Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday April 8th at Llanferres Village Hall was optimistically looking forward to a better summer than that of 2012. Our guest speaker was Nicolette Evans, lecturer at Northop College. Her topic for our lecture was "Herbaceous Borders". Nicolette described the criteria of plants, soil, border size and design and flowering seasons. In the continuation of her talk, Nicolette gave out coloured photo sheets and talked of her 16 favourite plants and 9 for later flowering in the autumn to give interest, colour and plant variation. There was inspiration in this talk to plant a few herbaceous items, if not a full border. Our next meeting will be a visit to Walton Fuchsia Nursery at Lymm. Names were taken for the minibus travel, leaving Llanferres Church at 6pm. Further details for this trip can be obtained from the secretary. Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond ( 810808

Local News National Eisteddfod of Wales Denbigh 2013 The Llanferres Working party wish to thank all those who supported our "Auction of Promises" by so generously donating items for sale, bidding so freely on the night and giving cash contributions. The final total to be banked is £2,000 which exceeded all our expectations. Added to £260 that we already have in the bank, this means that the Community Council can support the Eisteddfod in Denbigh, as was requested, without calling on Public funds. We are also very grateful to all the Businesses from Ruthin, Mold, and surrounding areas who responded so wonderfully to our requests for "Promises". It has been quite a long slog,a bit traumatic at times, but well worth it. DIOLCH YN FAWR.

Local News Llanferres Over 60s Club April's meeting was a talk by Mrs Viv Craig about her experiences scuba diving. Dressed in the wet suit she wears in warm waters, she showed us all the equipment that is necessary and explained all about the training that has to be gone through before one is qualified to dive. She then showed us film of her and her husband diving in the Red Sea. All the different coloured fish and corals were amazing! May's meeting may sound a bit dull after that. It is a talk by a lady from the County "Advocacy Service", which can give advice to older people on any subject at all which bothers them. The service is free and confidential, and takes place in the person's own home, e.g. How to make complaints; Dealing with unwanted callers and letters; Financial worries; and making sure one is using all the help and support that is available. Followed by the usual "Cuppa" Raffle and chat. Olive Betty 810294 810722 Awarded

Church News Sundays in May 5th 9.30 Holy Communion 12th 11.00 Family Service 19th 9.30 Holy Communion 26th 9.30 Holy Communion Easter Vestry This very important Annual meeting was held in St Berres' Church on Tuesday, 9th April. After many years of being Rector's Warden Josh Griffiths felt it was time to step down. Brian Skelhorn will step sideways from People's Warden to Rector's Warden and we give a very warm welcome to Anne Woodward as our new People's Warden. Anne is a retired infant teacher, has lived in Tafarn-y-Gelyn for many years, is a Welsh speaker and brings with her a wealth of local knowledge and a feminine touch! (We are unusual in Llanferres in having so many men holding office in our Church). Noel Headley remains as Treasurer and Gay as Secretary. Rob Armstrong, Michael Cordiner, Ruth Cordiner, Clare Dyson, Josh Griffiths and Wendy Shillito remain as members of the Parochial Church Council, as do the two Clergy Rev'd Adrian Copping and Rev'd Phil Bettinson. Our sincere thanks go to Josh, who has served faithfully as Rector's Warden for many years with quiet humour and diligence. Ascension Day An open air Holy Communion at St Mary's, Cilcain will be held on 9th May at 6.30 pm. There is something very special about holding an Ascension Day service outside: there are stunning views from Cilcain church and the whole atmosphere aids the sense of spirituality. Chairs and loud speaker system are all provided. (If it rains, the service will be held inside the church.) Chef Armstrong demonstrates his skills
Christian Aid Week The usual members of the church will be collecting in Llanferres during this week from 12th - 18th May - please give generously to this excellent charity. A Warmer Church Two electric heaters have been installed at the back of the church and I have been told that the church does feel warmer. Remarkably, the congregation numbers have been holding up in the inclement weather. Open Church We are hoping to be able to open the church during daylight hours during the next few months so that people can pop in for a few quiet moments of prayer or contemplation.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Poached rhubarb with Greek yoghurt & toasted oats Rhubarb is at its very best at the moment. A couple of crowns at the bottom of the garden will make many desserts and cakes. This is a very simple recipe that makes a great mid week pudding. It can be made healthier by using low fat yoghurt or 'poshed up' for a supper party by using a blow torch on the sugar and adding some chopped nuts to the oats. 6 sticks of rhubarb 2 pieces of stem ginger 1 orange Tub Greek yoghurt 100g oats Demerara sugar Wash rhubarb and chop into 2 cm pieces. Chop stem ginger into small pieces Slice skin from orange and chop into small pieces removing pithy bits. Place rhubarb, ginger and orange in a pan and place on low heat. There is no need to add water but just watch during the first few minutes of cooking before the rhubarb juices start to run. Cook gently for about 10 minutes until rhubarb is just soft. Take care not to over cook. Poaching in the oven will help retain the shape of the rhubarb pieces. Place oats on a baking sheet. Place under a hot grill for about 30 seconds until just browning. Place fruit into a dish, place a dollop of yoghurt on top and sprinkle with the toasted oats and demerara sugar

