LOST PROPERTY

Would like to thank all family, friends and neighbours for their kind expressions of sympathy at the loss of Cyril. Many thanks for the cards, flowers and donations for Nightingale House Hospice, which totalled 拢500. Thank you all so very much Mal & Family

Did a guest at Alison & Mike's wedding leave a chunky (warm) purple scarf in the church? One appeared about this time and none of the congregation can identify it. If I can't reunite it with its owner by July 31st I intend to donate to a needy person at Save the Family. Thanks Gay Headley 01352 810224

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club At our meeting held on Monday June 10th, we had Kevin Bailey to give a talk entitled 'Hostas and Ferns'. This was a late booking due to the illness of Carl Madden, the previously booked speaker. In his talk, Mr Bailey began by saying some gardeners are reluctant Hosta growers because of the slug and snail problems. But with judicious use of organic slug pellets fortnightly, garlic wash, planting them in pots and the encouragement of hedgehogs, thrushes and frogs, damage to Hostas could be kept to a minimum. With the range of blue, green, yellow and variegated plants and leaf size anything from the size of a teaspoon to a dinner plate, there are varieties for every garden. In part two about Ferns, Mr Bailey spoke about a fraction of the 20,000 species of fern which grow around the world. They are generally regarded as the most complex of non-flowering plants, which reproduce themselves from leaf spores. Growing ferns from spores requires great attention to detail and, after one or two years, young ferns should be large enough for your garden. The greatest requirement, therefore, is patience. Our next meeting will be on July 8th when we will visit Cae yr Haul, the garden Mr T. M. Smith has made overlooking farmland at St Asaph. We meet at 6路15 pm outside Llanferres Village Church. Meeting open to the public for ten minutes: A member of the public complained about the number of cars parked in Maeshafn, often inconsiderately, on the day of a car rally in June. Considerable congestion ensued, causing inconvenience to other members of the public. Another member of the public considered the signage, behind the double yellow lines at Loggerheads, to be inadequate but conceded that the double yellow lines were having the desired effect. 4. County Councillors report: Councillor Holland reported that the Welsh Government had announced cuts to grants to local government and County Councils are likely to be the most affected. The Education Review is continuing and there are recommendations that 2-3 schools will be closed but there are plans to build a new large school. Ysgol Bro Famau is not effected but complacency would be unwise. The search for funding for additional car parking at Loggerheads Country Park is continuing but the Welsh Assembly will not supply any funds. The Loggfest had been successful but numbers were down

