Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our meeting held on Monday June 13th had as guest speaker Carol Madden, her topic "Your Plot is a Herb Garden" was a miscellany of information about plants most people have in their gardens. They included nettles as a vegetable (used to make soup) or cloth manufacture; dandelion for salad, beer or coffee substitute; snowdrops for polio treatment; pot marigold (calendula) for hand cream and yellow dye; poached egg plants for bees and particularly hoverflies. All these and a host of others - some illustrated with slides - opened our minds about plants which we grow or have been in gardens for perhaps 2000 years. The meeting on Monday July 11th will be a garden visit to Dove Cottage, Penyffordd. Start at Llanferres church at 6.30 pm for car convoy. The meeting on Monday August 8th will be the evening when the final arrangements are made for our Annual Show on Saturday, September 3rd. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE July & August are the months when the bilberry bushes on our hills are laden with their jewel like fruit. They are beautiful, have a very distinctive taste and better still are free. The down side is that they do take a while to pick. But what can be better on a summer’s day than to walk a while, take a rest to admire the view and pick a box of bilberries. The good thing about this recipe is that it only needs a handful. Do be warned, the fruit does stain when squashed so don’t fill the pockets of your new white jeans!! We make these at the café with groups of children so they are really very easy and quite delicious.

Bilberry Muffins 375g Self Raising flour 330g castor sugar 90g butter or margarine 310ml milk 1 egg 75g bilberries demerara sugar Rub fat into flour. Add the sugar and mix. Add milk and beaten egg and mix lightly. Add bilberries and mix in gently. Place muffin cases inside a muffin tin Spoon mix to fill cases to about 2/3 full Sprinkle a small teaspoon of demerara sugar on top of each muffin Place in a preheated oven at 180C gas mark 4 for about 20 mins until soft and spongy when pressed and lightly brown. Avoid opening oven until nearly done.

Take Care Local residents are urged to take extra care when driving through our villages, particularly in areas where children play during the summer months. According to research eighty per cent of accidents involving children occur during the school holidays, at weekends, and in the afternoon and evening on school days. Please don’t, and urge visitors not to, park too close to entrances used by children (like the school, park and playing fields), so that children and other drivers have a clear line of sight at these danger points. A Few Facts Ÿ Many accidents happen on light summer evenings when children are playing outside Ÿ A third of children injured while crossing the road say that they did not stop before they stepped off the kerb Ÿ – and as many say they did not look Ÿ More than a third of children injured while walking or playing are alone at the time – and only one in 10 are with an adult. Ÿ Boys have nearly twice as many accidents as girls when they are walking or playing, and more than five times as many when riding bikes Ÿ Source: AA Motoring Trust

The Gallon Walk - Time for Change? Friday 17th June is a night we always await with an element of trepidation and fear as to what part of our property we are going to have to repair this year (fences usually). How many cans, bottles and plastic cups are going to be hurled against the side of our house, in our hedges and our fields, how many times we will be woken up by rather loud incoherent singing and whether our garden will survive the night intact or end up with a load of beer glasses and mud strewn across it. It may be just me getting old and slightly more "Daily Mail" in my outlook on life, but am I the only resident who thinks that unless the Gallon Walk is being done on an organised basis and for charity (ie all the walkers asked constantly to contribute to charities), it should perhaps be discouraged? It seems to be a load of youths staggering around completely off their trollies. After all, who benefits? The landlords of the various pubs clearly do and I note that We Three Loggerheads advertises the Gallon Walk a long time beforehand. Stag do's are coming into the area. People are walking up from Mold or getting dropped off in one of the pubs by taxi or minibus.

licences also benefit. On numerous occasions I have seen people stagger by carrying bags full of beer cans. Has the Gallon Walk become an event well beyond the original aims it was established for, which was to raise money for charities and have a good, well ordered drunken stagger around lots of pubs? What can be done to control it before things get completely out of hand and we end up with a fairly serious incident? Perhaps the landlords could take a bit more responsibility and accept that this is not an event to advertise as a booze tour of Llanferres and surrounds and instead encourage the charitable side considerably more than they currently do. Perhaps the community council could start providing stewards and charge the pubs for the cost? A Concerned Resident, perhaps a little NIMBY (not in my back yard). Name and address supplied

