Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club On Monday May 13th, a party of 16 Club members went to Walton Fuchsia Nursery in Lymm. This trip was booked in September of last year and the winter weather had created great problems for owners Roy and Lesley Walton, for they had lost so many stock plants. A wander round two thirds of an acre of a commercial greenhouse brought home to us the size of the problem compared to our small home greenhouses. But their hard work and dedication had provided a wide range of their normal 1,600 varieties for us to buy. Roy answered many queries about growing fuchsias - feed, compost and varieties. After refreshments of tea and cake, kindly provided by our hosts, a quick 45 minute trip brought us home. Perhaps this was a reality trip to a commercial grower's nursery, compared to a manicured garden centre for plants. Our next meeting, which will be on Monday June 10th, should have been a talk by Carol Madden but unfortunately Carol is unwell and cannot come. However, at short notice, we have been able to secure the services of Kevin Bailey who will give a talk entitled 'Hostas and Ferns'. Visitors and new members will be very welcome. Tagliatelle with Asparagus, Cherry Tomatoes, Herb Oil and Parmesan To serve 2 Bunch of asparagus 12 cherry tomatoes 250g tagliatelle 2 tbls olive oil small bunch herbs ( eg chives, basil, parsley) 50g Parmesan cheese Prepare the asparagus by cutting off and discarding the woody ends. Neatly cut the remaining stalks at the diagonal. Keep the tips and stalks separate. Cook the pasta according to pack instructions. Roast or lightly grill the tomatoes until just starting to soften. Blitz the herbs with the oil in a blender. (you can make extra and keep for other dishes/salads) Cook the asparagus stalks in boiling water for about 4-5 mins until just tender. Add the tips for a further minute. Add the drained pasta to bowls, sprinkle over the tomatoes and asparagus, drizzle with the herb oil and add parmesan shavings. Moel Famau Jubilee Tower update It has been two months since the original press release, and if you haven’t seen the works to date, there has been huge progress at the summit of Moel Famau. However, with snow for three weeks combined with some pretty tough weather, this work has been delayed somewhat. On a more positive note, some amazing finds have been uncovered. Very little work has been undertaken on the summit since 1969, most of which was done to stabilise the structure following gradual deterioration from the 1860s onwards. Before starting on site we knew that we were in uncharted territory, with no historic plans available and only a couple of historic photos of the existing tower. Initial excavations were carried out (and to the eagle eyed, temporary timber fence posts were installed at the summit) to investigate the state of the original bastion wall (Bastion - an element built at an angle to the main structure

