Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Our meeting on May 10th took the usual form - business, a show update followed by a talk. The talk, given by master beekeeper Mr Critchley of Cilcain, proved very detailed, informative and inspiring. Beginning with some excellent pictures and a precise explanation of the life cycle of bees Mr Critchley followed by explaining the intricacies of the working of a beehive. This proved to be an inspirational talk by such an expert in his field. Many questions followed and maybe more members are now considering this fascinating a productive hobby. Our next meeting which will be on Monday June 14th is a 'Yellow Book Garden' visit to Philip Hunt's home in Northop. Details from the Secretary but booking is essential by Saturday June 12th. Thank you. Hon Show Secretary Mr David Jones 810511

Community Council News -May Meeting Llanferres Community Council Meeting May 13th 2010 Apologies: Cllr Rob Jones School Governor`s Report Cllr. M Holland, Llanarmon yn Ial It is essential that the pupil total is maintained.(81). The school will be publicised via a new prospectus and website. A competition to design a logo for the website will be held in the school. The school budget for 2010/2011 is an improvement on the previous financial year and should be similar for the next three years. This stability should give both staff and parents a degree of confidence for the immediate future. There are currently vacancies for parent governors. Reports have been received that youngsters have been seen climbing on the new shelter and on the school roof. It must be clear that this practice is very dangerous, particularly on the fragile roof of the hall. Meeting Open to the Public The absence of a cycle track on the plan submitted for the field adjacent to the school was raised. Mr Almond, Chairman, explained that this question may be revisited if and when the purchase of the field was completed. Chairman`s Report Cllr John Almond presented his 2009/2010 Report which outlined the Council`s achievements and frustrations during the year. Particularly satisfying were the meetings with Dr Mohammed

Mehmet, Chief Executive of Denbighshire County Council. The councillors perusal of documents, attendance at meetings, including training sessions, are on the increase, which suggests that in the future the role of Community Councils may be extended. The Chairman thanked County Councillor Christine Evans for her support, Mrs Gwyneth Dillon, Clerk, for all her work and expressed his appreciation of the reliable attendance and work of the Community Councillors. Mr Almond also thanked the members of the public for their attendance. Cllr Rob Armstrong proposed a vote of thanks to Cllr Almond. Election of Chairman Cllr John Almond was elected. Election of Vice Chairman Cllr David Jones was elected. Committees on which the Community Council has representation:- All councillors were re-elected. The Minutes of the meeting held on the 8th April 2010 were accepted and signed. Matters Arising Highways. Cllr Christine Evans reported that the planned road works for this year will be funded. Roads in Maeshafn will be included. However, part of the road passing the former Youth Hostel is the responsibility of Flintshire CC who will be contacted about its condition. The bus timetable in Maeshafn has been repaired.

Local news A founder member of the Llanferres Gardening Club has died at the age of 93. Audrey Raba was born in Llangollen and brought up on the Wirral before moving with her late husband Vaclav to their bungalow in Rectory Lane in 1972. She loved the large garden and the superb view and it was not long before she went about setting up the gardening club as it is now. In 2007 she was immensely proud to have been asked to open the annual show and even then, at the age of 90, she still carried off trophies. Audrey was a very active woman, a member of the W.I. and Bowls Club and at 91 was still driving. She died in Fron Yw Nursing Home, Llandyrnog, on Monday May 17 and leaves two sons, Tony and Mike, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Tony and Mike would like to thank the friends and neighbours in the village for all their kind support for mum, particularly over the last 18months as her health deteriorated. We won't embarrass people by naming names but you know who you are.

Maeshafn CC News Well, so much for amateur weather forecasts. Apart from one evening when it was so cold our fielders reported blue fingers, we have played every match so far in May. Unprecedented in the (brief) history of Maeshafn Cricket Club. As I type this, we are 2nd in the North Wales League 6 - behind Llangollen. We have won our first three league matches, mainly on our bowling rather than batting, which is not bad at all. In the midweek league I suspect we will finish 2nd bottom, as the standard we have faced so far has mainly been on another planet compared with ours.

