THANK YOU We would like to thank all our customers for their support and friendship over the past 22 and a bit years. A special thanks must go to the many young and older members of the community who have worked alongside us to make The Druid a great success. Thank you to all who marked our exit from The Druid with cards, gifts and most importantly kind wishes for the future. The end of an era but hopefully the start of a great future for both ourselves and The Druid Inn under the stewardship of Sam and Roy and their staff, to whom we extend our warmest wishes.
Thank you!! Jim, Julie and El.

Grave modifications A reminder that any modifications made to graves need to comply with the churchyard regulations. The full copy of the regulations are on the noticeboard just inside the church door. However, in summary, this includes no artificial flowers (except for Remembrance Day poppies), no shrubs, trees, gravel, chippings, paving stones, permanent flower containers, ornaments or kerbs around the edge. Please can people make sure that any modifications they have made are in keeping with this. Christian Aid Thanks to everyone who contributed to Christian Aid this year and a special thanks to the Druid Inn and Loggerheads Garage for displaying posters etc. We took the decision this year not to do a house to house collection, but instead to rely on collection tins. Unfortunately the collection tin at the back of church "disappeared" the same afternoon it was put out and there were very few donations. However, thanks to some very generous late contributions and a donation from the church we raised ÂŁ300, which although significantly down on last year was well worthwhile nonetheless. Thanks again to all who contributed. Organist We are really pleased that Huw Davies will be playing the organ in our Sunday Communion services, having been without an organist since Gwen was taken into hospital last Christmas. Log Book and Terrier Secretary We are still looking for a volunteer to keep the logbook and terrier up to date. The terrier is a record of the land owned by the church and the logbook is a record of all the alterations made to the church, its land and its contents. If

The Four Bridges Llanferres had four substantial stone built bridges in the past. Three spanned the River Alyn and the fourth a stream flowing down from the Clwydian Range to join the Alyn. Highways records survive from the mid-seventeenth century onwards and we can see that periodic severe flooding of the River Alyn necessitated much repair and rebuilding of two of the bridges. The bridge spanning the stream was known as Pont y Cacwn because of its wasp-shaped design. It was the site of several early motoring accidents in the early twentieth century and was rebuilt in 1928 as a result. It was finally demolished and replaced during the Llanferres and Tafarn y gelyn trunk road improvement scheme in 2001. A bridge was built adjacent to Llanferres Mill in 1816 in order to carry the public footpaths that were being diverted away from the Colomendy and Glan rafon Halls. The bridge was Listed by CADW as being of local importance. Unfortunately it was swept away in the great flood of 6th November 2000. The promise by the Highways Authority to rebuild it was never kept and it was replaced by the present wooden structure. The bridge at Loggerheads was originally known as Pont Rhyd y Gyfarthfa and derived its name from a local legend. It acquired its present name after the famous eighteenth century mineral dispute between the Grosvenor family and the Lords of Mold. It was rebuilt several times. For example in 1780 as it was not wide enough for carriages to cross and again in 1936 as it was unsuitable for modern traffic densities.
The earliest picture of this bridge is on a 1796 painting by John Ingleby. There are numerous picture postcards of Loggerheads from the early twentieth century which show this bridge before its final rebuilding. A two arched causeway type bridge was built at the north end of Cascade Wood (the Fairy Glen) in the nineteenth century to permit the carrying of waste, arising from the processing of lead ore, across the river. Nowadays it bears mainly foot traffic as a public footpath crosses it. This bridge was also Listed by CADW. It managed to withstand the flood of 2000 despite the flood water passing over the top of the bridge. The bridge has been neglected by successive owners and badly needs repointing. It is the only stone built bridge remaining in our community.

