Llanferres Over 60's Club LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At our May meeting we had a moving talk about the non-public face of the Royal British Legion. The welfare of ex-members of our armed forces after their service, whether abroad or at home, is so demanding. Personal, financial or medical problems are all dealt with on a daily basis. Our meeting on June 10th will be more light-hearted. While we enjoy a strawberry tea we will hear members' readings of their favourite poems or passages of prose. Why not join us? Gardening Club News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club On Monday May 12th we should have visited Saith Ffynnon Farm - the home of Jan Miller, North Wales Butterfly Conservation Officer. But due to the previous 4-5 days of heavy rain and with the forecast for more on the Monday, this visit was postponed. A false hope for May 19th was also postponed and now we will go on Monday June 2nd - arrangements as before. David Lock our speaker for Monday June 9th has unfortunately had to cancel his talk, so, at short notice. I have booked Kevin Bailey to give a talk entitled ' Composting and Growing Organic Vegetables'. Visitors (ÂŁ1 per meeting) and new members (ÂŁ5 per year) will be most welcome. Best wishes

The Community Council strongly oppose this application. Reasons - detract from the essential appearance of the wood; amount of work to be carried out does not warrant a shed; there were concerns about proliferation of such buildings; it is within the AONB; such a structure would not be allowed in open country in a green belt; the area is covered by a National Trust Covenant; many local people had expressed concerns and opposition to such developments in the woodland. 21/2014/0407 Proposal: Replacement of timber fence on south-east boundary with a stone wall. Location: Tyn yr Ynn Farm, Maeshafn. It was resolved to raise no objection. 21/2014/0424 Proposal: Erection of single -storey pitched-roof extension to rear of dwelling. Church News Services in June 1st 8th 15th 22nd 29th
9.30 am Sunday Worship 9.30 am Sunday Worship 9.30 am Holy Communion 9.30 am Sunday Worship Group Service 10.30 am at St Mary, Cilcain
In Loving Memory Services We shall once again be holding these services in two of our churches in the grouping: on Monday 16th June at 7.00pm in Gwernaffield and on Wednesday 18th June at 7.00 in Cilcain. There will be folders in our churches for people to enter names of their loved ones if they wish these names to be read out and prayed for, whether or not you are attending the service. There will also be hymns, readings and an opportunity to light a candle. Sponsored Walk Last year the Church organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for the church and for the Mold Hospital X-Ray Machine. We raised over £1000 and gave approximately half to the appeal. We are planning to do the same walk again on Saturday 13th September at 10.00 am starting from the Druid. This time we shall give a donation to News and Views as we feel that this is a very worthwhile cause in our community. The walk is only 2 hours long and takes place around the village. We start from the Druid, go up to Maeshafn woods, down to Fairy Glen, cross the main road, along Forestry Road, through Fron Hen Farm and return down Rectory Lane to the Druid. Inevitably some of us slaked our thirst there! Chefto Armstrong demonstrates his skills We do hope to be joined by many others this year show their appreciation of the work that Paul and Siobhan do to keep us all connected and informed. Sponsorship forms are available from the News and Views website www.llanferres.org or by emailing Daryl on daryl.austin4@gmail.com The church benefits greatly if you are able to gift aid - please follow the instructions on the form. Full details of the walk are on the reverse. Christian Aid Collections The amount raised in Llanferres was £388.62 plus a Cafod charity cheque. Out of this amount £160.60 was gift aided so that Christian Aid will be able to re-claim £40.15 in tax. Thank you so much to those who tramped the roads and to those who gave so generously to such a good cause.’

Llanferres in the Great War Thank you to everyone for reading my articles, and all the positive feedback I have received. Above all, my thanks to all the later generations and relatives of soldiers killed who have assisted my research with their personal family histories. I am aware that some of the details of the soldiers' individual stories were limited, and occasionally speculative, but hopefully as thorough and logical as what records exist these days, permit.
I have found very little unfortunately about Private Benjamin Peters killed in mid October 1918 near Cambrai - the scene of a major engagement in the first month of the war when the retreating BEF stood and fought a one day set piece battle under General Smith-Dorrien

Local News Local lads show a fine “Turner speed” George and Charlie Turner surprised fellow runners at the Loggerheads Trail 5K this year. George finished an excellent 12th overall and was fourth junior home, and Charlie finished in overall second place and was the first junior with a great time of 28 mins 50 seconds, beating all adult runners but one! Dad didn't do so bad either finishing a very creditable 15th of the forty one runners on what was described as a very tough course. So very well done to all three.

Local News the Queen’s Baton Relay As you may or may not be aware, amongst others from Denbighshire, I have been nominated to carry the baton in the Queens Baton Relay for the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow. My nomination is in recognition for the fund raising and volunteer work I do towards the children's playing park in Llanferres and my efforts towards the Ruthin MTB event. At first I wasn't sure about carrying the baton, but having had a think about it, I would be actually carrying it to represent all the people that help and have helped me to do the things that I do - the volunteers , the marshals, the land owners, the organisers, the working party groups, the park fund raising events to name just a few. So, on Friday 30th May I will 'run' the baton off the top of Moel Famau and down to the top car park, along the main foot path. It will be an honour for me to carry the baton, on behalf of everyone that has joined in and helped over the years and I hope that you can make it and come along on the day. Best Wishes, Dan Hurst LPFRA

A note from your County Councillor Once again our area will be centre stage because on the 30th May the Commonwealth Baton will be carried to the top of Moel Famau with a number of local people taking part in the event. The baton will arrive on horse back at about 1.00pm and will then be carried to the summit by a relay of walkers. Fell runners will then take it back down and it will then leave for Ruthin at about 3.00pm. If you can make it to the summit you will be greeted by a live band, so let's hope that the weather is kind to us all that day.

