Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting on Monday April 20th had Simon Farr, of North Wales Wildlife Trust, as guest speaker. His talk entitled “Orchards of N.E. Wales” covered not only those already growing but also a project to encourage everyone aged three years upwards to grow fruit trees, particularly Welsh varieties. Mr Farr spoke of his work to find old orchards and identify species that were traditionally grown and, therefore, especially suitable for a particular area. This was a talk that produced good interest in his work and the growing of fruit trees. The next meeting will be on Monday May 11th when Kevin Pratt returns to give a talk entitled “The Bulb Year”. This talk was scheduled for October but, because of Mr Pratt’s other commitments, has had to be brought forward to May. Visitors are most welcome at £1 per meeting, whilst membership is £4 per annum. Monthly Recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Chocolate Tiffin This is a very popular cake at the café. It is fantastic with a coffee after a long walk. You do need to have the walk as it is pretty calorie laden!! You can of course cut it into smaller pieces and feel less guilty. It is a great recipe to make with small children. It needs no cooking just some good mixing. If you don't like nuts these can be left out or replaced with some small marshmallows or glace cherries. We use good quality plain chocolate with 54% cocoa solids but you can use milk chocolate if you prefer. 250g digestive biscuits 75g raisins 75g hazelnuts (optional) 100g butter or margarine 25g sugar 2 teaspoons golden syrup 150g chocolate Break the biscuits into a large bowl (be careful not to crush too much). Add the raisins and nuts and mix. Melt the sugar, syrup, butter and chocolate and mix together. This can either be done in the microwave - I minute on full power should do it, or in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. When completely melted add to the biscuit mixture and mix until all biscuit and fruit is covered in chocolate mix. Press the mixture into a lined 20cm square tin or dish. Cover with cling film and place in fridge for minimum 4 hours. Cut into squares and serve. Each month Jane from Caffi Florence shares one of her secret recipes from the menu at the Cafe. We’d also like to have contributions from other readers, so if you’d like to share one of your recipes with the rest of us - please send it in to newsandviews@llanferres.org, phone us on 810566 or post to 2 Cae Gwyn, Llanferres

Married v Singles Take One It was a match of 3 halves - well four quarters really with 20 mins each way followed by a further 10 minutes each way, before the marrieds were carried off and given oxygen! Playing for the Singles team were Tom Healy, Richard Hughes, Jac Armstrong, Dave Logan, James Logan and Max Griffiths. For the Marrieds team were Paddy Carney, Paul Gothorp, Dan Hurst, Guy Woodcock (injured in pre-match boot lace tying activity) Barry Roberts, Derek Evans and Rob (the legs) Edwards.

Goal of the match was a close call between goalkeeper Derek Evan’s full length of the pitch punt and Barry Bingo’s spectacular two touch goal from one end of the pitch to the other without oxygen!

The WAGS provided refreshments (for themselves) and encouragement from the sidelines ("can you nip home at half time and get the cork screw please dear?")

The final score was 7:3 (we think) to the Marrieds and a post match debrief took place in the Druid for the rest of the afternoon. A second match is planned for the next Bank A great game was enjoyed by Holiday weekend on Sunday 3 May at players and spectators alike with 11am. fine sportsmanship and glorious weather all afternoon. Esther’s Easter Missio Esther Skelhorn returned from her Youth Mission Project Trip to South Africa on Easter Sunday. She was tired after working hard and the very long journey, but feels it was worthwhile and she would like to thank everyone in the community who supported and encouraged her and contributed to the £950 she had to raise in order to participate. She was part of a group of 160 adults and young people from all over the UK who went to work at The Ebenezer Care Centre in Grasmere, a Township on the outskirts of Johannesburg, during Holy Week. They had each raised £950 and promised to work hard for at least 40 hours. Most of the money was spent on building materials and the 160 were

divided into 5 groups. Each group was asked to build a single storey, 3 roomed home for a homeless family. Johannesburg is the fastest growing city in South Africa and the venue for the World Cup 2010, but there are many homeless people. They can be seen trying to sleep in the grass borders next to roads and around 20 homeless families turned up at the Care Centre in just one day. Esther was surprised to learn that a family of up to 12 people would be living in the house she was helping to build. Some of the homeless people and the orphans helped with the house-building and they were very positive and hopeful. They all share a strong faith in God and enjoy regular, enthusiastic worship.

