Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Christmas Pudding It is not too late to make your own Christmas pudding. It will not only taste a whole lot better than anything you can buy but the warm glow you get as you serve it (hopefully not from the burning brandy) will make it worth while. It is very simple and a great thing to do as a family. If you need a nice basin we have some at the café. Makes a 2 pint pudding to serve 8 550g dried fruit : currents, raisins, sultanas, dates &/or figs 50 g chopped peel 1 large cooking apple peeled and finely chopped 250ml stout zest of 1 orange & 1 lemon 100g cold grated butter 100g dark brown sugar 100g white bread crumbs 50g self raising flour 50g almonds ½ tsp each of ginger, cinnamon, cloves & nutmeg ( or 1tsp mixed spice) 2 eggs Mix dried fruit, zests and stout in a bowl and leave to soak (preferably over night). Butter inside of pudding basin. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl, Add butter, eggs and fruit and stir well. Spoon into basin about 2cm from top and pat down well. Cover with greaseproof paper and foil with pleat and secure with string. Steam in pan of just boiling water, halfway up basin, for 6 hours. Check water regularly and top up. Recover with fresh paper and foil and store in cool place. Steam for 1 ½ hours to serve.

We shall have our usual Christingle Service with the symbolic oranges for the children; our Carol Service followed by Sherry and Mince Pies; the short Crib and Christmas Story service which proved very popular last year, and not just for the children; there is the First Communion of Christmas for those night owls and a Christmas morning service for those who prefer daylight hours to celebrate Christmas. The day after Christmas is a Sunday so there is a morning communion then as well. In January there is a fifth Sunday and it is Llanferres' turn to host the group service. We look forward to welcoming you all. Give a chicken for Christmas Instead of giving Christmas cards to each other, we are donating to a CAFOD project; maybe you would like to join us? We give one card wishing everybody seasons greetings, which is put up in the church and make a donation in a box at the back of the church, or to one of the church wardens. If you forgot to do it in News and Views why not give it a try.

A Christmas Message from Revd Adrian Copping How do you prepare for Christmas and the New Year ahead? Christians traditionally approach the season by observing Advent. In the four weeks of Advent the church is invited to reflect on what it means to 'make straight the way for the coming of the Messiah'. Those words echo the call of John the Baptist himself preparing the way for Jesus to begin his earthly ministry nearly two thousand years ago. Our reflections include thinking about the 'incarnation' - the marvellous event of God becoming human for us in the person of Jesus Christ - and the invitation of all creation to receive the gifts and grace of God. We are invited to ponder the marvel that the events in Bethlehem so many years ago are made real for us now by God's continuing presence. At the same time we look forward - not only to the celebrations of Christmas itself and to whatever the new year may bring - but to remember our faith that Jesus Christ has not only come to us in the manger at Bethlehem, but that through his Holy Spirit he lives with us now, and that one day he will be fully revealed to us.
I do not know what your New year will bring, but for Diane and I, 2011 brings with it a move to Llanferres. The church's new year begins at the start of Advent and, as Christmas is the first major festival of the church year, it will be good to be present in the village we are moving to in the year ahead. Of course I appreciate that probably most reading this would have wished that the building of houses on the Glebe Field had not gone ahead. One box of papers I inherited from my predecessor, and his predecessor, remind me of how many years that issue was active before the final granting of planning permission.
When, eighteen months ago, I accepted the Bishop's offer to move to these five parishes Diane and I had no idea where we would live after a period in our temporary housing. Whilst being very mindful of the background, the subsequent decision of the church authorities that, instead of building five house for private occupation, one of the five houses to be built would be the new Rectory/Vicarage does at least mean that we can look forward, by the early summer, to being residents of I hope that you will join with the Llanferres and enjoying both the church's celebration of the season - but village and its beautiful surroundings. if not I certainly wish you a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year! Whatever hopes and fears, whatever This year, if all goes to plan, I hope to challenges and opportunities you may be at St Berres for 'Midnight Mass', find in the season and year ahead, may something of course I cannot do every the peace of the Christ child find a year as other churches in the 'Bro welcome in your hearts this Christmas, Famau' group of which we are part and may your New Year also be blessed. have their midnight services at the same time! Being in the parish for that Adrian service this year will have special meaning for me.

