Welcome Welcome to the June edition of News & Views. Well the Carnival arrived and what an event! And what fantastic weather! There’s a full report from Sheila starting on page 18. Special thanks to Ian Robinson for loads of excellent photographs, including that for the front page of this month’s News & Views. There are more pictures on the website: llanferres.org. ( Well hopefully by the time your read this!) And well done Aunty She and all those who helped organise the event. Thank you to all our contributors this month and every month, without whom News & Views wouldn’t exist. It still surprises us just how many people contribute in so many ways to our community and many go ‘unsung’. Regular contributions to News & Views is quite a commitment and it is appreciated. Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan

Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club Our May meeting was addressed by two pilots from the Manchester Ship Canal, which was constructed in 1894/95 to help trade between Manchester and the rest of the world. Then there were 20 pilots, now there are 18. Each passenger or cargo ship is guided through the narrow canal to the river Mersey, one tugboat fore and the second aft, and then taken to the open seas. At our meeting on June 12th we will once again entertain ourselves by reading favourite poems and prose passages; all rounded off with a strawberry tea. You will be welcome to join us at 2pm. We each pay ÂŁ2 (ÂŁ2!!), which covers our refreshments and a free raffle ticket!

Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our speaker on May 14th was Jane Allison from Mayfield Plants - her topic "Making the most of your garden space". In her introduction, Jane said she would illustrate her talk with snapshots of gardens she had designed or redesigned. Her first task was to discuss with the owners "What do you want from your garden?" - this being paramount. She then translated their wants to a design for them to see and discuss. Her slides showed before and after with all the problems on the way. Her final slides were snippets of gardens which we might like to incorporate into our own gardens. Definitely a talk to inspire and ponder with your ideas in the future. Our thanks for a useful talk were expressed by the Chairman. Our next meeting will be on June 11th at 7.30pm and will be a talk entitled "Autumn and Winter Interest Plants" by Anthony Norman of Conquest Plants. As always, visitors at ÂŁ1 per meeting, and new members will be most welcome.

Llanferres Carnival The church were grateful to be involved with the hugely successful Llanferres Carnival on the bank holiday weekend with a cake stall and 'Guess the Weight and Names of the Lambs'. These raised around ÂŁ275 for the church. Thanks to everyone who rallied round and made cakes for the cake stall after Aunty She put the word round that we were struggling to make cakes, and to all who helped man the stall. The lamb's name was 'Legged Caesar' and the winning guess of 52.04kg for the weight of the lamb was very close to the actual weight of 52.5 kgs! The sheep enjoyed their day out and the carnival atmosphere! Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres CYNGOR Y CYMUNED - LLANFERRES COMMUNITY COUNCIL Minutes of the GENERAL MEETING Held Thursday 10th May 2018 Present: Cllr. John Almond (Chair), Cllr's Michael Cordiner, Bob Barton, Isla Watts, Amanda Curtis, Ivy Watts, Allan Morgans, and the Clerk, Mrs. G Dillon. There were Members of the public present and the County Councillor Martyn Holland. Apologies: Cllr Jac Armstrong, Cllr Rob Jones The Chairman apologised for the administration error, as due to mitigating circumstances the Annual General Meeting had to be postponed until the Month of June. Meeting Open to the Public - The Carnival Committee sent a letter of thanks for the Community Council support and Ms. Sheila Hawkes informed them that the Carnival was a huge success. The Gardening Club had a stall on the Carnival Field and had sold out in no time. The Chairman, on behalf of the Council thanked Ms. Hawkes for her unstinting work in resurrecting the Carnival. Declarations of Interest - none reported. Minutes of the Meeting Held 12th April 2018 - these were accepted as a true record and signed by the Chairman. Matters Arising - with regard to the erection of a fence panel in Cae Derwen, the Community Council has no objection and recommends that the current owner be contacted for permission. County Councillors Report - Cllr Holland offered the following Report prior to the Meeting. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Carnival Committee on a fantastic event last Sunday. I know that Sheila and the committee had some sleepless nights over the arrangements, but it proved to be a great success and it once again brought the Community and all ages together.

