Local news In light of the Armed Forces Day on June the 26th it may be appropriate to congratulate a local member of the Armed Forces. As many of the village are aware, we have our own serving member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, recently returned from duty in Afghanistan. Richard Hughes, of Tyn Llan, has served in both Iraq and twice in Afghanistan. Since returning home, Richard, as a member of the First Battalion, marched through Chester to receive the Freedom of the Borough and recently, watched by his proud parents, Phil and Margaret and Sister

Have your say The Community Council are considering the possibility of improving the area surrounding our Memorial Stone. It is felt that such a development would provide a more accessible and appropriate area for the Memorial services.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to be considered, including changes or additions to the current situation, or aspects which you feel should remain the same then please contact me via: jac.armstrong@spc.oxon.org or telephone on 01352 810259.

As I am currently pursuing possible funding opportunities, Many thanks, through War Memorial grants, I Cllr Jac Armstrong. would like to invite the views of other residents regarding this proposal.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE We have recently held a Food from the Wild workshop and this was one of our most popular recipes. It is a very refreshing drink that is perfect for a lazy summer evening. Our lanes and hedgerows have a lot of Elder and early July is peak flowering time. This recipe only needs 4 flower heads so there will be plenty left for my bees and other insects. Do pick away from main roads and you will get better fermentation if you collect flowers on a dry sunny day.

Elderflower Fizz Makes about 6x 75cl bottles 4 elderflower heads 1 lemon 650g granulated sugar 2 tbs white wine vinegar 4.5 litres water Dissolve sugar in 1 litre of warm water and add remaining water. Squeeze lemon into sugared water and roughly chop rind and add to mix with vinegar and flower heads. Cover and leave to steep for 4 days. Strain and bottle. It should be ready in 6 - 10 days. Check after 6 days to ensure it is not too fizzy. Serve with ice and a slice of lemon.

Please ask churchwardens for details of any 'together at 6' services on the fourth Sundays. Looking forward There will be two different services to attend this month: we shall be having a Songs of Praise Family worship on Sunday 11th July and we invite you to choose your favourite hymn. Just give your title or first line to the churchwardens. We shall also be thinking about Saint Berres after whom our church and village are named - come along to learn more! There will be tea and coffee after the service. On 25th July you will have an opportunity to meet Bishop Gregory who has been in his post over a year now. His Visitation, as it is termed, to the Deanery, which includes the five churches in our Bro Famau grouping, as well as many others, will take place at St Mary's, Mold at 11 am on that Sunday. Bishop Gregory will be the preacher. Again, coffee, tea and biscuits will be served after the service. Services in August These will follow the normal pattern of 9.30 am Holy Communion with Family Service on the second Sunday at 11 am. The fifth Sunday, 29th August, will be a 10.30 am Group Holy Communion at St John the Evangelist, Rhydymwyn. A big thank you So many of you, and also Mold Rotary, supported our Fun in the Garden in so many ways and again the weather was perfect, enabling us to set up gazebos on the Friday afternoon. Thanks to you all, we raised a magnificent sum of around ÂŁ1100 (some of which was specifically donated to the NCF) to be shared between the church and the Northern Cleft Foundation. The surgeon who came to talk to us at the event indicated that each operation costs in the region of ÂŁ200 so the church

Church News has decided to add a small sum to the Foundation's share of the £1100 raised to give an amount payable to the Foundation of £600. Furthermore, Wendy has received a donation to the Foundation of £100 from a local choir who knew about the Foundation from the fundraising efforts, including Wendy's pancake party, in Llanferres. And thank you to News & Views for featuring the event on the front of the magazine! Regrettably we won't be doing the same event again but no doubt other ideas will take its place.

