News & Views 3

Welcome Welcome to the November edition of News & Views. It's another busy calendar of events this month! . As in previous years we plan to carry a Christmas Greetings page in the December issue, for anyone wishing to send a message to local friends and neighbours in lieu of Christmas cards. If you would like to include a Christmas Greeting, please let us have the details by 20th November. There's no cost for this but donations are always gratefully received! We do seem to have our begging bowl out a lot just lately, what with requests for donations and pleas for attendance at quiz nights etc. Unfortunately our printer gave up the ghost recently, one effect of which was that some people received their News & Views quite late last month, so apologies to you for that. We have now invested in a new printer that's much quicker and can produce the colour we want, but it comes at a price. Hence our

renewed fund raising efforts and the inclusion of the donation envelope with this month's News & Views! We can also now provide a very costeffective colour printing service to other organisations/businesses, should you need leaflets/posters etc. Contact us for a quote! If you would like to make a donation please drop the envelope into one of the following: The Druid Inn Loggerheads Garage Pioneer Stores, Cadole or, of course, 2 Cae Gwyn Very many thanks to local organisations and individuals who have given generous donations to date. In hopeful anticipation Paul & Siobhan Tel: 810566 newsandviews@llanferres.org

Llanferres Over 60s On October 11th we had a very interesting, informative, and amusing talk about the "Duties of being a Toastmaster". Mr Brian Russell,(who some may remember from when he used to live in Tafarn-Gelyn and was one of the first members of the bowling club) told of his experiences at State Occasions with Royalty and M.P.s, present, Banquets, Receptions for famous people, Superstars etc. most of whom were pleasant and co-operative, but some who were not!! He nowadays mostly officiates at Weddings and told us of various mishaps and awkward moments- even "Catastrophes" he has had to cope with. He now avoids seven year old Page-boys!! and two year old Flower-girls!! and checks that the caterers have a stand-by Wedding cake!! Our next meeting is on Tuesday Nov 8th at 2.00 pm in the Village Hall when Mr Alan Roberts from Denbighshire County Council who will talk about "Refuse Collections and Re-cycling".Hopefully he can answer all our questions and tell us about future plans for the Rural areas of Denbighshire. Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday October 10th proved most popular when Ray Bailey gave an illustrated talk entitled "Bulbs with a Difference". With a list of 73 slide photographs to be shown, each member was able to note ideas for their own garden throughout the year. No daffodils on the list and only one miniature narcissus species proved the variation of bulbs available. This proved a most enlightening talk. Our one disappointment was that though some visitors at the show had expressed an interest in the club, when invited, via the article in the News and Views, no one came. Sad to say it was their loss! The next meeting, which is on Monday 14th November, will be the AGM followed by a quiz. Joan Almond Secretary

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE We have recently had a visit from a group of foreign journalists on a culinary tour of Wales. They came to our fish workshop and joined local people working with our Head Chef to make some delicious fish meals. We made a number of dishes all using fish that had been caught in North Wales. We used Menai mussels, trout from the Bodfari Trout Farm and this dish using sea bass from the Conwy Estuary. We used chard from Jane's garden which is a wonderful vegetable, pretty enough to be grown in a flower boarder, very easy to grow and hardy through most of what winter throws at it.

Pan Fried sea bass on a bed of puy lentils and chard Sea Bass fillets 250g puy lentils Pancetta 300ml water Small bunch herbs eg rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley Chard or spinach Olive oil Small knob butter Black pepper Squeeze lemon juice " " " " " " " "

Cook lentils in water with herbs for 25 - 30 minutes until lentils are soft Remove herbs and add chopped pancetta to lentils Finely chop chard or spinach Place in saucepan with a small knob of butter Oil and season fish Heat dry pan, add fish & cook While fish is cooking cook chard for 2 - 3 minutes until wilted Serve lentils, topped with chard and fish placed on top

Locally Grown Vegetable Boxes Would you like to receive a weekly box of locally grown seasonal vegetables? Plans are afoot to restore the walled garden at Colomendy Hall. With support from Kingswood who now run the Outdoor Education Centre, Cadwyn Clwyd and hopefully some other fund providers, it should soon be possible to buy local seasonal vegetables. To make this happen, a not for profit business is being set up which will employ a horticulturist to grow the vegetables. The plan is to grow enough to produce about 25 vegetable boxes per week, the sale of which will pay the gardener. To get started, we need to find 18 -20 families or businesses who would be interested in receiving a weekly veg box and being part of this project. The cost would be anything from ÂŁ7.50 - ÂŁ15 per family per week depending on the size of box you wish to receive. To kick start this project there will be an open meeting on Tuesday 15 November at 7.30pm in the meeting room at Loggerheads Country Park. If you are interested please come along to the meeting or get in touch for some more information: Jane Clough day 01352 810397; evening 01352 810802, mobile 07779 235292 or cloughbryncelyn@btinternet.com

