Welcome

This month’s cover has a few of the many excellent drawings of Mum that will be featured in the Denbighshire Free Press next week, including those drawn by children of Ysgol Bro Famau. Just in case you hadn’t spotted the Mums, they are from top left clockwise:

the National Eisteddfod (rearranged to avoid Red Nose Day). The Auction will now take place on Friday 22nd March in the Village Hall, and judging by the extensive list of promises should prove a very successful event - see the centre pages for details.

The person responsible should be made to pay for the sourcing and installing of a replacement, there are plenty available on the internet. The Community Council should pursue this with vigour. I do not see why our village should have to suffer the effects of this person's negligence and bad driving. Andrew MacLean Rose Cottage Tafarn Y Gelyn

Goodbye & Good Luck! Sadly we say goodbye to Mike & Gloria Hall this month, as they are relocating to Banbury. Both will be sorely missed, as they have been an integral part of the community for many years. Gloria as school caretaker and the driving force behind breakfast club and after school club. Mike served on the Playing Field committee as our resident playground and health and safety expert for many years too. Good luck to you both - keep in touch!

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club At the meeting on Monday February 11th our guest speaker, Nikki Giles, spoke about growing vegetables. In her illustrated talk she began by talking of her reasons for growing vegetables - taste - freshness and pure joy in her results. By using natural compost, leaf mould, comfrey and nettle tea and avoiding fertilisers good crops could be produced. Particular attention should be paid to rotation to avoid disease being carried forward to next year. Finally Nikki showed all present how to make growing tubes from newspaper. All members have noted several points to carry out in their 'veg plot' from such an enthusiast. Our next meeting will be on Monday March 11th when AONB Senior Warden, David Shiel, will give a talk entitled " The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB". Visitors (ÂŁ1 per meeting) and new members ( Annual subscription ÂŁ5) will be most welcome. Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond ( 810808 Awarded

Church News - Pancake Party Thanks to all who bought tickets for and attended the Pancake Party on 12th February. I hope everyone had a good time. We certainly made enough pancakes! Thank you to the Rotary Club of Mold who attended in force and who were able to demonstrate the Lifestraws to an appreciative audience. We made approximately ÂŁ750, half of which will go to Llanferres Church and half to "Lifestraws". I am very grateful for all who supported the event by donating produce - Mike the Milk, Caffi Florence, and Cutting Edge. Thanks to all who worked so hard all evening, and to all who bothered to turn up on a cold dark Tuesday to buy cakes and eat pancakes! Wendy and Nigel Shillito

Badminton Club news February has been a quiet month in Llanferres badminton club. There have been a couple of matches where getting a team out was difficult for all senior teams (The A, B and the C). The junior club has seen plenty of progress in back-hands, overhead clears, rear court movement and return of serves.

The A team saw a draw against Northop in their village hall (proving that all the old training in Llanferres village hall paid off!!!) whilst a third match against Airbus saw a loss. The cup plate saw a draw in games against Rossett in the cup week, however Future day tournaments:

due to it being a cup game meant that Llanferres lost overall by only 20 points. The B team lost 11-5 to Flint Pheonix in the cup with Luke playing particularly well The C team have seen no matches since late February so plenty of practice in Ruthin leisure centre for a busy month ahead in March. The following month or so the C team will see 6 matches in both home and away venues.

Junior NEWBA Tournament Deeside 3rd March (Closing Date: 18th February)

Junior Welsh Nationals Sports Wales National Centre 16th and 17th March (Closing Date: 23rd February)

Senior NEWBA League at Deeside 24th March

Junior Gareth Coppack Tournament at Deeside 14th April

For more information on county tournaments and progress of Llanferres Badminton Club visit www.newba.org.uk. To give the sport a go, please head down to Ruthin Leisure Centre at 6:30pm (for juniors) or 7:30pm (for seniors) every Thursday.

