Save Moel Famau Update Although things seem to have gone quiet with no planning application yet made, unfortunately, Go Ape’s plans for Moel Famau have not gone away! This month, representatives of the SMF committee visited Mr Tristram Mayhew, one of the Directors of Go Ape down at the Wyre Forest Go Ape site in Worcestershire. We were trying to gauge the strength of the company's intention to set up Zip Wild on Moel Famau in the face of the many arguments that have been raised against it, and were disappointed to find that he was unimpressed by change in use, noise, traffic and ecological arguments, even though he admitted that he had never even visited our area. He stressed what he saw as the economic benefits, (as I see it, mainly to Go Ape) and felt that it was simply up to the planning authorities to make the judgement as to what was in the best interest of residents, visitors and our environment. It is only a matter of time before the application is made, and every one who opposes the high level Zip wires dominating the Cwm Bach will need to be ready to lodge their objections with Denbighshire Planning Authority. If you want to be kept informed about developments, and have help with making objections send us your email address via the Save Moel Famau Website or contact jane.hemming@moelfamau.com Nigel Shillito (SMF Committee Chairman)

Local news SUSPENSION At the Community Council meeting held on 10th July 2008, an incident occurred involving Mr R Barton, who was sitting in the public gallery. As a result, a member of the public wrote a letter of complaint to Denbighshire’s Chief Executive who passed it on to the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales. The Ombudsman investigated the complaint, found it justified and passed it to Denbighshire’s Standard Committee for determination. On 13th November 2009 the Standards Committee decided that Mr Barton

should be suspended for a period of Three Months for a breach of the Councillors Code of Conduct. Mr Barton appealed against his suspension to The Adjudication Panel for Wales. The Panel met on 23rd March 2010 at The Northop Hall Country House Hotel in Northop to consider the appeal. The Panel rejected the appeal. Mr Barton has, therefore, been suspended from being a Councillor for a period of Three Months which commenced on 24th March 2010.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Rhubarb and Almond Torte This month’s recipe just had to involve rhubarb that is absolutely gorgeous at the moment. If you don’t already have a clump at the bottom of your garden you should. A crown of rhubarb costs little more that a packet of rhubarb in the supermarket. Better still ask a neighbour for a piece of theirs – it needs splitting from time to time. It will last for years and years and give you a wonderful ingredient at this time of year to make crumbles, pies, jam, chutneys and this great cake. This is a recipe we often make on our cake-making workshops. It is a very quick cake to make and yet looks and tastes fantastic. It can be made with all types of fruit such as raspberries, apples and blackberries or apricots. However the combination of rhubarb, ginger and the almonds is delicious. 150g butter or margarine 150g caster sugar 150g ground almonds 50g flaked almonds 150g Self Raising Flour 1 egg 250g fruit Stem ginger or spices to suit fruit Cream fat and sugar. Add eggs, ground almonds, flour and spices/ginger. Add ½ mixture to a greased and lined 20cm round tin. Cover with fruit and dot with rest of mixture. Sprinkle with flaked almonds and cook for about 45 minutes at 180C. Sprinkle with icing sugar to serve.

Church News Those attending these group services have appreciated the benefits of being in a larger congregation than is usually the case and of meeting new people. Quiet Evenings At 8 o'clock on Monday 17th May there will be a peaceful service of quiet prayer followed by Compline in Llanferres. Easter Vestry Our Easter Vestry was held on the first Wednesday after Easter attended by PCC members and two members of the congregation. The Rector gave a full and encouraging report. Josh Griffiths was reappointed as Rector's Warden and Brian Skelhorn as People's Warden. Other officers also remain the same: Gay Headley, Secretary, Noel Headley, Treasurer (with Gift Aid duties carried out by Patrick Austin) and Rob Armstrong, Verger. Other duties such as flowers, selection of hymns and general administration are carried out by members of the PCC. This year is the year when the Electoral Roll has to be completely renewed. There will be forms at the back of the Church with an accompanying explanatory leaflet. Please fill these in and return to Daryl Austin. Patrick emphasised the great value of Gift Aid for the finances of the Church. He also encouraged the use of Standing Orders for church giving. Please contact him if you feel able to give regularly in this way.

