Llanferres Over 60's Club LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At the October meeting we had a talk by Rev. Ray Bailey about the time he spent at a church on the island of St Helena. I'm afraid my knowledge was very limited,- it is somewhere in the South Atlantic and Napoleon was sent there!! It was very interesting to hear about it's history and it's growing tourist industry which is attracted by special scenery and wild life. On Wed. 16th Oct. Betty organised an afternoon outing to Betws-yCoed but owing to the unkind weather it carried on to Trefriw Mill instead. Although it was wet it was clear and everyone enjoyed the Autumn scenery on the way. Llandudno was the last stop for tea, which was called "a Fish and Chip Supper" but the menu was quite varied. On Tues Nov. 12th we have another visit from Mark Baker who will talk about "Plas Teg, which is the big house on the Wrexham road near Pontblyddyn. There are many tales about it being haunted and it certainly has an interesting history. It has now been taken over by the National Trust. In the future it will be a place for us to visit. Visitors and friends are welcome to join us for any meeting Contact: Betty 01352 810 722

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Christmas Pudding for Stir up Sunday The official Stir up Sunday this year is 24 November, the last Sunday before advent but the idea of families coming together on a dark rainy day in November to start Christmas preparations is a great idea whichever day you choose. Christmas puddings are really easy to make and are great fun for children. It's really just a matter of getting the ingredients in, soaking the fruit the night before and starting early enough to get the long steam done. Makes a 2 pint pudding to serve 8 550g dried fruit : currents, raisins, sultanas, dates &/or figs 50 g chopped peel 1 large cooking apple peeled and finely chopped 250ml dark beer zest of 1 orange & 1 lemon 100g cold grated butter 100g dark brown sugar 100g white bread crumbs 50g self raising flour 50g almonds ½ tsp each of ginger, cinnamon, cloves & nutmeg ( or 1tsp mixed spice) 2 eggs Mix dried fruit, zests and beer in a bowl and leave to soak (preferably over night). Butter inside of pudding basin. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl, Add butter, eggs and fruit and stir well. Spoon into basin to about 2cm from top and press down. Cover with greaseproof paper and foil with a pleat to allow for expansions and secure with string. Steam in a pan of just boiling water, halfway up basin, for 5 hours. Check water regularly and top up. Recover with fresh paper and foil and store in cool place. Steam for 1 ½ hours to serve. www.caffiflorence.co.uk 01352 810397 info@caffiflorence.co.uk

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Show Report The October meeting of our Club had Ray Bailey as its guest speaker - his topic "Winter Gardening". His talk was not about digging, collecting leaves or cleaning greenhouses but about taking stock of the possible colour which can be found from October to March - classed by most gardeners as the winter period. The diversity of weather in this period can sometimes upset a gardener's plan but colour can be found not only in flowers but also foliage. With a wide range of photographs, mainly from his own garden, plant ideas were shown from the small hardy Cyclamen, Saxifrage, Snowdrop and Crocus to climbers such as Jasmine, Clematis and variegated Ivy, providing a patchwork of colour. There were tips about flowers in shady places and even plants which survive the snow, so it is not a season to miss out on colour in the garden. Our next meeting, on Monday 11th November, will be the Annual General Meeting followed by a member's buffet. Although next year should be the 40th Annual Show, David Jones our Show Secretary, has asked that the future viability of the show be discussed at the AGM. Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond ( 810808

Llanferres in the Great War Serjeant Walter Augustus Fernyhough 20004 6th (Service) Battalion Loyal North Lancs Walter was born "about 1890" in Mickle Trafford Cheshire, one of 15 children. His father was 53 at the time of Walter's birth. His mother was Mary. His birth was recorded in the July/August/September register. His father's profession is listed as farmer / milkman.
The Rector of Llanferres received an appreciation of his school work from a Mr Fitton at Preston "This was no sudden decision. Local News There have been a number of thefts from garages and garden sheds in the Llanarmon Area recently. Thieves appear to have been looking for bikes on this occasion but other items were also stolen.
Take Care
The police advise everyone to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity on 101. Where possible take the registration number of any vehicle and again report them immediately. The police also suggested that you should chain together items such as bikes, chainsaws and powered tools and padlock them to the walls of your out buildings. This will make it difficult for thieves to steal things easily. Do not forget to padlock your oil tanks and where possible install security lights. Christmas is coming and thieves are looking for those Christmas presents you store away at this time of year. Councillor Martyn Holland

Local News Llanferres / Colomendy Art Group. We held a most successful exhibition in the Loggerheads Country Park, again with the kind permission of Mr Howard Sutcliffe, Officer of the AONB. This year we were pleased to have Carolyn Thomas, Chairman of AONB to open our event. Over 320 people visited the exhibition and as usual we are indebted to so many of our friends and neighbours from Llanferres and nearby who have for many years loyally supported us. Voting for the favourite painting was very close, with 4 clear contenders. Janet Jones’ ‘Country Garden’ and Pat Armstrong’s ‘Cormorant’ Calligraphy were equal 1st, closely followed by Joan Almond’s painting ‘Summer’ and Jane Clarke’s ‘Looking after my Brother’. Janet and Pat have chosen Diabetes Research as this year’s Charity. They will receive £230 (the proceeds of the stall, raffle, name the teddy and a percentage of the painting sales). To date the group of only 10 have donated over £1,750 to various charities. Thank you again for your support, we really appreciate it.

