Welcome Welcome to the June edition of News & Views.
Thanks to the support of our advertisers and the Community Council we’ve invested in a new colour printer in the last couple of months, which has enabled us to include more full colour. We hope you think it’s an improvement. We’ve included an idea for a monthly book swap in this month (page 4). This is an open invitation to anyone who is interested in reading and wants to share their books (not quite the mobile library, but there’s a social side too!) Thanks to Ian Robinson again for the front page photograph. Please note that the next edition will cover both July and August, there will not be a separate August edition, so please send in any relevant information for both months. Paul & Siobhan

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our guest speaker in May was Kevin Pratt with his topic "The Bulb Year". Explaining his fascination with bulbs from early childhood, Mr Pratt now grows over 10,000 bulbs in his garden 30ft X 30ft. As bulbs are planted at different depths and flower in different seasons this is intensive growing. In an excellent range of slides starting with snowdrops and finishing with a range of hardy cyclamen, Mr Pratt's greatest passion is the range of over 50 species of fritillarias of which, perhaps, 10 - 12 species were particularly special. After his talk members are more than eager to tackle growing more than daffodils and tulips. SHOW UPDATE:- If anyone is wanting to have a stall at the ANNUAL SHOW ON 5th SEPTEMBER please contact either the Show Secretary or myself. The next meeting will be on Monday June 8th when Anthony Norman will give an illustrated talk entitled "Climbers". Annual Subscription is still only £4 and visitors pay £1 per meeting and, as usual, are most welcome. On Saturday June 13th, 10am to 4pm, as part of Denbighshire Countryside Biodiversity week, those members who are helping create a wildlife garden at Loggerheads Country Park will be on hand to talk about, and perhaps help to encourage, a wildlife haven in your garden . Mr. Geoff CritchleyMaster Beekeeper was our speaker for the evening and a lively debate was held. Monthly Recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Blackcurrant jam We will soon be into soft fruit season and so we thought we would share our recipe for the delicious blackcurrant jam we make to serve with scones. Making jam is easy and if you haven't done it before blackcurrant is good to start with as it sets well. Ingredients 600 grams of fresh or drained blackcurrants 400 grams of granulated sugar 100 ml water. Method Add the blackcurrants to the pan with the water and simmer gently until soft. Add sugar and heat gently until dissolved. Boil rapidly until setting point is reached. Remove scum and jar. Testing for set The easiest way to test for setting is using a sugar thermometer. Setting point is reached at 105C or 220F assuming sufficient sugar and pectin are present. If you don't have a thermometer, it is possible to test using the saucer method. This involves putting a saucer into the fridge before you start making the jam. When you think you may have reached setting point add a small blob of jam onto the saucer and leave to cool slightly. If setting point has been reached, wrinkles will appear as you run your finger through the jam. Preparing Jars Clean jars are essential to prevent bacterial growth during storage. Jars should be washed and then stood upside down in a warm oven set to 160C, 325F. This will sterilise the jars and ensure they are warm and don't crack as you add the hot jam or chutney. Jars should be well filled, as there will be some shrinkage during cooling. If using wax disks place on top immediately and add cellophane once cool. If using screw top jars add immediately.

The diary of Christine Evans’ last ever Urolink trip to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique 2008 Week 5: Saturday 29th November Saturday 6th December. Off to Maputo via Jo’burg. As I have a Diners card I could get into the Premier lounge and had my first hot shower for 8 days- brilliant I felt clean at last. I love Jo'burg airport they have a smokers lounge with a bar and TV and it is civilised. Christopher lost his luggage by the time we arrived in Maputo. The examining team from Kenya with were held up with aeroplane problems in Lilongwe. They were the main exam organisers, so the next day I set off with Dr Mapasse to sort out the patients for the Membership exam. The amount of rubbish in the streets was awful and the begging troublesome but otherwise the hotel was fine - 3 star, clean and a good breakfast. The whole week was good, the exams ran well, mostly, but I was not happy about the format. We had sterling help from Kirsty Muir from the Edinburgh College, Margaret Bean ex of the college to help with the organization. Ruth, my daughter, arrived on the Sunday for the week and went off on safari to Kruger park, just over the border in South Africa with 2 Canadian orthopaedic surgeons who had come to help with
the orthopaedic workshop and the Fellowship exams in orthopaedics. I ran my usual Train the Examiners meeting, the standard is not bad but there are still too many surgeons who like to hear their own voices. The Membership exams had a good pass rate and at last we are being more particular about the standard in the Fellowship exams. A lovely end to the week – I got a present from the COSECSA council as they all knew I'm at last, retiring! Bless me if Professor Jimmy James didn't give a short citation for me - I gave his when he got his Honorary Fellowship of the Edinburgh College 6 years ago, so all square. The only irritating note my laptop was stolen from the hotel room on the Wednesday after I had finished using it for the exams. I spent an interesting 9 hours over 2 days in Maputo police stations trying to get a report, so I can claim on my insurance. I returned home after an interesting 5 weeks. I felt that the troubles in Africa far out weigh anything we have in the UK so the credit crunch and the closing of Woolworth’s has left me unmoved. I shall miss all involved with Urolink but feel I have done my best and I am happy to leave younger people like Jaimin to help out in future.