Badminton Club news The Badminton season is drawing to an end with only club nights and training to continue until the summer holidays. All matches have been played by all three teams. In the juniors, the A team started in Division 2 where they stayed for most of the season apart from Llanferres’ fixture at Mold, when they played in Division 3. They finished on a high when they came top of Division 2. The B team started the season in Division 5 and remained there for the entire season. Unfortunately, the B team were unable to take part in half of the fixtures due to lack of players available. This was also due to two fixtures being held in the school holidays. Well done to the younger players who regularly played up for the A team. Also in the junior section on Sunday 14th April the Gareth Coppack tournament was held at Deeside Leisure Centre. Llanferres entered 1 team in the competition. This team was William Fellows, Declan Bonar, Nick Prtak and James Ormerod (see photo L-R) . They came first in their group and then beat Connah’s Quay C in the quarter finals. They then met Flint A in the semi-finals and only lost out on a place in the final by 1 point. At the end of this season, we see Moira ending her time with the junior squad as junior league representative and thank her for all her hard work in organising events, junior league matches and at junior training sessions.
In the seniors, the A Team had a very slow start to the year with some heavy defeats and despite some battling wins towards the end of the season, the season ended in relegation from the first division. Some of the notable highlights of the year were the reserves playing up for the A team, notably Hugo who put in an excellent performance at Northop to win his men’s doubles (with Duncan) and June Lovell who put a battling performance
at home to Deeside who won her ladies doubles (with Jenni) in a nail biting match 25-23 in the third game. The season for the B Team has to be named the ‘nearly season’, for nearly winning quite a few matches but only winning some and drawing some others! Highs included a good win toward the end of the season against Flint Phoenix - one of the top teams in the division and creditable draws against other top teams, showing what we could have done if we had had a full team all season. A level exams and holidays seemed to take their toll somehow…. It was good to see June Lovell back in competitive badminton after a year out

Badminton Club news and her game improved steadily throughout the season. Special mention to Hugo and Dan Williams who had an excellent season winning most of their games in the men’s doubles. We also saw a number of C Team players such as Mark Pimblett, Luke Givelin and Alabama Berry deputising on a number of occasions
for the B team and showing great improvement and enthusiasm. Looking at how close our matches were this year, can’t help feeling that next season will be ‘our year’ - if only we can field a regular team! The C Team has finished their first season (unfortunately at the bottom of division 3). However they now have a hopeful next season, to be looking forward to, with a seasons experience well under the belt. The C team has achieved its aim - in giving the younger players of the senior club experience within the senior league, and most importantly to enjoy
playing badminton. Each match has seen a different member of the team taking on the role of a captain, in which they organised all aspects of the match. Each captain rose to the challenge with very few hiccoughs. On the 11th April the club held a handicapped tournament, where all players from all teams combined into two groups and were given a handicap as a double pair in order to play games against all. It was a very sociable evening, with the final resulting in Nick Prtak and Hugo Williams (handicap +2) beating Dave Clough and Mel Berry (Handicap -7) 21-16. Thank you to all members who contributed to a very successful evening… the food was great and the atmosphere was incredible. So there we have it…. The club wishes to thank all who have put their time in for free and a lot of effort into making the season tick by so effortlessly. Thanks also to Tom and Moira for photos at the Gareth Coppack Tournament and the handicap tournament at Ruthin LC, and to Claire and Simon for providing round-ups for the A and B teams.

