Community Council News - March Meeting Llanferres Community Council Meeting March 10th 2011 Apologies: Cllr Yvonne Foden- McCorry Ysgol Bro Famau Governing Bodyupdate Cllr Martin Holland (Llanarmon yn Ial ) ,who is currently Deputy Chairman of the Governing Body and Chairman of the Finance Committee. Cllr Holland delivered a very positive report. The pupil numbers are on the increase. Currently a total of 91, of whom 76 are full time and 15 are nursery or pre-nursery. There are 34 pupils at the Llanferres site and 57 pupils at Llanarmon yn Ial. While the school budget was reduced by £1400 the increase in pupil numbers will produce positive financial results when the new headcount is taken later in the year. The reduction in staffing from last September has helped to produce a projection of greater financial stability for the next three years. Valuable financial contributions are being made by the PTFA which include the 100 Club and the blue bag collections. The provision and funding of music lessons are under consideration. The Chairman thanked Cllr Holland for his report. Meeting open to the Public There were no matters raised.

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our meeting held on Monday 14th March had, after the business section, Amanda Williams as guest speaker - her topic "Bumblebees". As well as members we welcomed 4 guests to hear this fascinating talk. Accompanied by an excellent range of slides, Amanda talked of the different species, their life cycle and the predicament they face to survive. As gardeners we were encouraged to help them survive by changing planting schemes and by planting some of the best wild flower species to provide nectar and pollen. Also it was pointed out that many pesticide sprays are not selective as to which insects are killed - so bees can be victims too. Members were inspired by Amanda's enthusiasm to try to "do their bit" to protect and save this very useful but endangered species. At our next meeting on Monday 11th April Idris Evans will give a talk entitled "Cattle Drovers of Wales". As always, visitors and new members will be most welcome. Monthly recipe sponsored by CAFFI FLORENCE NETTLE RISOTTO We are currently planning for our Food from the Wild workshop and one of the recipes we love to do is a risotto using wild nettles. This is the perfect time of year to cook with nettles as they are young and tender. They are very nutritious and tasty. Use rubber gloves to collect them and only use the young growing tips. Large bowl of nettle shoots ( top 4/5 leaves) 200g risotto rice 1 large onion 1 clove garlic 75g butter 1 litre vegetable stock Parmesan cheese Chives (optional) Rinse the leaves and blanch for 2 minutes in a pan of boiling water. Squeeze water from leaves and chop finely. Heat stock until almost boiling. Melt 50g butter in large saucepan and sweat finely chopped onion and garlic until soft but not brown. Add rice and mix well until rice is coated with butter. Add 1/3 stock and bring to gentle simmer and cook until stock has been absorbed. Add nettles and a little more stock. Add a ladle of stock and cook until absorbed. Continue this process of adding stock until rice is cooked. Add the final 25g butter, grated parmesan, chives and season to taste.

Llanferres Over 60s At the March meeting we had an exceptionally good talk by Helen Evans from WAGTAIL U.K. who had two "sniffer" dogs with her. She explained how the dogs are trained and the work they do with various organisations and government departments like Police, M.O.D., Immigration, Airports etc as well as private companies. We then had a demonstration with "Patch"and his friend finding a tiny bit of "a drug" hidden behind the piano We all fell in love with the dogs who were so lively and friendly, but when their working harnesses were put on became so serious and controlled. The next meeting is on April 12th in the Village Hall at 2.00pm when our friend Mr Bruce Parkin is bringing a collection of Paper weights to talk about. VALE OF CLWYD CLASSIC 3RD SEPTEMBER 2011 After over 40 years of organising motorsport events Clwyd Vale Motor Club are now proposing to run the inaugural Vale of Clwyd Classic sponsored by Jonathan Turner of AGS Security Systems. Cars entered on this event will be mainly from the 1950s and 1960s, including many of the famous makes of those years, such as Triumph, MG, Porsche, Jaguar, Mini Cooper and Austin Healey. We also hope there will also be some Vintage cars. The event consists of a tour of the Vale and surrounding area set at an average speed of less than 28mph, linking locations of special interest. At these locations the crews face a variety of manoeuvrability and driving skill tests. Scrutineering of the cars will take place on Friday evening at Loggerheads garage and the cars will be able to be viewed at the Druid from 6 pm – 8 pm. The cars will be leaving The Druid Inn, Llanferres at 1 minute intervals from 8-30 am on Saturday 3rd September 2011 and will return about 5.00 pm. As in previous years, the event is raising funds for the North West Air Ambulance charity to add to the £5000 raised so far. You can see more about the event at www.cvmc.org.uk and about the Air Ambulance at www.northwestairambulance.co.uk. Anybody who would like to be involved in marshalling on the event then please contact me and any training you need will be given on what, I hope, will be a great day out. If you have any question regarding the event please contact me on 01352 810430 or email guy@guywoodcock.com

