Welcome Welcome to the summer edition of News & Views. And this year it really does feel like we’re having a summer! This month we have an update from the successful local Badminton Club, which makes you realise that we have some excellent sporting talent in the community. And there’s clearly some burgeoning talent, sporting and creative, judging by the school report. See pages 22 and 23. In July the LOPWC will be cleaning windscreens at Loggerheads - so please try to support them and the garage - see page 5. And there’s a special event in August with no charge - see page 29. Don’t forget to work on your entries for the Garden Show, which is on 1st September this year. The next News & Views will be the September one, with a deadline of 20th August. Enjoy the sunshine and have a lovely summer. Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting on Monday June 11th had as guest speaker Anthony Norman of Conquest Plants, Bosley, Cheshire. They are specialist growers of hardy plants which have coloured foliage. His topic tonight was autumn and winter interest plants. He started with autumn, September - December and showed slides of the range of plants which can be grown to follow on from summer. These included bulbs such as Nerine, Amaryllis belladona and Colchium all to be grown against walls or under trees. He continued with a great range of shrubs and trees which had colourful foliage or fruit from their spring flowers. Mr. Norman continued with the months January to March with early flowering shrubs such as varieties of Mahonia, Euonymous, Daphne and also Cornus Kousa and Crab apple Red Sentinel - both with colourful fruit in the autumn As he showed his slides, perhaps 100 of them, he spoke of their needs, eventual size and spread for our guidance. The plants included here are but a small selection of his choice of plants to grow in autumn and winter. Our thanks to him for a most informative talk. Our next meeting will be on July 9th when Sarah Hughes, one of our Show Judges, will give guidance on "How to make the most of your exhibits'. As always, visitors will be most welcome at £1.00 per meeting and new members annual subscription £5.00. Further information from Mrs Joan Almond Hon Secretary ℡01352 810808
MEMORIAL STONE UPDATE You may have noticed that the old war memorial plaque is missing from its stone, having fallen off, probably due to the extreme weather conditions a few week ago. The plaque is largely undamaged and the opportunity will be taken to retouch the faded lettering before it is replaced.

There are also a number of major projects in the pipeline for 2018/19 including repairs to the bell tower, stained glass windows, boundary walls and hearse house. We urgently need more funding and are hoping that the community will help. A few years ago the Diocese launched a giving programme called Gift Aid Direct whereby a regular donation is given by individuals to the local church. The advantage of the system is the tax relief at 25% if the donor is a tax payer. This is collected and distributed centrally, relieving the individuals and the church gift aid secretary, of any additional paperwork. The Direct Debit can be cancelled at any time. In the next few weeks we will be delivering leaflets to households in the area - if you can spare a regular amount, no matter how small, please fill in and return the s.a.e. Please remember to note if you are a tax payer, and your church can also benefit from this vital income stream - thank you. Church bins After some initial improvements, regrettably, and despite clear notices, the church bins are still not being utilised correctly with wreaths, plastic wrappings and glass / ceramic grave ornaments being put in the green recycling bins, and conversely dead flowers in the black rubbish bins. The dangers of putting glass in green recycling are obvious.

something for everyone. You don’t have to be a serious gardener, something as simple as a single bloom could win you a prize.
We have made a number of changes to the show schedule this year as a result of the low number of entries in some sections in recent years but these can be reinstated in the future if there is a demand.
If gardening isn’t your thing, why not take some photographs or produce some handicrafts. New exhibitors are always welcome and it is free to enter.
Although some categories are restricted to Llanferres Parish residents or Garden Club members, the Photography, Floral Art, Home and Adult Handicraft sections are open to all. Hopefully, there is
If you are unsure about any of the categories, please ask a garden club member - we are always happy to help. In case anyone is wondering, entries in ‘The Carnival’ class in the photographic section must be of the Carnival held in Llanferres in May 2018.

LLANFERRES BADMINTON CLUB 2017/18 SEASON SUCCESS The 2017/18 season has been the club’s most successful season to date. With over 55 members both senior & junior, 3 senior teams, 2 junior teams and many individual achievements the club has continued in this its 20th year to offer competitive yet social badminton. The junior club continues to meet during the school terms on Thursday evenings from 6.30 – 7.30 at Ruthin Leisure Centre with coaching from qualified coaches Jane Givelin and Claire Halestrap and support from parents and other club members. more experienced players compete as teams in the North East Wales Junior League and in a range of tournaments, locally and further afield. 5 of our junior members are now part of the North East Wales County Squad. The senior club also meets on Thursdays between 7.30 & 9.30pm. This season the A team finished in 3rd position in Division 1, the highest finish in the club’s history. The B team finished 2nd in Division 3 and will be promoted to Division 2 for next season. The C team finished strongly in Division 3 and is ready to build on this for next season.

