News QUIZ NIGHT FUN Thank you to everyone who turned out for our Quiz Night on 18th February. There were 19 teams in total, which was great, and we were impressed with the amount of knowledge in the community! In total we raised £192, which was fantastic. We are hoping to buy a new colour printer to enable us to put more full colour into the News & Views - so this is a great start. We must thank all the prize givers too for their generosity and thanks to Julie & Jim for hosting the event and to Adrian for the sound system - not sure what we would have done without that! Thanks for the extra publicity too from Adrian & Sean. Just in case you missed it the winners were The Ever Hopefuls captained by Wendy Shillito. A full list of the results is in the table on the right. Wendy Shillito

Pictured above are the N and C team who were joint winners of the Ditloids competition with the Titanics. The tough questioning obviously took its toll on one or two members by the end of the evening.

Monthly Recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE

Wild Garlic Soup The wild garlic that grows prolifically around here is just emerging and the young leaves will soon be ready to pick. All parts of the plant are and can be eaten raw or cooked. It is claimed to have great health benefits, especially the leaves. The young leaves are the very best for picking. You only need a small handful - it is very powerful. Please don't pick anything in the countryside if there is only a few sprigs. Also, take care to pick well away from footpaths and potential dog weeing areas!!!! Recipe to serve 4 450g (1lb) potatoes 1 large onion 2 tbs olive oil 850ml vegetable stock about 8 - 10 leaves of wild garlic (washed) splash of cream if you're feeling extravagant salt and pepper to taste Heat the oil in a large pan and sweat the potatoes and onion for 10 - 15 minutes. Add roughly chopped or torn garlic leaves and stir to avoid sticking. The garlic should quickly turn limp. Add stock and bring to boil and simmer gently for 15 mins or until potatoes are soft. At this stage you can puree to create a smooth velvety soup or we tend to puree until just a few larger pieces are left and the garlic pieces are left intact. Taste (very important!!) and season with salt and pepper. Serve with good bread.

Each month Jane from Caffi Florence will be sharing one of her secret recipes from the menu at the Cafe. We’d also like to have contributions from other readers, so if you’d like to share one of your recipes with the rest of us please send it in to newsandviews@llanferres.org, phone us on 810566 or post to 2 Cae Gwyn, Llanferres

Cllr. Christine’s Monthly Update As your county councillor I have now resurfaced back to full time work for you having spent 10 weeks away at the end of last year. First I was in Iraqi Kurdistan and then Zambia and Zimbabwe. The state of the nation in the latter country is a wake up call to humanity. No running water in the taps and hence children drinking rain water from the pot holes in the street and hence the cholera, now more than 4000 have died. I have now retired from all medicine. I cancelled my GMC [General Medical Council] registration on purpose so I would not be tempted to carry on. Surgeons don’t improve over 65 years, so it is better not to go past one’s ‘sell by date’

Llandudno and Colwyn Bay every evening. It is run from the Dewi Sant Day Centre in Rhyl. We are desperate for drivers. I have driven the van for the first time this week and apart from kangarooing in first gear down the main street in Rhyl, I managed fine, found it good fun, rewarding and the punters good people although troubled and but for the grace of God many of us would be in the same situation. Also been to loads of meetings many of them distinctly turgid, speakers verbose, up their own backsides but the ones I like are to do with the rural affairs especially AONB, Heather and Hillforts, Coed Llandegla, Rural Transport and the Community Councils.

So enough from me now, next month A few things I have been doing... I am the Homelessness Champion I will enlarge on the Glebe Field appeal. for Denbighshire. Homelessness is not a sexy subject and one many of us ignore BUT all of us will be affected in the next 2 to 3 years as this recession gets worse. Everyone of you will soon know someone who has lost his/her job, have mortgage arrears or lose their home. SO DON’T GET SMUG. I am doing a sponsored sleepout on Rednose Day, Friday 13th March in Rhyl area, for these people. Mainly to raise awareness of their plight and also for the soup van which visits

Don’t forget we want drivers for the soup kitchen van. I can be contacted on 01824 780560 [answer phone, out a great deal], Mobile 07887774909 [leave message if no answer and I will return call] ChristineEvans@denbighshire.gov.uk Smithy Cottage Llanarmon yn Ial CH7 4QX

Your Views We understand that as part of its Cost Cutting plans Denbighshire County Council are considering axing the Mobile Library Service. This would be a blow, not only to Llanferres, Maeshafn and Tafarn-y-Gelyn but to all the rural areas in the county. People without transport, especially the handicapped and elderly, would be faced with having to carry books to and from either Mold or Ruthin. During Winter months, when we need our books most, it would be even worse. Other people can (and do) help with shopping but can't choose books for us.

