Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday October 12th began with the business section as usual. This was followed by two films – 1) “How to garden organically” and 2) “How to grow container plants”. Each contained some good ideas for general gardening without being too technical. Most members present found a few new tips. Our next meeting will be on Monday November 9th at 7.30pm. It will be our AGM followed by a talk entitled “Look north – from Anglesey to the Arctic” by the Rev Hugh Linn. As always, visitors (£1) or new members will be most welcome. In his report Cllr Holland indicated that the falling school roll and the consequential reduction in the school budget has meant the loss of the equivalent of one full time member of staff. Projected pupil numbers for 2010 onwards suggest that further staffing cuts may be required. Mrs Sian Hilton, Headteacher, has resigned with effect from December 31st. Interviews will be held shortly to appoint Mrs Hilton`s successor. Arrangements for the movement of pupils between the two sites are under review.

Church News Services in November 1st 8th 5th 22nd 22nd 29th
Holy Communion at 9.30 a.m. Remembrance Sunday Service at 10 a.m. & at war memorial at 11 Holy Communion at 9.30 a.m. Holy Communion at 9.30 a.m. Group Churches 'Together at 6' at other venue to be announced 5th Sunday - Communion at 10.30 a.m.
New Service Times (Reverend Adrian Copping) As Llanferres is now part of a group of five parishes (with Gwernaffield, Rhydymwyn, Cilcain, and Nannerch) a new pattern of services has become necessary. The churchwardens of all five parishes and myself have now been able to agree the new pattern which will start from the first Sunday in November. Obviously major events and festivals (such as Remembrance Day, Easter, and Christmas) may result in special arrangements - keep reading this magazine for details! The new pattern is - 1st Sunday of Month - Holy Communion at 9.30am; 2nd Sunday - Family Service at 11.00 am; 3rd Sunday - Holy Communion at 9.30am; 4th Sunday Holy Communion at 9.30am. When there is a 5th Sunday there will be a grouped parishes Holy Communion service at any one of the five at 10.30 am (on Sunday 29 November it's Llanferres' turn to be host). A new 'Together at 6' service (following various forms) will also take place in different churches on the 4th Sunday of most months - please watch out for details especially of the one to be arranged on Sunday 22 November. Christmas Fair Saturday 28th November, 2 - 4 p.m. Please make a note in your diaries for our Christmas Fair. Many of you made chutney and jam for us last year and we are hoping we shall have another superb display of homemade produce. There are many other stalls, not to mention Wendy's cake stall. Wendy is happy to take orders for cakes. Many thanks to all who contributed and helped towards decorating the Church for the Harvest services. The Church looked beautiful. The donated produce has been taken to the Family refuge at Plas Bellin. Also thanks to the many local people besides Inner Wheel Club of Mold who supported the Inner Wheel coffee morning at Daryl's house for 'Children with Leukaemia'. The total raised is ÂŁ229 - every penny of which will go to the charity. Please also see separate article 'Something about the New Vicar' from Reverend Adrian Copping.

News for pensioners The Welsh Assembly Government has made a £2m grant available to local authorities to provide a scheme to help pensioners with their Council Tax. Denbighshire has been awarded £77,000. Pensioners who can answer yes to the following questions can apply to the Denbighshire scheme Ÿ Are you in receipt of state pension? Ÿ Are you liable to pay council tax in Denbighshire? Ÿ Is the address you are claiming for your main home? The closing date for applications is 1st December 2009. The grant allocation will be divided between all the applicants and credited to their council tax accounts. Local Government Minister Dr Brian Gibbons launched the scheme last week in Rhyl saying "Denbighshire's scheme targets those pensioners who are not in receipt of welfare benefits, including council tax benefit, and so help those who are in need, but not eligible for financial assistance. He added: "This scheme will deliver on our 'One Wales' commitment to help pensioners with their council tax." Denbighshire's Cabinet Lead Member for Health, Social Care and Well-being, Councillor Pauline Dobb, said: "I am delighted that the Denbighshire scheme will help our residents who receive a pension but who do not normally receive assistance with their council tax bill." To apply write to: Pensioner Grant Scheme, Revenues Department, Russell House, Churton Road, Rhyl, Denbighshire, LL18 3DP (Thanks to Bob Barton for this piece)

