Welcome Welcome to the May edition of News & Views. And firstly, a big thank you to Aunty She for this month’s front page photograph. May looks to be a fun month ahead with the inaugural village beer festival on the 20th to look forward to, as well as the bingo on Friday 5th. It’s hard to believe, but Sam and Roy are celebrating a year at the Druid this month and they have a special celebratory event too on May 20th. And don’t forget to vote for your choice for county councillor on May 4th. As they say, “All good things come to an end”, and we’ve decided that applies to our stint producing News & Views too. After more than 8 years we’re hanging up our keyboards

and looking to pass on the baton, to thoroughly mix metaphors. So, if you’ve had a yearning to get involved with News & Views - now’s the time to shout. The lease on the current News & Views printer expires in September, so the September issue will be our last one. The magazine is on a good financial footing now and in good shape for someone else to take over. So if you fancy a go - give us call or email us, and we can give you a bit more detail of what’s involved currently. Indeed, you may have your own ideas of how to do it differently. Either way, please do get in touch. Best Wishes Paul & Siobhan Tel: (01352) 810668 Email: news@llanferres.org

Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club To most of us the name Chester conjures up “The Cathedral”, “The Walls”, Boat Trips and shopping. At our April meeting David Cummings opened our eyes to the citizens of Chester who, each year, keep history alive. Professionals and Amateurs re-enact early events such as the Easter story (a local donkey appears too) and Roman Legions marching through the streets in full armour! Present day attractions are thriving too - the open air theatre, horse racing, the Zoo, the Waterways Festival and the Festival of Lights plus Islands of the World. On May 9th Rachel Jones will talk about work in the Country Park at Loggerheads. Please join us at 2.00pm

Crown Green Bowls Cilcain Crown Green Bowls Club would welcome new members, with or without experience, to participate socially or competitively. LLANFERRES PARISH GARDENING CLUB The meeting held on Monday April 10th had Amy Green of the North Wales Wildlife Trust as its guest speaker. In a most informative talk, Amy talked of her involvement in the "Living Landscape" Rivers Alun and Chwiler. This project is basically to improve the river quality, with plant and tree growing to encourage and provide habitats for birds and endangered species such as the dormouse and water vole. Amy also spoke of her involvement with local farmers and landowners to help her with the project. Due consideration is needed for their livestock and land, but in most cases, this help is forthcoming. The questions afterwards showed members were in tune with the work Amy and her colleagues were doing. Show Secretary, Ivy Watts, now had final classes to hand and the schedule would be printed shortly. Our next meeting will be on Monday May 8th when Kevin Pratt will give an illustrated talk entitled "The Private Plants and Gardens of Cheshire" a rare look at gardens you CANNOT visit. As usual new members and visitors are always welcome. Annual Subscription £5.00 Casual Visit to one meeting £1.00 Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond ℡ 01352 810808

Road and this area is confirmed as being in Flintshire. The Country Council, upon receiving the complaint that the street lighting in the area was too bright, has assessed the situation and is going to reduce them to 60% in the area (Rectory Lane, Cae Gwyn and Cae Derwen). Cllr Holland has raised with the Country, the diversion problems caused following the fatal accident on the Loggerheads Road recently. The speed of the traffic on this road has also been raised. The Welsh Government are looking at the issues. The stone plinth holding the village sign in Maeshafn is damaged. The mast erected opposite the Druids has been confirmed to be for light control in the area. The erection of sheds in Big Covert is now forbidden and most have been removed. For the buildings that are left, the Enforcement Team will take action. Cllr Holland had been asked for another Dog Fouling Bin to be placed on the Old Road in Tafarn-y-Gelyn. As there was already a bin near the Bus Stop it was felt that a sign should suffice. The Tourism sign (Flintshire) in Maeshafn has been broken and is lying at the bottom of the post. The Flintshire Authority will be alerted. The Recreation area 'Clean Up' was very successful last Saturday and a great many logs were created and moved. Many thanks to all who participated. The Chairman thanked Cllr Holland for his comprehensive report and wished him all the best In the future.