Local News I have had a problem reported to me that concerns me greatly, a very irresponsible person has recently been walking their dog around the village without picking up their mess, it has only become a problem a short time ago, a complaint has been received from the school that it has been walked into school and into parents homes, as you can imagine the complaints that I have received have been very angry. THIS MUST STOP NOW as a dog owner I am not prepared to be classed in the same league as this irresponsible person use 1 of 2 options. pick up after your dog or don't walk it in the village. I don't want this problem reported to me again. Yours, Councillor Yvonne Foden McCorry

From the Vicar - Joy, ET, and Easter For Christians Easter Day marks the most important festival in the church year. One word much associated with the festival through many centuries is the word 'joy'. Why? The Hebrew root of the word 'joy' used in the Old Testament of the Bible implies 'being excited', and the Greek word in the New Testament implies 'intense joy'. For those who believe that, as St John's Gospel puts it, "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life", Easter is the point where that belief is given its most vivid expression. Jesus Christ has been born in an earthly manger at Christmas, he has grown up, begun a short but spectacular ministry of teaching, preaching, and healing, been arrested, sentenced to death, and crucified. Some of Jesus followers in those days of his earthly ministry grasped who he was but many did not. 'Who are you?' was a question on the lips of many at the time. As Christians celebrate the finding of the empty tomb, and begin to listen to the words on the lips of the risen Jesus Christ as he walks with his first disciples along a dusty road to Emmaus, our Easter emotions include excitement at those momentous events. That death itself is defeated is a cause for intense joy. Resurrection is no longer only an
abstract religious concept to be debated by the differing religious groups of the day. For followers of the Risen Christ it is a reality, to be experienced through his presence with us today. In our own lives of both sorrows and joys I imagine that most of us will be able to think of some special times of joy. In the film ET - the Extra Terrestrial - a young (and cute and cuddly looking) alien with extraordinary powers gets left behind on earth by accident. He is befriended by a young boy called Elliot. Elliot tries to keep ETs presence secret because he is scared of how adults will treat him, and the young boy comes to experience ETs remarkable powers including being able to do extra-ordinary things with plants! Events in the film take a turn for the worst and Elliot believes that ET has gone or has been killed. In one memorable scene, however, Elliot notices a withered flower suddenly coming to full life. He realises that ET is in fact alive and well and nearby with them. His joy seems to know no bounds. In our world of both joys and sorrows, the Good News of Easter is where Christian celebration and joy is centred. I hope and pray that, this Easter, the joy of the risen Christ will touch your lives. God bless Adrian

Dr Christine’s letter - April 2011 Lovely weather at last and the bulbs are beautiful. I have had an eventful month what with the tomb raiders at St Garmon's church. Also I took a trip to Cardiff to listen to the EXIT doctor, from Australia, who was talking about 'The Peaceful Pill'. They had trouble getting a venue due to the press but managed to book a hotel opposite the Castle. About 24 people attended after we had cleared the press. One or two looked seriously ill but the rest were just interested to hear what Dr Philip Nitschke had to say and to buy the book. You can go on line to EXIT International if you are interested, although I would not like to be accused of advertising this. This is a personal decision. I also went to the unveiling of the statue of H M Stanley on Thursday 17th March. A good audience were addressed by the biographer Tim Jeal who spoke movingly as to how Stanley had stopped the slave trade in that part of Africa in the mid 19th century, by opposing the Arab slave traders from Zanzibar. So he is highly thought of in the Congo. I personally think he was a brave man.
year starting soon. The road from Llanferres to Maeshafn, [village road I think it is called] and the road from Tafarn y Gelyn to top Pen Barras car park [Forestry road.] The road from Pant Du to the old YHA in Maeshafn [which is in Flintshire] now is wonderful and as I write the Maeshafn village should be being resurfaced. The county has got a large resurfacing programme for next financial year as they realise how appalling the roads are.
Parking on the road up to Cadole has fallen beneath the radar. The trunk road agency and the police [Denbighshire] appear totally uninterested. Perhaps we should man the pavement, going from the country park to the border ourselves. I am having a Council work continues with the new trip round with our new policeman Ben scrutinies and their programme being set Madely at the end of March. so I will bring up enforcement of No Parking signs again. up. Did you see it? You would have had to have been pretty quick off the mark to catch it, but last Saturday (19th March) was the night of the perigee moon in the UK, with the full moon at its closest to the earth for about 18 years. Adrian Walls was alert to catch some excellent pictures as the moon rose over Craig Harris, but it soon disappeared behind cloud for much of the rest of the night. There’s more of Adrian’s photographs on our website and a link to some excellent ones on the BBC's site sent in by viewers in other parts of the country that had a better view of it. Apparently coastal walkers
in some parts have been caught out by exceptionally high tides caused by the moon’s proximity. If you missed it - don’t worry there’ll be another along in about another 20 years!
