Local News Llanferres Short Mat Bowls Club

Llanferres have been competing over the Winter and Spring period in the Clwyd Vale Indoor Bowling Alliance league competition between 12 local villages. For the second year in a row Llanferres reached the final of the doubles competition beating sides such as Llandyrnog, Gellifor and Clawddnewydd on the way. Unlike last year, however, when we won the title, on this occasion we were beaten by a rejuvenated Llannefydd 9 to 3. The match was friendly yet keenly fought and we proudly received our runners- up trophy and silver medals. The evening, which was hosted by Llandyrnog, was completed by both teams socialising with splendid refreshments followed by a raffle. In the singles competition Llanferres reached the semi-final but were comprehensively beaten by Pwllglas 8 to 1 on their ultra-fast new mats. These results speak well for Llanferres as we are such a small club and are in great need of new blood to strengthen the team. We meet on Tuesday evenings at 7pm in the Village Hall and you would be most welcome. We are a friendly lot and have all the equipment needed. Come along, both young and old, try your hand and get some gentle exercise."

Gardening Club News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club After two failed attempts our members were finally able to visit Saith Ffynnon Farm on JUNE 2ND. Jan Miller - butterfly conservation officer of North Wales began by showing us her 9th Century Herbal Garden planted, as was the custom of the time, to provide cures for people at Monastery hospitals. With many Thymes, Pinks, Lovage and Saffron crocus in a Knot Garden form, this was only begun last year. Proceeding around the garden, there was a large pond full of Yellow Flag iris, a stack of pallet trays to make a large 'Bug House', and a wild meadow with various grasses, Blackthorn, Birdsfoot trefoil, Thistles, Sorrels and White campion - all necessary for the welfare of the 25 or so species of butterfly she has each year. Not a visit for garden aficionados but a superb 5 acres of natural habitat for butterflies, moths and other insects. At our meeting on 9TH JUNE, because our booked speaker was not available, we had Kevin Bailey, who came at short notice, to talk about composting and organic vegetable growing. Beginning with composting, this was necessary to spread on growing areas to keep the soil in good heart by building up the soil fertility. A mixture of 50% green and 50% brown waste plus a good watering was necessary to build up the heat which would kill all the weed seeds in the finished product. Turning to organic vegetable growing, Mr Bailey relied heavily on Heritage varieties and selected his own seed for following years from the finest specimens. Encouraging good insects and wildlife into a garden was best practice for they fed on pests such as aphids. Nematodes were useful for soil pests and at best he recommended inhibitors to discourage vine weevil. One had the impression that it was sowing, planting and harvesting every month of the year -true dedication and satisfaction for this gardener. Our next meeting, on Monday July 14th, will be a visit to the 'Yellow Book Garden' at Tan-y-Parc in Llanrhaeadr. Cost ÂŁ6.00 to include a cream tea. Further details from the Hon Secretary.

From the minutes of the meeting held on 12th June 2014:- Present: Cllr. David Jones (Chair), Cllr. John Almond, Cllr Yvonne Foden McCorry, Cllr Rob Jones, Cllr. Margaret Davies, the Clerk Mrs Gwyneth Dillon and County Councillor Martyn Holland. Apologies: Cllr. Jac Armstrong, Cllr. David Twomey. Declarations of Interest: None declared Casual Vacancy on the Community Council: This vacancy has occurred due to the resignation of Mrs Olive Parry as reported in last month's News & Views. This vacancy would normally be filled by the Community Council co-opting a suitable person onto the Council at no cost. However, due to ten local government electors in the community signing a request form asking that an election be held, the vacancy will now be filled by a byelection which will be held on Thursday 31st July 2014. The Community Council has been informed that the community will be charged a minimum of £1,891.83 for this byelection. This may lead to 'cut-backs' in some community projects. A notice of the by-election will be displayed on the Community Notice Boards from Thursday 26th June 2014. Meeting open to the public for ten minutes: It was reported that there is mud on the road near to the entrance to Aberduna Quarry. This is caused by soil being transported to the quarry for restoration work which should have been completed by November of last year. Contractors will be on site next week. There was also a complaint about gravel on the road to Maeshafn between The Nant and Pont-ymwynwr. The County Council claim it is not a problem as it is only in the centre of the road.

5. County Councillors report: County Councillor Martyn Holland reported that the 'Baton relay' event had been well attended. The Loggfest at Loggerheads had been somewhat spoiled by the bad weather - 16 stalls had been booked but only 3 turned up. The attic sale had been a good event due to the hard work of the volunteers. Councillor Holland wishes to remind everyone that all dogs in Wales MUST be micro chipped by 1st March 2015. In partnership with the Dog's Trust and Pollution and Public Health Department, Denbighshire County Council are holding sessions across Denbighshire to micro chip dogs for free. The usual cost by a vet is £30 £40. See Denbighshire's web site. With the installation of Fibre Optic cables, super fast broadband should be coming to the village (hopefully) by next year. 6. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting: The minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 8th May were signed as a true record. 7. Matters Arising: The e-mail address for News & Views is now news@llanferres.org Countryside Services at Loggerheads are enquiring about finance to create the overspill car park. The maintenance of the green at Maeshafn, by Green Thumb, was considered too expensive so the contract will be terminated. 8. Reports from other meetings: None at this time. 9. Maintenance in the Community: Quotes will be obtained to replace the chains on the swings in Maeshafn for when this becomes necessary. 10. Red Telephone Kiosk: Nothing to report on the kiosk in Tafarn-y-Gelyn. Countryside Services are considering a use for the kiosk in Maeshafn.