Moel Famau Jubilee Tower update to ensure structural stability). The intention was, and still is, to reveal the existing bastion (which has stood for the majority of its time under approximately 5m of ground) and to allow easier access to the top level of the Jubilee Tower. Following the commencement of works by Grosvenor Construction, the first big surprise after only a couple of days working was to find that the inside of the bastion was circular, instead the anticipated square or unshaped. This discovery resulted in full re-design of the proposed internal stair within the bastion to ensure that all archaeology and finds were preserved for future generations to enjoy. As further excavations took place it became apparent that this circular core continued to the original ground level. The intention had been to break into one edge of the bastion to allow access into and up onto the tower’s platform level. However, as works progressed, excavations revealed a previously unknown opening. This was not only a bonus, as it did not require any breaking through; it raised the questions of why was there an opening there at all? Also, was there originally a staircase within the bastion? Original photographs showing staggered windows suggest that this was the case, but the blocking up of the entrances externally (before the collapse of the tower) suggest otherwise. Perhaps the opening was only intended as an opening for construction purposes‌.. This brings us up to date with the discovery works to the end of May, with some construction work still to be carried out. Thursday the 16th May saw Ysgol Bro Famau having a guided tour around the Jubilee Tower by members of the Denbighshire Country Service team. What will be found next and how will these discoveries alter future plans? We anticipate completing the works, with the bastion fully exposed and accessible to the public by the beginning of August. These archaeological investigations and improved accessibility to the Jubilee Tower were commissioned by Denbighshire County Council and Flintshire County Council and funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Men of Llanferres in the Great War Private John William Cordiner 36700 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment John was born in Llanferres in 1895, the youngest son of John Matthew and Catherine Cordiner (née Kerr - born in Ireland) He had an elder brother, two elder and two younger sisters residing at Rhos Farm, the family later living at Ty-Fy-Nain on Forestry Road. John enlisted in the village in early 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion after basic training as a draft replacement (the Cheshires had been fighting in France since August 1914) The first battle of the Somme started on July 1st 1916 after an eight day, largely ineffective, bombardment of the German positions with over 1.7 million shells of various calibres fired over a 30 kilometre front, and the explosion of 10 huge underground mines under the opposing trenches. The attack at 7.30am, in broad daylight, was a disaster with a scarcely credible 57,470 casualties on the first day, including 19,240 killed, most of those in the first few hours, and remains the blackest day ever for the British army. The Cheshires were involved from the end of July at both the infamous High Wood and Delville (Devil’s) Wood before going into reserve; and at the end of August were ordered to relieve the 14th Royal Warwicks, and moved to Chimpanzee Trench near Hardecourt, in preparation for an attack on Falfemont farm (battle of Guillemont) planned for the 3rd September. They were shelled heavily with lachrymatory gas (a severe often fatal form of tear gas) throughout the 31st but the relief was completed by 2.30am, the trenches being very difficult to locate in the dark and under extreme conditions, the orderly also having lost his way. Early morning around 6.30am four German soldiers (one wounded) wandered into “A” Company’s advanced trenches and were captured. Chimpanzee trench (date unknown) It was later that morning, probably before 10.00am that John was killed, aged just 21. The regimental diary states “casualties during the day were not very heavy, but amounted to about 23 other ranks” tragically, some of those from “shorts” of 75mm shells from a nearby French gun battery. John was one of 6 killed in action that day, also one officer and one other ordinary rank dying later of wounds received. The subsequent attack on the farm was driven back on the 3rd but objectives finally taken the following afternoon and the battalion withdrawn with an “estimated 460 casualties”-

Men of Llanferres in the Great War more than half of the diminished battalion number, and of which, only 300, all ranks fighting strength, were at roll call on the 6th at Citadel camp (now a cemetery) after relief by the Royal Irish Fusiliers. John is buried in Quarry Cemetery (Mountauban), then an advanced dressing station, with 583 other known ranks, posthumously awarded the Victory Medal and British War medal (known colloquially as “Mutt and Jeff”) He is also commemorated on his parent’s grave in Llanferres churchyard with the poignant wording “He did his duty faithfully”

Toddler Group for Llanferres There seem to be about four or five Mums and toddlers who have displayed an interest in meeting together in the Village Hall one morning a week during term time and Head Mistress, Mrs Turner, is supportive. I shall have more details in time for the July magazine but in the meantime I would be really grateful if all those who have spoken to me would email me with their email address so that I can keep them up to date with progress. Also please let me know which morning or mornings would suit you best. I suggest the time is for 2 hours from 9.30 to 11.30 am and hopefully the cost per Mum could be kept to £1.50 per morning to include refreshments. COMPETITION VICTORY Llanferres Short Mat Bowls Club Competing in the Clwyd League competition of twelve local villages, on Tuesday 14th May, Llanferres claimed a decisive victory in the final of the ‘twelve-aside’ doubles competition, beating Llandrillo 9½ to 2½ in a keenly fought, but friendly, match and our gold winner’s medals were worn with pride. After the match members of both teams socialised, with generous refreshments and a Raffle. Llanferres also competed in the ‘nine-a-side’ singles competition where we reached the semi-final but were narrowly beaten by Llannefydd. This was a very satisfying victory as, being only a small club, we sometimes struggle to find sufficient players to make up a team. We need new members, so why not come along to the Village Hall on Tuesday evenings at 7pm and try your hand at this, not too energetic, sport. We are a friendly bunch, you will be most welcome and you do not need any equipment.