- thank you from LPFRA Alan Fraser kindly donated his time, and his manager, Dave Burke, of Tarmac Howatson in Ruthin kindly donated equipment and materials to fix cracks in the path in the Llanferres Park & Playground. This gesture is much appreciated, not just by the Llanferres Playing Field and Recreation Association (LPFRA), but also by the many users of the park & playground. Sean Thomas (Committee member)

We need to fight this move, and I'm sure it would help if as many people as possible write in to object to it.

Nature Notes With snow lying on the ground food becomes scarce for birds and they turn to items that they would otherwise ignore. Examples of which are ivy berries and rose hips. Many birds ignore ivy berries because they have a bitter taste (or so 1 am told but 1 have never tried them), but when there is nothing else available the berries can become lifesavers. Wood pigeons, on the other hand, seem to eat them with relish even when there are other food sources. Rose hips, however, are sweet and one would think that birds would love them yet they usually hang on the hedges right through the winter. During the last few weeks 1 have noticed that they are disappearing as blackbirds, greenfinches and others feed on them. 1 always find it surprising that they are not taken because as well as being sweet they are full of vitamin C. Readers of a certain age will remember that as children, during the war years, we were regularly given a teaspoonful of, Government issued, rose-hip syrup to keep us healthy and also syrup of figs and the vile tasting cod-liver oil (now mercifully available in capsule form). Why does it seem that garden pests survive the winter better than beneficial creatures, or is it just a false impression? No sooner had the snow melted than 1 found a 3 inch/80 mm slug (Arion ater) crawling across the drive. Often called the Great black slug, this species comes in a variety of colours such as grey, brown,

brick-red or orange but they are all the same species. The following day 1 found a Garden snail (Helix aspersa) six feet up the wall of the house. 1 had hoped the severe frosts would have killed off many slugs and snails but these two had survived well enough. On a cold day with snow covering the ground 1 listened to a great spotted woodpecker drumming on a hollow tree and in the clear air the sound carried a long distance. Both sexes drum to let others of their species know that they are available for pairing and that they have laid claim to a territory. 1 heard two birds at widely separated locations but on each occasion they only drummed for a couple of minutes and then fell silent. Perhaps they were just practising, ready for more serious business when the weather warms up. However, many other birds are already coming into full song. This morning 1 heard mistle thrush, blackbird, wren, dunnock, robin, great tit, blue tit, coal tit, wood pigeon, collared dove, greenfinch and chaffinch not to mention jackdaw, crow and rook and later a buzzard was 'mewing' overhead. Add to that the fact that elder, hawthorn, rose, sycamore, willow, hazel and other buds are loosening and showing the first signs of growth, all within a week of the snow melting, and we cannot deny that spring is trying to shoulder winter out of the way.

News The diary of Christine Evans’ last ever Urolink trip to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique November 2008 Week Two: Sunday 9th to Friday 14th November

on the man who had travelled from Lusaka.

The second week of the trip got off to a good start! I set out for Monze by bus in the evening and set my alarm to wake me in time for my stop. I quickly fell asleep. Unfortunately my alarm did not go off, so I missed my stop and ended up in Choma 100km further along the route! I had to take a very wonky taxi back from Choma to Monze which cost $100 before I finally arrived safely at 02.3 0 am.

During our time in Monze, we witnessed or heard about A&E Zambian style. A child came in with a snake bite to his face. He was wonderfully intubated, but died of the effects of the venom on the way to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka. No anti snake venom here.

Jaimin and Michael Breen (the gynaecologist at Monze) had spent the evening doing burr holes (drill holes in the skull) on a young lad who was involved in a road traffic accident. The casualty did well from the operation but sadly died later with breathing problems; there are no ventilators here. The next day we started operating. Jaimin had a great week he was taught how to do a VVF (repair to the bladder and the vagina due to problems in childbirth). He did an open prostactectomy (removal of part of the prostate) and open removal of a bladder stone. Michael did a great repair on a lass who had both a VVF and RVF, (repair to the rectum), and I did a procedure to correct a narrowing of the urethra

There was a man who had fallen out of a tree (it was mango picking season) who died of a tension pneumothorax (air between the lung and the chest wall, under pressure), as he was inadequately managed by the junior doctors. He was left for one and a half hours without anyone putting a wide bore needle in his chest as they could not find a chest drain. Following this incident Jaimin gave a talk at 7am the next morning to the medics on the management of trauma. It was apparently excellent and somewhat critical in view of the previous day’s debacle – I was sorry to have missed it – but badly needed my sleep! At the end of the week Jaimin left for Kenya to visit his family and I did my last operation ever after 42 years as a doctor.
