Llanferres Over 60s At our September meeting we had a visit from Miss Mary Carryll who was the maidservant of Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby: two ladies who in their twenties fled from Ireland to escape the strict codes of conduct expected by the families of the Gentry at the turn of the 18th century. Their story was told by Miss Williams from Ruthin who came dressed in costume of the time. We all thoroughly enjoyed her lively and amusing presentation delivered in a strong Irish brogue and we are arranging a visit soon to Plas Newydd in LLangollen where the "Ladies of Llangollen" settled and lived happily into their eighties!! The next meeting is on October 11th as usual in the Village hall at 2.00pm The talk will be by Mr. Brian Russell on "Being a Toastmaster". Among many others he has been officiating at functions with Tony Blair, Jasper Carrot, and Freddie Starr so it promises to be an interesting afternoon. Olive 810 294 Awarded

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The Exhibitors at Llanferres Gardening Club`s Annual Show were once again complimented by the judges on the high standard of their entries, (a total of 620) An increase of 10% compared with last year. Entrants in the Junior classes are to be particularly congratulated both on the quantity and quality of their entries. Visitors were met with outstanding displays of Floral Art, Flowers, and Fruit and Vegetables. The Handicraft, Art, Photography, Home Produce, and Junior craft classes were keenly contested . The trophies were presented by Mrs Charmian Spencer of Pentre Cerrig Mawr. Visitors enjoyed the woodcarving demonstration by Alun Williams, who had also carved the new trophy awarded for the best picture in the Adult Art Classes. Thank you to the donor who wishes to remain anonymous. The vintage Hornby Dublo Railway layout created considerable interest as did the displays by Denbighshire Countryside Services, Caffi Florence of Loggerheads Country park and the Aberduna Quarry Learning Centre where younger visitors were given the opportunity to make their own models of fossils. The Show is an excellent opportunity to catch up on local news so that the refreshment area organised by Mary Barton and her helpers was very busy. Special thanks are due to Betty Cook who made all the very enjoyable cakes and scones. St Berres`Church and the R.N.L.I. stalls were well supported and the proceeds of the auction of produce ( £60 ) will support the Llanferres Senior Citizens Welfare Committee. The organisers wish to thank the exhibitors (without whom there would be no Show!) for all their efforts. Our thanks also to the Judges for their support and to everyone who contributed to the Plant Stall, the Raffle prizes, the Bottle stall and who helped with the setting up of the Show, the organisation on the day, and to the visitors who attended. ……………………………………………… For next month`s Meeting of the Gardening Club we are extending a special invitation to all the exhibitors and visitors to the Show and anyone else interested to join members for an Open Evening, Free of Charge, when Mr Ray Bailey will talk on " Bulbs with a difference". Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Vegetable Casserole with Herb Dumplings As the nights draw in and the temperatures fall we inevitably start to fancy more wintery food. This is a great recipe because it is warm and comforting without being too heavy. It is good served with some green leafy vegetable such as kale or savoy cabbage. Serves 4 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion chopped 2 sticks of celery 3 carrots diced ½ swede or sweet potato 2 leeks tin chick peas tin of tomatoes 300ml vegetable stock or water Dumplings 125g self raising flour 25g butter or vegetable suet 50 g grated cheese ½ tsp mustard powder 4tbsp milk herbs seasoning Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large saucepan. Add the chopped vegetables and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add chick peas, tomatoes and stock and bring to the boil. Continue to simmer on hob or place in casserole dish with a lid and cook for 25 minutes. While cooking make dumplings : If using suet mix all dry ingredients and add milk to form soft dough. If using butter, rub butter into flour and when the texture is like breadcrumbs add remaining dry ingredients and milk. Roll dumplings into small balls and add to casserole. Cook for a further 20 – 25mins until vegetables are soft and dumplings are light.