Memories of Llanferres My first visit to this lovely part of the country was in 1951, when I stayed at the Youth Hostel at Maeshafn for a weekend, enjoying exploring footpaths beside streams, over fields and up Moel Famau, which was then covered in heather, bracken and bilberry; there were hardly any trees then, just the odd rowan or silver birch. Later on, an old wooden caravan was offered to us for weekend breaks. It was parked in a very pretty little field at Tafarn-y-Gelyn. The field was divided by a sparking little stream, from which we collected our water, and which disappeared down a “swallow hole” under the roots of a mighty ash tree. It was from this caravan that we got to know Steve Macfarlane, who lived near(by). In the autumn of 1952 we heard about the proposal to build a village hall on a site near the Church in Llanferres, which had been designed by Steve, who was an architect. A team from the International Voluntary Service for Peace had arrived to help get things started. Two of our group were able to be at the valley that weekend and went to the site to meet the volunteers and give what help they could, which turned out to be helping to get meals ready and clear up afterwards. They had a busy time before having to go back to the Wirral on Sunday evening. There were 15 volunteers from various countries and over the 3 weeks that they were in the valley they were accommodated at the various local farms, as well as at the Druid and the Rectory. Rev. And Mrs. Lewis were keenly interested in the project and their house was very much in use, as that’s where the volunteers had their meals. There were also other people helping with the beginning, laying down foundations etc. There were some local people and professionals who directed the work.

On Friday 31st October 1952 a larger group of us came out to the valley. As it was Hallowe’en there was a party at the farm, where the loft of a barn had been brushed out for dancing. The invitation was to the volunteers and to our group. Country dancing was in vogue at the time and we had an enjoyable time, not just with English dances, but also learning Canadian Square Dances. When we were exhausted from our exertions we returned to the caravan for refreshments. It was quite a squash! As he came in, Dennis, one of the volunteers, was heard to ask whether the wheels were meant to be semi-circular! Over coffee and cake, some people started ghost stories and then we got to singing and learning each others songs as we chatted and roasted chestnuts on the little open range in the van, until it was time for the volunteers to leave. The next day most of our group went down to the site to help with whatever we could. In my case it was making stacks of marmalade sandwiches for the midmorning break, and in the afternoon wheeling barrows about with loads of bricks or the constituents of cement. In the evening we congregated again at the farm for more dancing and then went into the farm this time for refreshments, singing and chatting. It was quite late when we left the party and a lovely moonlit night, so we set out in a group to escort the volunteers back to their various billets. On Sunday, not much was going on at the site and sadly, we had to leave this beautiful valley again and go down to Loggerheads to catch the bus back to ordinary life. And so ended a happy weekend in the Alyn Valley, which had been full of singing, dancing and laughter, and a certain amount of hard work for a good cause.

Nature Notes It is amazing how migrants suddenly arrive. Knowing they were due, I had been looking and listening for summer migrants for several days but had not found any, except for chiffchaffs which had been in for some time. Then on Easter Saturday there was, what birdwatchers call, a fall of migrants. This is when they arrive in considerable numbers and just seem to fall out of the sky, which I suppose in truth they do. Willow warblers were singing their muted song and blackcaps were singing most vociferously. There seemed to be a blackcap, either male or female, in almost every bush in the area where I found them. They were also dashing about chasing each other but whether it was males pursuing females or males trying to drive off rivals I was not able to tell, they were moving so fast. Swallows and house martins have been reported in good numbers in Llanarmon yn Lal but numbers are still low in Llanferres at the time of writing. Those of us who hauled ourselves out of bed for the 4.50am pickup to go to Coed Llandegla to see the black grouse were rewarded with a beautiful morning. Although it was somewhat cool at first, the sun came up to warm us and the visibility was good. Yes, we did see the grouse! We could hear their bubbling calls well before we got to the RSPB hide and once there we were able to see at least seven males(black cocks) displaying at the lek. The females, or grey hens as they are called, are very difficult to see as they usually stay hidden in the

heather. However, they had been told we were coming so they obligingly put on a show for us. Not only did we see them in the heather but one female sat atop a small conifer for some time to give us excellent views, quite a 'poser' in fact. Other birds recorded included:- willow warbler, song thrush, blackbird, wren, pied wagtail, stonechat, curlew, pheasant, meadow pipit, coal tit, blue tit, great tit, swallow, wood pigeon, chaffinch, Canada geese and we may (just may) have heard a grasshopper warbler. Not a bad list for a couple of hours. Many thanks to Rhun Jones for organising the trip - enjoyed by all! I can recommend it to anyone who has an interest in birds - it is well worth the effort of getting up early. The warm weather of the last few days has brought out a few butterflies. I have seen green veined whites, peacocks, orange tips and comma. The peacocks and commas will have over-wintered as adult butterflies but the other two will have survived as pupae or chrysalides. The orange tip will have been in this state for up to eight months. But where are the small tortoiseshells? This used to by our commonest butterfly and they should be coming out of hibernation now and we should be seeing them in good numbers but, so far, I have not seen any. As I reported in last September's issue, they had a terrible time last year and one fears for the survival of the species.