We, as a community, have helped out with the Mountain bike marathon over the last 10 years and have received donations for the upkeep and maintenance of our village playing field. I cannot thank you enough for this. Recently new swings and frames have been fitted in the park. Without your time and effort this event would not be able to take place. The organisers for the MTB marathon have been in talks with me over the last few months and had planned to ‘rest’ the Ruthin event this year. However, due to the positive response and feedback from many of the riders about the Ruthin event, they have decided to keep it in the calendar for 2016. This is brilliant news for our community and for the park. In the past the LPFRA have received a donation of £2000 for volunteering our time, a sum I’m not sure we get from any other fundraising event. The SCOTT UK mountain bike marathon - Ruthin will take place on the 10th – 11th September 2016. Please email crc_marshal@hotmail.co.uk Or call 810461. Thanks, Dan Hurst Chairman of the LPFRA

Calling all Bakers, Cooks and Jam Makers! Llanferres Old Peoples’ Welfare Committee Home Produce Stall Saturday 3rd September at Llanferres Gardening Club Show At this year’s Gardening Club Show we are once again having a home produce stall providing you with an opportunity to buy delicious cakes, bread, jams and chutneys and we would be very grateful for any donations for our stall. If you are entering the home section in the show and are rustling up 3 flapjacks, 3 muffins, 4 cupcakes or 6 welsh cakes, we would be very grateful for your ‘leftovers’ (or in fact any yummy offerings). Any donations can be dropped off at the Village Hall on the day. Alternatively we can arrange to pick up any goodies if you telephone 810697, 810867 or 810668. Llanferres Old Peoples’ Welfare Committee raises funds for and organises a Summer Outing and Christmas Lunch every year for our older residents. We need to raise in excess of £1500 each year in order to do this and so we hope you will support the Committee by donating or buying (or both!) Thank you
The domestic goddesses in the Llanferres Older People’s Welfare Committee now have 100s of jam jars ready to fill. We have more than enough and don’t need any more. Thank you so much for donating these. What we do need please are some yummy cakes, scones, bread or pies to sell at sell at our Produce Stall at the Gardening Show on Saturday 3rd September. Thank you Village Hall Booking Check the online calendar to see if the Hall is free at: www.llanferres.org then contact Gay Headley, 07836 268894 / 01352 810224 or preferably e-mail headley889@btinternet.com

A note from your County Councillor As many of you will know I have been pressing for two years or more for additional parking in Loggerheads after the Trunk Roads Agency placed double yellow lines on the A494 through the area. We all agreed that the double yellow lines were needed for safety reasons but I had hoped that alternative parking would have been provided before the lines were installed. Although long overdue plans have now been passed for an additional parking area behind the centre for up to seventy more cars. The project will include provision for a Reptile Hibernacula (a place for otters etc to rest overnight) in the woods surrounding the new car park. This is good news for people visiting the Country Park (including otters) and for the businesses who rely on those visitors for their livelihoods. With in excess of two hundred thousand visitors a year, Loggerheads Country Park is still one of Denbighshire's top tourist attractions. I am continually pressing BT for more information about their roll out of Super-fast broad band in our area and I have once again asked their Regional Manager for a copy of their schedule for all our local villages. I am concerned that parts of Wales will still not get this service and we need to know if this includes villages in our area so that we can look at alternatives for those communities. The good news is that residents in Maeshafn will be getting fibre optic
connections to their premises (FTTP). This will only be available if you register for Superfast broad band and are happy to pay for the upgrade. The planned road closure is part of this project and will enable BT to put new conduits in the road for the fibre optic cables and the new telegraph poles sprouting up around the village are to enable the cables to be connected to those properties that require the new service. Watch this space for further updates in due course. Once again I would like to thank to all those involved in the Meet and Mingle event held last month in the Village Hall. It was a great afternoon with lots of stalls, tea and scones. A lot of hard work went into making it a very successful afternoon. Finally I would like to just mention the New Community Shop in Llandegla that is now open for business. If you are walking in the area why not call in for a cup of tea and piece of cake in their cafe and visit the new visitor centre in St Teclas Church opposite. The visitor centre has some superb well designed information boards about the history of the area and I hope that in the future we can do something similar in both Llanferres and Llanarmon Churches. I hope that you all have a great summer and that the weather looks favourably on us all. Best wishes, Martyn