I mentioned in my last report that there had been a number of break-ins in the area. I have recently heard that Cafi Florence and the Offices of Countryside Services had also been broken into and a small amount of cash stolen. I am currently investigating reports that tree felling is taking place in the Big Covert. Depending on the volume of trees being felled a license from NRW may be required and I will be asking the relevant authorities to investigate. It has been brought to my attention that when a property in Llanferres or Tafarn y Gelyn is advertised via Right Move the nearest recommended school is either Gwernymynydd or Gwernaffield respectively. This will not help the sellers find buyers or the school if families do not move into this area because they feel that they will have to take their children into the next county for their education. I have been in touch with the local agents and contacted Right Move and asked them to correct their web site. I have been asked by the school governors to press for Zig Zag yellow lines outside the school to alleviate the congestion by the school gates at certain times of the day. I had a site meeting with officers from Highways and Housing to try and resolve who is responsible for the maintenance of the areas as you enter Cae Derwen. When the County adopted the road some five years ago it is not clear who had responsibility for the trees and grass cutting. A land registry search confirms that the builders still own two small parcels of land and the county will now approach them to prune the relevant trees etc. In my last report I mentioned that local government re-organisation was back on the table. It will be interesting to see what will happen now after the first minister's announcement that he is

White lines will be placed at the Fairy Glen Junction and a 20mph restriction with zig-zag lines outside the School in Llanferres for safety. The Chairman thanked Cllr Holland for his comprehensive Report. Reports from Other Meetings - Cllr Barton attended the 'Independent Remuneration Panel' Meeting held in Conwy Business Centre on 9th May. It was still unclear what Community and Town Councils had to do. On the 1st September, all payments made to Councillors should be published. Still not resolved as to whether they should be added to the Payroll or not. Cllr Barton wanted 'One Voice Wales' to put forward a Motion to ensure that the IRW puts through their Report in November and not in February, during which month would be after the Town & Community Councils had set their Precepts. Unresolved. Maintenance in the Community - a) Maes Ysgawen - no update. b) There is a collapsed grid in Tafarn-y-Gelyn. June Lovell - Work Placement in Uganda Betsi Cadwaladar Health Board recently sponsored me on a two month work placement in Uganda. This was a joint initiative with the Welsh Government's 'International Leadership Organisation'. The project was called 'Wales for Africa' and following an interview I requested one of the three positions, which was a placement in Uganda at the Bushikori Christian Centre. I was given a day's training and a selection of injections prior to going! The trip was well planned and I was met at Entebbe airport by the local representative. The next day we travelled to Mbale, an eight hour drive east of Kampala. During this trip I got the measure of the road system, which was - the largest vehicles rule the roads and 'bodas' which are small motorbikes are everywhere and are the main form of transport for most of the locals. The accommodation was a guest house in the grounds of 'CURE Hospital', a centre of excellence for spina bifida and hydrocephalus. The tour of the hospital was a fascinating experience due the innovative treatment being provided there - possibly one of the best in the world. My work was for Bushikori Christian Centre, a health centre and a school for 500 children. It was also a maternity/delivery suite and outreach programme. I was fortunate to work in all areas, delivering workshops to staff, counselling, teaching children, developing new ideas and projects, and working on projects in the community. I even had the opportunity to support the delivery of three babies!

One of the highlights of my work was to educate girls about periods and give them washable pads. This helps to keep them in school continuously rather than missing school every month. I taught over a thousand girls, as well as trained staff, so the health message could continue. In deprived areas where the re-usable pads were not available I introduced a system to help them make their own. This training reduced absenteeism in girls substantially - the difference while I was there was very noticeable. I also taught on a range of basic health and mental health messages.

The two months went very quickly, the Welsh Government have now rented a bungalow in Mbale and asked myself and a colleague to buy all the furnishings while we were there. This was an interesting experience and made us realise just how much you could get for your money in Mbale - a stark contrast to the UK!

During my stay I was introduced to a newly formed orphanage, which was supported by 'Nauyo Community Action', a local action group. Thirty seven children were living in sparse accommodation and being cared for by three local carers. I used my skills to identify children who needed medical or psychiatric interventions and liaised with treatment centres to arrange appropriate support. This included getting treatment for untreated epilepsy for a 12 and 4 year old and psychiatric treatment for a couple of children. At a local village one boy, aged ten, who had contracted cerebral malaria at a young age was controlled by his family by tying him with a rope to part of the house. This had been in place for seven years - to prevent him from running away. Following medication, he is much improved. Other treatments required, were for children who had suffered from malnutrition (causing rickets) and eye disease. The orphanage was part of my out-reach work and was very rewarding. I managed to leave a support network in place for medical care; however this is only part of the story - once a diagnosis is in place there are no funds to continue the medication, so I am continuing to support and trying to find a supportive charity.

This is a well-run project which provides lots of opportunities to work in a variety of settings, challenging your resourcefulness and ability to think on your feet. I learned a lot about myself and how to get things done with minimal resources. I also experienced what a kind and caring culture exists in Uganda and their generous nature.