Landscape project - Memorial Stone: Discussion took place regarding replacement of the plaque on the Memorial Stone and the possible inclusion of the names of soldiers killed in conflicts. 11. The Clerk will look for suppliers of suitable paint as a member of the public has offered to paint the Telephone Box when it is installed. 12. The Community Council approved a grant of ÂŁ200, from the 'Community Chest', to the Senior Citizens Club to go towards the cost of the trip to Welshpool on June 14th.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Turnip, Potato & Parsley Soup It may be summer but we are still making gallons of soup and this recipe using baby turnips has a wonderful new season taste to it. If by the time you are reading this we are in the high 20s, it will be equally delicious chilled. Although everything is growing vigorously through June and July with the warm weather and inevitable rain, it can be a challenging time for locally sourced vegetables. The winter roots have all finished and the summer courgettes and beans have not quite got going yet. So, it was wonderful when grower extraordinaire Phil from Mostyn Gardens arrived bearing among other things baby turnips. To serve 4 300g turnips 200g potatoes 2 carrots 2 medium onions 1 litre vegetable stock sprig thyme large bunch parsley 2 tbsp olive oil 30g butter salt & pepper Roughly chop peeled or scrubbed turnips, onions, carrots and potatoes. Add olive oil and butter to a large pan and heat gently until butter has melted. Add chopped vegetables and sauté over a low heat until starting to soften but not brown. Separate parsley leaves and stalks. Put the leaves to one side. Add thyme, parsley stalks and stock to the vegetables and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for about 30 minutes until vegetables are soft. Remove from heat and remove thyme and parsley stalks. Add parsley leaves and blend until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Men of Llanferres in the Great War Almost 10,000 Royal Welshmen lost their lives in the Great War. At the outbreak, the Welsh Regiment had 7 battalions which expanded to 42 by the end of 1918, almost half serving in France and Flanders, but others as far afield as Gallipoli, Egypt, Italy, Palestine and Macedonia. The 1st battalion Welch Fusiliers first went into action on the 19th October 1914, 1,150 strong but by the end of that month were reduced to just 90 men, that, despite receiving reinforcements, after the desperate defence of Ypres, at the battle of Gheluvelt. During the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. the 38th Welch Division was given the task of clearing the strongly held Mametz Wood. A brigade attack was driven back on the 7th with heavy casualties, and the wood was not taken until the 12th after a Divisional scale attack, and the Germans finally withdrew. It was here another local soldier was to lose his life, aged just 19. Charles ("Charlie") Williams of Sawmill Cottage, Loggerheads was killed along with 30 of his comrades from Ruthin in the taking of the wood, one of the 600 missing of the 4,000 casualties. I hope to tell my account of Charlie in the next issue. The Denbighshire Free Press at that time reported the latest war news "in the desperate battles now taking place"….."all goes well" The General commanding the 38th Division issued a special order of the day stating "The reputation of the Welsh Division never stood higher than today" described as a "magnificent success"……."during the past 16 days of strenuous fighting" The Division had "met and smashed elements of 43 regiments"…"a truly glorious record". The impressive Welsh Dragon at Mametz Wood unveiled in 1987. The war office sanctioned the use of "Welch" in 1920 and the title "Fusiliers" in 1923 for the ordinary ranks. There were over 2,800 decorations awarded during the war, including eight Victoria Crosses. Famous Royal Welch included Robert Graves, Siegfried Sassoon and Hedd Wyn. With some irony Charlie was killed just a few kilometres from where John Cordiner was to lose his life a few weeks later, in fact, it is highly likely John was in the exact area, as the 1st Cheshires “took their tea” in the former No Man’s Land on the 19th of July before “bivouacking in an old German trench”. A strange co-incidence for former pupils of Llanferres school, so far from home.

Men of Llanferres in the Great War The first battle of the Somme lasted until November 13th 1916 with over 420,000 British casualties and the advance barely half way to the first day objective of Bapaume. General Haig recorded in his diary on July 2nd that the (underestimated) casualties on the first day "cannot be considered severe in view of the numbers engaged..." I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who has contacted me over the past few weeks with information. In particular I would like to thank Tony King who has perhaps identified a 9th WW1 soldier, Private Herbert Francis, killed in an accident with the occupational forces in Germany in December 1918. If anyone has any information on Private Francis, I would be very pleased to receive it. Likewise, any information on soldiers from WW2 and other conflicts. At the moment I have a few names taken from those buried in the churchyard, any other information again much appreciated. Thank you. Also, my particular thanks to Efion and Vivien Williams for their kind assistance and guidance. Please visit their excellent websites www.northopwm.com and its sister site www.flintshirewarmemorials.com for anyone interested in Flintshire soldiers in WW1. There is also a link on the News & Views website www.llanferres.org to a history of the 1st Cheshire Battalion for further reading. Only part 1 (1914) at this stage as it has proved impossible to condense any further - I hope to complete subsequent parts in the near future.

A note from your County Councillor Summer is here and I hope that we have some decent weather for all the local events planned for the next couple of months.

weather could have been kinder but people were still enjoying themselves. Thanks should also go to Colomendy who provided additional parking for the day and to the local youngsters who acted as car park attendants.

