FlintShare is a community cooperative which aims to produce fresh, local sustainable food for its members. It is run by volunteers using the principle of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which is a way of developing a mutually supportive relationship between local food consumers and growers. For the consumers, CSA is an opportunity to directly support local food production and have a say in shaping their local environment. For growers and farmers, CSA ensures they get a fair return for their produce. At FlintShare we don’t employ a farmer yet, but rely on the voluntary work of members to help grow our food. This means our members have the opportunity to reconnect with the land and learn about how food can be produced locally and sustainably. We have two sites in the county of Flintshire, North Wales, at Cilcain and Ffynnongroyw. These we will develop to produce eggs, honey, fruit and veg. We are also considering more options for land in Flintshire

Monthly recipe sponsored by CAFFI FLORENCE SPICED SWEET PARSNIP SOUP Low calorie, simple and very filling, this soup is so full of flavour that it's bound to become a firm favourite. Perfect for enjoying as a starter or as a hot lunch. 500g sweet parsnips 1 onion 2 vegetable stock cubes 800ml water ½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs ½ tsp cumin ½ tsp ground coriander ¼ tsp nutmeg Salt and black pepper Crème fraîche (optional) Crusty bread Peel and roughly chop the parsnips and onion and place them in a large pan with the water, broken stock cubes, coriander, cumin, herbs and nutmeg. Add a pinch of salt and a good grinding of black pepper and bring to the boil. Give the mixture a good stir then turn the heat down a little, cover the pan and leave to simmer for around half an hour. With a soup whizzer (or if you don't have one of those, a blender or food processer will do just fine) give the mixture a good spin until smooth, then return to the saucepan. Taste and add a little more salt and pepper if required. Finally, ladle the soup into bowls and add a decorative swirl with a spoon of crème fraîche. Serve with hot crusty bread

Photography Tips The first in a regular series of seasonal photographic tips from our local professional
Autumn is a wonderful excuse to take some time out to go for a local walk with your camera. The combination of the low sun in the sky and vibrant oranges and browns as nature sheds her summer growth, makes the next month or so unmissable. You don't need a special camera and big clunky lenses either. With a few tips you can take great nature and landscape shots with any camera. The first, and most important thing to do, is to be in the right place at the right time. For photography, this means soon after sunrise and the hour or so before sunset. So check the weather, pick a clear day and head off early in the morning (sunrise does not mean the middle of the night at this time of year). Know where you want to be in advance and get there, well wrapped up, in plenty of time to catch the light. I love the view over Loggerheads at this time of year, the colourful autumn trees can feel like a mini New England on a misty morning! Pop into the woods above Loggerheads from the signed path just down the road from Cadole. David is a local landscape and commercial photographer, who runs photography workshops for anyone who wishes to learn more about using their camera to its full advantage and exploring their creativity in photography. www.davidwhitestudio.co.uk

VALE OF CLWYD CLASSIC 3RD SEPTEMBER 2011 After over 40 years of organising motorsport events Clwyd Vale Motor Club are now proposing to run the inaugural Vale of Clwyd Classic sponsored by Jonathan Turner of AGS Security Systems. Cars entered on this event will be mainly from the 1950s and 1960s, including many of the famous makes of those years, such as Triumph, MG, Porsche, Jaguar, Mini Cooper and Austin Healey. We also hope there will also be some Vintage cars. The event consists of a tour of the Vale and surrounding area set at an average speed of less than 28mph, linking locations of special interest. At these locations the crews face a variety of manoeuvrability and driving skill tests. Scrutineering of the cars will take place on Friday evening at Loggerheads garage and the cars will be able to be viewed at the Druid from 6 pm – 8 pm. The cars will be leaving The Druid Inn, Llanferres at 1 minute intervals from 8-30 am on Saturday 3rd September 2011 and will return about 5.00 pm. As in previous years, the event is raising funds for the North West Air Ambulance charity to add to the £5000 raised so far. You can see more about the event at www.cvmc.org.uk and about the Air Ambulance at www.northwestairambulance.co.uk. Anybody who would like to be involved in marshalling on the event then please contact me and any training you need will be given on what, I hope, will be a great day out. If you have any question regarding the event please contact me on 01352 810430 or email guy@guywoodcock.com

Local News After a long period of silence there has recently been a report in the Denbighshire Free Press that Go Ape will be putting in a planning application for the Zip Wild course on Moel Famau in the Spring. The proposal, which is supposed to take into account the views of local inhabitants and users of the Country Park, seems essentially unchanged, although they now seem to be making a virtue of the fact that the cables will be high above the forest canopy!! As soon as the application goes in we will notify as many people as possible so that that we can all make our views known at planning. We will of course, will be looking for all the support we can muster!! Nigel Shillito