Dr Christine’s letter I have been busy with county council and CHC visits this month. In the County council we had a report from the BCUHT and the reviews are due for Emergency acute surgery and Maternity for the whole of North Wales in the second week in November The CHC has been doing spot visits in the 3 DGH and 2 community hospitals I went to Dolgellau hospital. Lovely place with a grand birthing centre run by community midwives. They were all extremely efficient and courteous and pleased to see us in our checking mode. These visits are to check the patient environment for staff attitude, ambience, cleanliness, noise etc and restricted meal time. I also went to Glan Clwyd to the Gastro unit, ward 5 and A and E. The trolleys were not too clean, and the bell pull had been removed in the disabled toilet in A and E as someone had tried to commit suicide with it 2 weeks prior. None of the outside windows had been cleaned and since the sun was shining they looked filthy. Apparently they can't get the people to clean them It is only 4 storeys high. Otherwise a good report and again the staff were excellent except for one junior doctor who thought we were in the way!!

is where pushchairs etc have to be moved into the road, leave the Colomendy side available still to park on the verge. My radio programmes are on radio Wales about 'Cuts' these are about community emergency services, whistle blowing and violence in public spaces, especially the Health Service, and the effect of CCTV in reducing the violence and abuse which the front line staff experience especially in A and E. The bus drivers now have swab kits so if they are spat at the saliva can be sent for DNA testing and matched if the spitter has a previous record. On the home front the old schoolroom in Llanarmon is now opened and the youth club is in full swing on Wednesday 6.30 to 8pm for year 6 in Ysgol Bro Famau and youths to 17. We have pool, table tennis and other games. All in Llanferres welcome. There is a Christmas party December 14th

Nature Notes In my Nature Notes last month I lamented the absence of butterflies. No sooner had I sent my notes in, than we had an 'Indian Summer' and out came the butterflies to add late summer colour to the garden. Red admirals, small tortoiseshells, commas, peacocks and 'cabbage' whites competed with late bumblebees for nectar, on any garden plants still in flower. These butterflies had probably gone into hibernation but were awakened by the warm weather and enticed out to build up further body-fat to sustain them through the winter months. However, with the onset of the colder weather of this week, I expect they will have returned to their hibernacula and we are unlikely to see them again until next lateFebruary or March. Famous last words? There is no denying that autumn is with us and winter approaches. Trees are fast taking on their autumnal hues and extra colour is added to woods and hedgerows by fruits such as orange rowan berries, blue-black sloes, crimson hawthorns and scarlet rose hips. A blackbird or mistle thrush sometimes tries to take ownership of a tree or bush, laden with fruit, and chases away any other birds that try to cash in on the bounty. It sometimes succeeds for a time but fieldfares can quickly rob it of its food store by sheer weight of numbers. These Scandinavian thrushes are now with us along with their redwing cousins. They started arriving on the east coast about two weeks ago and have quickly spread westwards to most parts by now. I saw my first flock of redwings passing over on the 12th of the month. They

often migrate by night and can sometimes be heard passing overhead as they communicate with each other with a single call note. Although most of the redwings we see come from Scandinavia, a distinct (slightly larger and darker) subspecies breeds in Iceland and sometimes winters on our west coast. A Knopper gall from an oak tree was displayed on the BBC 'Autumn Watch' program. These galls are caused by a small wasp called Andricus quercuscalicis which have an interesting life cycle. Parthenogenic females(that is they can produce fertile eggs without mating) lay eggs in the male catkins of Turkey oak(Quercus cerris) in early spring to produce tiny galls. From these galls emerge male and female wasps which mate. The female then lays eggs in the female flowers of Pedunculate oak (Q. Robur). When the grubs hatch, the tree is induced to produce rich tissue on which the grubs feed. This tissue continues to grow and forms the large galls which can envelop the acorns. In the autumn the galls fall to the ground and over winter the grubs develop into the adult parthenogenic females which fly to Turkey oaks to restart the life cycle. This wasp only arrived in Britain in about 1950 from continental Europe and spread across the country. In 1979 I well remember it had a population explosion and most Pedunculate oaks were infected. Uninformed newspaper hacks of the time were predicting that there would be no acorns in future years and it would cause the demise of the oak tree in Britain. Guess what - it never happened.