Hopefully our broad band will start to be up graded to super-fast broad band from December 2014 onwards with the installation of new fibre optic cable cabins in the area. Once rolled out customers will be able to apply to be up graded and this roll out should be completed by the end of 2015. Martyn The county council has now started the budget process for next year and the signs from Welsh Government are not good. We believe that we will be asked to cut our budgets by between six and eight million pounds each year for the next two years as pressure is put on the Welsh Government to put more funds into the Welsh NHS. As serious savings have already been made, our next review may have to consider stopping some services all together and in some cases transferring them to town and community councils. Calling new foster carers in Denbighshire A campaign aimed at attracting more foster carers for children and young people has been launched by Denbighshire County Council.
their families and friends. This can mean anything from one night to a number of years or permanent, depending on the children's needs.
The 'Love Fostering' campaign is a multi-media campaign that includes a new information website, promotional banners and booklets. The campaign aims to increase the number of applications and enquiries received about fostering in the county and to promote the benefits of fostering county-wide.
"Fostering can involve looking after children of all ages, from babies, teenagers to young adults. People can choose what age range of children they are able to support and they are able to change which type of fostering they offer to children as their own circumstances change or their skills and confidence increase.
Staff from the Council's Fostering team will also be out and about in events around the county over the coming months, promoting the benefits of fostering and encourage people to consider making a difference to the life of a child or children in Denbighshire.
"We have some great examples of people in Denbighshire that have fostered children and they have made an enormous difference to that child's life. It can be extremely rewarding for both foster carers and the children and we will provide support and guidance every step of the way."
There are a number of differing types of fostering including general fostering (short and long term), respite care to allow other carers to take a break from their duties , short break care to support families who have children with disabilities, support care to enable families to overcome difficult periods in their lives and emergency foster care that can see children placed at very "Foster carers in Denbighshire are short notice. asked to provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment, either short or To find out more, please visit long term. while helping children and www.lovefostering.co.uk or call 0800 young people to keep in contact with 7313215. Councillor Bobby Feeley, Cabinet Lead Member for Social Care, Adult and Children's Services, said: "Fostering is a way of offering children and young people a home, someone to care for them while their own family are unable to look after them, This can be for a variety of reasons, including neglect, illness or family breakdown.

Nature Notes This has been an odd year for summer bird migrants. Some of the early arrivers such as Chiffchaffs and Wheatears came in several days earlier than usual but later species were well behind schedule. House martins were so late that I began to despair for them ever coming. An occasional bird was observed and there was a record of one nesting in Scotland as early as the second week of April but here they were virtually non-existent. Then on the 14th May the sky suddenly seemed full of them. It would seem that the first birds to leave Africa had a good passage but later ones encountered bad weather in southern Europe and were held up. Now that they have arrived, the question is whether they will have enough time to raise two broods and, if not, will it have a detrimental effect on future populations. Wood warblers and Pied flycatchers were also late and it is probable that they were delayed by the same bad weather but are now here. Two of our rare local butterflies would seem to have had a good winter. The Pearl-bordered fritillary, which is rare throughout Britain and classed as an endangered species, has a stronghold at Eyarth Rocks near Ruthin and when I visited on the 16th May I was pleased to see them in greater numbers than I have ever seen them before. This species spends the winter as a caterpillar hiding under the canopy of dead Bracken and has obviously benefitted from the mild winter. On the following day I was at Llanymynech where I observed the Grizzled skipper, another endangered species.
This is one of our smallest native species and difficult to see, as it flies very fast close to the ground, and its chequer-board pattern of black and white acts as excellent camouflage. However, after a time one gets 'one's eye in' and is able to spot them and quickly distinguish them from the (slightly larger, marginally more common and dark brown) Dingy skipper. The Grizzled skipper spends the winter as a pupa but it also seems to have fared well as there were plenty about. A fifteen millimetre long, slender fly landing on our window attracted attention. I immediately thought it to be one of the Ichneumon flies, except that it did not have the very slender waist typical of this genera. However, reference to the insect book established that it was an Ichneumon with the impressive name of Diplazon laetatorius. It is black in colour, very slender with long antennae and long, dangly yellow legs and a yellow spot on the thorax. All Ichneumons are endoparasitic, that is they live for part of their lives inside other insects. This species lays its eggs inside the larvae of Hover-flies where they hatch and feed on the Hover fly larvae but only finally kill it before it can pupate. Because Hover-flies predate Aphids and D. Laetatorius predates Hover-flies, the ichneumon could be regarded as an agricultural pest but I think this is marginal.
