Welcome Welcome to the June edition of Llanferres News & Views. Firstly, thank you to Christine Moore for this month’s lovely front page picture taken down at Fairy Glen. May proved to be an historic month in recent Llanferres history as Jim & July left the Druid Inn (see page 9). It will be strange not to see them behind the bar after so many successful years. Welcome to the new team who have taken over. Our thanks to Eddie Wilde who has kindly volunteered to write our nature watch section, after John Almond’s 20 year stint!. See page 31. Eddie says you won’t get the technical Latin names for the local flora and fauna from him, but he is happy to share his observations each month in his own style.
This month we have the chance to win two tickets to Taking Flight Theatre’s production at Loggerheads in June. If you haven’t been to one of their performances we’d thoroughly recommend them as they are great entertainment. See page 17 for more details. It’s also Loggfest this month of course on 3rd to 5th June, always a great local event. We were overwhelmed by and very grateful for the many offers to help distribute the magazine. Watch out for your new delivery ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ in Pant Ddu, Maeshafn and Llanferres. Paul & Siobhan Tel: (01352) 810668 Email: news@llanferres.org www.llanferres.org

5 News & Views LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At our May meeting Mr Graham Thomas described what great lengths some folk went to in order to Fake our Silverware. He did assure us that this didn’t happen very often! Plans were made for an Outing To Beaumaris and The Secret Garden in September. We also discussed a possible outing in August. This will be arranged at the June meeting. Our June Meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th at 2.oopm when members will take part in a Poetry and Readings afternoon organised by Pat Armstrong, followed by a Strawberry Cream Tea. This should be fun. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Baby and Toddler Group 9.15 to 11.15am every Tuesday during term time. ÂŁ1 including a drink and biscuits. We encourage parents and grandparents of babies and toddlers to come along. It is a good way for the children to have a play while getting to know those they may start school with and also to meet other local parents.

8 News & Views SHARE - Supporting Homeless, Assisting Refugees Everywhere At the beginning of May, SHARE hosted a very successful opening event at our new headquarters at the Old County Library Building, County Hall, Mold. We’re now situated between Theatre Clwyd and the Law Courts – just look out for the big red sign! We enjoyed live music from local band members Al and Abi of MonstaBall, the children had lots of activities to enjoy and our first SHARE HQ Jumble Sale earned some much needed cash which will be used to support our work. Many local people are now coming forward to help us – a number of local churches deliver a regular collection of pre-loved clothing to SHARE and local independent businesses are fundraising for us or helping us out by supplying goods or services that help to cover our overheads and mean that all money raised can be used to support those most in need. Mold Flower Club have recently nominated SHARE as their ‘Charity of the Year’ and many other local organisations & schools have come to visit us at HQ and then volunteered their time to help us sort, pack and despatch all the donations that we have received.

You can be assured of a warm welcome, a huge smile and lots of tea, coffee and biscuits to keep you going. Lots of new friendships and connections can be made at SHARE, so why not pop down to see us sometime?

The Aberduna Engine House Lead mines in north Wales were often subjected to flooding as they were deepened. Large steam engines, housed in stone built engine houses, were used to dry out mines by pumping the water to surface. During the nineteenth century there were six engine houses within our parish. Four in Maeshafn, one at Pant du and one near the S-bend in the road to Maeshafn from Gwernymynydd. Only the latter one remains to remind us of the lead mining industry that provided employment for many men and boys in our parish. The Aberduna Engine House was built to a standard Cornish design and contained a steam engine with a 36 inch diameter cylinder. It has been Listed by CADW as being of historic importance and deserving protection. There are now only a handful of engine houses left in north east Wales: three of which are within the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB. Mining had started near Aberduna in 1757. It was claimed that the mine was very productive in the early days but no records survive to confirm this. The steam engine was installed sometime between 1840 and 1850 when water ingress became a problem as the mine was driven deeper. It was in almost continuous operation between 1872 and 1884 during the most active period in the mine's history. The mine finally closed in 1884. The mine was not very productive during that period despite substantial investment and ran at a financial loss. The shareholders received no dividends and the directors of the company no reimbursement of their expenses. The quarrying firm Hanson worked the adjacent limestone quarry up to December 2012. The wing walls of the
engine house, adjacent to the main mine shaft, were in an unsafe condition by then. In order to prevent them from collapsing during the last phase of quarry working Hanson commissioned consolidation work on the building. This involved pinning parts of the building with steel anchors, replacing some wooden lintels and re-pointing part of the building. Although further re-pointing needs to be done the building is now apparently sound. The building has special local significance for the following reason. The Maes y safn lead mine under Maeshafn village closed suddenly in 1871 throwing several hundred men out of work. The re-opening of the Aberduna mine in 1872 provided employment for about forty of these men. This is particularly significant because the First Great Depression of 1873-96 had a disastrous effect on lead and coal mining as well as on agriculture. This led to many workers in the district becoming destitute.