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our visit to Philip Hunt's garden on Monday June 14th proved to be a great surprise and so different to 'National Garden Scheme' gardens we have visited over the last eight years. Mature trees and shrubs planted over the last 30 years of such an eclectic variety, one wonders at the diversity growing in the one garden. Mr Hunt showed us round the garden - his knowledge wide-ranged - of an area the size of three house gardens, each arranged as a separate entity. In a unique 'cruck house' garden shed complete with sedum roof, we enjoyed refreshments chatting with a most knowledgeable horticulturalist. Our thanks to Mr Hunt for making us most welcome. Our next meeting will be on Monday July 12th at the Village Hall when Mrs C Riden's talk will be entitled "The Saffron Crocus". Our August meeting on Monday 9th will be to make final arrangements for our Annual Show on Saturday September 4th in the Village Hall. Dr Christine's July letter I get the feeling this lovely June weather will turn into summer showers, any minute like last year, even though the plant watering is required I love the warmth. I went to a very pleasant lunch and afternoon party at 19 Cae Gwyn, lovely garden. Also I have taken the youth club camping, we have some Llanferres youths in our group when we camped at Gelli Gynan. Thanks to the Scouts who provided the equipment and the leaders. For some the weather was hot, the games exhausting and the walk too long but the getting of a bouncy castle allowed for shade and relaxing, doing nothing. The girls found the portable loos a bit of a turn off . All in all much enjoyed and there were 5 dogs, who had the best of times. There was an extremely wet water race at the end. See photo. I have spent a great deal of time dealing with planning applications. We live in an AONB and how lucky we are. The AONB take great care not to allow planning which will spoil the look of our beautiful landscape, for example further static caravans are no longer allowed, and wind turbines, over their dead bodies. However because in the past more cunning property developers have built large houses on previous small dwellings, the AONB planning views all development with scepticism. I feel that this makes life hard for any of the people trying to improve their small local businesses and make them competitive and also supply accommodation.. I believe the welfare of the people in the community is

as important as the beauty and that most people are not wanting to put up mansions or spoil the looks of the area.. It is however difficult to get anything bigger than a henhouse through. Also I have had requests to help with the very high business rates. It appears we were proud to say the council tax only went up by 2.5%. It seems that business rates are not now done by rateable value but also by business turnover, which rather puts the kibosh on trying to make a profit. The saga of the Loggerheads- Cadole road continues with both community councils. However as the county border crosses this area the AM from Clwyd West is having a separate meeting on 28th June in Colwyn Bay. Is this because the AMs are in different parties and don't talk to each other !!!! Have a good summer Regards Christine Evans, christinemaryevans@hotmail.com, mobile 078877749

Nature Notes At this time of year many birds stop singing while they concentrate on breeding and raising their young but not all do so. Walking in woodland on a hot and sunny day recently I was struck by the amount of bird sound, not all of which was musical. However, the fluting song of a mistle thrush rang out competing with blackcaps and the onomatopoeic calls of chiffchaffs. A buzzard mewed overhead, ravens croaked and there was the cacophony of jackdaws' ringing 'chacks'. Below, blue and coal tits could be heard while a great spotted woodpecker uttered its 'chink chink' alarm call to warn of my approach. Leaving the shade of the wood and emerging into hot sunshine I was immediately aware of a continuous buzzing sound coming from a patch of brambles now flowering. Bumblebees and hoverflies were frantically flying from flower to flower gathering nectar and pollen. The vast majority of the bumblebees were the yellow banded, orange tailed Bombus pratorum but there were lesser numbers of the white tailed B. lucorum and the orange coated B. pascuorum. Among the hoverflies were the drone fly, which emits a sound similar to honey bees, the larger blue and white Volucella pellucens and the yellow striped Episyrphus balteatus (no English names I'm afraid). There were also many small black flies which I could not identify and it all added up to a nostalgic sound of summer not often heard these days. Along the path a golden-ringed dragonfly

continually flew back and forth hawking for insects and passing within inches of my face. Serenaded by chaffinches, willow warblers and wrens, I eat my lunch along side a pony pasture resplendent with yellow birdsfoot trefoil complemented with the blue of speedwell and meadow cranesbill, violet self-heal and pink orchids. Common blue butterflies flitted continuously and sometimes spiralled upwards in nuptial dance with the duller females. Large skippers were here with brown argus, meadow browns, dingy skippers and a solitary dark green fritillary. Large red damselflies were flying in tandem looking for a place to oviposit, the male using its tail-end claspers to grip the female behind its head. There were also many bumblebees but it was noticeable that here they were mostly the black, orange tailed B. lapidarius. Grasshoppers fed in the grass and, while I sat, a seven spot ladybird paused from hunting greenflies to land on my knee where it was joined by a green lacewing and then a small blue-green weevil with the impressive name of Phyllobius pomaceus. A sharp prick on my arm alerted me to a mosquito which had pierced my skin and was filling itself with blood. . A small rodent found dead on the road was instantly identified as a shrew by its sharp pointed snout. Only 2½ inches (64mm) long with a 1½ (40mm) tail it was a pygmy shrew, our smallest mammal. Voracious insect eaters, they will