What can I say?? What a result?? What a dream come true?? The 2018 Llanferres Carnival happened on Sunday 6th May….. only it didn't just happen…it exploded into life!! A mass of colour and smiling faces all on a beautiful sunny day!! It all started with the beautifully decorated Float carrying our , to be crowned, Queen Olivia and her 8 attendants. I believe the opening ceremony went to plan with Rev. Daniel doing the honours. It was wonderful to welcome Olive Parry to

participate by cutting the ribbon…..so important that the link with past Carnivals was made. In this vein, it was good to welcome two past Queens, Dilly and Elizabeth. Also in the parade were Cissie and Ada … what a sight to see! They so played their characters!! The childrens races started the fun of the day with many taking part!! The initial idea to ask parents to register their children to give our suppliers an idea of numbers to cater for, did not quite work out as planned!! People were still trying to register in the early

hours on the morning of the day!! The final number….153…..probably more as it was impossible to say no at the Gate! I was pleased with the choice of attractions… the Traditional Fairground side stalls, Skittle run, Crazy Golf, Bunjee Run, Bouncy Castle and Donkey Rides…… I think there was something for everyone!! The Marquee, generously sponsored by our Community Council, was thankfully not needed as shelter from adverse weather but , offered welcome shade instead! The stalls provided by P.T.A., our Church, Steph

selling Jewellery, and Dtoi’s Wok Station ( which sold out….twice!!) were all very popular. John and Joan’s plant stall sold out! There was free fruit provided by Tesco and Free Popcorn and Candy floss provided by Spavens Sweet Shop in Mold. There was Gilly selling Lucky Bags in aid of the Donkey Sanctuary, Cllr. Bob Barton bravely in the Stocks and Glitterbugz painting faces…all were kept very busy! The Beer Tent was extremely busy with Noel spending most of his time on trips to Tesco to restock! Jenny too was kept busy serving Hot Dogs and Burgers…

Dear Siobhan and Paul Just wanted to send a quick email to ask you to pass on our congratulations to everyone who helped organise the most fantastic Carnival today. Our family enjoyed a wonderful afternoon that was superbly organised and we could not believe the generosity shown to the children. They couldn’t believe they didn’t have to pay for anything and they had the most amazing day. I know Sheila was the driving force behind this but everyone involved deserves a huge thank you for such a wonderful and enjoyable event! Bob and Penny Goulding Cae Gwyn

all huge and delicious! Then there were the Vintage teas bei ng served in the Hall!! How popular were they!! Huge thanks to L.O.P.W.E.C for providing such a delicious treat!! The whole day was kept in line by our entertaining compere, Derek Robinson with close table top entertainment provided by Magician John Holt…..my nephews amongst others were wowed by him! I apologise for offering him to take off

his jacket in the heat……his response….with a wry smile…..it won't be quite the same performance if I did!!! Duh!! Silly me!! The whole day was expertly photographed by Ian Robinson some fantastic photos available!! Gilly Carney was the closest to Guess The Weight of the Lamb, Izzy Healy and her pram won the Dress Your Wheels with Young Farmer Elliot Jones a very close second! The Barr Family won the Treasure Hunt.. an enormous White Teddy Bear! The Bottle of Scotch on the bar…write your name

What a fun filled memorable day May 6th turned out to be, all the hours of hard work by organisers and volunteers made this a great event. We as a family enjoyed every minute. So a big thank you to all involved. Christine & Joe Dutton . Ty’n Llan

on a tag…. was sold out later at the Druid where Sam had laid on excellent live entertainment - and won by Dave Ivanhoff! The final highlight of the day has to be the Tug - o - War competitions organised by Gaz Jones… who also provided the Young Farmers Tent. The on the day response was fantastic!! It was a real spectacle to see all the children on the rope……including Queen Olivia….pulling against the winning Men’s Team!! True family,

community fun! The whole event was a dream come true …….. exactly as imagined!! Is it an event to be repeated? I think not. I will tell you why. The idea of reviving the Carnival was to celebrate the 60th (Diamond) Anniversary of the building of our Village Hall. There have been many well supported fund raising events throughout the 18 months of planning to enable us to provide a free day for under 16 yr olds…. with attractions free to all!! This really was quite an achievement…but I believe a one-off. To attempt to hold a similar event will take much organisation but, with the

added disadvantage of comparison. It could also be considered selfish. There are many other worthy projects in our community that need financial support…. But, hey!! This is just my opinion and anyone wishing to pick up the reins will have my full support! Having said that, I am not dismissing the idea of another Community event in the future…..just along different lines…remember It's A knockout…??? Watch this space………. But for now, it really was a dream come true! Huge thanks to all!! Sheila. All photographs by Ian Robinson See more at llanferres.org