What’s your opinion? You can air your views on our facebook page, email newsandviews@llanferres.org or via our website www.llanferres.org or, if you prefer, more traditional means. However it is not just the landlords Tel: 810566 or a note to 2 Cae Gwyn, who do well. Supermarkets and off Llanferres CH7 5SL

Maeshafn CC news It has been a busy start to the season for us. So far, apart from a game conceded and a friendly cancelled due to bad weather, we have played every game in the fixture list (8 so far). We have won 4 and lost 4. Four of our players have already hit half centuries this year, and we have had over four 5 wicket hauls. Fortunately this year we have a large squad and plenty of players to call upon as injuries, depressed players and holidays have already hit us and regulars like Tom Hall have been able to take a break due to injury without the club folding! We were top of the league for a while, but it didn't last as we have now lost our last four fixtures. Admittedly two of these were against very strong opposition, but two were not and our newer players have had a bit of a baptism of fire with experiencing the major depression that follows dropping absolute sitters (catches). Fortunately Dave Williams has taken up sheep rustling and we no longer have to take a ladder with us to rescue players from the roof of the pavilion.

seats in the theatre have improved or whether agonising back ache still occurs after an hour or so. A Cricket Laws Teaser for any budding umpires out there: Question: You are the umpire. A ball is bowled which goes past the batsman and the stumps, appearing to miss the stumps completely but passing very close to them. The wicket keeper runs forward and appeals for the batsman to be out. He points at the bails lying on the floor. It was windy but the bails had not fallen off before that incident in the game. The square leg umpire did not see the bails come off at all. What do you do? Answer: This actually occurred in a game on Saturday. The umpire (me) indicated "not out" because I had not seen the bails come off as the ball went past the stumps and hence the batsman was not out. Needless to say the opposition were not very happy! Practices are still on Mondays at Buckley CC - 6.30pm onwards until the end of August.

Our tour this year has a cultural twist to it, with a visit to Stratford upon Avon in Jonathan Fagan August (we are playing at the cricket jbfagan@ten-percent.co.uk club there which should be interesting). It will be good to see if the

VALE OF CLWYD CLASSIC 3RD SEPTEMBER 2011 After over 40 years of organising motorsport events Clwyd Vale Motor Club are now proposing to run the inaugural Vale of Clwyd Classic sponsored by Jonathan Turner of AGS Security Systems. Cars entered on this event will be mainly from the 1950s and 1960s, including many of the famous makes of those years, such as Triumph, MG, Porsche, Jaguar, Mini Cooper and Austin Healey. We also hope there will also be some Vintage cars. The event consists of a tour of the Vale and surrounding area set at an average speed of less than 28mph, linking locations of special interest. At these locations the crews face a variety of manoeuvrability and driving skill tests. Scrutineering of the cars will take place on Friday evening at Loggerheads garage and the cars will be able to be viewed at the Druid from 6 pm – 8 pm. Freedom of the County On a day that threatened to rain and even hailstone, we were lucky that it remained dry for the Parade through Denbigh of the Royal Welsh. It was a very successful day, with the residents of Denbighshire turning out in force to support the Battalion and to view the Parade. Mayors from every Council attended, with probably the largest collection of Battalion’s work and their Gold Chains in Wales! Dr Christine’s letter - June 2011 The work goes on as usual, I am just about getting the hang of the new scrutiny programme. I am Vice Chair of the Partnerships Scrutiny which is pretty vast but many more topics are now decided more locally at the Area Members Groups of which we are in Ruthin I still think much more could be decided by the Community Councils, especially planning without going to planning committee, or even planning officers, as we have much better local knowledge and know what is needed in the way of improving local businesses/dwellings. There are enough people concerned with the local beauty to safeguard the countryside from monstrosities and pushy property developers. On the pleasant side I went on 11th June to the conferment of the Freedom of Denbighshire to the Royal Welsh. The weather held fair [just] Denbigh was packed and all the children were there as well as dignitaries. Colonel Beard of the regiment gave a moving address, amongst others, reminding us that the Royal Welsh, which was formed 2 years ago from the 3 Welsh regiments, have been twice to the front line recently in Afghanistan and the losses they had incurred. The mascot the Goat from the Great Orme was white as white and had a natty little personalised transport. The Armstrongs, father and son, were there from Llanferres and Rupert and Mair Lloyd from Llanarmon, the latter were representing the British Legion as they both served in WW2. There were a good number of old soldiers with all their gallantry medal parading and in the crowd.