Llanferres W.I. President Mrs Maureen Hill took the Chair. Apologies for absence were received from five members. Records of meetings in June & July were read by Mrs Gay Headley in the absence of both Secretary and Vice-Secretary. Outings to Welshpool and Ruthin Castle had been greatly enjoyed by those members who attended. Treasurer Mrs Beryl Davies presented her report and said the books were being audited. She was thanked for her continued efforts by all members. Several items of correspondence had been received and were made available for members to read, including a card from Gwernymyndd W.I. congratulating us on our 80th anniversary. The Newsletter was discussed then arrangements finalised for the Leete Group Autumn Meeting later in the month. The Raffle was won by Mrs Beryl Hughes and Mrs Trish Jones. As several members have decided not to continue membership next year, it was resolved that next month’s AGM will be a special suspension meeting, with a VCO present to follow protocol. All members are to be informed of this and asked to attend or notify their intentions; the secretary to write to all members and the president to notify the Federation. Refreshments were served by Mrs Hughes and Mrs Betty Cook. In the absence of the member who was to provide this afternoon’s entertainment, Mrs Headley gave a short “Random Quiz” which was won by Mrs Hughes, 2nd Mrs Joan Almond. There was no competition. Next month: AGM. and Mrs Vera Stobbs on “Memories of the forces” Competition; Wartime memorabilia

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE We have recently held a workshop on cooking for a family using locally sourced food on a budget. This recipe was a great success and uses lots of seasonal vegetables available in local farm shops and markets. It has the added benefit of using up left over bits of bread and the vegetable combination can be any that are lurking in your fridge. We using Snowdonia Thunder which is made in North Wales and is a strong hard cheese with herbs and garlic. Blue cheese also works very well.
Vegetable Charlotte 2 large carrots 2 large potatoes ½ swede 2 onions 2 cloves of garlic 2 sticks celery 400g red kidney beans 1/tsp chilli powder ½ pt water/vegetable stock 5 chunky slices of bread cut into 2cm cubes 5 tbsp olive oil 100g grated cheese - the tastier the better Add 2tbsp of the oil to a pan and heat gently. Add chopped onion and when softening add garlic and other diced vegetables. Heat slowly avoiding sticking to bottom of pan. Add chilli powder and stir until powder absorbed into vegetables. Add water or stock and simmer slowly until vegetables are soft. Add kidney beans and heat gently. Transfer to oven proof dish and spread over the bread cubes. Drizzle the remaining olive oil over the bread. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the bread. Cook at 180 C , gas 4/5 for 25mins until cheese is melted and bread golden.
Serve with a green vegetable – broccoli or savoy cabbage is great

An Update from Cllr. Christine I hope you all have had a good a good summer. I was in Malawi teaching medical students in Blantyre for 3 weeks, whilst my daughter Ruth was with a group of 12 youngsters from the Ruthin area building a school room and decorating/ repairing school desks and benches. They had great fun. Yes they still have benches in schools over there!! I also then went to St Petersburgh to see the Hermitage and Winter Palace, which was brilliant. Now back to work There is a meeting with the CEO of Denbighshire CC on the 4th Nov I have decided to take him to Caffi Florence, Loggerheads. He will be there at 2.30 for half an hour to meet your community council and other interested people. He is also visiting Llandegla and Llanarmon in the same afternoon so sorry he will only be there for a short time. He is anxious to meet people and hear your views but don't overwhelm him with complaints, - you can do that to me! My surgery on Sat 24th in the Druid will have been held by the time you read this. Jac Armstrong is helping me, so you will know one of us. If it is well attended I will hold another one soon. I am here to help you. I am getting better at finding my way around the pitfalls of contacting DCC. It is a minefield and one thing our new CEO, Mo-
hammed Mehmet, has promised is easier access for complaints for the electorate, faster response times and more effective local government. There will be cuts this year as there is a credit crunch BUT I think it is recognised that the reduction in verge and hedge cutting down to once a year was a mistake. The senior management of the council is being trimmed down to make savings, hopefully this will help to keep the council tax down. The meetings I enjoy the most are to do with the AONB/Heather and Hillforts/Moel Findeg, I hope you all make good use of them. The car parking at Cadole is under review [slowly]. I think we are very lucky to be living in such a beautiful area and with good outdoor facilities near us. The Rural Transport Forum takes place shortly so let me have your thoughts on the buses please. My great joy is that the Raven Inn is open again so I can now hobble up the road for company and a pint. Without bankrupting your local hostelries please come and have a meal and support this community effort. It is run by village volunteers. Fish and chips on Friday is a must, 5.30 to 8.30pm! Next letter in December but have a good Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes night. Regards Christine Evans 01824780560 07887774909

