Llanferres Parish Gardening Club JULY Instead of an indoor meeting a group of seventeen members went to Leeswood Green Farm on the evening of Monday 6th July. Although the weather had scattered thunderstorms or heavy rain during the day in parts of our area, the evening visit was blessed with dry warm but overcast skies. Ann Saxon, the owner, has quite a varied garden, lawns, borders, orchard, vegetable garden and quite an extensive hay meadow. We were free to wander around and able to see several varieties of campanula in full flower together with a good range of other herbaceous plants, roses and even a medlar tree in the orchard. Ann then provided refreshments – savoury and sweet- to close another successful garden visit.
AUGUST Our August meeting, as in past years, was to arrange the final details of our Annual Show which will be on Saturday 5th September. Under the guidance of Show Secretary David Jones, full details were made for arranging the hall tables on Friday evening through to the auction of produce at 4pm on Saturday. Exhibitors are reminded that their entry sheet and details MUST be received by 6pm on Wednesday 2th September by Mrs J. Roberts, 7 Tyn Llan, Llanferres. Also please note Show Rules on back page of the Show Schedule. Good luck to everyone. . Hon Show Secretary Hon Secretary David Jones Mrs Joan Almond É 01352 810511 É 01352 810808

Loggerheads Country Park The natural beauty of Loggerheads and the surrounding area is renowned, with visitors flocking here since the 1920s when Crosville Motor Services began running bus services from Birkenhead to Loggerheads and established the Tea Gardens. In 1974, Crosville sold the land to Clwyd County Council and it became Loggerheads Country Park (now owned by Denbighshire and Flint-
shire County Councils). The Country Park is now managed by Denbighshire Countryside Service for its ecological value as well as for recreation but it remains incredibly popular with visitors and is a key feature of the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Denbighshire Countryside Service have commissioned Heritage and Tourism Consultant Ian Parkin and myself Lorna Jenner, a local Environmental Consultant, to prepare a Management Plan for Loggerheads Country Park. This will include a Vision and Development Strategy for the next 10 years. Loggerheads means many things to many different

Loggerheads Country Park people – lovely walks with stunning views, a beautiful place to sit and reflect, a wonderful place to bring the children or grandchildren, fascinating industrial heritage, a rich geodiversity and biodiversity, a great place to walk the dog. We are surveying visitors during the school holidays and at busy weekends to find out what they think about Loggerheads but we feel the opinions of the local community are equally important. Undoubtedly local people value and appreciate the beautiful countryside on their doorstep but you may also have concerns about visitor pressure or you may wish to become more involved in the running of the park through volunteering. We would like to give you the opportunity to voice your opinions in more detail and find out what Loggerheads means to you, the local community.

Llanferres Senior Citizens On August 4th, together with Llanferres W.I., we visited Ruthin Castle. After a walk round the grounds we went inside for “Afternoon Tea”, and after being given a brief history of the castle we went into the Medieval Banqueting Hall for some entertainment. This was presided over by our chosen ‘Baron’ and ‘Baroness’ and consisted of some singing, poetry, a quiz and a demonstration of clog dancing. It was a very pleasant afternoon, as we were lucky to have a fine afternoon. Our next meeting is on September 8th in the Village Hall at 2.00 p.m., when the speaker is from the Food Standards and Food Safety Agency. We are an informal, friendly group who meet for a talk, a chat, a cup of tea, a ‘bun’ and a raffle on the second Tuesday of the month. We are always pleased to see new faces of the “senior” variety!! Llanferres Playing Field Green Pennant Award 2009/2010 For the third year running the Playing Field has been awarded the Green Pennant. The Green Pennant Award is a national scheme that recognises high quality green spaces in England and Wales that are managed by voluntary and community groups. The Playing Field received a glowing report this year; the judges commented: “This is an exceptional site which clearly demonstrates the principles and practice underlying the Green Pennant Award Scheme. Thanks go to the volunteers who work on the committee and those who help at Working Parties., and of course the Merida Marshals. (see opposite). The Association desperately needs your help to continue the good work - so if you or your family use the Park please do volunteer .

Calling All Local Marshals Old And New Following the success of the last five years it is intended that the village and its friends marshal the above event again, to raise money for the upkeep of the playing fields. To get near to the target figure of £2250 we need 50+ marshals to cover the various local checkpoints. We are looking for people to commit either the morning or afternoon (or all day if you can spare the time) on the 20th Sept to help out. No experience or special knowledge is needed, so don’t worry if you’ve never done it before. Friends already on our contact list will be emailed in the near future to ask for their support but if you want to make sure you get involved early sign up on the sheet at the L – Llanferres Druid or email on the address below.

