishes Paul & Siobhan

LLANFERRES PARISH GARDENING CLUB Unfortunately the outing in June to the N.G.S. Garden of Mrs Readhead in Chester had to be cancelled and, as an alternative meeting could not be arranged, there is no report for June. The next date for members is July 10th when there will be an outing to N.G.S. Garden 'Pen y Graig' at Tremeirchion. Those members who have booked should meet at St Berres Church gate at 6.00pm. The cost is £5.00 to include refreshments. Should anyone else wish to join us please telephone me by July 3rd (number at end of article). The next meeting, on August 14th, is to arrange the final details for our Annual Show. We need members to commit to the Show preparation on evening of September 1st for our Show on September 2nd. May I also remind members that we will be having a plant stall at the Show and need contributions. Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond ℡ 01352 810808

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club 43rd Annual Show Reminder The show schedule was distributed with News & Views last month and copies are also available at the Druid Inn and Loggerheads garage. You can download a copy from www.llanferres.org too. Although some categories are restricted to Llanferres Parish residents or Garden Club members, the Art, Photography, Floral Art, Home, Adult Handicraft and Junior sections are open to all. We have also introduced some Novice classes this year. Hopefully, there is something for everyone. You don’t have to be a serious gardener, something as simple as a single bloom could win you a prize. If gardening isn’t your thing, why not get painting, taking photographs or producing some handicrafts. New exhibitors are always welcome.

A note from your County Councillor I have just returned from a week’s holiday in the West Country where we rented a cottage near Tavistock on the fringes of Dartmoor. The weather was kind to us and we enjoyed a very pleasant break. Over the last couple of months we have had a number of terrorist attacks in the UK including last night’s madness in Finsbury Park. Our television screens have also been filled with the graphic details of the horrendous fire in the tower block in London. Our thoughts must be with the families of those who have lost loved ones in the attacks and the fire and we must all continue to work together to resist those who want to divide us. At County Hall Plaid have now decided that they cannot work in a cabinet which includes Conservative members. This seems a little strange when they have worked happily with Conservatives in cabinet for the last five years. It now looks as if the county will be run by a coalition of Independents, Liberals and Conservatives who between them will have a working majority. In Denbighshire we have always tried to work together and to include all parties/groups in the cabinet. To date the Labour Party have opted to take the role of the formal opposition and Plaid will now join them. This is not necessarily a bad thing because in any good democracy it is important that you have an effective opposition.

I am pleased to announce that I have just had confirmation that the Welsh Government have agreed to change the current Give Way at the junction by Valley Lodge to a formal Stop. This will mean that in future all motorists must stop before turning onto the B5430. We have been asking for changes on this stretch of road for some years and we have eventually achieved the result we have been looking for. With the rumble strips, increased road markings and the new Stop sign I hope this will make this junction a lot safer. I have also been chasing the county regarding the visibility problems at the junction where the road from Eryrys and more importantly the school, joins the B5430. At the moment when you come to the junction, as you look to your right, your visibility has been restricted by trees and a high hedge. DCC had stated that the hedge was the responsibility of the land owner and so I met three months ago with Welsh Water and a contractor on site to see what could be done at this junction to ensure the safety of all road users, parents and school children. Once again I am pleased to announce that Welsh Water have removed two trees and lowered the height of the hedge which has had a great impact on the visibility on what was again a dangerous stretch of road. I have received a lot of complaints recently about the sudden appearance of caravans in fields and asking if changes to properties in the area have had planning permission.

News & Views It is important to note that caravans cannot be sited permanently in fields without planning permission. Small touring caravans can be placed in a field during the lambing season for up to six weeks to accommodate farm workers but they must be removed when lambing has been completed. It has been brought to my attention that people have bought small pieces of farmland in the ward and sadly they appear to want to develop them. Any change of use of designated agricultural land requires planning permission and the county’s enforcement officers will take action against any unauthorised changes or developments. Small extensions to the rear of properties can be allowed under permitted development rights, but as we live in a Designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty these rules may not always apply. It is therefore important that you check the Planning Portal on the County’s website for advice before committing to any alterations to your property. It is important to note that even if you do not need planning permission you will still need building regulations approval. New access to properties or farm land from classified roads also need planning permission. Please seek advice from highways before ripping up hedges etc. If you do something without the correct permissions you may be asked to return your property to its original state which can be costly. Unauthorised extensions etc. may also cause you major problems if you ever come to sell your home. If you are unsure about a development and you want to check