13th May - Carmel (47 for 2) v. Maeshafn Midweek XI (45 all out) - lost. 15th May (NWCL) - Bodedern 2nds (73 all out) v Maeshafn (75 for 6) - won 7-3. 19th May - Maeshafn Midweek XI (55) v Asian CC (128 all out) - lost. Remaining fixtures for May/June::

30th May - Rhewl 2nds v Maeshafn 2nd June Maeshafn Midweek XI v Carmel 4-6th June - On Tour 9th June Asian CC v Maeshafn Midweek XI 25th April - Carmel CC Friendly XI (151 12th June - Shotton 2nds v Maeshafn all out) v Maeshafn Friendly XI 19th June - Maeshafn v Llangollen 2nds (119 all out) - lost. 22nd June Red Lion v Maeshafn Midweek XI 28th April - Buckley 2nds (97 for 7) v 27th June - Northop 20/20 Tournament Maeshafn Friendly XI (96 all out) - lost. In the league the game is completely 1st May (NWCL) - Maeshafn (69 for 9) different to the midweek version v. Ruthin 2nds (68 all out) - won 6-4. midweek cricket is 20/20 and weekend cricket is 90 overs split between 4th May - Maeshafn Midweek XI (130 the two teams. for 6) v. Red Lion Handbridge (75 all out) - won. Traditionally Maeshafn have struggled in midweek competitions, mainly 8th May (NWCL) - Castell Alun 2nds because the standard is so good (63 all out) v Maeshafn (138 all out) compared to our standard. However we - won 8-2. actually won our first ever competitive midweek match in May, which has taken 3 years to achieve!

Maeshafn CC News At weekends, there is a lot more scope for batsmen with a more patient approach to the game, who stay around at the wicket for long periods of time dotting balls, soaking up the bowling and allowing the lower order to go in and hit runs. That's the theory anyway.. We are heading off to Cambridge on tour in a weeks time, which should be great fun, playing Wisbech Town CC 4th XI and a village side called Old Newton CC. Touring is always an experience, and this year we have special blue caps to go out to pubs and bars in that officially identify us as Maeshafn Cricket Club. We are taking Derek Parsons with us as our gift to the hosting team.

Maeshafn CC is sponsored by www.businessbusstop.com midweek matches - 6.30pm starts anyone fancying pitting their wits against good quality bowling and batting, please get in touch. This year we are running a "worst excuse for missing a match" competition. The current leader is Rhun "Penblwydd Hapus" Jones, who has used the "I've got to go to a birthday party" excuse so many times he has forgotten which Aunt/ Nephew/Cat has or hasn't had a birthday yet! Dr Christine's letter I was waiting for the outcome of the election earlier last week with great interest. The result was like Queen Anne's death took a long time in coming, with false alarms. I was worried that Gordon Brown would do a Robert Mugabe and cling onto power despite not getting the votes of the populace, but thankfully, with I suspect a bit of nudging from John Prescott and others, he got the message and bowed out with, what I must say, some dignity. So we are now governed by the Conserable or Liberative party, or even the Condems. Let us see how it goes. The Llanarmon Youth Club, which does have some of the 11 to 15 years olds from Llanferres in it, is going strong. They come as they go to the same school in Ruthin and I am happy to have them. We had a trip up Snowdon on 8th May. There were 8 youths and 8 adults. The train could only get to Rocky Valley stop, 2/3rds of the way up just before the steep bit, as the winds were too high, over 50mph, to get to the top. So we split up into 3 groups. I was a group of one who went back down in the train. A second group found the climb up too hard with the gale so came down the path by the railway. 11 went to the top taking 1&1/2 hours well done to them. Emma T nearly got blown off the steps at the top. Then the fit adults, (2), took the Pyg track down and the rest the Miners with the 2 Urdd mountain team leaders. We paid for 1 and got 3, well worth the money. All were very fit, rather dishy young men. Tracy [Croft] nearly fell down the mountain but was saved by a passer-by. Glenys Jones was a miracle and sailed up and down despite being the oldest by far. However we all enjoyed it and I am thinking of doing the High Wire in Snowdonia in

