Llanferres Over 60's On May 10th we had a lovely " Afternoon tea" at Betty's. There was enough food for a Banquet, and we had a good natter, and much amusement doing a "Television" quiz. Many thanks to Betty from us all. On June 21st, instead of a meeting, and following Mr Parkin's talk on Paper-weights, Betty has arranged a visit to St Helens Glass Museum. The cost will be ÂŁ12.99 for a tour, a demonstration,and Lunch. The cost of the Mini-bus (for which we only have to pay mileage) depends on numbers. Community Council News - May Meeting Llanferres Community Council Meeting May 12th 2011 Apologies: Cllr Jac Armstrong Meeting Open to the Public There were no matters raised for discussion. Chairman`s Annual Report Cllr John Almond described the year as "somewhat frustrating but with some positives". Many factors have contributed to the delays in the transfer of the Maeshafn Playing Field land to the council and progress towards the purchase of the land adjacent to the school is very slow, despite the best efforts of the Council. Parking at Cadole and Loggerheads has yet to be resolved but we do have some road resurfacing due this year. The Council has dealt with numerous planning applications but not without experiencing difficulties with the DCC planning department over the time allowed for responses to be made. The play equipment has been installed at Maeshafn play area, new notice boards have been erected at Tafarn -y-Gelyn and Pant Du and the board at Tyn Llan will be extended shortly. It had been a busy year with attendance at formal meetings being almost one a week in addition to informal meetings with colleagues and others. Following the meetings reports had been circulated to Councillors. Cllr Almond congratulated Cllr Rob Armstrong on being made a School Governor, as a community representative and Cllr David Jones on his election to the County Council`s Standards Committee as the Town and Community Councils member.
Thanks were expressed to Mrs Gwyneth Dillon, Council Clerk, for all her hard work during the year and to Councillors for all their support and excellent attendance during the year. Cllr Almond paid a personal tribute to Mr David Scruton who died on April 21st. "David served on this Community Council for a number of years. He was hard working and brought an enthusiasm to every project he became involved with - such as Moel Findeg, the Maeshafn play area, the Logging group, the village Bar-B-Q or the Local Business Group. David was passionate about the village of Maeshafn and worked hard for the people of the village. He will be sorely missed." Cllr Almond thanked the councillors, past and present, who had formed the guard of honour at David`s funeral. All present then observed a one minute silence in memory of David. Election of Chairman: Cllr David Jones was elected. Election of Vice Chairman Cllr John Almond was elected. Llanferres Parish Gardening Club After the normal business had concluded, our guest speaker, Kate Briscoe, gave an illustrated talk "Designs from Yellow Book Gardens". Mrs Briscoe, a trained garden designer, had for 20 years worked to give some difficult spaces good design features. An exhibition of photographs and design programmes was on show and these, together with the slides, showed snippets of what can be done with those difficult garden corners. Our next meeting will be on 13th June when Carol Madden will have as her topic "Your Plot is a Herb Garden" which should prove fascinating. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Fish has become a huge foodie issue recently with many celebrity chefs promoting the use of sustainable fish and highlighting the madness of some fisheries policies. At CAFFI FLORENCE we do our very best to source locally and sustainably. So, our recipe for this month is the classic Moule Mariniere using delicious local Menai Mussels that are in season at the moment. Very quick to do, sophisticated and delicious. We buy all our fish from the Llandudno Smokery that is well worth visiting if you are in the area. They have a retail shop in Butchers St and also have an online shop www.thesmokery .co.uk. As well as Menai mussels they also had Grey Mullet from the Conwy Estuary when I called in last week. Other locally sourced fish available at this time of year are sea bass, turbot, Dover sole & plaice.

100 years ago As we know from the forms we’ve all just filled in 2011 is a census year, which means that as well as recording the current population, the census from 100 years ago is now available. In reality it as been available for about 2 years. The 1911 census can be searched in full online at www.1911census.co.uk, but there is a small charge for any information. Access is free at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

100 years ago the population of Llanferres was 499 with 119 households in the parish. As now, this included Maeshafn and Tafarn y Gelyn. The population was the same as that recorded in 1901, but this was well down on the peak in the middle of the 19th century when the population reached 799 in 1851. The reason for the higher figure was the number of people working within mining and quarrying, which peaked in the middle of that century. As many locals know there used to be two pubs in Llanferres village, with the Red Lion on Ruthin Road, as well as the Druid. The landlord of the Druid in 1911 was William Howells (age 31) who hailed from Caergwrle, and who resided at the Druid along with his wife Clara (age 30) and children Doris (age 5) and Samuel (age 4). You can see who was living in your house back then (if you’re not already aware) and as long as it’s old enough! from 1911census.co.uk, but there is a small cost. From the Rector I am writing this as the list of ‘must do before we move’ seems to grow ever longer! By the time you read this, if all has gone according to plan, Diane and I will have spent seven further days with our lives partly dominated by that list (!), two days being packed up and then moved by the removal company, and will now be ‘settled’ in Y Rhiethordy Newydd. I have put the ‘settled’ in inverted commas as, in my experience of moving, it’s hard to feel settled in the first few weeks. In the meantime church life continues! Our services of worship in the next two months will include a special ‘St Berres’ Day’ celebration service on Sunday 10th July. Last year we celebrated the day with some people’s favourite hymns and by exploring who our church’s patron saint actually was. This year we will do something a bit different but still in keeping with the overall theme. Also in the next month we will welcome a new face to the clergy and ministerial team in the Bro Famau Group of Parishes. For the next three years myself and the Rev'd Jean Stephens, our part
time ‘non-stipendiary’ Curate, will be joined by Philip Bettinson who is in the final stages of a theology degree and ministerial training at St Michael’s College, Llandaff. He will be ordained as the Rev'd Philip Bettinson on June 25th at the Cathedral at St Asaph and complete his full time ministerial training as Curate based in the five parishes. Philip and his wife Megan will move into the current Rectory at Nannerch and he starts with us on June 26th. In the meantime I am conscious that, as summer (hopefully!) comes to us, I am not the only busy one. Summer events, including the show in September all take as much planning as moving house – and much more! May God be with us in all we do. With every blessing Adrian

