Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The first meeting of the year, on February 12th, as usual, was to arrange the Show Schedule under the guidance of Show Secretary, Dr Ivy Watts. The Novice Class section introduced last year was cancelled as there had been no entries. The main sections of Garden and Plant produce were marginally changed but the Home and Adult Handicraft had major changes made. The Art section was cancelled for 2018 due to lack of support in 2017. The Show as usual will be on the first Saturday in September, which this year is September 1st, doors open at 2pm and admission stays at £1 for Adults and 50p for Children. The next Garden Club meeting will be on Monday, March 12th in the Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm when our guest speaker will be David Palmer, a volunteer for the Woodland Trust and his topic will be "Restoration of Ancient Woodlands". Refugee Essentials, North East Wales (RENEW) This month, I’ve been helping a friend to set up a new refugee support group, whose focus is to send essential aid to refugees and their families, who are still resident in camps across Europe. Refugee Essentials, North East Wales (RENEW) will operate as a new branch of the established charity CARE UK (Refugee Aid NW), who, over the last two years, have sent a total of 34 containers of essential aid to refugee camps in Syria, mainland Greece and the Greek islands. These containers have already included all the many bags of donations given to me, directly by you, the readers of News and Views. So, as far as collecting your kind donations goes, nothing has really changed. The only difference, is that I will take any future donations to one of RENEW’s new community ‘Donate and Sort’ sessions, for onward despatch to the camps via CARE UK. Our first community base is at Bistre Emmanuel Church Hall in Buckley, where volunteers are invited to pop in with their donations, to say hello and learn more about our work, and to help us sort and pack donations for the next container. We are there every Wednesday from 11.00am to 3.00pm and again from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. We are currently collecting good quality, clean, warm and waterproof clothing and footwear for men, women, children and babies. In particular, we need ● Jumpers, Fleeces, Coats and Tops ● Men’s trousers and jeans ● Women’s trousers, skirts and dresses ● Hats, Gloves and Scarves ● Hijabs and headscarves ● Nightwear ● Sturdy shoes and boots ● Underwear (new only please) ● Maternity wear ● Prams/pushchairs ● Moses baskets ● Toiletries ● Nappies/baby wipes It’s still a huge task, but by supporting us at RENEW, you can be assured that your donations really do make a meaningful difference to the lives of refugee families living in terrible circumstances abroad, as well as to those starting their new lives by resettling here in North Wales.

A note from your County Councillor Once again as I write this article it is snowing heavily and as a family we can not wait for spring to arrive!! The first signs are there with more snow drops than ever in the hedge rows. Sadly this year they are having to compete with the ever increasing amounts of litter discarded by passing motorists. I travelled to Shrewsbury last week and it was sad to see the state of our roads and countryside with acres of rubbish in all directions. Much of this rubbish ends up in the gullies and water courses which then empty into our streams, rivers and eventually the sea. No wonder our seas are so heavily polluted with plastic. This rubbish does not get there by itself and we all have a part to play by disposing of our rubbish in the bins provided or by taking it home. By leading by example we will encourage future generations to protect our environment and plant. As spring approaches it is that time of year to remind everyone that they should keep their dogs on a lead when crossing farm land especially during the lambing season. In the papers this week we have had another case of a dog attack on sheep in the Llanferres area and the County Council in conjunction with Countryside Services and the Police are reminding everyone to keep their dogs under control. With the potential for further bad weather I have asked the counties highways team to ensure that the salt bins are all replenished and additional

piles of salt have been delivered to such areas as Bryn Alyn and Maeshafn. The patching work on the Cilcain road has now been completed and the work has included some new curbs as well. This weekend I will be visiting the area to see if we can do any more to improve the position for other residents along that stretch of road. The County Council have been busy this month with the appointment of a new Chief Executive and the setting of the budgets and council tax for the coming year. Our new Chief Executive is Judith Greenhalgh who hails from Derbyshire and has a very impressive track record in Local Government. We all look forward to working with her and know that Dr Mohamed Mehmet will be a hard act to follow As we move forward there are many challenges facing us especially as Welsh Government do not now see local government as a priority when in comes to funding. Over the last six years DCC have cut over ÂŁ30 million for from our budgets mainly by doing things in a different way but as financial pressures come from such things as caring for an increasingly ageing population we will have to prioritise our own budgets which will not be easy or painless. Sadly council tax will rise in Denbighshire this year by 4.75% with 1.5 million more for social care for the elderly. There is also a continuing commitment to the 21st century schools project and we are looking at a further 2.5 million from capital for our roads and bridges.