the Autumn, if enough of the youths are keen. The camping with the Scouts on 12th and 13th June has some spare places so if you are interested I can send you a form. The cost is ÂŁ5 for food and will be 2 days of fun and games. Also there is canoeing at my hut on the river Dee, at Trevalyn, Rossett, and the archery still to come in June and July I also arranged, as a Denbighshire corporate parent, for the 'Looked after Children' to go abseiling this last weekend at Loggerheads, thanks to Frank Hill and Dave who ran it for 12 of them and some of the carers. These are kids who are 'in care' or fostered and they had a great time, the lads were brash and a bit scared and the star of the show was a snippet of a girl who went first and then the boys realised they had to have a go, not to lose face. We all had ice creams at the end and it was a great day. I have done 2 trips with highways to look at roads and the Cadole to Maeshafn road is definitely being done this year up to the Quarry. I hope also Maeshafn village itself, but that I can't promise. There is a meeting 21st May about the Loggerheads to Cadole parking with the trunk road agency. We will see if there are any further developments in this long running saga. I am looking into empty houses with Wendy Barnsley, the Empty Housing officer. If you know of houses which have been empty for over 6 months can you let me know. The council just needs to try and get them back into use either by rental, selling or a combination of both. Have a lovely early summer. Love Christine christinemaryevans@hotmail.com, mobile 078877749

Nature Notes The warm weather of the last week or so has certainly had a dramatic effect on wild life. One can stand and almost watch the leaves growing on the trees. The fields and hedgerows are ablaze with flowers and butterflies are appearing. In a two hour walk, on a warm but somewhat overcast morning, I identified nine species of butterfly including a holly blue, which is still flying a little later than usual. Numbers are not, as yet, high as I only had thirty one specimens but it is a good start. I suppose most people know about birds being territorial and protecting their 'patch' from other birds, particularly ones of their own species but I suspect it is less well known that butterflies can sometimes do likewise. I have watched a butterfly patrolling a particular beat and attacking any intruder of its own species that dares to invade their domain. An aerial dog fight takes place but, as far as I have been able to make out, the resident insect usually succeeds in driving away the invader. They sometimes investigate a member of another species but usually do not bother to try to drive it away. At the moment there is a plethora of wild flowers in bloom and prominent amongst them are buttercups which often cover pasture fields with a carpet of yellow. They are so widespread that we scarcely give them a glance and are, therefore, not always aware that there are several species, each with their own individual

characteristics. The most common is the creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens). Low growing and spreading by rooting runners, this is the one that invades our lawns. Rather taller and favouring more open ground is the meadow buttercup (R. Acris) with its more open lobed leaves. Rather similar is the bulbous buttercup (R.bulbosus) which has down turned sepals and its stem base is swollen, giving the impression of growing from a bulb which it does not. Less noticeable is the goldilocks buttercup (R. Auricomus) which only flowers in April and May. Preferring limestone regions, it is nationally quite rare but we have it in our district. The leaves at the base are kidney shaped and completely different from those higher up the stem which become progressively more finely divided until those near the top of the stem are almost thread like. The flowers are seldom completely formed, having anything from 0 to 5 petals and often look as though part of the flower has been eaten. It is regarded as an indicator of ancient woodland or an ancient hedgerow. All buttercups, when fresh, are poisonous to horses and cattle but are seldom eaten as they have a bitter taste. However, the toxins they contain are quickly degraded by drying so buttercups dried in hay are harmless. It is nice to feel the warmth after the long winter and long may it continue.