Local News Another successful Vale of Clwyd Classic event Local resident Guy Woodcock and his organising team from Clwyd Vale Motor Club put on the third running of the ‘Classic’ on Saturday the 7th of September and created a route that would tax the skill of the very best of the 68 competitors. The route instructions were given to the competitors shortly before the start and the navigator had to plot the 130 mile route on to 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey maps. Then, by using their skill and expertise, direct the driver around whilst maintaining the exact average speed and staying on the correct roads. These sections are called Regularities and form the backbone of the event. By keeping up with the scheduled average and visiting all the secret controls on the route, the crews strive to get the minimum of penalty points. They are also required to attempt a number of special tests interspersed in the route on private land where the driver has a chance to stretch the legs of his pride & joy. Friday evening saw the cars being checked at Loggerheads Garage before the crews made their way for documentation at the Druid Inn. The cars have to be tested for noise and also to make sure that they conform to the type rules laid down by the regulatory authorities. In a nutshell they fall into three basic year bands; Category 1 for cars registered prior to 31st December 1967, Category 2 up to 31/12/1974 and Category 3 up to 31/12/1981. The entrants are further divided by the ability of the crews and the results and successes they have achieved; i.e. Masters, Experts & Novices. This therefore created 9 classes with possible awards for the first two crews in each class. Starting from the Druid Inn on Saturday morning saw the cars and crews in the Vale of Clwyd Classic set off at minute intervals to attempt the first short test round Loggerheads car park. They then wound their way south and westward over Moel Famau towards Ruthin for the second test at the cattle market. Continuing south towards Bryn SM for another test then the route turned northwards towards Denbigh over challenging Regularity sections and then more tests around Kinmel Hall and Bodelwyddan. Interspersed in these tests was a well-earned lunch halt in Cefn Meiriadog Village Hall where the residents had provided a wonderful home prepared buffet. Suitably nourished the competitors

Local News then tackled a very demanding afternoon route east of St. Asaph with perplexing Regularities before finally finishing back at the Druid for a superb meal provided by Jim & Julie and where the results team ploughed through the dozens of time cards and marshals check sheets to produce worthy overall victors and class winners.

A note from your County Councillor The Welsh Government have finally announced the funding figures for Local Government in Wales for the coming year and it comes as no surprise that the funding County Councils receive has been cut again. Sadly it appears that the best performing councils such as Denbighshire have been hit the hardest, with Denbighshire's funding being cut by between 4.6% and 5.00%. This is while some councils in South Wales are only looking at a reduction of just over 1% in their funding.
Forewarned is forearmed. The Counties officers who deal with dog fouling will be in our area over the next few weeks and if you do not want a hefty fine please clean up after your canine friends. Dog fouling is one of the top issues as far as the residents of Denbighshire are concerned and so please help us to ensure that everyone can enjoy the countryside and our paths by acting responsibly when walking your dogs.
Last year I let people know about the Welsh Governments scheme for council tax rebates for all residents in receipt of state pensions. I am pleased to say that there was a high take up of the rebates in our ward with most of you getting just over ÂŁ40 back. Nature Notes There is no denying that autumn is here with the cooler days and often misty mornings. Gulls have come down from their moorland nesting sites to take up winter quarters on agricultural fields, Redwings are widespread in our area feeding on the abundant supply of Rowan berries and I have had reports of large flocks of Fieldfares, although I have not yet seen them myself in our locality but perhaps I have not been in the right place at the right time. There is a bumper crop of most wild fruit and berries but Sloes and wild Damsons are the exceptions which is strange, as domestic Plums seem to have done well. The large amount of Beech 'mast' this year is proving very popular with Wood pigeons, that are feeding on the fallen nuts. Incidentally, in some garden surveys, Wood pigeons are listed as the second most common bird, only surpassed by the Blackbird. People have been telling me what a great year it has been for butterflies, but has it? Certainly there has been a preponderance of some species (Small tortoiseshell, Comma, Peacock and Whites) in the garden during September and early October but the same cannot be said for the open countryside, where the wild flowers have just about finished and, therefore, there has been little pollen or nectar for the butterflies. The result is that they have been driven into gardens to find sustenance, which just emphasises how important our gardens can be for wildlife. This year's spring was the coldest since 1891 so the butterflies that usually emerge at that time did not do well
but I believe the summer species fared rather better. But summer has not yet left us. Even in mid-October, on a sunny day, there are still butterflies in the garden but what I find more intriguing is the number of bumblebees that are still visiting the flowers. Most of them are new queens and by now I would have expected them to have gone into hibernation. Some species can hibernate from late June but for most it is August or September. I suspect, with the late spring, they began their colonies later than usual and the whole life cycle is therefore behind schedule. Still, those that I have seen appear to be quite fat, so that bodes well for their ability to withstand the winter. Among them I noted the Tree bumblebee that I wrote about last month, so it is obviously widespread in the district. On a sunny day, just before writing this, I watched about a dozen pairs of Common darter dragonflies (Sympetrum striolatum) egg laying round the margin of a shallow pond. The male grips the female, behind the eyes, with his tail-end claspers and they fly in tandem and she deposits her eggs by dipping the tip of her abdomen into the water. While doing this the pair is often pestered by another male trying to 'get in on the act'. Also, at this pond, were several males of the large Southern hawker(Aeshna cyanea) flying rapidly about the pond looking for insect prey while the female of the species was depositing her eggs in the moss or mud at the water's edge.
