Community Council News - July Meeting There being no formal meeting of the Council in August, the last meeting was on July 14th and the next meeting will be on September 8th 2011. Points of Interest from July:The public consultation period regarding the proposed parking restrictions on the A494 at Loggerheads has now closed. Some objections have been lodged. The Council still requires further details before the request by MADRA for assistance with the maintenance of the village green in Maeshafn may be considered.
The Review of the Council`s assets has been completed. Details will be discussed at the next meeting. Correspondence:- DCC invitation to a Cluster Meeting at County Hall on July 26th. At this meeting the Draft Charter which aims " to define and enhance the existing relationship between Denbighshire`s Town and Community councils and the County Council" will be introduced. Councillors will discuss the document at the next Community Council meeting. Cllrs David Jones, John Almond and Rob Armstrong will attend the Cluster meeting.

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club As usual, our meeting in August made the final arrangements for our Annual Show which will be held in the Village Hall on September 3rd. Our Show Secretary, David Jones, was well organised with all time-table details confirmed. Times for members to set up tables on Friday evening, stewards appointed and all other tasks were agreed. Once again we welcome new exhibitors. Gardening classes are restricted to club members and local residents but all other sections are open to everyone. Remember, that item of craft, be it woodwork, art or knitwear could be a winner; your jam, cake or pickle could impress the judges or what about your photographs? Or how are you at flower arranging? So why not have another look at our Show Schedule. Schedules and Entry Forms can be obtained from any of the people listed below or can be downloaded from www.llanferres.org. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Apple, pear and beetroot chutney As word has got around that we are looking for locally grown produce, the amount arriving at our kitchen door has increased hugely. So, once the apples start arriving it’s chutney time. The beetroot in this recipe gives it a wonderful colour and earthy taste to off set the sweetness of the fruit. Ingredients
1kg fresh beetroot 500g cooking apples, peeled, cored and diced 500g conference pears, peeled, cored and diced 1 large onions, finely chopped 1 cloves garlic, crushed 1 pint white wine vinegar 1 tbsp ground mixed spice 1 tsp sea salt 500g dark brown sugar Method
Place all ingredients in a large pan and bring to boil, stirring. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 ½ - 2 hours, stirring occasionally until chutney is thick. Pour into prepared jars while still hot. Seal with air tight, vinegar proof covers. New Museum in Liverpool houses local exhibit Do you recognise the totem pole in the picture? It was, until quite recently (2007), in the Kingswood Colomendy Centre at Loggerheads. But it is currently on loan for three years to the new Museum of Liverpool, which opened on 19th July. Originally made in the ‘60's by pupils from Sefton Park Secondary School, the pole has been carefully restored to its original colours by the Museum, and is now displayed on the top floor of their stunning new premises at Pier Head in the city. Maeshafn CC news What a fantastic season this has been for weather. We have not had a weekend game cancelled (yet) this year and most rain seems to have affected our practice and friendly nights in the midweek.
3 games left, including a probable mauling by Menai Bridge, but also Llangollen and Pwllheli. We hope to play a friendly at the end of the season and then start winter nets after Christmas. We are also touring in Stratford upon Avon over the August We are currently 5th in a league of 17 bank holiday and have a barge hired that includes teams such as Buckley, for one day, which should be Llangollen, Mochdre and Menai entertaining. Bridge, so this has been a good year for us. Tom Hall, the saviour, currently holds the highest score by a Maeshafn player Maeshafn have won plenty of games - hitting 150 not out against Corwen. this year. TRIQUIZARD TOURNAMENT A series of 3 quizzes at the Druid Inn After a successful first year we’re running the quizzes for another series this autumn. There are prizes for each quiz and an overall tournament prize too, as well as the accolade of Triquizard Champions of course! currently held by the Ever Hopefuls. VALE OF CLWYD CLASSIC 3RD SEPTEMBER 2011 The Druid Inn, Llanferres, will become the focal point for the forthcoming Vale of Clwyd Classic Historic Tour on Saturday the 3rd September. This inaugural event is the brainchild of local man Guy Woodcock and he will be ably assisted by experienced officials from Clwyd Vale Motor Club. The daylight Historic Tour is primarily aimed at the older, classic cars that we all remember from our youth and the likes of a 1955 Austin Westminster, 1966 Hillman Imp and a 1959 Triumph TR3A, will be touring round the local lanes trying to maintain a low average speed whilst keeping on the correct route. During the day the cars will also be attempting special tests on private land where the drivers will be let off the leash and can stretch the legs of their pride and joy! Dr Christine’s letter - Summer 2011 I am having a really enjoyable summer. The reduction in council work is very beneficial for my wellbeing as I find the meetings in the main very tedious. For some reason however the Community Health Council [CHC] does not seem to take a holiday so I have been inspecting hospitals and GP practices in Oswestry [which has 40% Welsh patients] and Denbigh, this I enjoy. I have also been making radio programmes for Radio Wales called 'Irritated by Cuts' to be aired in October. The events of the rioting in England have rather pre-empted the discussion I had with a Connah's Quay councillor about the effects of the cuts on the front line visible police officers who have been axed from there and they now have a rapid response team for the 3 counties, which due to distance is less than rapid. I was in Belfast for the British Transplant Games the weekend of the riots. Belfast was peaceful but they had had their annual riots at the end of June/early July in the marching season. I notice Wales was quiet but I did hear that they failed to get a riot together in Newport!!! Back to the British Transplant Games [34th] which were wonderful. These are Games for those who have had life threatening heart/lung/liver disease or renal failure, aged 3 to 79 years. They have a 25 metre dash for the under 5s who run like mad from one of their parents into the arms of the other at the finishing line, either that or they turn back and start crying as they are overwhelmed by the