Reports from Other Meetings - The outcome of the nominations for reelection for the Community Council was very poor. Only five nominations were received and all candidates have been elected unopposed. It leaves four vacancies however and this will be addressed through cooption. If this is not successful, then an election will be called. Posters and notification notice will be put in News & Views as soon as possible. Maintenance in the Community Maeshafn play area. Maes Ysgawen- Community Open Space - hedgerow trimming /coppicing will be carried out in the Autumn. A foot needs cutting and trimming off the bottom hedgerow. New Vicar We are looking forward to welcoming the new vicar for the Bro Famau group of churches, Rev Daniel Stroud who will be arriving with his family at the end of May. Church Congregational meeting The annual Congregational meeting (previously known as the Vestry Meeting) was held on Saturday March 18th and was preceded by a Church Committee meeting (previously known as a PCC meeting). The churchwardens presented their report thanking everyone for their work during the year and listing the work done to the church (upgraded lighting) and the repairs still to be done (bell tower / windows). The treasurer presented the accounts which showed virtually a break even position. However it was noted that 2017 will be a difficult year with the necessary repairs as above. A copy of the new Mold Mission Area structure is to be displayed on the church noticeboards. Christian Aid Christian Aid Week is 14th to 20th May. Christian Aid is a Christian organisation that seeks to tackle poverty around the world. There will be a donation tin at the back of church, in the Druid and in Loggerheads Garage for anyone who wants to make a donation to this worthwhile cause. Gift Aid Our church relies on donations for it's upkeep and needs everyone's support. Through the HMRC Gift Aid Small Donations scheme (GASDS) we are able to claim gift aid relief, at 25% on all collection cash plate donations, up to £20 in value, per donation and also on all money given in church such as the donations to light a candle in memory of a loved one and in fixed collection boxes. This means that every £1 donated is worth £1.25 to the church. Churchyard bins Regrettably the situation has not improved, despite numerous appeals, with plastic wrappings in the recycling bins still and flowers in the general waste. Wreathes are a particular issue with no less than seven removed from one bin alone in less than a week. Notices will be placed on all bins in the next few weeks asking for a bit more discipline. Flintshire Foodbank Anyone who wants to donate items to the Foodbank can leave them in the donation box at the back of church. Open Church The church is once again open daily during daylight hours for all who want to visit our beautiful church or come for a quiet moment of reflection. Please also join us for our regular service on Sundays at 9.30am.

SHARE UPDATE – MAY

SHARE recently received an urgent request from one of our volunteer contacts in Myrsini for new underwear for men, women and children. We were also asked if we could source some costume jewellery and handbags!

Myrsini-jewellery&handbags

Whilst this initially seemed a strange request to some of our volunteers, the reason was quite simple – the women & girls now living in the refugee camps just want to feel ‘normal’ again and are simply fed-up ‘looking like a refugee’. It took no time at all for our volunteers to sort out and send some lovely pieces of jewellery and handbags from our Pre-Loved Saleroom in Mold – all items that have been donated to SHARE over the past few months. In response to the dreadful chemical attacks in Syria during April, SHARE also pledged £1000 to an emergency appeal launched by UK Action for Refugees in partnership with Syria Relief. This will be spent on protective chemical grade ‘Hazmat Suits’, enabling medical staff to safely treat the victims of these horrific attacks. As the seasons start to change and the weather warms up, so too do the clothing & equipment needs of those refugees currently living in the camps. We are now therefore collecting SUMMER clothing – but no ‘extra-large’ sizes please! ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Sun hats - children Shorts - men and children Short-sleeve T-shirts - men and children Summer trousers – men, women and children Lightweight, long sleeve T-shirts – men, women and children Long sleeve tunics - women Leggings - women and girls New underwear – women (black only), men & children (any colour) Flip flops – all sizes, men, women and children Sunscreen lotion Mosquito repellent & Mosquito bite relief cream Lice lotion

If you would like to donate or volunteer for SHARE in Mold, we are open from Mon-Thurs 9.30am-2.00pm and Wed evening 6.30pm-8.30pm.