LLANFERRES MINIBUS At last things seemed to be moving with some groups showing interest and four people volunteering to drive the 'bus. I was going ahead to arrange a training session but on reading the application forms for prospective users I came to the following clause. "............ "I confirm that should any damage be done to the vehicle or it is involved in a road traffic collision, our organisation has the means to pay for such damage ,or should there be a valid insurance claim,we would be able to pay the excess of ÂŁ500...... As we would be paying charges to cover insurance costs as well as fuel and maintenance,I think this makes it beyond the means of our Village groups. I will not go any further for now but would be glad to know what other people think. It's a pity but I tried and at least we know what has happened to our 'bus. Triquizard Update A fun night was had on the first Triquizard evening. 11 teams competed in a very tightly contested quiz. The winners on the night had to be decided by a sudden death tie-breaker! The “Where’s Watson” team just pipped The Headstrongs to first place after they had both tied on an excellent 81 points. Current champions the Ever Hopefuls took third place.
Team Awesome (above) and PollyWollyDoodles (below, that’s Tim behind Jed!) “Where’s Watson” also took the special picture shared the Dingbats prize, both scoring 19 round prize. (Sorry we didn’t get a photograph of out of 20!
the team!) There’s a few more pictures on the website, and scores round by round if you really want to see them!. Don’t miss the next quiz on Wednesday 19th October - it’s not too late to join in. Thank you to everyone who took part for your support. We raised £167 on the night towards News & Views costs. Paul & Siobhan. www.llanferres.org

Outstanding success for the inaugural Vale of Clwyd Classic
The format of this increasingly popular and PR friendly type of motor sport is rather complex and head scratching for the competing crews. Local businessman Guy Woodcock and his experienced organising team from Clwyd Vale Motor Club had created a route that would tax the skill of the very best of the competitors. The route instructions are given to them shortly before the start and the navigator has to plot the 130 mile route on to 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey maps. Then, by using their skill and expertise, direct the driver around whilst maintaining the exact average speed and staying on the correct roads. These sections are called Regularities and form the backbone of the event. By keeping up with the scheduled average and visiting all the secret controls on the route, the crews strive to get the minimum of penalty points. They are also required to attempt a number of special tests interspersed in the route on private land where the driver has a chance to stretch the legs of his pride & joy. Friday evening saw the cars being checked at Loggerheads Garage before
the crews made their way for documentation at the Druid Inn. The cars have to be tested for excessive noise and also to make sure that they conform to the type rules laid down by the regulatory authorities. In a nutshell they fall into three basic year bands; Category 1 for cars registered prior to 31st December 1967, Category 2 prior to 31/12/1974 and Category 3 prior to 31/12/1981. The entrants are further divided by the ability of the crews and the results and successes they have achieved; i.e. Masters, Experts & Novices. This therefore created 9
classes with possible awards for the first three crews in each class. Starting from the Druid Inn on Saturday 3rd September the 52 cars and crews in the Vale of Clwyd Classic set off at minute intervals and wound their way eastwards through the local lanes towards Nercwys.

Vale of Clwyd Classic Moving north and west they then tackled tests in Gwysaney Hall, Lygan Uchaf and Penbedw outside Nannerch. Morning coffee halt at the Pwll Gwyn in Afonwen was a pleasant respite for cars and crews. Then off towards St Asaph to undertake further regularity sections and tests before heading south toward
through the dozens of time cards and marshals check sheets to produce a worthy overall victor and class winners. The organising team would like to thank the hundreds of volunteer marshals and officials who steadfastly manned all the controls and also the courtesy of the ‘locals’ who came out to watch these

Thanks for your help. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL MARSHALS Just a note to say a MASSIVE thank you to ALL of you that turned out on both Saturday night and Sunday to help out. Despite the changing weather, over 70 volunteers helped out all over the Clwydian Hills to ensure the CRC Mountain Bike Marathon could take place. This raised £2000 towards the maintenance costs and future replacement of park equipment for the LPFRA. A big thank you to Jim and Julie, at The Druid, for the “after event social” and Gillyfor the BBQ. Dan Hurst On behalf of LPFRA