Photography Tips The first in a regular series of seasonal photographic tips from our local professional
Autumn is a wonderful excuse to take some time out to go for a local walk with your camera. The combination of the low sun in the sky and vibrant oranges and browns as nature sheds her summer growth, makes the next month or so unmissable. You don't need a special camera and big clunky lenses either. With a few tips you can take great nature and landscape shots with any camera. The first, and most important thing to do, is to be in the right place at the right time. For photography, this means soon after sunrise and the hour or so before sunset. So check the weather, pick a clear day and head off early in the morning (sunrise does not mean the middle of the night at this time of year). Know where you want to be in advance and get there, well wrapped up, in plenty of time to catch the light. I love the view over Loggerheads at this time of year, the colourful autumn trees can feel like a mini New England on a misty morning! Pop into the woods above Loggerheads from the signed path just down the road from Cadole. David is a local landscape and commercial photographer, who runs photography workshops for anyone who wishes to learn more about using their camera to its full advantage and exploring their creativity in photography. www.davidwhitestudio.co.uk

B team news Llanferres 1-7 Holywell B
The attendance in the last month has been at an all time high with lots of new faces! We even pushed for a 5th court in the gymnasium but were unsuccessful. This good attendance was proved when we decided to enter a Llanferres C team into the cup! Unfortunately there are no pictures in this month's article however I look forward to posting some next month. Overall since the club moved from Ruthin School to Brynhyfyrd at the start of the season the attendance has been great, there is a friendly atmosphere and even the match scores are improving!
Due to the promotion of Kevin to the A team before his injury the whole club was happy to see June Lovell step in as the new captain for the team. The one match Llanferres won came from Ladies doubles Eleri Davies and Ffion Roberts who seem to be on fire as they won the week before against Hawarden. The score did not portray the match as there were close games with men's doubles Owen Hall and Max Griffiths narrowly losing 17-16. The team seems to be getting stronger and stronger as were beginning to gel and play as a unit for an encouraging and determined captain June Lovell.
A team news Llanferres 8-0 Connahs Quay The A team found themselves with a man down after new boy to the team Kevin Littlewood became injured with quite a serious bad back, best wishes for a speedy recovery Kev! This left a space for the new star Owen Hall to step in and play his heart out against Connahs Quay B.
C team news Buckley 12-4 Llanferres (cup match)
Captain June Healy was proud of her brand new team that played well and had some very close games against a strong Buckley side. Pick of the bunch came from Llanferres twins Daniel and Hugo Williams who looked strong and hopeful. The team consisted of June Healy, Laura Seddon, Karen Dovey Evans, Moira Bonar, Ru Captain Dave Clough said '' There was an Kerrigan, Tom Pimblett, Daniel Williams and amazing rally where Owen dived to reach a Hugo Williams. The team will now go into shot, then picked himself up to play the 'plate'. possibly 3 more difficult shots before winning the rally - this certainly had the crowd on its feet with applause. I think that he and I will become a regular 1st pair as Need a baby sitter? A Tribute John Roberts has been Treasurer of Llanferres Village Hall for the last 46 years and is regarded by many as a permanent fixture. However, John has decided to retire. He will be greatly missed for, not only was he treasurer, booking clerk and key holder but he also did much more to keep the hall functioning. As a token of appreciation, the Village Hall Management Committee have presented John with a standard rose planted in his garden, a Welsh Crystal rose bowl and a Certificate commemorating his retirement. I am sure everyone will want to thank John for all his endeavours and dedication over such a long time and wish him well in his retirement. The new Treasurer is David Twomey, 25 Cae Gwyn. Local news The Llanferres Community Council Logging Group has operated since the spring of 2006. Our aim has been to provide locally sourced, reasonably priced logs to the community and at the same time raise funds for local charities selected by the Council. To date these charities have been Hope House Children’s Hospice, Crossroads, The Friends of Moel Findeg, and the Llanferres and Maeshafn Playing Fields. All logging is done by volunteers and for each load a levy of £5 is used to cover expenses such as fuel and replacing saw chains etc. To date we have raised just over £9,000 with over £8,000 going to charity, expenses being 10.6%. We hope to be able to continue the logging next year but we do need volunteers to help collect and distribute the logs - you will not be asked to use a chain saw. It is very good exercise and gives you days out in the woods - what could be better? Please contact David on 810465 or Rod on 810528 if you can help.