to see if it has had planning permission you can view all planning applications via the County’s website. Finally, my mother and I were very pleased to attend the recent induction of the new Vicar and we would like to join everyone in wishing him and his family all the best in their new home, new roles and new country. Because of my week’s holiday I am still catching up with my e-mails and so if you have written to me in the last week please bear with me. I will respond as soon as possible. I hope that you are all enjoying the weather. Best wishes, Martyn

The Llanferres Pinfold A pinfold (or pound) was a small lockable structure for retaining cattle etc. It was used for holding animals that had been distrained for debt, or which had strayed onto the public highway or had trespassed on someone's land. The animals would be fed and watered by the pound keeper and his costs plus any other amount claimed by the person who had impounded them would have to be paid by the owner in order to reclaim them. The use of pounds dates back to Saxon times. Virtually every village had a pound. They were generally rectangular in shape and the walls were high enough to prevent the animals escaping. Early pounds were constructed from thorn hedges but later ones were stone built with lockable doors. In Llanferres the pound was situated on the east side of the main road close to Cacwn brook. (Convenient for watering the animals.) There are frequent entries in the church wardens' accounts for the maintenance of this pinfold. In fact there were 25 (mainly unspecified) repairs recorded in the 45 year period from 1673 to 1718. Perhaps it was not very well built or perhaps there had been frequent interference with the

structure (there is only one reference specifying the repair of the stone walling). Most pinfolds fell out of use after the Enclosure Acts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We do not know when the Llanferres one was demolished but it was mentioned in the church Terrier of 1791 and appeared on a highways diversion map drawn in 1811. There are so few pinfolds remaining today that they are usually Listed Buildings. The nearest existing pinfold is in Drovers Lane, Caerwys. This is an impressive structure built in limestone. It is about 8m by 5m in dimensions and is surrounded by castellated walls 2.5m high with slit openings to permit viewing of the interior. It is in the care of the Caerwys Town Council. The author also knows of two existing pinfolds on the Wirral at Capenhurst and at Spital. Both have been built of Cheshire sandstone and have been maintained in a good condition.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ During the sunny spells I have been watching the lizards come out and bask on the stone walls once the top stones have absorbed some warmth. They are quite relaxing as I sit with a mug of tea in my garden. Their colours are iridescent and shimmering when the sun is warm enough. These are the common lizard which is widespread throughout Britain, although more plentiful in the south east. This lizard unlike the sand lizard doesn't lay eggs, but gives birth to live young. This makes it viviparous, from five to nine young is average in a clutch and after a day or two they become totally independent, hunting for small insects in dry walls and log piles. Before getting their adult colours the young range from dull brown to metallic bronze. They grow quickly, although as adults they will only be about five cm. As a means to escape from predators these lizards are able to lose their tails, which after a time will grown back, this means some are seen with just a stump for a tail. A reminder of a lucky escape.

will result in very few, if any sand lizards hatching. Another one of our lizards is the slow worm. I have seen plenty of these on visits to Devon, but have not seen them in our area. I would be interested to know if anyone has seen them in North Wales. We are having birds hitting the windows and being killed instantly on a regular basis, not all of them juveniles It must be the sun or reflections. Migrating birds flying over big cities are hitting the reflections in glass sky scrappers and falling in large numbers. Groups of volunteers are picking up the injured and dead. The same is happening with wind farms, this is just another thing reducing bird numbers. Enjoy your summer gardening as plenty of flowers will suit the butterflies. More next time Eddie

On a trip to the beach we might be fortunate enough to see another one of our resident lizards. This is the much bigger sand lizard, which can grow up to 20 cm. in length making them not as agile as the smaller common lizard. Out of the breeding season the male and female don't look much different, then to attract a mate the male will develop bright green marking along their flanks. Different to the common lizard the female sand lizard will lay eggs and cover them with sand and hope they will hatch. This will depend entirely on the weather, a cold wet summer