Nature Notes Despite the terrible weather this year, spring has arrived but many early flowering plants are late and are having to compete with normally later flowering species. And have you noticed the profusion of a small flowering plant with pale lilac or white flowers long the edges of many roads? This is Early Scurvy-grass, often called Danish Scurvy-grass because its scientific name is Cochlearia danica. Normally a plant of the salt marsh, it flourishes on road edges because the de-icing of the roads in winter has created a mini salt marsh along the verge. Summer migrant birds have arrived but in varying amounts. Chiffchaffs and Willow warblers are in good numbers, I have seen more Pied flycatchers than I saw last year and Blackcaps and Redstarts would appear to be in normal numbers but I have not yet seen or heard a Wood warbler. However, from my own observations I would say Swallows and House martins are well down but they may still arrive if we have an improvement in the weather. I have been pleased to hear and see Cuckoos, not here in Llanferres but locally. I was fortunate to see two male Cuckoos in dispute. One was perched atop a small tree when it was attacked by another which drove it off and stole the perch. The first bird flew to another tree but the moment it started to 'cuckoo' it was again attacked by the second bird and they flew into the air where they engaged in vigorous combat until one flew away. The winner then resumed its perch but when it 'cuckooed' the other returned and attacked it. They then fought in the air but went out of sight so I was not able
to see the final result. I have never seen that before. On a visit to Walney Island, off the Cumbrian coast, in late April, I was interested to see a small flock of geese which I did not recognise as a native species. They were Emperor geese which have escaped from a wildlife collection and taken up residence on Walney. Perhaps more intriguing, one seemed to have paired up with a Barnacle goose. By this time the Barnacle should have returned to its Greenland breeding site. Is it a bird which is unfit to make the long migration flight or did it stay 'just for love'? Many years ago I witnessed a female Barnacle goose which had paired with a male Aylesbury duck on a site in Yorkshire. Eggs were laid but were stolen before they could hatch, so whether they were fertile or not was never established. Butterflies would seem to be having a difficult start to the season. So far, I have seen very few of those that usually emerge from hibernation or have overwintered as pupae. Perhaps they are waiting for a spell of more clement weather. I notice that there is considerably less Water crowfoot in the river this year. Usually by now the river bottom is carpeted with this plant but I suspect it has been scoured out by the frequent spates experienced last winter. Its scarcity could have a detrimental impact on the invertebrate life and, consequently, the birds of the river.

News A Welsh Memorial in Flanders An Urgent Appeal for Help! Peter Jones, the coordinator of this campaign recently visited Belgium and met with the Mayor of Langemark which is the administrative centre for the areas of Paschendaele, Boezinge, and Pilkem. These places are where the 3rd. battle of Ypres took place, commonly known as the battle of Paschendaele. It was here the 38th. Welsh division fought and suffered terrible losses . Two revered poets were killed, Francis Ledwich from Ireland and our own " HEDD WYN "( Ellis Humphrey Evans ). The story of Hedd Wyn and " Y Gadair Ddu ", the black chair has passed into legend The Mayor informed Peter that a parcel of land has been donated very close to where Hedd Wyn died in 1917. The Belgian local authority is to convert the parcel of land into a landscaped Welsh garden of remembrance. There will be off road parking and a coach drop off area. The local council out there is to provide for this at a cost of 40,000 EUROS. On his return to Wales Peter visited the "Graig yr Hesg" quarry in Pontypridd which quarries an excellent blue pennant hard stone, ideal for building the memorial in the shape of a Cromlech. The managers are to donate the stone. It therefore leaves the campaign with the job of transporting the stones to Belgium, obtaining a large metal Dragon and paying the Belgian Engineers to build the Cromlech. Funds are still being sought for this. To support this campaign please contact Peter Jones on 07974044960 or E.mail p.carterjay@gmail.com Cheques should be made payable to : The Welsh Memorial in Flanders Campaign and sent to c/o Peter Jones,117 Heol Tawe, Abercrave, Swansea, SA9 1XR.