Bowls News On April 21st, the Llanferres Village Bowls team – members of the Clwyd Vale Indoor Bowling Alliance – played, for the first time, in the final of the Nine-a-Side Singles Competition. The final was held at Henllan Village Hall, where we played against a team from Pwllglas. The teams were fairly well matched for the first four games with the score standing at two games each. Llanferres then pulled ahead - winning the next four games in succession to take an unbeatable lead, with the match finishing at 6 – 3 for Llanferres. Following the shield and medal presentations, a light supper was served and we were able to relax and enjoy our win. This year, the club also did very well in the Doubles competition, reaching the

semi-finals, where we were knocked out by the eventual winners Llannefydd. The club will continue to play bowls in the village hall every Tuesday evening at 7.00pm. Please come along and join us – everyone is welcome to have a go…..and who knows? You might even make the team next year!!

24 News & Views POINTS RAISED AT CARNIVAL PLANNING MEETING HELD AT DRUID INN ON FRIDAY 7TH APRIL 2017. TO-DAY WE LAID TO REST A VILLAGE CHARACTER AND FRIEND. BILLY WILL BE MISSED FOR MANY REASONS AND BY MANY PEOPLE. This meeting was originally called to finalise plans for the forthcoming BINGO night on Friday 5th May, but due to apologies sent from key planners, a further meeting will be called. This has since been held and all is in hand. We have received some fabulous and valuable prizes!! Thanks go to SHIV and PAUL for the most generous donation of £100 towards funds – this sets the ball rolling!! A sub bank account has been set up, connected to Village Hall account, for funds/donations to be paid into. There was a lively and useful discussion. The main points being :a. The Carnival will be a BIG Fun-filled day with no charge for admission. b. Funding will be sought – to support not only the day but, upgrading of kitchen, toilet areas and disabled facilities. c. Consideration needs to be given to a celebrity to open and crown the queen. Also a compere for the day. d. It is now really important that all local clubs/groups nominate a spokesperson and state what stall/game/activity they will undertake. Sheila will contact and request each nominee attend the next meeting. e. An idea to create a fund raising WebPage connected to Facebook will be developed. This will raise awareness nation wide and reach past residents. THERE HAS BEEN MUCH TIME AND INTEREST INVESTED BY A DEDICATED FEW –AND FOR THIS I AM EXTREMELY GRATEFUL. BUT IT IS NOW NECESSARY FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO BE MADE KNOWN. IT IS NO LONGER ENOUGH TO PLEDGE SUPPORT OR ENQUIRE HOW PLANS ARE GOING WHEN YOU SEE ME AT THE

Messy Chu r ch

This month the Easter themed Messy Church had a good turnout given the change of date. We made biscuits into a tomb with grass and a stone, made Easter egg bags, had a treasure hunt to make a donkey, Lego, Playdoh and palm leaves all looking a Jesus' journey to the cross. We had a short worship with new songs and shared a lovely meal with home made hot crossed buns and cakes. The next Messy Church will be back on the 3rd Sunday of the month which is 21st May at 4pm in Gwernaffield village hall. We also have a Facebook page called Messy Church Brofamau

HE DID IT!!

Well d one Steve !