A note from your County Councillor The Dark Skies project is ongoing with surveys completed across the AONB to see if we can qualify for Dark Sky status. The survey showed the following, Llanarmon a 5.40 Nelms rating, Llandegla 5.80, Loggerheads 5.75, Eryrys 5.60, the Horseshoe Pass 6.00 and Llanferres 3.50. The higher the rating the darker the sky and 6.00 is the best you can get in the UK because of our overall light pollution. Sadly as you can see we have some work to do in Llanferres to improve the ratings and most of the extra light in Llanferres possibly comes from the trunk road roadside lighting.( Nelms translates to Naked Eye Limiting Magnitude!) The three county councils will endeavour to replace street light bulbs with low emission LED bulbs and they will encourage everyone to reduce the light from their own properties where possible. These changes will help counties with their electricity bills, help to encourage a new form of tourism, help the environment and peoples health. Surveys show that people sleep better in dark sky areas which has a positive impact on their overall health. The plan is now to apply for Community Dark Sky status and move to full Dark Sky Status for the whole of the AONB as soon as we can. Finally we have had a number of road accidents on the A494 in the last few weeks. Some caused by the sudden hail storm that created a film on the road and one where a car managed to take out two telegraph poles just after the second turning for Llanarmon. I have asked the Trunk Roads Agency to chase the Utility companies to repair these ASAP because they are still a

danger to traffic. I have also asked them to remove the large black cable which is lying in the hedge on the right hand side of the road as you head towards the Clwyd Gate. If a vehicle snags this or a hedge cutter catches it their could be serious consequences for all concerned especially if it is still live!! Best wishes, Martyn

Were the Ancient Romans in Llanferres? The ancient Romans exploited the mineral wealth of all the countries that they occupied. They were engaged in lead mining in north east Wales and left signs of their presence across the area. The most substantial evidence of lead mining is the discovery of lead pigs stamped with Roman identification marks. These pigs were presumably lost during transit as the Romans would not have casually discarded such valuable material. The Romans used large quantities of lead in their engineering works. There have also been widespread casual finds of single Roman coins and also of a number of significant hoards of coins. A number of Roman coins were discovered under the lead dressing floors at the Talargoch Lead Mine near Meliden, Flintshire. However it is not possible to identify the ancient tools found in the mine as being of Roman origin. Closer to home we have the two hoards of Roman coins found on Moel Fenlii in 1816 and 1847 (as mentioned in a previous article about Moel Fenlii). Furthermore Thomas Pennant, in his book "Tour in Wales" (1794), reported the finding in Llanferres of an abundance of Roman denarii but failed to say when or where the find was made. In 1923 a Roman coin was found on the mine spoil heap on the west bank of the River Alyn just north of Cascade Wood (Fairy Glen). However recent exploration of the accessible parts of the adjacent

Maes-y-safn Lead Mine failed to show any evidence of Roman working. (In the absence of explosives the Roman miners used only picks and fire setting in mining.) It is possible that if there had been signs of Roman working these could have been removed by later miners widening the workings to make it easier for them to transport material through the workings. Finally, Thomas Badeslade's map of north Wales drawn in 1740 shows a line of mine pits near Loggerheads labelled "old Roman hillocks". This was presumably following local oral tradition and there is no supporting evidence of their antiquity. The workings were certainly considered "old" in the early eighteenth century when lead mining disputes led to the Grosvenor family commissioning Thomas Badeslade to draw the map showing the lead mines in north east Wales.. So the evidence for ancient Romans being present in our Community is flimsy to say the least.
