News & Views 3

Welcome Welcome to the May edition of News & Views. Whilst the unseasonably warm weather (at the time of writing!) has cheered us all up, we’re sorry to see Brian, Moira and Declan Bonnar leave the village - we wish them all the very best in their new home - not too far away - in Llanarmon. We were very sorry to hear of the death of David Scruton, who has contributed so much to the community in his time here. And we know he will be sadly missed by many. Our thoughts are with his wife and family. (See page 4).

Hall Committee is also looking for more support and for increased use of the Hall. If you can spare any time for a worthy local cause, please give it some serious thought, and watch out for details of the all-important AGMs. Remember, please send contributions by the 20th of the month for inclusion in the following month’s News & Views. Llanferres Parish Gardening Club At the meeting held on Monday April 11th, our guest speaker was Mr Idris Evans, his talk "Cattle Drovers of Wales". Not gardening, but a most entertaining evening followed. Having moved to Rhewl near the Drovers' Arms, he found "Anglesey Pennies" in his garden. Not money but tokens used by drovers when walking with animals 300 miles from Anglesey to London - tokens made of copper from Parys Mountain. Thus started a trail of discovery for Mr Evans to research and now to talk of "drovers" and their trek. After wading across the Menai Straits to the mainland, down past Tal-y-cafn over the Denbigh moors, perhaps stopping at the Hawk and Buckle for the cockfighting, they collected more stock to take to London. On the three week journey cows needed shoes, pigs needed socks and geese needed a tar(pitch) covering, all to protect their feet. Down through Rhewl, Llanarmon, Llandegla, past Valle Crucis Abbey onto Shrewsbury and finally stopping near Chelmsford, where land had been purchased, to rest and fatten their stock before going on to London markets. So much more was spoken of - the pine trees planted to mark their way, the promissory notes given to farmers for their stock - the tokens given to separate flocks of the farmers and so much more. Many members bought Mr Evans book "Hard Road to London" to relive a talk which had been given by a great raconteur. Our next meeting will be on Monday May 9th when Mrs Kate Roscoe will talk about design ideas from Yellow Book Gardens..

Monthly recipe sponsored by CAFFI FLORENCE Chicken & Bacon Caesar Salad The fantastic April weather has got us thinking salads much earlier than we normally would. This is a classic Caesar Salad recipe that is so much more delicious for having a homemade dressing. We make this dish using free range chicken from Arwel Jones in Llanbedr that is available from John Jones butchers in Ruthin. We add Williams and Bonham home cured bacon to some lovely fresh & colourful salad leaves. to serve 4 2 good handfuls green leaves 2 chicken breasts 4 rashers bacon 4 tomatoes Dressing 100g Parmesan cheese 100ml mayonnaise juice 1 lemon 2 cloves garlic 1 tbsp White wine vinegar 2 tbsp olive oil splash Worcester sauce warm water Salt & pepper Grill or pan fry the chicken and bacon. Place all dressing ingredients except water into a blender and mix. Add warm water to obtain a thick but pourable consistency. Place leaves in a dish, arrange chicken and bacon and add tomatoes followed by the dressing.

Diane tells me they are quite used to moving (Vicars are often in post only between 5 and 10 years as this Parish can testify). We wish them the very best for the move and welcome them wholeheartedly into our village. Adrian has recently been told that he will be appointed Area Dean of the Deanery of Mold as Rev'd Ian Day, the current Dean, will be moving to take over the Parishes of Bodelwyddan and Rhuddlan in September. The Deanery of Mold comprises 16 churches in 7 groupings; however Deanery boundaries are currently under review. Park & Playground AGM – members needed please!!! Why Membership? Llanferres Playing Field and Recreation Association (LPFRA) is a registered charity. The charity constitution requires a membership from which to elect its management committee to run all aspects of the Park & Playground. Over the past few years the membership has diminished to a point where it is at a worryingly low level. This notice is to invite you all to consider becoming a member …. and attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will take place within next 2 months. Llanferres has a track record of supporting community events, and was especially strong when the LPFRA first started. There was fantastic support for putting on shows, line-dancing, sponsorship to raise our own funds but volunteering time was (and continues to be) essential as evidence of community commitment when applying for grants (e.g. planting 2,000 trees and shrubs, building the retaining barriers for safety surface, securing donations of materials… and many more). From a simple and bare farmer’s field to an award winning Park & Playground was the result of the community’s hard work …. we now need the resurrect that spirit to make sure the Park & Playground is an enduring local facility. Mums and Dads warmly welcomed! Anyone and everyone is welcome to become members but we would specifically encourage parents with children of school age - the main users of the playground – to spare a few hours throughout the year. There’s always been support for working parties and fund raising events (not least the mountain bike marshalling) but there are many other activities that we need volunteers for – a case of “many hand make light work”. . Planning for the future? Of equal importance is the need for succession planning for the Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman officers on the management committee. Thankfully, we have had a steady flow of volunteers prepared to take on these roles … and we are anxious to build up the membership to keep this going. There are several “subcommittees” taking responsibility for initiatives where it is maintenance or fund raising to work on … so hopefully you can make yourself available to attend the AGM (or as a minimum become a member) and hopefully volunteer to share the workload. Thank you for your attention .. and look out for the notice of the AGM. Please contact any one of the current committee to find out more:- Dan Hurst, Simon Hodge, Nick Lennon, Gordon Jones, Paul Gothorp, Tim Griffith, Sean Thomas, Bob Barton, Rob Armstrong, Julie Dolan, Jim Dolan, Mel Berry, David Clough, Roger Llewellyn, Jackie Godfrey