Badminton Club News JUNIORS Another enjoyable season which has seen a steady flow of new players of different ages and experience doubling our numbers on last year. Some newcomers who had never tried the sport before seem to be “hooked” and keen to continue building on new skills they developed; with one young lady impressing the coaches by her gutsy performance in our end of season tournament having only started the previous week!.. Well done Nell Williams! Existing members have markedly improved over the last season both with racket skills, footwork and have demonstrated improved tactical awareness, not least Sammy Harrison who made the Welsh satellite finals played in Welshpool in March, and was selected to train with the County squad. We were able to consistently put out teams in Flintshire Badminton League where our players were a credit to themselves and the club some playing their debut games, we saw many valiantly fought games and close encounters, some too close for comfort! Finishing the season in divison 3 an excellent achievement with so many players new to badminton. Special mention to

William Fellows for winning “All” his junior league singles matches this season. We also entered a team in the Gareth Coppack tournament. Our end of season handicapped tournament saw exciting and closely fought single games with Darcey Cole overcoming the impressive talent of Adam Griffiths to win gold with a determined Anna Fellows beating Ellie Lewis in the nail biting girls final. End of season awards were presented to each player for their commitment and improved skills with two special awards, one going to Dylan Chetcuti for fair Play and Ellie Griffiths as the most improved player...well done all.

We could also do with one more push along toy for toddlers. We are well supplied with other items as people have been very generous. New families are always welcome at the group – just turn up. A note from your County Councillor Summer has arrived but with it rain and more rain. Sadly this was the case again on the Saturday of the annual Loggfest. It is disappointing when so much effort has gone into organising an event that the weather once again let us down. Despite the weather those of us who attended on the Saturday still enjoyed the music, Morris Dancing and the few stalls that had braved the weather forecast. The beer was still good at the Loggerheads Inn and the cars were gleaming at the Loggerheads garage. The weather did improve and a great day was had by all on the Sunday. The attic sale at Llanferres Village hall was at least in the dry and our thanks should go to all those people who manned the stalls, made the cakes and served the tea and coffee.

more details of the Denbighshire offer check the counties web site The Commonwealth Baton events were a great success in the ward and congratulations must go to those members of our community who took part. Large numbers of people reached the top of Moel Famau and enjoyed the music while more people attended the final hand over at the Llandegla Mountain Bike Centre where we were joined by the Secretary of State for Wales David Jones. In the last addition I mentioned the rollout of Super-fast Broad Band in our area and I am pleased to report that according to the Super-fast Cymru Web Site the work on our up grade in Llanferres should start in September this year. If you would like to monitor the roll out you can visit the Superfast Cymru web site or if you would like to comment on the up grade visit Welsh Government website consultation section for the Superfast Cymru Infill Consultation which ends on July 3rd.

Once again there are those in the world who want to take advantage of a great sporting occasion and use it to make money illegally. Beware of the latest scam where you receive an official letter stating that you have won up to £750,000 on the Euro Millions FIFA World Cup Super Lottery. If you ring the number quoted you will be asked for your bank details to Best wishes, enable the criminals to credit your account Martyn with the winnings !! Remember you have to buy a ticket to win any prize in the National Lottery and this is just another scam. Did you know that in Wales, by March 15th next year, all dogs must be micro chipped. Denbighshire County Council in conjunction with the Dog Trust are organising free Micro Chipping sessions this month at various locations across the county. Micro Chipping normally costs between £30 and £40 at a local vets and for

Nature Notes I recently visited Cors Erddreiniog, a nature reserve in Anglesey, to look for the rare Marsh Fritillary(Eurodryas desfontainii) butterfly. The weather was cloudy with a fresh breeze and I was thinking it was a wasted journey but sun had been promised for later in the day, so I was looking around and came across the webs of Funnelweb spiders (as featured on the BBC Springwatch programme). More correctly they are Labyrinth spiders(Agelina labyrinthica). For most of the year these dull brown spiders go unnoticed but in early summer they make a web sheet and at the end is a funnel shaped retreat from which radiates a labyrinth of tunnels. Hidden at the centre is an egg sack in which the young spiders develop. The female spider remains with the young until they are ready to leave but sometimes she dies before the spiderlings are ready to go and in this case the young eat their mother. On seeing these tunnels some people go into a panic as they have heard of the deadly tunnel spiders of Australia but the British species are quite harmless. While looking at them, I became aware of a young toad making its way through the grass. The grass was very dense at ground level so the toad was about two inches up the grass, gripping stems with first one foot then the other and progressing rather like a monkey might do in the trees. It also reminded me of the way Bitterns travel through reeds, also featured on Springwatch. Eventually the sun did come out and so did the Marsh fritillaries, although the breeze remained fresh. In a way

this was helpful to me, for it caused the butterflies to fly only short distances before settling and were, therefore, fairly easy to follow and observe. It is only a small insect with a wingspan of about 30-40mm(1-1½ inches) but is very colourful with a chequered pattern of orange, brown and yellow. The caterpillars feed on wild species of Scabious, on which they construct a silk tent and later hibernate therein. They resume feeding in spring and then pupate in late April/early May to emerge as butterflies in late May/June. The population of the species fluctuates wildly but this year it seems to be doing quite well, as I saw about a dozen specimens. Nearer home I discovered a small colony of Small pearl-bordered fritillary(Boloria selene) butterflies where I have never seen them before. The species has disappeared from several local sites where I used to find them, often because of habitat destruction like tree planting, overgrazing, grass mowing etc but they have also gone from sites that have not been interfered with and the reason is not clear. It is a very scarce and endangered butterfly and it is pleasing to see it in this new location. Being a sedentary species, it has difficulty in moving to a new site if its habitat is degraded. Its name derives from the 'pearls' that run along the outside edge of the underside of the hindwing. Overwintering as a caterpillar, it is vulnerable to predation by birds and rodents especially if the grass is cut very short in the autumn. John Almond
