Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on April 9th had as guest speaker George Pilkington, ecologist , environmentalist and researcher - the study of Bumblebees being his forte. In his introduction he explained pollination by bees was not only important for our food supplies but also berries for wildlife - birds in particular. In quite an explicit talk he gave a great insight to Bumblebees nesting sites and conditions, how we need to have pollen and nectar plants in the garden from February onwards - eg Grape Hyacinths, Crocus etc. Then the biggest problem - pests such as Bee-flies and Wax Moths. With graphic film of these problems it was truly a call for help on behalf of Bumblebees. Our next meeting will be on May 14th when June Allison from Mayfield Plants will talk on "Making the most of your Garden Space". There will be plants for sale. New members or casual visitors (ÂŁ1 per visit) always welcome

It might be worth giving them an opportunity to quote when you renew? This offer is open to all the Congregation. Details as follows:- www.ecclesiastical.com/Trust130 or ring 0800 783 0130 quoting TRUST 130. Church Bins The church green recycling bins have recently been emptied and contained a lot of broken ceramics and glass / plastic flower wrappings and wreaths, none of which are recyclable and some quite dangerous. Please use the green bins only for flowers and other degradable matter. If you cannot take rubbish home please use the bins to the right of the church door. It is only a few yards' walk and on the way out of the church yard anyway. The churchyard has also been used for dumping of garden waste (non varietal trees to the church grounds). Repairs to church Repairs have been completed to two sections of guttering and (again) to the outside tap. Congregational Meeting The annual Congregational (Vestry) meeting was held in church on the 5th of April. The treasurer reported a deficit last year of circa ÂŁ2,500, the third consecutive year of deficits, and that urgent remedial actions are required with structural repairs needed on the church this year. Church Opening The church is now open during daylight hours for anyone to visit. Flintshire Foodbank Anyone who wants to donate items to the Foodbank can leave them in the donation box at the back of church. Thanks to everyone's donations we have already been able to make two donations this year.

Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres CYNGOR Y CYMUNED - LLANFERRES COMMUNITY COUNCIL Minutes of the GENERAL MEETING Held Thursday 12th April 2018 Present:Cllr. Michael Cordiner (Chair), Cllr's Bob Barton, Isla Watts, Amanda Curtis, Ivy Watts, Allan Morgans, Rob Jones and the Clerk, Mrs. G Dillon. There were Members of the public present and the County Councillor Martyn Holland. Apologies: Cllr's John Almond, Jac Armstrong. The Community Councillors wished Cllr Almond a speedy recovery. Meeting Open to the Public - there have been incidences of fly-tipping in the community, at Cadole where a number of slates/tiles were deposited at the edge of the highway and in the Churchyard (this has now been cleared). It was requested that the Community Council would support the placement of a wooden fence panel (alongside a resident's fence) to complete the overall look near the Turning Circle at Cae Derwen. The Carnival Committee issued an apology for not obtaining permission to carry out a 'tidy-up' in Maes Ysgawen. Concerns were expressed that the rabbit guards had been removed from around the trees in the Park, they were discarded into the grassed areas, causing problems with the motor mower. No permission was given for their removal and they are to be put back around the trees to prevent the damage caused by rabbits. This is essential to safeguard the fruit trees which we were in danger of losing. Mr. Hugo Watts has kindly offered to provide additional guards to replace those that were damaged. The Community Council have given permission for a 'clean-up' of the dog fouling which is taking place in the Park. The fallen tree is to be cut up and plans made for a 'Bug Hotel' to be situated in that area.