Local news Jubilee Tower revealed for the first time in 100 years The most prominent building in Flintshire and Denbighshire is about to receive major refurbishment. Flintshire and Denbighshire County Councils are working together to develop a programme of work to reconsolidate parts of the Jubilee Tower - at the summit of Moel Famau. Parts of the tower are beginning to deteriorate and access onto the tower has become increasingly difficult. The Jubilee Tower was built in 1810 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of King George III. The original 120ft tower, set on a broad base, blew down in the 1860s and the remains have slowly deteriorated ever since. Major repairs were carried out in 1969, but since then it has received very little attention - despite being one of the most visited spots in both counties - getting over 200,000 visitors every year. In 2009 Flintshire and Denbighshire Councils with support from the Clwydian Range AONB commissioned specialist conservation architects TACP to examine the condition of the building and to make recommendations for its repair and reconsolidation. Now with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Heather and Hillforts

Project work can begin to take place. It is hoped that one of the original corner bastions can be revealed probably for the first time in over 100 years. The original base of the tower has been covered up as parts of the tower collapsed over the years. A preliminary excavation last year showed that at least one of these bastions is still intact and work will start in the next few weeks to reveal it. The tower, designed by Thomas Harrison, is a listed building so a careful programme of reconsolidation has been developed. Fiona Gale, Denbighshire's Archeologist said: “A careful study of the tower has identified key areas in need of repair and reconsolidation. Specialist stone masons will use traditional techniques to carefully repair the stone work. We also hope to reveal a corner section of the tower that has lain buried for over 100years which will give a much better sense of it original scale." Grosvenor Stone - specialist stone masons have been contracted to carry out the work. The Jubilee Tower is one of the areas most prominent landmarks

Local news and a popular walk for tens of thousands of people. Over the next few weeks the tower will be shrouded in scaffolding as the repairs get underway - but there will be opportunities to look closely at what is happening with a series of guided visits to the site. The work is anticipated to last around 12 weeks. David Shiel - Senior Countryside Officer for the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB said This is the first time in over 40 years that any significant work has taken place at the Tower. At over 1800ft - the highest point in the Clwydian Range - working at the top of Moel Famau, will be challenging - particularly at this time of year. We hope that the original stone can be salvaged from the buried rubble of the original tower to make things a little easier." Cllr Carolyn Thomas, chair of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB said, " it is excellent news that we are able to carry out this important work. The Jubilee Tower is such an iconic landmark for the Clwydian Range and many of the communities of both Flintshire and Denbighshire - but we have perhaps taken it for granted over the years - despite it receiving over 200,000 visitors every year very little has been invested over the last 40 years in safeguarding the fabric of the building. Nature Notes What a difference a day makes. Walking in woodland, on a cold and cloudy 12th February, one could practically feel the silence, for birds were virtually non-existent. I briefly heard the 'keck-keck' call of a Greater-spotted woodpecker and the muted song of a Robin and I spotted a Blue tit but that was all. Yet a day or so later, although it was still chilly, the sun was shining and the birds seemed to respond. Chaffinches, Great tits, Nuthatches, Coal tits and Robins were advertising their presence with song and call-notes, the Jackdaws were noisy, a Buzzard 'mewed' overhead and I heard a Blackbird briefly practising. I suppose birds, like ourselves, feel better when the sun shines. Later, by the river, a pair of Dippers were in courtship display but were having to keep to shallow eddies or the outside of bends, where the river ran slower, to search for the waterdwelling invertebrates that comprise their main food. Then short, shrill, piping call notes alerted me to a Kingfisher that flashed down river - a blur of orange and blue and whirring wings. At the same time, it occurred to me that on our stretch of the River Alyn I have not seen any Moorhen or Mallard of late. Have they moved to warmer places for the winter or has the population of both been decimated by a predator - perhaps mink. There used to be several pairs of each breeding locally. In the woods, Wild garlic is sprouting and giving off its pungent odour, when crushed underfoot, surely a sign of spring. And love is in the air! Not

only the Dippers but Ravens can be seen in courtship display; Rooks are returning to their old nests; I noticed a new, Grey squirrel drey high in an Ash tree which, by its size, I adjudged to be a breeding drey; mole hills are everywhere for it is their breeding season and they travel about seeking mates; although I have not seen or received any reports of spawn, frogs are becoming active for I have seen them 'In flagrante delicto'. However, up to now, I have not seen any newts in my pond and I have not seen any Bumblebees yet they usually start to emerge from hibernation in late February but, perhaps, it is still a little cold for them, although there is pollen on Ivy, Hazel and Willow not to mention Crocus, Lesser Celandine, Hellebores and Snowdrops. Another anomaly is that, though Waxwings have been quite widespread (including here in Llanferres, see February Nature Notes), this winter both Fieldfares and Redwings have been few and far between and yet it is the same sort of winter weather and shortage of food on the Continent that usually drives them over to Britain. We did not have a very good wild berry crop last summer and I wonder if the Fieldfares and Redwings have just continued on to Ireland where the weather is always milder than on the British mainland.