Local News Welsh apple expert on hand for Flintshire gardeners A Welsh apple expert will be giving growing tips and advice to green-fingered fruit growers in Flintshire. A special Welsh Apple Day workshop will be held at an organic orchard in Northop on Saturday 8th October. The workshop will be hosted by FlintShare, a community-run group that grows fruit and veg for local people. Apple growing specialist Ian Sturrock will be on hand to talk about the best local Welsh varieties and give growing tips and advice. He will also be bringing a traditional apple-press, which will be used to make fresh apple juice from the many varieties of apple growing at the site. Ian is renowned for discovering the Bardsey Island Apple, a rare and historic apple tree which can withstand the harsh conditions on the small island of Bardsey off the North Wales coast. The workshop is suitable for anyone with an interest in how to grow apple trees. It will include pruning tips, harvesting techniques, apple pressing and information about traditional Welsh apple varieties. People are also invited to bring their own apples for pressing or to identify pest and disease problems. The event lasts from 10am to 4pm and costs ÂŁ10, or is free for FlintShare members. Dr Christine’s letter Autumn seems to have arrived no Indian summer this year. I am sorry I missed your annual gardening show yet again. I managed to be in Africa teaching for last 3 years. This time I was at the 45th anniversary of my graduation from Edinburgh. Very good meeting, we have all now retired and so met jovially, less competitively and all carrying on with the rest of our lives. Some of the year have done very good works eg Medicine Sans Frontiers, rearranging the front line army emergency services at battle zones. Soldiers at the front line now get treated where they lie by brave emergency paramedics, under fire, and survive to get back to Birmingham within 48 hours. A complete change from 10 years ago. One of the year has become a member of the Scottish Parliament. My efforts in North Wales and Sub-Saharan Africa appear pretty paltry in comparison.

Nature Notes Where have all our most colourful butterflies gone this year? Usually in August and September buddleia bushes, and later Sedum spectabile plants, host large numbers of 'Nymphalid' butterflies which include the well known Small tortoiseshell, Red admiral, Peacock, Comma and Painted lady. Yet this year they have been conspicuous by their absence with only very small numbers being seen. The weather for the last few weeks has not been very benevolent towards butterflies but one would have thought that if they were about they would have emerged on the few sunny days that have occurred but this does not seem to have been the case. Incidentally, it is a feature of butterflies of this group that they only seem to have four legs, which defies the categorisation of insects as having six legs. They do, in fact, have six but, as an evolutionary adaptation, the two front legs have reduced into stumps so that only the remaining four are used for walking. These stumps are often covered in dense tufts of scales giving the group of butterflies the alternative name of brush-foots. Although butterflies are mostly absent from the Sedums, new queen bumblebees are taking advantage of the rich source of nectar to build up fat reserves to sustain them through the coming winter hibernation. I counted over a dozen on one plant, composed of five species. Readers may remember that in my June "Nature Notes" I commented on the large number of bumblebees feeding on my cotoneaster bush. This was the species Cotoneaster
horizontalis which grows against our fence and was colonised by many bumblebees and hoverflies. However, I noticed another species of Cotoneaster, which grows as a bush, which was hosting wasps. There were 20 to 30 wasps on it at one time but not a single bee or hoverfly and I could not but wonder why wasps preferred one and bumblebees the other. Flowering at present are the lightblue, delicate looking Harebells(Campanula rotundifolia) known in Scotland as Bluebells - what we, south of the border, call Bluebells the Scots call Wild hyacinths. But why are they called 'Harebells'? They have very thin flower stems so 'Hairbells' would seem to be more appropriate. I have done some research and the best explanations I can find are 'they grow in places frequented by hares' or 'it was a literal translation from 'Hasenglรถckchen' the German name for bluebells'. Neither seems satisfactory. Has anybody got a better explanation? The first of the migrant songbirds to arrive, in March, is the diminutive Chiffchaff heralding its presence with its repetitive, onomatopoeic song. In autumn they often burst into song again just prior to leaving for their Mediterranean winter haunts and this explains why I have seen and heard them at several sites recently, including our own garden. I could not but wish them 'bon voyage' and look forward to their return next year to mark the beginning of another spring.