Dr Christine’s letter - March 2011 I said farewell to a good and faithful friend of 30 years last week end. It was bright red, bulky, dirty but much loved. It kept me warm, then Nan afterwards [with Ruth as a youngster], it needed a lot of feeding and was difficult to clean. All of this done lovingly by Nan and me but Ruth did not care for it so much. So now it has gone to the scrap heap, winging its way over to China to be metal, holding up some big sky scraper. Yes it was my Rayburn. I await the transformation of Ruth's kitchen. As far as the county council is concerned the meeting on 8th February decided on a 2.9% increase in council tax for next year, with a £6.5 million reduction in spending without cuts to frontline services. [One wonders why they could not have done that earlier]. I am reliably informed that there are no bonuses or performance related payments being awarded this year to the senior officers/CEO The change in scrutiny structure also was passed by a good majority, although not entirely to my liking. We had 4 Scrutinies: Resources; Social Service and Housing; Environment and Regeneration; Lifelong Learning. This is being changed to 3 Communities; Partnerships; Performance. In these changes my queries were; Housing seems to be scattered as does Health between Communities and Partnerships so the expertise will be diluted. There will be eleven members on each scrutiny [up from 9] selected according to political groupings, which means we don't necessarily get the right people on the committees. The good thing is that these will start in May 2011 and will be reviewed before the next council elections in a year to see if they are working or not.
I am also back on a renewed and invigorated Community Health Council [CHC]. This was revamped last April much needed as it was toothless before. The only problem is that it is called Betsi Cadwaladr CHC which gives people the idea we are in cahoots with the Health Board which is certainly not the case. I am present in a café writing this as I am in Corwen and Llangollen visiting unannounced GP surgeries and announced Pharmacies. The changes in the health services are still under review due to the clamour from the general public about possible closures of consultant run maternity services and acute general surgery in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. So decisions about these are awaited. I have spent a good deal of time with the dogs watching Ruth throwing herself around the goal-mouth in hockey with great success and also singing in early music concerts. I was also invited by Radio Wales to be on the press programme 'Something Else' last Sunday 1.30pm, with 2 others, talking about the more frivolous aspects of the news. I managed to discuss same sex marriages in church? Which was a more serious subject. Spring cometh I will now have to get my garden tidied, so the bulbs can grow Regards Christine

Nature Notes An indication of how severe has been the weather this winter can be seen from the Lucombe oak (Quercus x hispania 'Lucombeana') on the A494 just past Plymog. Normally it retains its leaves right through the winter but does cast them off in particularly cold winters and it has done so this year. A cross between a Turkish oak and a Cork oak it is comparatively rare in this part of Britain and this specimen is protected by a Tree Preservation Order. In a winter like this there are always paradoxes. Some species like snowdrops, lesser celandine, foetid hellebores and butterbur have all flowered, more or less, on time but most trees are late in coming into leaf or flower. The male hazel catkins, for example, are not developed enough to be shedding pollen and the tiny, red female flowers have not yet appeared. Although elder, hawthorn, wild rose, gooseberry and honeysuckle are breaking into leaf, they are all later than usual and wild daffodils are going to have to hurry, if they are to flower in time for St David's Day, as their buds are not yet clear of the leaves. However, there are many seedlings etc sprouting up and growing rapidly such as cleavers, garlic mustard, wild arums, herb Bennet, herb Robert, cow parsley, greater celandine, field speedwell and others. So far, I have not seen any bumblebees which usually emerge from hibernation in February as soon as the temperature reaches
10째C, which it has on at least four occasions but, even if they did come out there are not many flowers for them to feed from. Birds are singing and some are getting ready for breeding. In the garden the notoriously polygamous (or more correctly polyandrogynous) dunnocks are looking very frisky as they pose before the females with drooping and quivering wings and flicking tails. Mallards are paired up, amorous ravens perform acrobatic ballads tumbling and swooping in the air and buzzards wheel high overhead uttering shrill mewing sounds. Rooks and herons are already building or repairing nests and some may have already laid eggs. Stranger still I thought I saw a swallow. It was only a brief sighting, of a few seconds, of a bird that swept across a field but it was fast and had the jinking flight of a swallow. Swallows often arrive in southern Britain in February and in 2004 I reported that they had been seen as far north as Pembrokeshire and I have seen them on mild North Wales coastal regions in March but Denbighshire in February seems unlikely. Yet if it had been May, I would have had no hesitation in saying it was a swallow. I'm afraid it is a case of 'my eyes say yes but my mind says no' yet in nature nothing is written in stone.