On 19th June, I represented Refugee Essentials at a meeting in Mold to launch a new community group called 'Synergy: working together to make Flintshire a place of Sanctuary'. Consisting of representatives from various organisations which support refugees across the county of Flintshire, this initiative supports the vision of Mold as a 'Town of Sanctuary', welcoming those fleeing violence and persecution in their own countries. Organisations attending the event were invited to sign a Pledge to support this vision for Mold. If you or your business are interested, Pledge forms are available from Mold's Salvation Army shop. Around 11,000 refugees have already been resettled in the UK, 400 of whom are living in Wales. Flintshire itself has committed to accommodate five refugee families each year until 2020 and Wrexham, Denbighshire and Conwy are also working towards similar goals under the national Syrian Resettlement Programme, supported locally by the Red Cross. In July and August, we will continue collecting summer clothing as per the list below. ‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ With the recent warm and clear days we've had, I have enjoyed watching the swifts high above the New Street Car Park in Mold. The most obvious nesting site is the large chapel which backs on to the car park. They also use a row of cottages on the other side of Wrexham Street, which offer dark and sheltered crevices to nest in. The swift is a complete master of the sky, a true aerial acrobat and will appear as if from nowhere, swooping and wheeling. Then suddenly they are gone, only to reappear much higher in the sky as they search for insects. With fixed wings they are capable of such unbelievable heights as ten thousand feet and can catch a nap whilst they soar and spiral with their huge mouths open to catch insects in their throat pouch. Once a young swift leaves its nest it may not land again for months or even years, as eating drinking and even mating takes place in the air, only landing to nest. All nesting material is collected in the air, the nest is just an untidy few pieces of hay and feathers.
leave for Africa as soon as they leave the nest and will be completely independent, unlike swallows which will be seen on phone wires with their parent swooping in feeding them for weeks before they take off for their long migratory flight . A builder told me he had found a nest containing four tiny dead young tucked under the eaves while he was doing a roof repair, fortunately he didn't want to touch them and left them where he found them as these were very likely to have been young swifts in a torpor state, which would have been revived when the parent birds returned with a throat pouch full of insects. There can be up to one thousand insects in the ball known as a bolus. During a poor summer the parent swifts might rear just one chick, as apart from food shortage, the chicks also carry a large parasite which takes a blood meal every few days, they can have up to thirty of these feeding off them, which weakens the young chick. So to be ready to undertake such a long journey just six weeks after hatching, life for a young swift is hard.
Since starting to write this page Springwatch has had a section on swifts and the importance of nesting sites as modern buildings don't have the access to roof space. Some building companies are encouraged to build - in nest sites. I hope Despite appearances swifts are not this will help the survival of such a related to swallows, being closer to remarkable bird. nightjars they have the same gaping mouth. The chicks will drop their temperature and go into a state of Eddie torpor, to be warmed and woken then fed Eddie Wilde 01352 810271 on the parents return. The swift is a long living bird and will return to the same nest site for up to twenty years. Two to four eggs are laid and will hatch after about nineteen days depending on weather conditions.
Young swifts will spend six weeks in the nest which is twice as long as swallows, this enables them to develop their strong wing feathers as they will

A note from your County Councillor What a fantastic start to the summer after such a long winter. Everyone’s gardens are looking good and on Saturday 23rd of June Llanarmon Yn Ial hosted another open gardens in the village with afternoon tea available in the Old School Room. I am pleased to start this months report with a number of good news items. I recently attended a photo shoot with the Clwydian Range Runners to celebrate the installation of the New Defibrillator at the Moel Famau Country Park toilets. Once again I would like to thank the Runners for their generous donation of £800 towards the installation costs and thank David Shiel Countryside Services and Tomos from the North Wales Ambulance Service for all their help and support in getting this project off the ground. Earlier this year I was asked by the Village Hall committee if I could arrange a meeting with the County’s Education Premises team to see if the County could help with the refurbishment of the Village Hall toilets. This was part of the committee’s plans to up date the hall for this year’s anniversary celebrations. The Committee had raised funds to modernise their kitchen but would have struggled to fund new toilets as well. Although it was a good meeting and the officer offered advice on how to obtain grants etc it did not look as if the County could finance the up grade the Committee was hoping for. We have now had some very good news. As part of the Schools modernisation programme the County’s Education Department plan to refurbish the toilets at the Llanferres site of Ysgol Bro Famau and they will upgrade the Village Hall toilets at
the same time. The work will be undertaken during the school holidays and this is excellent news for everyone. I know that the Village Hall Committee feel that by offering better facilities they will be able to let the hall more often thus helping to increase their income to sustain the Village Hall for many years to come. Further good news. As you all know BT announced last year that Superfast Broad Band had arrived in Tafarn Y Gelyn but after the initial take up many residents were told by BT that they were no longer in scope and that the service was not available to them. Sadly this was happening across the ward and it appeared that although new Superfast Broad Band cabinets had been installed in many communities Openreach had not allocated enough connections/ports in each cabinet to cover the demand for the new service. I asked the County’s Communications Officer who covers such things as Broad Band and telecommunications for the county to look into these cases and he has chased Openreach/BT with some success. I am pleased to say that many of those residents who were told they were out of scope have now been contacted by BT to say that they can now apply for the service. If you live in Tafarn Y Gelyn and would still like to up grade to Superfast Broad Band you should now contact your supplier. I have once again been spoken to my opposite number on Flintshire County Council about the poor state of the stretch of road from the old Youth Hostel in Maeshafn to the junction with the Eryrys/ Mold road. This small section of road is in Flintshire and sadly it is still not on Flintshire’s road repairs schedule for the coming year. I have thanked Kevin for his efforts but with a forty million pound repairs backlog in Flintshire it may be some time before this road is brought up to standard.

