Local news Llanferres Village Hall We have unique arrangements with the County Council for the upkeep of our village hall and we all enjoyed a great Celebration for the 50th Anniversary in 2008. The hall is run by a committee made up of a) A representative from each of the organisations in the village and b) Others taken from volunteers (over 18) present at the A.G.M. Having attended meetings of the committee and the A.G.M. I feel there is a growing lack of interest as so few people turn up. Can I appeal for more to come and help The Hall doesn't run itself!!! The Committee have 4 meetings a year with the A.G.M. in November. We can now boast excellent heating so we can maybe encourage more people to use it. "Thank you for listening!!" Olive Parry NB. There is a committee meeting on Monday 6th September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall Awarded

Marshals needed Sunday 19th September 2010 The ‘Merida’ bike marathon has changed name to the Chain Reaction Cycles MTB marathon. The event starts at 9.30am at Ruthin Rugby Club. There will be approximately 1000 riders from all over the U.K., including professional riders and Olympic Cyclists. The Llanferres Playing Field Association has again agreed to marshal the event, with the help of our local community. In 2009 we raised over £2000 for the playing field. As in previous years, there will be a marshals meeting on Friday 17th at 7.30pm, and post event BBQ / free drink at The Druid. If you have marshaled before, wish to help out, or if you have any questions please email me, or add your name on the sheet in the Druid.

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club As usual, our meeting in August made the final arrangements for our Show which will be in the Village hall on September 4th. Once again our Show Secretary, David Jones, was well prepared, having streamlined many parts last year. Times were agreed to open the hall on Friday and Saturday, stewards appointed, and other task volunteers were agreed. Once again we welcome new exhibitors. Garden exhibits are limited to Club members and local residents but all other sections - floral art, photographic, home section, handicraft and art classes, together with junior sections for handicraft, photo and art entries - are open to all. So you may not think you have the best rhubarb or cucumber but you will not know unless you enter them. Perhaps your garden flowers may look past their best but so will everyone else's and you may have 4 tomatoes or a good rose so you could still win. Or you can always make scones or a pie, take a photo or make a craft item, so why not take another look at our show schedule and get your entry form in by 6pm on Wednesday September 1st and bring your entry to the Village Hall on Saturday September 4th, 8am to 10.30 am. No charge to enter and you may win a coveted First Prize Card or even a Cup or a Shield to display at home for a year to impress your friends. DO IT! YOUR LOCAL GARDEN SHOW NEEDS YOU! May we thank Jim and Julie from the Druid. Number seven won the Bonus Ball and the Garden Club were that week's nominated local organisation, so we received a much appreciated ÂŁ40. Nikki Giles, the Flintshire coordinator for CSA, has been out and about gauging reactions to the idea. Motives for getting involved in a Community Supported Agriculture model include food security, helping raise your own food and mixing with like-minded people. In other words it's good for the planet, good for you and great fun! There is lots of enthusiasm for the project and we're ready for the next step - the Big Public Meeting.

Nature Notes What sort of a year are we having for butterflies? My own impression, judging from the butterflies (or lack of them) in the garden, is that we are having a poor year and this seems to be what local residents I have spoken to think. But is it as bad as we fear? In the open countryside I find the situation somewhat better. Although, for personal reasons, I have not been able to do much butterfly monitoring this year, when I have been able to get out I have been reasonably pleased with the results.

I recently visited two reserves in Oxfordshire and I was amazed at the number of Common blues that I saw. There were literally hundreds - too many to count - and were a delight to see. There were also very many Gatekeepers, Meadow browns, Ringlets, Brown argus and Marbled whites as well as other species. The climate is warmer there than in North Wales so, I suppose, it is to be expected that butterflies will do better there but the contrast was dramatic. The Common blues represented a second brood, which we do not In June there were good counts of usually get here, and I could not Common blues and Dingy skippers find any of them locally this month. but Orange tips seemed scarcer than usual. When typing the name of a website into your browser, most web sites won't need you to put the http:// or the www. in front of the website name. For example, typing amazon.co.uk is enough. If you want to zoom into something on a page, hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard, and move your mouse wheel forward, and then obviously back to zoom out. Or hold down the CTRL key and press the + key at the same time (- key to zoom out). This applies to most programs you are using on your PC too. When browsing a page, if you see a link to another site, hold down your CTRL key before clicking on the link. That way a new window will open and you won't have lost your place on the first site.
