Church News Services in October 4th 8th 11th 18th 25th

Holy Communion at 10 a.m. Evening Harvest Service at 7 p.m. Family Service at 10 a.m. Holy Communion at 10 a.m. Holy Communion at 10 a.m.

We have a new Rector! The Rev'd Adrian Copping took his first service in St Berres on Sunday 13th September - a lovely and well attended service. We shall continue with our 10 a.m. services throughout October and possibly November. However it is impossible for Adrian to take 5 services every Sunday and so our services will almost certainly change. Quiet Evening There will be a quiet evening in Church at 8 p.m. on Monday 19th October. The format is quiet contemplation from 8 to 8.30, listening to Gregorian chant, followed by a very short service of Compline, taken by the Rector. Llanferres Church is very special under these circumstances. We hope to continue with Quiet Evenings on the third Monday of the month. Harvest Service The Rector will conduct an evening Harvest Service on Thursday 8th October at 7.00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served following the service. Lost China! Following 'Fun in the Garden', Daryl & Patrick were left with two items of china. One is a large oval 'Indian Tree' design plate and the other is a circular Portmeirion 'Botanical' design plate. Coffee Morning Daryl Austin, with the aid of the Inner Wheel Club of Mold, will be holding a coffee morning on Thursday 22nd October at 19 Cae Gwyn, 10 a.m. to noon, in aid of the Children with Leukaemia Charity.

Maeshafn CC Maeshafn Cricket Club News - end of season 2009. What a season it has been. We have played 29 games this year (including friendlies), winning 13 of them, drawing 1 and losing 14. However I think in all the leagues in North Wales no other team has managed to narrowly lose as many games as we have (teams score points according to how close games are). We managed to beat teams at the top and bottom of the division, and narrowly lose to both the promoted teams from our division, and other teams have looked slightly nervous at playing us, partly because of Dave William's terrifying glare, but also because we have scored a lot of runs. Maeshafn finished 5th in the league Players of worthy note from Llanferres and Maeshafn as follows: Dave Williams - Captain (resides in Maeshafn - known for throwing empty John Smiths cans at passing walkers

whilst inebriated - you'll know who he is if you walk through Maeshafn with a woolly hat on). Lost the toss more times than I care to remember with his "tails for Wales" theory... Steve Pugh - Wicketkeeper (resides in the Miners Arms) - well known for his ability to stop a cricket ball with his teeth. Tom Hall - Bowler and occasional batsman (Llanferres) - possibly going to win a league award this year for his figures - fast, efficient and ruthless. Pete Gresty - Batsman and self-critic (ex-Llanferres) - sledges himself, thus saving the opposition from doing so. Sean Thomas - Batsman and scorer (Llanferres) - plays cameo roles, but best this year was 15 not out against Rhewl when we had collapsed. Rhun Jones - Batsman (lives off the land) - turns up, drinks heavily, gets posted back through the cat flap to his wife.

Aled Jones - Batsman (Lower Maeshafn) - although diminuitive in stature, Dr Jones packs a fearsome punch with a cricket bat. We are having our annual dinner in the Druid on the Friday 16th October with awards/presentations. Anyone welcome to attend. Club AGM will be in November. The club will also be having a coaching session at Old Trafford in November hopefully with a Lancashire CC professional, and a pre-Xmas net session to stretch muscles before

training begins in earnest in January. I will put details in the News & Views when we have them. Again it would be good to hear from potential players for next year. You can email me on jbfagan@tenpercent.co.uk for details, or alternatively call 01352 810373. Jonathan Fagan, Secretary.