Fun in the Garden As has become an annual custom, Patrick and Daryl will hold this event on 5th June 12 o'clock onwards to raise money for Llanferres Church and (this year) for the Northern Cleft Foundation. This is a very worthwhile charity to help with the cost of operating on children with cleft palates in India. Since planning the event we have learned there is a Welsh Rugby match at 2.30 - don't let that stop you coming - either come early or come anyway and watch it at 19 Cae Gwyn!

Maeshafn CC News Season already underway as I speak. First match was v. Liverpool Diocese, when we managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, partly as a result of two monster sixes from Tom Hall, Steve Pugh's highest ever score (13 - although he does dispute this - he claims to have hit 20 in past seasons personally I suspect he was asleep at the time and waving his arms around), and hitting 130 in reply to the Diocesean 129.

Maeshafn CC is sponsored by www.businessbusstop.com Quite a tough month with two of the matches against the anticipated league leaders - Corwen and Ruthin.

Ruthin are particularly difficult as they have a bowler who makes up for his size with deadly accurate and misleading quick bowling that won him the best overall bowling award last season across all leagues (I think). Good game played in nice weather as Personally I found the best way to play always for April - we now usually get 6 him last year was to point the bat at weeks of rain, so suspect by the next the ball and close my eyes. Nature Notes Last month I wrote about not having seen any chiffchaffs up to that time but on the 27th March there would seem to have been a 'fall' of these birds because I heard, and saw, several widely separated birds singing gustily and I saw my first wheatear the same day (both about a week to ten days later than usual). Swallows, on the other hand, arrived nearly two weeks earlier than usual, being in the district as early as 10th April, probably brought in on the southerly winds that occurred round that time and I saw my first butterfly, a comma which overwinters as an adult insect, on the 4th April. Gardeners may have noticed small(1cm high) cone shaped mounds of earth on their lawns looking like small volcanoes. These are caused by the tawny mining bee, Andrena fulva. This attractive insect is about the size of a honey bee but covered in brightly coloured, fox-red hairs, although the male is much duller coloured. Preferring light, sandy type soil, it digs a vertical shaft 8 -12 inches(200-300mm) deep with several brood cells branching of it. It fills each cell with a mixture of nectar and pollen and lays an egg in each cell. The larva hatches within a few days, grows quickly and pupates within a few weeks. The adult bee hatches from the pupa and hibernates in the soil until the following spring. They are harmless, so there is no danger of being stung, and are very beneficial as pollinators of early flowering shrubs and also of fruit trees such

as apples, pears, currants and gooseberries. A local lady brought to me, for identification, a fairly large 13inch (30mm) long beetle which she had found under a stone. It was a violet ground beetle which lives under stones during the day and comes out at night. I sometimes find one under our rubbish bin. Mainly black in appearance, it has a conspicuous metallic purple sheen to the thorax and edges of the wing cases. Ground beetles cannot fly as the wing cases are fused together. Although quite ferocious looking, these beetles are harmless to humans and do not bite and are in fact very beneficial in the garden as their food is mainly slugs, snails, woodlice, millipedes and centipedes. Driving along some main roads, and even some minor ones, one can see cushions of pale lilac flowers forming a continuous line. They belong to early scurvy grass (Cochlearia danica) which is not a grass but a member of the cabbage family. Normally a resident of coastal salt marshes, this little plant has colonised road verges which have become suitable habitat through the salt spread on the roads as a de-icing agent. The phenomenon only started in the early 1990s or late 1980s but the plant now seems to have colonised roads throughout Britain its seed probably spread by passing traffic. In the past, sailors returning from long voyages often suffered from scurvy and ate large amounts of scurvy grass, which is rich in vitamin C, a lack of which is the cause of scurvy.