The problem of the lack parking space at Loggerheads is now an issue and i recently met with local politicians to see if i could solicit their support in getting additional funding to help provide extra parking in the area. I have received a letter from the Welsh Government minister Edwina Heart stating that funding for extra Car Parking at Loggerheads was a matter for Denbighshire and not the Welsh Government. This is bad news considering the importance of the Country Park as a tourist attraction and conflicts with the Welsh Governments recent statements about the importance of Tourism to Wales and the additional funding available for tourism projects.

The next stage of the Ruthin Area School review is underway with proposals to close, amalgamate and build new schools. These are now all out in the open for further consultation. The good news is that our own local school Ysgol Bro Famau will not be affected by the changes and this is in part down to the fact that it is seen as an excellent school with very good teaching standards and results. We are the only school not affected by the proposed changes but we can not afford to be complacent and we need to continue to support the school as a community for future generations.

The Trunk Roads Agency who are an arm of Welsh Government did imply that they would help with funding for additional parking if the county supported parking restrictions. Sadly this did not happen. I attended the Loggfest event at Loggerheads this last weekend and I would like to acknowledge all the hard work put in by the local businesses to make the event a success. The

As you may have read in the press Denbighshire County Council has reluctantly decided to accept the Welsh Governments Inspectors final position on the next LDP. The inspector had asked for additional land for a further 1000 homes on top of the 7500 the county had originally proposed. Denbighshire agreed to do this but wanted this land to be put on a reserve list. The inspector rejected this suggestion and personally added a further four parcels of land that we as a county had not considered.

A note from your County Councillor Many Councillors felt that we were being dictated to by the Inspector and that the Welsh Governments original figure of 8500 new homes for Denbighshire was being imposed on us.

Ysgol Bro Famau 100 Club Draw April 2013

This means that land for up to forty six new homes in Llanarmon will now be included in the LDP with out any restrictions but the good news is that the original plan for no further development in Llanferres in the new LDP remains.

1st prize £40- Rachel Lloyd 2nd prize £20- Jacqui Hunt 3rd prize £14- Philip Lewis

May 2013 To throw out the plan may have cost the council tax payer in Denbighshire a further two million pounds especially if we had to start the process all over again. It would have also left us without an LDP and vulnerable to applications for development anywhere in the county. These applications would have been difficult to oppose with out an LDP and costly to defend if taken to court.

1st prize £40- Declan Bonar 2nd prize £20 Gill & Gordon Sankey 3rd prize £14 Josh & Chris Griffiths

June 2013 1st prize £40- Mrs Parry 2nd prize £20- Alison Beaumont 3rd prize £14- Mrs Turner

On a final note I am pleased to announce that all the community councils in the ward have now produced a five year plan / wish list and if you would like anything to be included please let us know. I hope that you all have a great summer and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have and issues or problems that you need help with. Regards, Martyn

Nature Notes Red kite over Llanferres! Tim Griffiths kindly drew our attention to a Red Kite which was flying over Llanferres on Tuesday 18th of June. Did you see it? It was about for a couple of hours being harassed by Crows and Jackdaws. These Corvids really do not seem to like Kites as I witnessed them carrying out similar Red Kite harassment when I was in Oxfordshire recently. There, Red kites are so common that the warden impression that is the picture of a nature reserve told me he throughout. expected to see them every time he looked at the sky. Nature Notes have not seen any here for the last ten or so. They require a very precise habitat of bracken and Dog violet. The butterflies emerge in May - they were about two weeks late this year mate, lay eggs but may only live for about a week but some can live several weeks if conditions are suitable. The eggs hatch after 10-15 days and the caterpillars feed up to July when they hibernate in the bracken litter until the weather warms up in April or May of the following year. They then pupate for only 9-10 days before emerging as adult insects. The process is very weather dependant but it seems that the warm spell in late May/early June has favoured them this year. Have you noticed a red 'butterfly' flying at the moment. It is not a butterfly but the red and black Cinnebar moth with red/bright pink underwings. It is just emerging from

the pupa in which it has overwintered in the soil. It often flies by day and its yellow and black caterpillars feed on Ragwort. John Almond