Permission is being sought to place a temporary skip in the vicinity of the 'affordable housing' site near the Church. This needs to be pursued through the landowner. Could the Community Council provide a hand gritter for the Village? Deferred until May. *Agenda Item for May Meeting. Declarations of Interest - the Clerk read out the Declaration of Interest information. Declarations of Interest - none reported. Minutes of the Meeting Held 8th March 2018 - these were accepted as a true record and signed by the Chairman subject to the following amendment: Item 15a Planning Matters - '16 Bryn Artro should read 12 Bryn Artro'. Matters Arising - a weight limit sign on both Tyn Llan and Cae Gwyn? Cllr Holland was happy to pursue this item - no update. a) Cllr Barton asked that the matter of Planning on 21/2018/0166 12 Bryn Artro, be redefined due to 'raised concerns regarding the accuracy of the submitted plans. Officers have checked the plans against the Council's mapping system and consider the plans to be accurate. For the avoidance of doubt, measurements referred to in the report have been measured against the submitted plans and the Council's mapping system'. Cllr Barton will clarify in an email to the Clerk. Cllr Barton was to attend the Planning Committee as an individual. County Councillors Report - Cllr Holland offered the following Report prior to the Meeting. 1) Local Government reorganisation is back on the table in Wales with the Welsh Government pressing to reduce the number of County Councils from the current twenty-two to ten. The local proposal is to once again merge Denbighshire with Conwy. 2) I was very sorry to hear the sad news of Dolly Collins death. Local News ●Anything is possible..…some of the people I have encountered whilst running have been truly inspirational – blind people , mentally and physically handicapped people, very young and even older than me. The oldest I ran with was 85 and the most heart - warming was a couple I ran with last month in Liverpool, who were both 80 plus running with their severely autistic 50 year old son who was on his 20th marathon. We were queuing for the toilet half way round and they brought me to tears. They ran with him constantly because… when he ran he smiled.... Simple! ●I have run with some great characters….one of the funniest being Speedo Mick…an Evertonian who runs in blue speedos whatever the weather for Prostate Cancer charities. ●Without getting too political…there is something wrong with the way the NHS is funded and money is spent when hospices have to rely on volunteers to fund essential services. ●The time you run doesn’t matter. It’s you against yourself and the elements. Just make sure you finish ahead of the runners in fancy dress (we nearly lost to Mr Blobby in London) and the lorry that collects the cones at the end of the race. ●Training around Llanferres in the hills reminded me how lovely a place we live in…..but there is still too much dog dirt left, not only in dog poo alley but elsewhere by irresponsible dog owners. So to add to those recent voices in News and Views and to those of you that leave your dog’s mess for runners, riders and walkers to cope with …TAKE THE BLOODY STUFF HOME WITH YOU and STOP BEING SO SELFISH!..end of rant!
So that chapter of challenges ends and a new one opens….the money is still needed. Thank you again and for those who would still like to donate having read this it is still not too late!!! - https://www.justgiving.com/STEVE-CLARKE20. Steve (and Emma) Clarke.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ At last the long drawn out winter has been replaced by a colourful spring, with masses of lesser celandine, primroses, wood anemone and forget-me-nots to brighten any walk. Soon we will have the bluebells, wild garlic and early purple orchids. My favourite time of the year.
Changes in land use, the huge increase in predators, both on the ground and in the air. The Curlew, Lapwing and Partridge have gone from the area. I have seen a good number of Curlews overwintering on the wet Bodafon fields at Llandudno. They will by now have moved up to the moorland to nest.
Since writing about rooks in last month’s News and Views, I've had a On a brighter note, some Swallows and number of phone calls from interested Martins are back in the area plus readers, saying how intelligent the crow Redstart and Spotted fly catcher. While sitting on one of the More next time, donated seats on Llandudno promenade, I was joined by a rather bedraggled Eddie Eddie Wilde 01352 810271 jackdaw, who did it's best to communicate with me. I was amazed at the number of different sounds it was capable of making. I was very tempted to share my sandwich with it, but knew that would result in being mobbed by seagulls. Last month’s page 'Welsh Curlews need your help' about the decline in Curlew numbers, took my interest. The Curlew is just one of many of our bird species in danger of becoming extinct, mostly ground nesting birds. When I first moved to Maeshafn, Curlews nested alongside Lapwings on a wet area next to the Youth Hostel, their long legged young could be seen running along the grass verges which are now gone. This must be a country wide problem as Paul O' Grady wrote about the same thing in his book 'A Country Living'. What were good grass verges, are just deep muddy tyre tracks. A note from your County Councillor I would like to thank everyone for their e-mails and telephone messages after my mother fell and broke her hip on Mothering Sunday. I am pleased to say that she is now home but it will be a long and slow process to get her back to her old self and fully mobile. In last month’s edition of News and Views I mentioned that the reorganisation of Welsh Local Government had not gone away with pressure being put on local authorities to work together when it comes to the next LDP ( Local Development Plans). Well it is now official that Local Government reorganisation is back on the table with the Welsh Government pressing to reduce the number of County Councils from the current twenty two to ten. The local proposal is to once again merge Denbighshire with Conwy. There is still not a lot of appetite for these changes especially because the additional work to complete these mergers will come at a heavy cost when our budgets are still being cut by Welsh Government. Perhaps there will be a sweetener, no cuts if we all agree to merge!! I have been chasing the Trunk Roads Agency on a number of issues. Firstly to honour their commitment to install the promised speed reduction measures between Loggerheads and Tafarn Y Gelyn. Secondly to reduce the height of the hedges at the Ruthin /Llanarmon Yn Ial junction to improve visibility and finally to remove the debris on the side of the A494 by the Tafarn Y Gelyn
junction. Hopefully I will have something positive to report on all these issues in the next copy of News and Views. I recently attended a meeting between Countryside Services and Gareth Jaggard, who was representing the local runners club. The club have very generously agreed to donate ÂŁ800 towards the cost of a new defibrillator which will be placed on the external wall of the public toilets at the Moel Famau car park. Countryside Services have agreed to match this sum of money and will cover the cost of the installation. On behalf of the Community I would like to thank Gareth and his committee for their generosity and their support for our area. With the completion of this installation it will mean that our ward is one of the best for defibrillator coverage in the County with units now in Llanferres, Maeshafn, Loggerheads, Moel Famau, Eryrys, Graianrhyd, Llanarmon Yn Ial and Llandegla. Again my thanks go to the three Community Councils, the volunteers who have raised vital funds and the generous benefactors who have given their financial support often in memory of family members. There have been a number of thefts and break ins reported in the area and sadly I have to report that Caffi Florence and the Loggerheads Country Park buildings have also targeted. A quad bike and sit on mower were recovered from a local field in Llanarmon after the thieves were possibly disturbed and tools were also stolen in Llanarmon Yn Ial and from a van in Llandegla. Please report anything unusual to the Police.