A note from your County Councillor I think that you will have all realised that I had sent my article for the last copy of News and Views in early. By the time you received your copies the spring flowers I had mentioned in my report were covered in two to three feet of snow and in some places even deeper. Within forty eight hours spring had turned to winter with a vengeance and many parts of our ward were cut off from civilisation. My telephone started to ring on the Friday morning and by the following Friday I had received on average ten to twelve calls a day asking for help. These ranged from farmers who could not get feed to their animals, to residents whose roads had not been visited by snow ploughs. In some areas because the lanes were so narrow and the snow so deep, the ploughs were unable to help because there was no where for the ploughed snow to go. Eventually we had to bring in diggers with buckets to drop the snow over the hedges. The police helped to rescue a duty manager from a local hotel after he became cut off on his own, with out heat for over three days and a mountain rescue team came to the assistance of a neighbour in Llanarmon Yn Ial after the ambulance service were unable to get to the village. Welfare teams assessed cases and emergency services were used to get insulin to diabetics and medical supplies to those who needed them. I believe that Denbighshire's highways department rose to the challenge and that their teams along with local contractors did an excellent job under very difficult circumstances. In areas around Llandegla for example, they faced the added problem of trees that had fallen across the roads due to the weight of the snow and these had to be cleared before the snow ploughs could get on with their work. It was also great to see people rallying around to help neighbours and checking on the elderly. The community spirit was fantastic and this was so
true in Llanferres where after a few e-mails thirty people turned up at the church to clear the paths so that a local girl could get to the alter on time. I am also grateful to the Highways Department and one of our local contractors for helping to clear the snow from the road outside the church. It really was a white wedding and I would like to add my best wishes to Michael and Alison and hope that they have a great future together. On a more contentious note, once again we saw people acting irresponsibly by parking on both sides of the A494 trunk road at Loggerheads reducing the width of the road to a single lane. The traffic conditions were already appalling due to the snow and it is amazing that there were no accidents and injuries. I also feel very sorry for the local farmer in Cadole who once again had his fences broken down and rubbish left all over his land by people who supposedly come out to enjoy and appreciate our countryside. I have raised my concerns about the number and the style of the signs that have now appeared along the verges at Loggerheads. I am also still chasing the funding required for the additional parking that is now so badly needed for the country park. This month as your County Councillor, i was asked to join three other members in completing the Chief Executives annual appraisal and I have also been sitting as a member of a forum to review the counties future strategy for economic development. Best wishes for the spring and summer to come. Martyn Cllr Martyn L Holland Tel. 01824 780703 martyn.holland@denbighshire.gov.uk

New Members Needed. The children's playing field has been available for the children of our community for well over ten years. This has only been made possible by the people who volunteer their time to help out, not only with the work parties and fund raising, but also by joining the committee. This may sound like a load of hassle, but there really is not that much to do, other than come to the meetings every few months and join in. The meetings are usually held in the Druid pub and last about an hour. Most of the current members have older children who no longer use the Park, or, in some cases none at all! If we do not get new people to come along and join in, the park and playing field will no longer have a committee and will close. We’re sure there are plenty of parents who use the facility and whose children would not like to see it closed, but we need you to volunteer. The AGM will be announced shortly, so please come along , or contact one of the above. Many Thanks Dan Hurst 810461 on behalf of LPFRA.
Calling Young Mums There are more young families in Llanferres and surrounding area than there have been for some time. As a grandmother I know the value that young mums attach to being able to chat together whilst the children play. It is probable that the village hall is not available for use by a group in a morning – usually the most suitable time to come together – but enquiries are being made. If you support the proposal for a toddler group to be set up, please call me or email me. Daryl Austin, 19 Cae Gwyn Phone no: 01352 810611 Email: daryl.austin4@gmail.com