Llanferres Churchyard The Parochial Church Council is aware that improved maintenance of the churchyard, especially the area with standing gravestones that is cut periodically using a strimmer, would be welcomed by those who have a relative interred in the churchyard or who otherwise value the area for its ambience. Much of the grass cutting is carried out by a contractor and the cost is in the order of ÂŁ1,000; part of this cost is met by fees, the Community Council and donations, but the remainder of the cost is met by the Church from collections and fund raising activities. The area currently used for burials is cut on a voluntary basis by a village family and the PCC is very grateful to them for the work they carry out. Other maintenance work is carried out by volunteer working parties - you may have noticed that the historic sundial has recently been attended to and now tells the time accurately. The family who cut the area currently used for burials have found that some of the area which is strimmed can be cut by a mower and the improvement to the area since it has been cut in this manner is obvious.
They are able to cut the limited extra area because the graves have headstones but not kerbstones and thus there is access for their mower. The family have said they would be willing to cut further areas if the kerbstones were removed. If kerbstones were to be removed, then that would be done over a period of time because of the work and costs involved. But the PCC does not want to take any further action until it is clear that its plans to facilitate grass cutting by the removal of kerbstones (the headstones would not be removed) would be well received by the relatives of those buried there and the other residents of Llanferres. Ideally a relative of each person buried should be contacted but there are insufficient records to make that possible; however contact will be made with as many relatives as possible. The plan is also dependant on receiving permission from the Diocese. Your comments are invited. Please give them to either Josh Griffiths or Brian Skelhorn. (contact details on back page)

Nature Notes Rivers running in spate erode the banks on the outside of bends and the gravel and silt gets carried downriver in the tumultuous water until it is deposited on the inside of a bend where the water runs slower and the debris precipitates to form a sand or gravel bank. This happened on the River Alyn below Plymog where a significant sized bank has occurred. But the river also deposited the seed of that most insidious of alien weeds Himalayan Balsam brought down from heavy infestations upriver. Our local group is making sterling efforts to eradicate Balsam from our area and have greatly reduced it but it is an uphill struggle when lazy landowners further upstream just let it thrive. If it is not controlled acres of farmland could become inundated with the weed and be lost as productive land. I cleared all the Himalayan Balsam from the above gravel bank and it has quickly become colonised by many native plants - I counted at least twenty three species - including redshank, knotgrass, brooklime, pineapple mayweed, red dead nettle, woundwort, thyme-leaved speedwell and two species of buttercup. But I also found several plants of Monkey flower (Mimulus guttatus) which is also an alien. First introduced into Britain, as a garden plant, in the early part of the nineteenth century it quickly 'escaped' and was first found growing wild near Abergavenny. Since then it has colonised much of the country and could easily be mistaken for a native. It is not invasive like Himalayan Balsam so is unlikely to become a nuisance and has become a colourful addition to our flora.
While on the gravel bank I was frequently 'buzzed' by a gold ringed dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii). This dragonfly is easily identified by its black and gold body which is the longest of all the hawker dragonflies that hunt insects by 'hawking' up and down the river. It is a species mainly confined to the western part of Britain. Much in evidence at the present time is the six-spot burnet, a day flying moth. It has black fore wings with red spots and bright-carmine underwings and its larval food plant is mainly bird's-foot trefoil. The black and red colouration acts as a warning to birds that this insect is poisonous to them. The larvae, which hatch in September, hibernate over the winter, resume feeding in spring and then build a silken cocoon in which to complete their metamorphosis before hatching as adult moths in late July and August. Bird's-foot trefoil gets its name not only from its trefoil(clover like) leaves but also because its seed heads resemble a bird's claw. It is the food plant also of the common blue and the dingy skipper butterflies and it is an anomaly that although the blue was fairly plentiful in May/June I saw very few dingy skippers. Recently I saw a grayling butterfly in our area. This is sometimes questioned by some people as the grayling is seen mainly as a coastal species but I usually see one or two specimens at a couple of locations locally. What was a surprise, however, was to discover, in mid-July, a pair of ringlet butterflies as I have never seen them before locally.