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to all those people who are reading this and kindly donated to my Just Giving Page for the London Marathon run I did on Sunday on behalf of Claire House Children’s Hospice on the Wirral. As you will see from the photo I still had a smile on my face by the end of what was probably one of the best – if not the best thing - I have ever done in my life! I achieved my objective of finishing ahead of the lorry that collects the cones at the end and finished in 7 hours and 2 minutes. The messages of support I received from people has taken me back , and both myself and more importantly the kids and their parents at the Hospice are eternally grateful. There were so many memories from the day and all kinds of emotions – turning the corner at several points on the course to see Suzanne , Becky , Emma and friends cheering us on , helping people who couldn’t make it any further on the course , sharing jelly babies with strangers , running for a pee in the church (with the permission of the vicar!) only to be met with a flight of stairs for the pleasure – at mile 20! , seeing the London fire brigade rush out and spray their hoses on us as it did get very warm and seeing the whole of London basically in party mode. There was literally a party on every street corner and outside every pub and to hear your name shouted for 26.2 miles is something I will never forget. Most importantly the money you helped me raise will provide much needed care and respite for

terminally ill children and their families and Claire House have told me they are overwhelmed with the money the 10 of us who ran for them have raised. Thank you so much, Steve Clarke. Ps…..The funniest moment arrived towards the end of the race when we realised we were about to be overtaken by none other than Mr . Blobby…it’s amazing what energy reserves you can find when threatened with this ultimate humiliation!! You can help STEVE CLARKE raise money for this great cause by donating directly to their fundraising page https://goo.gl/5Twwdz JustGiving sends your donation straight to Claire House Children's Hospice and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.

A note from your County Councillor I hope that everyone has had a great Easter Break and that you are now looking forward to the summer. This morning I saw the first swallows of the year when I visited a resident along the Forestry Road. They are very early and I just hope that the weather does not turn cold again for their sake. One of the problems with taking part in an election at this time of year is that your garden does not get he attention it needs. Spring is here and everything is starting to grow especially my lawns. I have been asked by a number of residents if I know of anyone who is a keen gardener as they are looking for someone to garden for them on a regular basis. Please let me know if you are looking for this type of work and I will pass your name on. When the highways agency agreed to restrict parking on the A494 through Loggerheads we asked them to consider reducing the speed limit to 30mph at the same time. Their response then was a definite no. Once again I have received a number of requests from residents in the area to reduce the speed limit and through our Assembly Member Darren Millar I have asked the Welsh Government to revisit the limit and reduce it again to 30 mph. With the Colomendy school, Loggerheads Country Park, the Loggerheads Pub, the Petrol Station and Spar Shop speeding traffic can be dangerous for visitors, children and

customers alike. After pulling out of the Petrol station on to what I thought was a clear road, I have personally experienced cars travelling in excess of 50 mph. Loggerheads Country Park has over 200,000 visitors a year and the Colomendy School has thousands of children visiting their outdoor centre. We have had a number of road accidents on this stretch of road over the last few weeks and the most recent one involved a school bus and a car. A reduction in the speed limit is therefore now imperative. As the date for nominations for our local community councils closed it became obvious that a number of community councils in Denbighshire did not have a full complement of candidates. Many candidates have therefore been returned unopposed and many Community Councils still have a number of positions unfilled. Sadly this also applies to Llanferres Community Council and the new council will be looking for people to fill at least four vacant seats. Further details as to how these vacancies will be filled will be published by the Community Council in due course. On May 6th the now annual three taverns and choirs event will take place. The number of choirs taking part has now increased to seven with music for all tastes. If you enjoy a good pint, good company and excellent singing why not visit the Raven, Sun or Rose and Crown on the afternoon of May 6th. Do not forget the annual Loggerheads Beer Fest on the 2nd, 3rd

Local News Telephone Kiosks and 4th of June. Again plenty to drink, good music and craft stalls in the park. Following a successful workshop in A good day out for all the family. Many of the street lights in the village will now be revisited and the lamps replaced to reduce the light effecting people's homes and their pleasure of the local dark skies. Work should commence from the 24th April. There has been some damage to the stone work around the village signs in Maeshafn. I have asked if the community council can repair these before they get any worse. The Community Council has also agreed to paint white lines on the edges of the steps that lead down from Cae Gwyn to the A494. This is more of an issue now that the light from the street lamps is to be reduced.

the Village Hall, the content of the information to be placed in the K6 Kiosks is now determined. To enhance and introduce colour, it is planned to ask the school children to contribute their thoughts and to include some of the photographs of a bygone age for historical content. Do you have any old photographs of Tafarn-yGelyn or Maeshafn (especially the Engine House in the Quarry). If you have, these can be scanned and the originals will be returned to their owners. If you can help, please contact the Clerk to the Community Council. Contact details on page 37. Thank you.