Dr Christine’s letter - June 2011 June here already and I am counting down the days till I retire early next May!!! Work first. The new Scrutinies have been selected. I am on the Partnerships which means we deal with Health through BCUHT, the Police and other partnerships such as Waste and Highways. The other Scrutinies are Communities and Performance. I am still Homelessness Champion. I have been on a committee to try to regenerate Rhyl [West End]. Some of the Children's village built only 20 years ago will be either smartened up for ž million or pulled down. Rhyl's beach, which is its best thing, is completely obscured by walls for flood defences, nothing can be done there then. I was also on the CEO appraisal committee, which turned out interesting. We have a very competent CEO who has brought in lots of good changes. He has improved the number of sick days off, trimmed down the work force, sold off unnecessary buildings and made DCC a happier place in which to work. Tim Towers of Highways and I have travelled every road in the ward in late April and hope the right roads will be improved. The road through Maeshafn village will be resurfaced as well as village road. And the road from Tafarn y Gelyn top Pen Barras cark park. I have also asked for traffic calming at the cross roads in Eryrys by The Sun. Although not in your village I suspect many of you travel on this road. On 20th May we had a special Full Council to discuss the LDP [Local Development Plan] a very important document [massive multi volume tome]. I am writing this as I listen to the arguments. The vote was 20 for the LDP as it has been written and 20
against. So the Chairman had the casting vote for. This means the village of Bodelwyddan, will get an additional approx 2000 houses. I went on an unannounced Community Health Council [CHC] Protected Mealtime visit to Ward 12 YGC [diabetic, renal and stroke]. They coped very well, despite the horror of seeing me again!!! They fed the stroke patients and the food looked good and well heated [only one complaint] I went to London to meet my surgeon friends from East Africa, a joint meeting at Royal Society of Medicine [RSM] with the Irish College, [they now seem to be the only college with money]. A lovely day and I will be going to examine again in late November in Harare and Lusaka for 2 weeks. Ruth had a great birthday weekend on the Tree Top walk in Betws y Coed, with her amazing University friends and then a medieval banquet in Ruthin where a bunch of Cavaliers were clopping Monty Python style around the roundabout at the top of town, with the police not caring a hoot. There was also my birthday, an unimportant one, but getting nearer 70. We went to Ruthin for a fabulous lunch at the Manorhaus Although a sad occasion I went to David Scruton's funeral. He had great love of the area, a wonderful villager of Maeshafn and guardian of Meol Findeg. He will be sadly missed. Regards Christine

Royal Welsh Freedom of the County update Denbighshire's Chairman, Councillor Meirick Lloyd Davies is calling on residents to show their support for the Freedom of the County event, when Denbighshire officially grants the Royal Welsh the freedom of the county on June 11 in Denbigh.

Nature Notes After the warm spell in April, the last few weeks have been a little disappointing, mainly due to the cool breeze. But cast your mind back to 1997. On the 6th May that year it snowed but luckily soon thawed. Going further back, I remember it snowing quite heavily (about an inch/25mm) one evening in May and that followed a couple of weeks of mild weather. Fortunately, the snow went overnight, so did little damage to plants which had been put out in the garden. It does, however, indicate the capricious nature of the British climate and warn us not to take anything for granted. One tends to think that cold winters are bad for wildlife and this is often so but in the case of hibernating insects, such as bumblebees and butterflies, a cold dry winter is preferred. They slow down their metabolism and are able to produce a type of antifreeze to stop their body fluids freezing and, therefore, survive very well. In mild damp winters, they often succumb to fungal infections. I mention this because we do seem to be having a bumper year for bumblebees, judging by the number and variety I am finding on my cotoneaster bush. However, bees do have a problem, as I have also seen the bee fly, Bombylius major, also taking nectar. This large fly looks like a bumblebee but has a prominent proboscis and long hairy legs. It often hovers in front of flowers and emits a high-pitched whine but is quite harmless to humans. Not so to bees, especially solitary bees, as it
lays its eggs in their nests and its grubs parasitize the bees' larvae. This year there does seem to be an abundance of St Mark's flies. Easily recognised as a large, black, hairy fly with long, dangling legs, it forms large mating swarms which, annoyingly, tend to fly at head height. It is harmless and gets its name because it usually appears around St Mark's day which is 25th April. Anglers, for some reason, call them hawthorn flies but they do not have any connection with the bush of that name. Passing a patch of woodland my attention was caught by a loud 'chittering' sound, which puzzled me for a few seconds, before I recognised it as the begging calls of young great-spotted woodpeckers. The young birds are very noisy as they beg for food from their parents and one can sometimes find two young birds with their heads out of the nest hole, as they compete with each other to be first to get the food when the parents return. They often give away their presence, with the noise they make, and leave themselves open to predation. I was not able to spot the nest from where I stood but, no doubt, I would have found it by delving further into the wood and any predator in the vicinity would have been quickly on the case.