THANK YOU FOR HELPING TO RAISE ÂŁ1200 FOR CLATTERBRIDGE CANCER RESEARCH! A massive thank you to everyone who came along to 50 Hertz live on the 10th October. We raised almost ÂŁ1200 for Clatterbridge Cancer Research. The monies raised will go towards brain tumour research, and will be credited to the David Moore Tribute Fund. This year would have marked David's 50th birthday, and I am sure that he would be delighted that not only did we mark his birthday in true style, but also that we made a significant contribution to his chosen charity. So many thank you's to pass on! To 50 Hertz for entertaining us in style; Colin for providing the disco, and Lucy and Debs for running it all evening. To Julie and Jim at the Druid who kindly donated all of their bar profits on the night, and especially to Eleanor "bar person extraordinaire", who pulled a record number of pints, dealt with a flood and was still smiling at the end of the night! To everyone who donated raffle prizes: Loggerheads Garage; Fran, Denise and Jackie; Zax Menswear (Danny); Brew Coffee Shop; Miners Arms, Maeshafn, and Laura Novelli hairdressing. To everyone who helped set up, clear up and wash up! Rhiann who made a dash for more glasses! Sarah for manning the door. To Simon for braving the big ladder and putting up the disco balls! And of course June, who pulled everything together, and did an amazing job selling tickets! THANKS SO MUCH! CHRISTINE MOORE

Llanferres Conker Club – 2009 Championships Yet another successful conker tournament kindly hosted by The Druid Inn and for once the weather was dry but with gusty winds in later rounds. There must be a technique to conkers (I’m still looking for it!) because last year’s Junior Champion won the competition again – so congratulations to champion Nick Prtak who demonstrated brilliant hand-eye co-ordination, punishing swings and very effective tactics to overcome 7 year old Louis Frier who travelled with his family from Chester for the event. The Senior champion is Sheila Hawkes, also a previous champion proving yet again there is a technique to winning. Sheila met her sister Gilly Carney in the final having already disposed of her brother-in-law Paddy Carney in the semi-final. The trophies were presented by Ibeth Wall, originally from Colombia who took part in her first conker competition … and managed to at least get through to the 2nd round unlike (yet again!) yours truly.
Nick Prtak and Sheila Hawkes Thank you to all who entered the competitions and please wish the champions well in their year of honour. Huge praise must go to the volunteer referees, especially Simon Hodge and Les Leath.to name but a few, and to Jonni Griffiths for doing an excellent job at clearing up the shattered losing conkers. Also thanks to Tim Griffiths for a good supply of conkers. It was great to see Simon Hodge at the event given his recent hospitalisation, and also to see Jack Hawkes out for a few half-pints (or was it whiskey?) after his recent time in hospital. £10.50 profit from the day has been donated to News & Views.

Nature Notes Whilst taking part in the annual 'clean-up' of the community pond at Tafarn y Gelyn we found spiral wandering snails, water shrimps and water slaters (an aquatic type of wood lice) clinging to the vegetation and it was pleasing to see the number of frogs present. These ranged in colour from the usual olive green through to almost black and we also found a large, almost black, toad. We were a little surprised to find many immature newts still present as these have usually left the pond by now. However, their development may have been delayed by the coolish summer or if the water is humus rich that can delay maturity. Some still retained the feathery-like gills, with which they extract oxygen from the water, and it is possible that these specimens may not be able to reach a sufficient stage of maturity to leave the water by the end of November. In which case they will hibernate (or more correctly go into a state of torpidity) in the bottom of the pond and renew development in the spring, when the water warms up. Newts do not normally breed until they are three to four years old so this delay should not affect them unduly. Readers passing from the church into Cae Derwen may have noticed a clump of fungi growing near to the gate. It is the variety Tricholomopsis rutilans also known as Plums and custard. It is custard-yellow in colour but covered in reddish-purple scales - hence the common name- which gradually disappear
leaving the whole crown bright yellow just before it starts to disintegrate. It grows on conifer stumps and is considered by some to be edible but is not recommended. Every year throws up some oddities and this year is no exception. In late September I saw an apple tree laden with mature fruit but also carrying heads of fully open flowers. I wonder if they would develop into fruit if we have a very mild winter or with global warming? I doubt it! On the 8th of October, in two locations, I heard the song of a willow warbler. Its close relative the chiffchaff sometimes overwinters in Britain but I do not think I have ever heard of willow warblers doing so. Probably, they were just passing through on migration or were they laying claim to a territory for next year? The same question arose with a pair of house martins. We have an artificial nest attached to the house which has been used by house martins in the past but been occupied by sparrows this year. Just before the house martins left on migration in early October, I noticed a pair round the nest. First one entered the nest and called loudly with its head protruding from the entrance then it flew out and was replaced by the other. They really did look as though they were discussing the merits of the site for next year or am I being too anthropomorphic?