The Mold Hospital League of Friends and their support group are endeavouring to raise £100,000 as soon as possible. We won the battle to keep open the Minor Injuries and the X-ray Unit at Mold Hospital. We did state during our campaign that if we could retain the services we would be willing to purchase a new X-ray machine. The current one is well over twenty years old. The machine will cost £200,000 and the League of Friends has already set aside £100,000 from its Funds. We are relying on the public to help us raise the remainder. If you would like to donate you can do so in the enclosed envelope and these can be put into the collecting tins at Herbert's Shop in Cadole, Loggerheads Garage and The Druid Inn, Llanferres. On the other hand if you prefer to put cash in the collecting tin there is no problem. If you use the envelope and you are a taxpayer please complete your name and address on the envelope so that we can claim tax back. Thank you for your help. Nature Notes I suppose every bird watcher has a 'bogey' bird, to use the parlance of bird twitchers. A 'bogey' bird is one which the bird watcher has consistently been unable to see despite his/her best endeavours. For me it was the Hawfinch,(which glories in the scientific name of Coccothraustes coccothraustes) until I saw a small flock of them in February 2007 in a small wood just south of Ruthin. So imagine my surprise, and delight, when a pair turned up in our garden on 7th April of this year, feeding on spilt seed below the bird table. They were with other finches, including three Bramblings in full spring plumage, emphasising the size difference. They returned the next day but we have not seen them since. To those not familiar with this bird perhaps a description might help. It is the biggest of our finches being almost the size of a song thrush and is unmistakable. With the male, the overall colour is light brown with the head more orange. There is a black circle round the eye extending to its beak and forming a black bib. The back and side of its neck are grey, while the wings are black with a broad white stripe and narrower stripes of brown and blue. The powerful beak is very short, conical shaped and blue in colour. The female is similar but her colouration is more muted and still cannot be confused with any other bird. Hawfinches are rare in Britain and even when present are very elusive and difficult to see in their natural habitat of broad-leafed woodland, where they spend much of their time in the higher branches. The native birds are mostly sedentary but will move about, usually in small flocks, looking for food, especially in late winter, when their natural food is scarce. They feed primarily on hard seeds such as Haws(from which it probably gets its
name), Cherry, Yew, Beech, Hips, Pine seeds and Hornbeam. They can crack open Cherry stones with their powerful beaks which can exert a force of 30 - 45 kilogram. We do sometimes get a winter influx of birds from mainland Europe but they usually remain on the east coast. However, because we had a male and female, our birds are likely to be a breeding pair. An indication of how hard it has been for sheep to find food, is the amount of bark that they have eaten from some trees, especially Elder, Blackthorn and, to a lesser degree Ash. Some trees are completely stripped of bark up to nearly two metres from the ground. After the snow went, the fields and road banks looked flat and desolate until a patch of bright yellow Coltsfoot lifted the spirits with indications of spring. Chiffchaffs have arrived (we even had one in the garden) and Wheatears are on the moors, and bumblebees are coming out of hibernation but all are about 3/4 weeks later than usual. A pair of Goosanders on a local lake was a welcome sight as I had not seen them there before. Hopefully, they will stay to breed. This is a bird mainly of the north but since 1970 it has extended its breeding range into northern England and Wales. In the pond, life is evident - frogs are spawning and I have seen water diving beetles, shrimps, water 'fleas', water slaters(aquatic wood lice), leaches, whirligig beetles, backswimmers and, surprisingly, newt tadpoles. The latter were about three centimetres long and had their legs, so were well developed. It is too early for them to be this year's hatching, so these must have overwintered in the pond from last year when their development was probably delayed by the cool summer weather. John Almond

Local News Llanferres in the Great War Next month I will publish the first of my accounts of men from the village who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914 - 1918 Private John William Cordiner was killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 aged just 21. I am indebted (in advance) for the kind help and assistance of Michael and Meirion Cordiner with their family history, and also Geoff Crump, chief curator at the Cheshire Military Museum in Chester Hopefully, I will be able to tell the stories of some of the seven other soldiers over the next few months, and would be grateful to hear from any of the relatives or anyone with any information on:Private Charles Williams - Royal Welch Fusiliers Private William Arthur Williams - Royal Welch Fusiliers Private Frederick Reynold Roberts - Royal Welch Fusiliers Private Edwin Edwards - Cheshire Regiment Private Benjamin (?) Peters - Royal Welch Fusiliers Serjeant Walter Augustus Fernyhough - Loyal North Lancs Private David Woodward - Royal Welch Fusiliers Following negotiations with Llanferres Community Council, I am hoping that the commemoration stone will be re-etched with the names of those killed in the two world wars and other conflicts, in time for the 100th anniversary on the 11th November 2014. My knowledge of the Second World War is not great so I would appreciate any details of names of those lost then or in later conflicts that anyone might know of to add to the stone.