County Councillor's Report 2008/9 for Llanferres I was pleased, if not a bit surprised to be voted as county councillor. For the first 5 months I had 3 other jobs, which off loaded slowly and then I completed my last overseas trip to N.Iraq and Subsaharan Africa in 11 weeks in the Autumn, when I was completely away from the area. Since Christmas I have been only a councillor and have been able to give you much more of my time to all the people and villages of this ward. There has been a steep learning curve with numerous member development days. I must have been to least 25, some useful, when I was taught about Corporate Manslaughter. Other aspects of the council's work is not quite so interesting!!! As far as the county council is concerned I am on the Social Services and Housing Scrutiny. This includes a Task and Finish group on Housing Advice [which I chair] and Homelessness Forum. I was also appointed Homelessness Champion as you know I have been driving a soup kitchen regularly, as well as visiting the Housing Associations, the various Shelters mainly in Rhyl. I am also on: Corporate Health Committee Corporate Parenting, Corporate Equality [Chair] Adult services Rural transport Forum [chair] AONB Heather and Hillforts Coed Llandegla [chair] RAWP Quarry Liaison Community Health Council, N.Wales and Denbighshire
I was honoured to be on the recent CEO appointments committee Local Issues. There were lengthy discussions about the LDP in the Autumn of 2008 I have driven around the parishes with the previous and then the acting CEO, with Tim Towers of Highways twice, both last and this year to inspect the roads. Three trips with our local PC Paul Holmes to discuss crime. I have attended most community council meetings. There a few issues, from this last month: We failed in the bid against the development of 5 houses on the Glebe field despite hard work for your community council, we were out witted and out knowledged by the clever property developers. Despite phone calls and emails I am no nearer to getting the parking near Cadole sorted I have tried to answer all questions about issues from local people, such as holes in the roads/parking, re housing, repairs to housing, dangerous trees, hedge and verge cutting, planning problems, disputes about noise and planning enforcement. I am now 4 weeks out from my ankle operation I am mobile but not yet driving I am now less on a high having reduced the painkillers. I had excellent treatment from Wrexham Maelor Hospital. You have an exceptionally good community council and flourishing villages. I love visiting Llanferres, Maeshafn and Loggerheads . Christine Evans 22th May 2009

Nature Notes It is good to discover that the cuckoo is back in Llanferres. A lady telephoned me on 28th of April to say she had heard one calling but it was not until the 12th of May that I heard it for myself (although I had been away the previous week) and then it was only a single, but unmistakable, call. It is several years since I have heard one in Llanferres yet they frequent neighbouring areas so why they normally shun ours is a mystery. At this time of year some of our smaller lanes become lined in bridal white as the cow parsley comes into bloom. Here and there red campion, greater celandine and herb Robert show through to make it look as though the lane has been scattered with confetti. Cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) rouses conflicting emotions amongst people - some (myself included) like to see it as a harbinger of summer and a valuable source of nectar for insects, and others see it as an obnoxious weed. Both points of view have legitimacy. On a warm day in late May or early June a stand of cow parsley makes a brilliant sight and can hum with the sound of busy insects and the umbellate flowers can be liberally sprinkled with reddish-brown soldier beetles. Its young leaves can be used as a potherb or dried and used as a spicy seasoning for soups, stews or omelettes and the roots treated like parsnips. A bright-green dye can be extracted from the leaves but it is not permanent. It is known by some oth-
er names such as wild chervil, wild beaked parsley, keck and Queen Anne's lace. It can be mistaken for hemlock and fool's parsley, both of which are poisonous, so needs to be treated with caution although they both tend to flower a little later than cow parsley. It can be invasive, but it seldom spreads into neighbouring pasture fields as it is kept under control by the young rosettes being grazed by rabbits, sheep or cattle. It prefers disturbed soil but its seed is not long lived, seldom surviving more than one winter. However, in countries where it is not native, but has been introduced, such as Iceland and the USA, it has become a considerable nuisance and proved difficult to control. What is the condition of our local River Alyn? Over the years there seems to have been a falloff in the number of birds on the river. Dippers, pied wagtails and grey wagtails are less common than they used to be. At one time I expected to see them every time I went near the river but now, although they are still there, I see them much less frequently. Even the moorhens and mallards seem to be down in numbers. The water looks clean but has the invertebrate life reduced, making food less available to birds, or is there some other cause? Or, perhaps I have just been unlucky in my sightings! What are other peoples impressions?