Local News In our ward the B5430 is being repaired and works including traffic lights and road closures will take place until the end of June. It is that time of year when parents need to apply for school transport for the 2018/19 school year. This is particularly important if your children are changing schools and you can download the forms from the County’s website or call customer services for a paper copy. Please apply as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment. The County has issued a warning about cold callers offering free replacement boilers, heating systems and loft insulation. It is always better to say no thank you on the door and contact the County Council or the CAB for advice on the current schemes available. In the next few months I hope to arrange a public meeting with the CAB to see what energy packages are on offer at the moment. Watch this space. Finally, I would just like to explain what my role is as your County Councillor when it comes to planning applications. When I joined the County Council as your representative I decided not to take a seat on the planning committee. As a member of the planning committee you are not supposed to prejudge any application before it is discussed at a formal planning committee meeting. When it came to controversial planning applications in our ward such as major housing developments, quarry extensions, etc, I wanted to be able to speak on behalf of the ward’s residents when and as required. If a planning application may have an impact on you or you property the County’s Planning Department will contact you by post and you will be able to view the full planning application on the County’s
planning website using the reference number quoted in the letter. If any resident has a concern about a planning application I am more than happy to come out to see them, discuss their concerns and give guidance about the planning process. If I believe that your concerns are justified I am more than happy to then speak on your behalf at the planning committee or raise your concerns with the relevant planning officer. All County Councillors can attend planning meetings and speak on planning applications in their ward but we can not vote unless we are a member of the committee. Because there are so many domestic planning applications across the ward I will not be knocking on your door unless you have asked me to call. I would like to reassure everyone that if there is an application that I or the Community Council have concerns about I will contact the residents affected and where necessary even call a public meeting if I feel it is appropriate to do so. I hope that our summer continues to be a good one and that you all have trouble free summer holidays. Best wishes, Martyn 01824 780703 martyn.holland@denbighshire.gov.uk

Swallow Holes along the River Alyn In last month's article I explained that The Leete watercourse was designed to provide a continuous supply of water by extracting water upstream of the known swallow holes or river bed fissures. The Halkyn United District Mining Company who developed the lead mines in north east Wales during the 1920s and 1930s encountered problems with water leaking into their underground workings. During the rainy season their underground railway tracks were covered in up to 0.6m (2 feet) of water. This made movement of the mined lead ore, mining materials and men very difficult. From about 1931 onwards the Company conducted a series of investigations to identify the source of this water. This involved introducing dyes into the flowing river to identify the more important fissures in the River Alyn river bed as this was the source of the water. Various solutions to the problem of excluding water from the workings were considered. These include canalizing stretches of the river, re-opening and enlarging The Leete, piping the flow over bad stretches, and lastly, tunneling from Loggerheads to below Gwernymynydd in order to divert the whole river away from the Loggerheads to Rhydymwyn section. All these proposals were rejected on the grounds of cost. An alternative, and potentially cheaper, solution was adopted. It was decided to seal the fissures once they had been located. The river was dammed off in sections so that one set of fissures could be treated at a time. Once identified the fissures were sealed with
concrete or bags of soil. This was by no means entirely effective as new fissures often opened up near fissures that had just been sealed. It was then decided to deposit about 3,800 cubic metres (5,000 cubic yards) of ashes of various grades into the river. It was hoped that they would be sucked into the remaining active fissures and that they would seal them. Although this measure had an immediate result there was no significant long term improvement. The river bed near the Glan Alyn waterwheel pit (within today's Loggerheads Country Park) was particularly leaky and a concrete wall was built along the west bank to direct the river away from major fissures here. Despite the unsuccessful outcomes of the attempts to seal the river there was at least one positive result. A bronze horse harness ring was discovered at a depth of 2.4m (8 feet) during the excavations in the river bed gravels near the Glan Alyn waterwheel pit. The cast ring was 28mm (1.1 inches) in diameter, with a plain inner surface and the outer surface divided by a groove into two parallel mouldings. It was probably made during the first century AD. The Mining Company presented the ring to the British Museum.