End of an Era Barbara and Colin Thomas, after threatening to do so on a number of previous occasions, are now leaving the village, which brings to a close a significant period in the history of the community! Colin and Barbara are near legendary for several reasons. They started News & Views some 15 years ago producing the magazine for seven years; Barbara the main reporter, photographer, designer and more, and Colin proof reader and deliverer. They will always be remembered for their great fancy dress outfits, particularly at the Hallowe’en discos that they played a large part in organising. Barbara was Secretary of the Playing Field Association in the important early years, also she used to organise the Village Show every year, and she held key posts on the Village Hall committee! Colin’s drumming and air guitar lessons will be sorely missed by the youth of the community, as will the playful and mischievous Hector! Whatever they were involved in - from reenactments to community events you could always guarantee that they would commit wholeheartedly to the cause! We wish Colin and Barbara all the very best for the future in their new home!

“ We would teach the Simplified version (24 movements) This is a slow moving form, helping balance, bone density, relaxation and concentration.” Qi Qong is a breathing exercise. This exercise can be performed either sitting down or standing up and is static. It concentrates on various parts of the body helping to direct the (qi) oxygen around the body. This exercise has 18 movements. Both the above forms are not strenuous but very beneficial and can be practised by people of all ages and physical capabilities. We always recommend comfortable clothing and flat shoes. You can register your interest (no commitment ) by calling Lin and Bill on 07507667071 or fill in the form on our website: www.llanferres.org - again there’s no commitment Lin & Bill just want to gauge interest and likely take up of the classes.

Council work goes on, dominated at the moment by the health services and BCUHT and their need to reduce acute services, maternity, orthopaedic general surgery and paediatrics. I have attended numerous meetings but in Llanferres you are not likely to suffer as you have access to Maelor as well as Glan Clwyd, so you will have fairly close service wherever they are based. The people of the A55 corridor are very fearful. I am not too pleased at the intended closure of 15 beds in Ruthin as this is a good and well run community hospital. On the brighter side I went with St Peter's Ruthin choir to Westminster Abbey for the commemoration of Dean Goodman [who went for Ruthin 400 years ago] to become Dean of the Abbey. A wonderful day, the young choristers, 10 in all, were enthralled. Not every one can say the have sung in an evening service in this wonderful cathedral with so many people to walk over their graves as you go around. I sat next door to a statue to William Ewart Gladstone who attributed his longevity to chewing each mouthful 34 times, his meals must have been very tedious. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. If bad weather comes, as last year, help out the old and needy.
The trees however have been amazing .What beautiful colouring of the leaves there has been for the last month, makes you feel good to be alive. I enjoyed the last bonfire and fireworks on the Glebe Field on Guy Fawkes night, this is the first time I have been, it was well attended. Thanks to the organisers I also attended the Remembrance Day service on November 14th in the morning and felt that there were too few youngsters there. There is a war going on at the moment with many casualties. At Llanarmon-Yn-Ial in the afternoon there were more youths [12] from the Air Cadets although the numbers from the village again were less than one would hope for. You don't need to be a regular church goer to give your thanks to previous fighting men and women, but attending these services shows respect.. My father who would be 121 years if he was alive, missed out on the World War 1, as he was an Anglican curate and they did not go to the front [not in those days only the padres]. He was handed numerous white feathers from the women of his parish in Cirencester. He told me Regards that he was the only young man still alive from Christine Evans christinemaryevans@hotmail.com