A note from your County Councillor After the last lot of snow I spent two hours one Sunday afternoon with a Community Spirited gentleman from Mold, John Cranwell, clearing the field in Cadole of rubbish after the winter sledging. We removed over twenty broken sledges and a dozen sacks of various items discarded by people who have supposedly come to enjoy our beautiful countryside. We also picked up huge quantities of small sharp fragments of broken ridged plastic which if ingested by farm animals could have killed them. The county did respond to our request to enforce the no parking in the Loggerheads area and on the Saturday prior to the last snow fall a team of council staff cleaned all the no parking signs to ensure there could be no disputes over the parking restrictions. I was invited to attend the March meeting of the Gwernymynydd Community Council where I was made very welcome and where I explained what DCC would do to enforce the no parking in Cadole. The roads repair and resurfacing programme has been in part agreed for this coming year. The good news is that the county will commence resurfacing the B5430 from the Valley Lodge junction to Graianrhyd through May and June. The Welsh Government have also now given Denbighshire a further 1.2 million pounds towards our roads and this budget has yet to be allocated. I have put in a plea for Bryn Alyn and two other small roads in the ward. Watch this space. I was very sorry to hear the sad news of Dolly Collins death. I had known Dolly for many years when in my mis
spent youth I played pool on a Friday night in the Druid Inn and Dolly kept us all in order. The fact she was held in high esteem was evident at her funeral where many people had to stand outside because the church was so full. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Finally, did you know that there are now outreach Post Office Services available in the Llandegla Community Shop every Thursday morning between 9.15 and 11.15. In the Raven Inn every Thursday lunch time between 12.00 and 2.00 and in Eryrys at the Canolfan Dewi Sant every Thursday afternoon between 2.30 and 4.30. By supporting our local Post Office services you will help us to keep them. Best wishes, Martyn

Ice Houses Before the advent of refrigerators keeping perishable foods for any lengthy period of time was difficult. Only the wealthier members of society had sufficient resources to construct and maintain a cold store facility. These were known as ice houses as they used ice as a coolant. The ice would be covered with insulation such as straw or sawdust and sacking. Packed ice has a relatively small surface area which slows down the rate of thawing with the result that the ice could remain for most of the year. The ice would be sourced from a local water supply such as a lake or pond during the winter. The classic design of an icehouse was a cylindrical brick built building with a domed roof. The building was usually below ground level to provide further insulation to slow down the rate of melting of the ice. The largest one that I have seen in north Wales is at Bodelwyddan Castle between St Asaph and Abergele. Surprisingly this structure has not been Listed by Cadw as being worthy of protection. However, this is not unusual as a number of others are not listed either. Ice Houses that have been Listed, all as Grade II, include those at Leeswood Hall, Plas Teg, Rhual, Llewesog Hall, Mostyn Hall and Hawarden Old Rectory. A variant on ice house design is a structure in the form of a short buried passageway. This has no doubt given rise to speculation in the past about secret underground passages associated with large old houses. Adjacent to Aberduna Hall and Aberduna Farm is a buried tunnelshaped stone lined structure aligned roughly north-south. This was possibly
used as an ice house in the past by the occupants of Aberduna Hall. The Hall is known to have been used as a shooting lodge in the nineteenth century. The tunnel is 2m high, 1.9m wide and 5.5m long. There is an access doorway at the northern end and a bricked up aperture at the highest point at the southern end. There were two possible sources of ice: the Aberduna duck pond and the meadow to the south-east of Aberduna Hall which used to flood regularly. It is clear that the structure at Aberduna has subsequently been used for other purposes. However we have no clear evidence one way or the other about its original purpose. Which raises the further question did the nearby Colomendy Hall have an ice house? There are cellars under the Hall with access through a ground level aperture similar to that of the Aberduna structure. They may have been used for that purpose; but again we have no definite evidence.