As a member of The Council for the Protection of Rural Wales [CPRW] I also visited the Coastal path which is being revamped at Bagillt, the intention is it should eventually be possible to walk and horse/cycle ride along the whole of the Welsh coast round to Chepstow. We also visited the Woodland Skills Centre in The Warren, Bodfari, which has excellent course and exploratory programmes for youngsters. Both these are worth a visit you will find them on line. I have just visited Lloyd Georges home near Criccieth, a museum and also good value He was the greatest modern Welshman He introduce amongst other things National Insurance in the 1920s as well as winning WW1, we were doing badly till he became Minister of War in 1916. The parking at Cadole has moved on a smidgeon further on with the consultation having closed. There are 3 objections to the yellow lines going from Loggerheads to Cadole which the WAG must look into. Nature Notes Due to varoa mite and 'colony collapse disorder' etc. honey bees are in trouble. Consequently, the very valuable work of pollination performed by bumblebees, to so many of our food crops, is increasingly being appreciated and understood. We are, therefore, being encouraged to do all we can to help and preserve these useful insects. So it is a little disturbing when a number of people have contacted me to ask what is happening to bumblebees as they have found many dead specimens lying on the ground. Jed and Polly brought me about ten that they had found in Pentre Cerrig (Bowens's) Lane. They were nearly all of the species Bombus terrestris or B. lucorum - the workers of these two species are virtually indistinguishable although the queens are different. They nearly all had the tail missing and the abdomen had been eviscerated. I did quite a bit of reading and research on the subject and discovered several possible reasons and some theories. Firstly I found a passage in "The Life of the Bumblebee" by D.V. Alford which I quote - 'In summer, large numbers of dead bumblebees are often found beneath lime trees, and it is sometimes thought that pesticides are to blame. However, nectar secreted by the blossom is itself intoxicating and often fatal to bees. Workers and males of Bombus lucorum and Bombus terrestris are the most frequent victims. Drunken specimens around the trees are commonly attacked by wasps and birds, especially great tits, while dead bodies on the ground are often plundered by ants." However, there are no lime trees in Bowen's Lane. On doing further research I found references to dead bumblebees being

found under flowering sycamore trees and hawthorn bushes, which were in full bloom, and it was suggested that the bees had become intoxicated by their nectar. Other sources speculate that bees heavy with pollen and nectar might have been driven to the ground by sudden, heavy downpours of rain and before they were able to dry off and fly were attacked by birds - the great tit was usually accused of being the most likely predator. Another theory:- "Worker bumblebees only live about four weeks and when a colony is first established the queen lays a batch of eggs which she broods until they become larvae and almost all of these larvae will become adult bees at about the same time. It is possible, therefore, that the first batch of adult worker bees in a colony will mostly die off at about the same time, approximately four weeks after the colony is first established." Other possible causes are parasite infection, of which there are several; bees remaining out over night (which they sometimes do) and being killed by a sudden drop in temperature, which would need to be severe, but then it did drop to minus 0路1掳C on 11th June and 0路4掳C the following night; the nest being flooded by heavy rain; pesticides being sprayed on the plants on which the bees have been foraging. More bizarrely, studies in Switzerland and India came to the conclusion that signals from mobile phones could be contributing to the decline of bees. Personally, I suspect that sudden heavy downpours, of which we have had several, are the most likely cause of the problem.