Firstly, my thanks to the person who kindly left some bags of donations at my front door recently - the items have already been packed and sent out to refugees in need! Last week we received an urgent request for help from The Hope Project in Mytilene, Lesvos. Run by Eric and Philippa Kempson, they have reported that the refugee population is now over 9000 and the warehouse is empty. As the weather improves, the number of refugees arriving on the Greek islands has increased and the strain is beginning to show. They urgently need the following basic supplies, so CARE UK are therefore planning to send another container to Lesvos as soon as they can. Can you help with any of the following? ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Soap, shampoo, cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes Towels Socks and underwear (new only please) Shoes and flipflops Trousers, T-shirts & shorts - especially small size for men Female hygiene items (no tampons) Nappies and baby wipes Strollers Baby beds, boxes or bassinets Blankets Children's toys Sun screen & Sun hats Tents Mosquito repellent & mosquito nets for babies

We would also be extremely grateful to anyone who would like to donate funds towards the cost of buying new flipflops and underwear. ‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ A few days after the last issue of News and Views was distributed, we were visited by a large white bird. I had such fleeting glimpse, I wasn't sure what I had seen. I ruled out heron and egret and thought it could have been a gannet, which was way off course or perhaps a swan. Then Lee who lives in the village came to see me and said he had seen a large white bird with a long neck and long thin legs flying over the village early one morning as he was walking his dogs before work. He showed me a photograph on his phone saying someone had seen the same bird and photographed it on Burton marshes. I checked my book of birds of Europe and it confirmed what I thought and matched perfectly with the White Stork found in mainland Europe. Maybe it was blown this way with the strong east winds we have had. It has been seen over the Wirral, I can only go by the photograph Lee has shown me. Disappointingly the first time ever there are no frogs or toads in my pond. A friend was here from Irby on the Wirral and his pond is the same. I read recently about a deadly disease from the Far East which has killed frogs in their millions. I can only hope this is not the reason and it is the result of our long winter and cold spring.

they have claimed is their patch, so you will seldom see two males on the same pond or stretch of water. The female will lay her eggs by injecting them into the stem of a suitable pond weed. After hatching the nymph lives under water and will stalk about in the weed and is a voracious predator of other pond life, including tadpoles and small fish. They will spend about two years in the nymph state changing their skin a few times as they grow. When they emerge as full grown nymphs they will climb up a reed stem and will miraculously haul itself clear of the larval skin which will still be intact. When dry I have know florists collect these larval cases and use them in flower arranging. The newly hatched dragon fly will expand its wings and body and will soon be flying to the surrounding countryside to feed and mature, before finding a waterside territory to breed and start the process all over again. Like all types of dragon flies they are more active and likely to be seen in warm weather hunting other flying insects. Enjoy the wild flowers while you can. More next time, Eddie

Whilst looking for frogs spawn I saw a couple of nicely marked damsel flies flitting around the pond with the sun shining on them, they looked beautiful. I must look out for dragon flies, although it is a bit early yet. The Emperor dragon fly, which is easily distinguished by their size and the fact that their wings don't fold back along the length of the body, when seen close up it is a remarkable creature with its huge eyes and large outstretched wings, over 10cm long. The males are very territorial and will drive off other males from what

A note from your County Councillor Summer is here at last and the good weather helped to make the village Carnival a great success. I know that Sheila and her team had a few sleepless nights before hand but it all came together on the day and the crowds who attended all enjoyed what was a fantastic event. I would like to add my thanks to Sheila and her team for all their hard work and the preparation that went into this superb community get together. This week I had a meeting with the local Rural Crimes Police Officer after a number of sightings of a flat backed truck touring the area supposedly looking for scrap metal. A resident in Llanarmon came out of his house to find a man coming out of his garden shed and when he was challenged he said he was looking for scrap metal. He was “politely asked to leave and the incident has been reported to the police. The police stated that these gentlemen are often casing the joint for other criminals who will return at a later date to steal tools and equipment. Please check your security, locks, etc and report any suspicious incidents immediately using the police contact number 101 for non emergency events or 999 if a crime is actually happening. On the same subject sadly both Caffi Florence and the offices of Countryside Services were broken into at Loggerheads recently. Cash seems to have been the thieves main target and fortunately little cash is kept on the premises at any time. I recently received a call to say that houses being advertised for sale on Right Move in Llanferres and in Tafarn Y Gelyn are quoting Gwernymynydd and Gwernaffield as the nearest schools. This error could have a negative effect on local house sales and on the future of our school if families are put off from moving