Best wishes, Martyn

Dog Walkers - is this you? We know who you are - we just need to prove it You are the inconsiderate, selfish and irresponsible local "dog owner" who has been throwing your dog mess (at least 2x) over the hedge just below the bus stop on the main road towards Mold - and probably doing this elsewhere on your walk as well. You have until Fri 12th May to collect your black plastic bagged mess from my garden - you can contact me on 07711 104490 to arrange. If you don't then your dog mess (bagged - thank you) will be sent away for DNA testing to identify your dog - and thereby identify you! The cost - that you will end up paying - is £65 - for each of the 2 bags you threw over the hedge. See this link for how DNA testing works https://www.easydna.co.uk/dog-poop-dna-testing/ When the evidence is received, it will be sent, along with the already taken photographs from the garden, to Denbighshire County Council for your prosecution (see this link https://www.denbighshire.gov.uk/en/resident/pests-pollution-and-foodhygiene/dog-issues.aspx ) You will be subject to "at least" a £75 fine - potentially twice because I have at least 2 dog mess bags that may belong to you. So it’s your choice - either end up paying £75 + £65 = £130 once or twice (= £260) (noting this could be 2 different inconsiderate and selfish dog owners!) ... OR collect, apologise, pledge never to litter again .... and thereby avoid the public shame that could Indoor Bowls follow if you don't. S. Thomas

The Boundary Stone Plaque Readers will recall that the parish boundary stone known as Carreg Carn March Arthur lies beside the A494 between Loggerheads and Cadole. The plaque mounted above it on a boundary pile records the outcome of the famous mineral dispute between the Lords of Mold and the Grosvenor family (the Duke of Westminster's ancestors) in the eighteenth century. The Stone underneath this Arch CARREG CARN MARCH ARTHUR was Adjudged to be the Boundary of the Parish and Lordship of Mold in the County of Flint and of Llanferras in the County of Denbigh by the High Court of Exchequer at Westminster 10th November 1763 The plaque has had a chequered history following its original installation after the Court decision in 1763. The sandstone used proved to be prone to weathering and by 1908 it was reported that the central portion of the inscription was totally illegible. All that was left were a few letters on either side. The Crosville Motor Company purchased land at Loggerheads in 1926. The Company was keen to improve and develop the environment around what was to be a country park. By then further deterioration of the inscription had occurred. One of the Company's first actions was to determine the wording of the original inscription and then to have the plaque recut (in 1928). At the same

time the two side panels were recut as well (these carried the inscriptions Mold Lordship and Llanferras Lordship respectively). The next disturbance came in 1973 when the A494 was re-aligned and improved. This necessitated the demolition and subsequent rebuilding of the boundary pile at its present position. The height of the rebuilt monument is apparently less than that of the original. However, the plaque continued to suffer the ravages of weathering. An examination in 1988 revealed that the plaque was extremely eroded. The Castle Cement Company, the owners of the nearby Cefn Mawr limestone quarry, provided a new plaque. It was unveiled in a formal ceremony by the chairman of Clwyd County Council in 1992. Slate was used for the new plaque in the hope that it would be more resistant to weathering. Subsequently the boundary pile showed signs of cracking in the stonework so the plaque was removed in 2014 in order to allow remedial work to be done. This was completed and the plaque has at long last been replaced. The original weathered sandstone plaque is stored at the Loggerheads Country Park.