occasion and the cheering of hundreds of spectators. I defy anyone not to have a tear in their eye. There are loads of sporting events for all ages and abilities over 4 days culminating in a Gala dinner, which is a celebration of life. The donor families are much in evidence as this event, which thanks the donors and promotes organ donation. These are not just the donor families of people who have died but also the live donors, many now who are unrelated, they donate for altruistic reasons. The photo is me awarding the gold medal to the winner of the 100 metres, adult male, at least the medal is around his babe's neck so proud he was to have been able to become a father. Also I had 3 days at the Eisteddfod in Wrexham, the first to talk to the Children's Commissioner about vulnerable children, the 2nd to sing in Cor Dewi Sant, our village choir, we came 3rd out of 10 in the welsh learners choir singing Finlandia.. We were delighted, the judge said we need to learn the welsh words but I fear we are a bit old for that. The 3rd day was to man the CHC stand.. Wonderful atmosphere on the Maes. The Youth club starts again 7th September now in the newly renovated 'Old Schoolroom' by St Garmon's church. All 11 plus year olds are welcome. Broadband Not Spots or Slow Spots - How Is It For You? Do you remember 15th February and 14th July 2004? On 15th February the 810 Broadband 4 Llanferres campaign successfully achieved 186 Registrations when we needed 100 to Trigger Broadband in Llanferres. 14th July was our Broadband Start Date. So 7 years later how good is your reception? I have just discovered I live in a 'Slow-Spot' as I receive a broadband signal of less than 2 megabytes per second (Mbps). I have such low broadband speeds that I struggle to use popular internets sites such as the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player or YouTube' Downloading attachments from emails or web sites takes ages or just fails. Mary has suffered recently trying to catch up on gardening shows, as the screen freezes or jumps along slowly trying to catch up with the expert's dialogue. Athletics events, especially 100m sprints, often end up with watching them get on their marks and next watching the winner celebrating after the race!!!!!!!! The Welsh Government launched the Broadband Support Scheme (BSS) last summer. It offers help in areas where broadband connection speeds remain low because they are too remote from telephone exchanges. A 'Not-Spot' is defined as below 512 kilobytes per second. Anyone below this level, where connectivity is unable to sustain the most basic broadband, can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 to replace their dial-up connection with the most appropriate technology available. By the end of May this year BSS had approved £600,000 worth of grants from the original pot of £2 million. Wales' Technology Minister Edwina Hart has just announced that the BSS will be extended to include areas where connectivity is less than 2Mbps - Slow-Spots'. She said: 'Since the scheme was launched last July, over 800 households, businesses and third sector organisations have had applications approved and now have broadband access. By extending the criteria for the BSS we can make sure that more people can access broadband and take advantage of the opportunities provided by digital technologies.' I had already looked up the BSS grants and was disappointed when I found the limit was 512Kbps. I had been tested at 530 Kbps or 0.53
Mbps. Then I heard the Eye on Wales programme on Radio Wales about successful schemes around Wales and the extension of BSS. The programme featured the community of Treleddyd Fawr on the St David's peninsula in Pembrokeshire. In January of this year it became the first community scheme to successfully apply to the BSS. 20 individual applicants pooled their grants to receive £20,000 of funding and buy in a wireless solution from a communications company. The scheme delivers download speeds up to 10 megabits per second for a monthly payment of £20 and could serve as a blueprint for the rest of rural Wales. The company owner said 'Eighty per cent of the people here are running small rural businesses and it's very frustrating if you haven't got broadband. They were getting miniscule connections, dial-up speeds. We've brought them in connections far in excess of anything they can get this side of Swansea. This is the role model for everywhere. It's been so easy to do. It's been a simple exercise and very fruitful for everyone concerned. Denbighshire County Council is also trying to locate the communities, mainly in rural locations in south Denbighshire, which cannot access broadband. While Denbighshire is not able to directly provide broadband for residential use because of restrictions around State Aid, it has a lead role in enabling communities to access better broadband services and promoting local economic development that often requires access to internet services. The first thing we need to do is find out how many Llanferres households are in Broadband Not or Slow Spots. If your broadband speeds seem low.