We, as a community, have helped out with the Mountain bike marathon over the last 10 years and have received donations for the upkeep and maintenance of our village playing field. I cannot thank you enough for this. Recently new swings and frames have been fitted in the park. Without your time and effort this event would not be able to take place. The organisers for the MTB marathon have been in talks with me over the last few months and had planned to ‘rest’ the Ruthin event this year. However, due to the positive response and feedback from many of the riders about the Ruthin event, they have decided to keep it in the calendar for 2016. This is brilliant news for our community and for the park. In the past the LPFRA have received a donation of £2000 for volunteering our time, a sum I’m not sure we get from any other fundraising event. The SCOTT UK mountain bike marathon - Ruthin will take place on the 10th – 11th September 2016. Please email crc_marshal@hotmail.co.uk Or call 810461. Thanks, Dan Hurst Chairman of the LPFRA

A note from your County Councillor Summer has arrived at last but every time it rains there is still a drop in temperature. The good news is that this has not stopped the county from completing some road resurfacing across the ward. The section of the B5430 from the A494 to Valley Lodge has been tarred and chipped as has a section of the Graianrhyd to Eryrys road and the A525 from the Plough to the Crown Inn. The village road in Llandegla has been completely resurfaced with traffic cushions and a new 20 mph limit installed. BT will be completing work in and around Maeshafn in July and the road from Llanferres to Maeshafn will be closed from July 4th to July 7th. Local residents will receive further information in due course. Work has also started on repairing the bridge into Llanarmon Yn Ial. The new bus timetables and service seem to have settled down but if anyone is still encountering problems please let me know. At the last Community Council meeting a Maeshafn resident raised a concern about the poor state of the green triangle at the top of the village. It appears that county council staff deposited road salt there last winter and this has killed the grass. I have contacted highways and asked them to look into the matter with a view to reinstating the grass.
I have recently returned from a weeks family holiday in Cornwall and it was interesting to note that the majority of rural villages in Cornwall have large signs on their Green BT Cabinets saying that Super-fast Broad Band had arrived. Sadly we are still waiting for the same signs to appear on the majority of our Green Cabinets. As you know BT have agreed to come to another public meeting in the ward after they pulled out of the last one. I will let you know where and when that is as soon as I have a date. We are now in the last twelve months of this council and all authorities across Wales ( counties and communities) are waiting to see what the Welsh Government have in store for us when it comes to budgets and possible reorganisation. The fact that the Labour Government is now a minority Government may temper their previous polices. The next few months should be interesting. Best wishes, Martyn

These drawings are by the Rev. Owen Thomas, who was rector of Llanferres between 1953 and 1965. The picture above was drawn to commemorate 200 years of Llanferres School in 1963. The 3 children outside the school are his children Andrew, Frances and Roland. With grateful thanks to Hilary Jones (nee Wayman) who supplied the pictures.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ Some of you will remember my contributions to the MADRA Newsletter "A Walk on the Wild Side". Although not as mobile as I would like to be, I can still watch wildlife from my parked car. It acts like a "hide" and birds and animals approach without fear. Spring is always a good time to watch hares, especially in the Broughton and Hawarden area. The "boxing" was often mistaken for bucks proving their dominance to win the affections of the female. This is not so, as it is the female fighting off the unwanted attention of the male until she becomes receptive and ready to mate. She will be pursued by several males, but until she is ready she will avoid all their advances.
turn to suckle them. In between visits, they will keep perfectly still in the hope they won't be found by foxes and other predators. The cutting of grass for silage takes a heavy toll on the young of hares . They thrive on the perimeters of air fields. Spring is also a good time to sit quietly and see what migrant birds are back after their winter in sub Saharan Africa. I did this last week with a friend of similar interests and counted the house martins, the numbers are down on last year and he is very disappointed with the low numbers of swallows and the fact that both the spotted and pied flycatchers have not yet appeared. The redstart is back, but has had to find another nest site as his usual place in the chimney stack has been taken by house sparrows.
The cuckoo made himself heard on the 5th May and was calling from Moel Findeg. My daughter Jayne beat me to it this year, she was in the garden and came in to get me when she heard him calling. He called most of the following two days. The "host" bird on Moel Findeg is the meadow pippit. As it rises a couple of yards off the ground and hovers similar to the skylark it easily falls prey to the sparrow hawk Hares boxing CREDIT Simon Stirrup/WWT and merlin so its numbers are in The young, usually two are born decline.