Marshals take the glory again ! Over 50 locals and not so locals took up the challenge and gave up their precious time to marshal the Merida mountain bike event on Sept 20th. Well over 900 riders including Rebecca Romero our double Olympic gold medallist took part, covering the 100km of track supervised by our team, both young and old. Result ÂŁ2000 was raised to support keeping the children's playing field open and rows of smiles from all those involved. Feedback from the Merida national series organiser John Lloyd and the riders could not have been more positive. Competitors to a person commented on both the quality of the marshalling and how they appreciated the encouragement they were given throughout the day. John Lloyd stated that this was the best Ruthin round to date and is certainly looking

LLANFERRES VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Would like to inform the Community that if it had not been for Mr Bob Barton’s help, time and effort over the last twelve months the job of getting Denbighshire County Council to refurbish the heating and toilets in the Hall would have been harder. Although the money from his Member's Priority Fund would only have paid for one of these items, Mr Barton convinced the Council that the Hall in Llanferres needed both new heating and toilets. PARENTS - DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE IN THE EVENINGS? A number of children have been spotted on the roof of the school and Village Hall recently, and they have disrupted events in the Village Hall. Memorial plaque I recently removed (with permission) the memorial plaque from the wooden playhouse bought in memory of Keith Beales, as the playhouse is in disrepair. My idea is that I fix the plaque on to the seat by the memorial stone which overlooks the school and is close to where Keith lived, I have approached the Community Council and are awaiting their comments. Digital Switchover Are You Ready For The Digital TV Switchover? Beware of rogue traders - it seems there is a scam going round trying to frighten people into buying a new aerial. There is a simple test to check your aerial. All you need to do is visit teletext page 284. A regular test pattern of white squares indicates your aerial does not need a check. Repeat this test on BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. S4C is tested on page 484. I got a screenful of squares on all four channels. Have you read the pink Digital TV leaflets sent earlier this year? I thought I had but I clearly missed this aerial check - it is clearly highlighted on p11 of 'Your guide to the digital TV switchover in Wales.' It is a mine of information - maybe that's the problem, packing so much into 20 pages. It also states that you need to convert every TV set that you wish to continue watching from. I must admit the news that after switchover video and analogue DVD recorders will not be able to record one digital channel while you watch another grated with me. To me it makes sense to video the programme you are missing on another channel. Most of us in this area use the Llanarmon-yn-Iâl transmitter - it can be seen from the Druid's car park on top of the hill. It is a relay transmitter, part of the

Moel y Parc transmitter group. It will be switching over in two stages. Switchover and Re-Tune Dates: 28th October BBC2 analogue is switched off. You will need to re-tune your digital equipment to pick up the available channels; 25th November the remaining analogue channels are switched off. You will need to re-tune your digital equipment again to pick up additional channels. The dates if you’re tuned to the Winter Hill transmitter (if you get Granada and BBC North West instead of HTV and BBC Wales) are 4th Nov for Stage 1 and 2nd Dec for Stage 2. If you’re 75 or over or an eligible disabled person you will be able to obtain extra support from the Switchover Help Scheme - ring 0800 4085903. For further information or help contact Digital UK - ring 08456 505050 or check the website www.digitaluk.co.uk/ - I will also be happy to check through my guides for you. Please note my email address (I am still a Community Councillor in Llanarmon-yn-Iâl and also in Llandegla) - you can contact me at: cllrbobbarton@yahoo.co.uk Cllr Bob Barton - 01824 780872

Nature Notes Regular readers may recall that in my July Nature Notes I commented on the number of painted lady butterflies which had migrated here in late May and early June. These subsequently bred and in August, a little later than I expected, they were widespread. They were followed by an abundance of red admirals also the progeny of an earlier continental influx. However, it was noticeable how quickly they all but disappeared with the onset of cold nights which occurred from the 10th September. The painted ladies will probably have died off as will most of the red admirals although a few of the later may manage to overwinter in ivy or garden sheds or even, sometimes, behind curtains in houses.

The lack of daylight triggers the tree to produce a hormone which causes the leaf to grow a hard tissue at the point where the leaf joins the twig. This cuts off the supply of sap and water to the leaf and the chlorophyll, which gives plants their green colour, disintegrates and allows the colour of other chemicals present in the leaves to show. Leaves of different species contain different pigments which is why they show different colours.