Dr Christine’s letter - May 2011 Council work is carrying on with the new Scrutinies starting the beginning of May. I went to the new Nant Yr Mor Extra Care housing in Prestatyn, this is available to anyone in Denbighshire over 60 years and is the way forward for the elderly, much better than a nursing or residential home and the council much less. The apartments, 50 in all, are of different sizes for singles or couples [so they can stay together] and pets are allowed. They can be bought or rented and the rent is reasonable and you can get on housing benefits. There are plenty of disabled persons there, loads of mobility scooters were all being charged up in the basement. The package of care can vary on how much help you need. There will also be similar in Ruthin at Awelon later in the year so get your name down if you are interested. On the 9th April I went with Ruth to the finals of the Plate which is a knockout female hockey competition for the whole of Wales. Ruthin Ladies team was playing Whitchurch from Cardiff who on paper are a stronger team. Ruthin against the run of play went in front. Whitchurch caught up and overtook them, then we scored from a breakaway. Score 2:2.. So to extra time and then penalty flicks. I was chain smoking near the entrance but could still see. I was more nervous than Ruth [in goal]. She must be really scary as she stopped 2 flicks and put off their best shooter, who missed and so Ruthin, the minnows, won. Great celebration! The Three Taverns walk with the choir on April 16th was great fun We went on foot from the Sun Eryrys to the Rose and Crown Grianrhydd to the Raven with families and dogs. The singing got better as we got

more tired and consumed more ale. A few did not walk, myself included. Thanks to all who took part and to Ruth our enthusiastic choirmistress. We should do it again. For the youth club there is a Sponsored Walk on Sunday May 1st. The distance is 5 miles run by Ruthin Rotary. We can raise money for equipment for when we go in to the Old Schoolroom renovated late summer. We will leave 10.30 from The Raven, the start and finish is at the tennis club in Ruthin, Cost £1 child, £3 adult, £6 family Sponsor forms with me. I am also arranging fishing at Gweryd Lakes at half term Wed 1st June 3-7pm. Those interested let me know, younger siblings and adults welcome. The cost will be reasonable. I could do with a parent or 2 for the younger children to stop them pushing each other in I hear from The AONB meeting mid April that there will be police enforcement and parking fines on the Cadole road at Loggerheads over Easter. We will know by the time we read this. Here is hoping. Happy Springtime Regards Christine christinemaryevans@hotmail.com

Nature Notes No sooner had I sent in last month's nature Notes than the summer migrants began to arrive. I heard my first chiffchaff on 25th March and saw my first wheatear on 28th, the same day a lady from Tafarn-yGelyn kindly telephoned to tell me she had been watching two swallows flying in her garden (I had to wait another two days before I saw one). My first willow warbler was on 8th April and within a week they were everywhere. On 18th April I heard both blackcap and garden warbler in full song. These two sound so very alike that I have known 'birders' to almost come to blows arguing as to which they were hearing. I was fortunate in that 'my' two birds were singing in almost adjacent trees so I was able to get a direct comparison. On 19th April I saw my first redstart, despite its determination to thwart me by singing behind a branch, where I had difficulty in getting a good look at it, but eventually it showed itself. Even in the garden, bird life is becoming more interesting. The flock of siskins, which has been with us for most of the winter, has been joined by a pair of redpolls. These small finches, with a red forehead and black bib, are seed feeders with a particular predilection for birch and alder. Besides the birds heralding the warmer months, butterflies are also emerging from their winter quarters. So far I have recorded seven species - large white, greenveined white, small white, orange tip, speckled wood, peacock, small tortoiseshell and comma. It is interesting to note the survival

strategies of the different species. The last three over winter as adult butterflies hiding in ivy, tree holes, caves or garden sheds etc while the whites and the orange tip do so as pupae. The orange tip pupal stage lasts about ten months - from late June to mid-April - but the butterfly itself only lives about eighteen days. The speckled wood is unique among British butterflies in that it can overwinter in two stages, either as a larva or as a pupa. In the larval stage it does not hibernate but will feed even in winter when the weather is particularly mild. Although individual butterflies only live about three weeks the species can be seen anytime from the end of March until November because it produces three generations per year. I recently met a lady who was standing near the trunk of a large, dead tree looking somewhat perplexed. She drew my attention to a knocking sound that seemed to be coming from the tree without there being any visible cause. I was able to solve the mystery by explaining that it was a greatspotted woodpecker which was excavating a nest hole inside the tree and showed her the chips of wood, at the tree base, that the bird had ejected from the hole. She looked visibly relieved. She had been wondering if it could have been the death watch beetle or, maybe, she might have thought it was some sort of voodoo. There was certainly an unearthly quality to the sound. John Almond