into the village because they feel the nearest school is to far away. I have reported this issue to Right Move and the local Estate agents involved and they both say they will look into this problem. If you are selling your house it may be a good idea to check the school details on Right Move because you could be missing out on potential sales!! If you go down to the woods today you may be in for a big surprise. I have had reports that trees are being felled in the Big Covert and that it appears that cycle ramps are being cut into rock outcrops at the eastern end of the wood. I have asked DCC officers to look into these possible activities to ensure there are no breaches of planning regulations or tree felling licences. It would be a great shame if the peace and tranquility of the beautiful wood is destroyed by unapproved activities. After I was approached by a local resident in Maeshafn about the Fairy Glen junction I am pleased to confirm that Give Way white lines have now been painted there to remind people to stop before pulling out. I am also pleased to report that the Give Way sign and the Flintshire Tourist Route signs have been replaced on the triangle in the village as well. I have held another site meeting in Cae Derwen with the Housing team and Highways to establish who is responsible for the maintenance of two small parcels of land as you enter Cae Derwen on the right and left hand sides. As you know I managed to get Cae Derwen adopted in 2012 but it was not clear if the adoption included these parcels of land. It appears that it did not and they are still owned by the original builders. I have asked the county to look into this and to resolve the maintenance issue on behalf of the neighbouring properties. Best wishes, Martyn, 01824 780703 martyn.holland@denbighshire.gov.uk

The Leete One of the most popular walks in our area is the Leete Path that runs alongside the River Alyn as it flows from Loggerheads towards Rhydymwyn. The path is about 5 km, or 3 miles, long and lies mainly on top of the west bank of an ancient watercourse, known as The Leete. The views (at least when leaves are no longer on the trees!) across the Alyn Valley to the west become more impressive the further one travels north. On the east side there are several abandoned mine workings. The most prominent one is known as Devil's Gorge. The lead mines under Mold Mountain were troubled by water entering the workings from the River Alyn via natural channels in the limestone known as swallows. In 1823 the Mold Mines Company was formed with substantial financial backing and amalgamated all the lead mines from Pen y fron in the north to Cathole (or Cadole as it is now known) in the south. The celebrated mining engineers John Taylor & Sons constructed The Leete to carry water to power their waterwheels further down stream near Rhydymwyn. The waterwheels were used to power the pumps that dewatered the mines. The start of The Leete had to be upstream of all the known swallows so the starting point was roughly where the stone bridge crosses the river within the present day Loggerheads Country Park. The Mold Mines Company operated the lead mines until about 1845 after which The Leete fell into disuse Over the years the watercourse has become very eroded. The best preserved section is north of the bridge over Devil's Gorge. Nowadays it is well

hidden by undergrowth and difficult to spot. The water channel here is 2 m wide and over 1.2 m deep and both banks are lined with stone revetment. Last September Richard Hankinson of the Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust excavated a trial section across The Leete within the Loggerheads Park. He discovered that the puddled clay lining was still intact (and retained water after heavy rain). At this point the channel was 2.6m wide and 0.5m deep. Many years ago a group of dedicated local residents known as "The Friends of the Leete" used to cut back encroaching vegetation in order to keep the footpath clear. Nowadays this work is carried out by the Denbighshire Countryside Volunteers.

36 News & Views Dealing With A Nuisance Call I received a phone call last month from someone claiming to be from BT. He asked about recent faults that had been repaired or were outstanding, especially broadband. Last January an engineer spent four hours repairing the connection at the pole and then found the wire from the pole to our house had most probably been struck by lightning. As I had also been chasing BT about my poor broadband service since last year, such a call was not a surprise. However, there was something about his questions that made me suspicious. So I asked for his direct dial number to allow me to phone him back and confirm that the call was genuine. To my surprise he openly admitted that it was a hoax call. I put the phone down, immediately rang 1471 and was amazed to be told that I had been called by a UK phone number. I contacted BT to pass on the details of the hoax caller. I was informed that as a BT customer I could register with BT Call Protect, a new service which helps you prevent nuisance calls. It is free and simple to set up. It gives you the ability to identify and prevent nuisance calls by sending them to a junk voicemail service.

cyber crime. It operates Monday to Friday between 8am to 9pm, and 9am to 5pm at the weekend, providing a central point of contact for information about fraud and financially motivated cyber crime. People are scammed, ripped off or conned everyday and they want this to stop. The service is run by the City of London Police working alongside the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau that is responsible for assessment of the reports and to ensure that fraud reports reach the right place.