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ May I start with " thank you" for the numerous comments and phone calls regarding my first contribution to News & Views. As to follow John Almond was no mean feat.
a ground nesting bird they are vulnerable to a whole host of predators as well as farming practices and areas of farm land being used for leisure. The incubation period of their four eggs is between twenty five and twenty eight days, then the chicks are at their most vulnerable until their fluffy down is replaced by feathers. this takes between thirty five and forty days to enable them to fly out of danger. The parent birds will flutter on the ground as if injured to lure a predator away from eggs or young before flying off with the familiar "peewee" cry. Flocks will gather in large numbers in a "roost" on wet fields where they will tap their feet up and down in the same way as seagulls will to disturb and dislodge worms and insects. A long dry summer will quickly see them leave for more wet areas.
One good thing about writing this page, it "gets me out of the chair". I was recently taken to a good spot where we could see and hear yellowhammers. This was a familiar sound during my childhood on what was rural Wirral. The Wirral that I remember was lots of separate villages with fields and farms in between . The call of "a little bit of bread and no cheese" was known to everyone as the call of the yellowhammer, coming from the field margins and numerous hedgerows. Their well hidden nest of grass, lined with animal hair on the ground at the base of a hedge or bush. Unmistakeable in flight with the white edged black tail and their sharp high pitched call. With plenty of bird Since last months notes I have seen life we no longer see or hear like the the pied flycatcher although I don't corn-crake on long summer evenings know which of my many boxes they calling well into the night. One of will occupy. their last strongholds is in Ireland, where they are still common. I spent part of the winter in my shed repairing and making more bird boxes, Joni Mitchell had a hit record Big fortunately some have been occupied Yellow Taxi in which she sang "we straight away as a new box is strange don't know what we've got til it's gone" and the birds will have to become very true! These villages have spread accustomed to it. and become the urban sprawl we know today. More next month. I parked up recently to watch a peewit twirling and diving over a recently ploughed field, this once common bird is now very much in decline. The pee-wit, lapwing, green plover, call it what you like, is my joint favourite bird along with the songthrush. Being Copyright © July 2016 Eddie Wilde. All rights reserved.

What is a terrier? A terrier can be a dog but in the context of St Berres's church it means a record of land and property holdings. Terriers for the parish have been maintained for many generations and copies can be found in the Record Office in Ruthin dating back to 1630 in the case of a glebe terrier and to 1749 in the case of other terriers. The current terrier was compiled in 2000 and has been kept up to date since then. It forms part of a more comprehensive document called Log Book, Terrier and Inventory (hereafter referred to as Log Book). The contents are as can be imagined from the title and are not so very different from the records kept by many householders, namely records of work done to the church buildings, exterior works and items purchased. Unlike household records, the Log Book also contains photographs of the buildings
and its contents, historical information and articles of general interest such as the archaeological survey carried out in the glebe field prior to development. The number of additions and amendments to the document that are required each year is low, but that general rule is broken occasionally - the restoration works in 2000 is an example of an exception. The system which has been adopted is for the Churchwardens and the Treasurer to make a note when an addition or amendment to the Log Book is necessary and, on a periodic basis, pass on that information to a nominated person, namely the Log Book Secretary. The Secretary is then able to prepare and issue a comprehensive update to the year 2000 edition of the Log Book when it is an appropriate time to do so. Only two updates have been found necessary since 2000, the second of which has just been finalised. Now that the Log Book is up to date, I have asked the PCC of St Berres's Church to find someone to take over my duties as Log Book Secretary. That person need not attend the Church, but should be interested in the church's history, buildings and belongings. Basic computer and spreadsheet skills are necessary. I have found the job rewarding and have learnt a great deal from keeping the Log Book up to date; the church has an interesting history as have some of its possessions. So perhaps you would like to volunteer‌‌‌? Please see the separate advertisement. (Page 29)
