News & Views 3

Welcome Welcome to the November edition of News & Views. It’s just over 8 weeks until Christmas so its time to think about some Christmas shopping at the Craft Fair in the Village Hall on Friday 13th November. The following Friday 20th November is the family fun Bingo night which will fund the OAP’s Christmas Lunch at the Druid (see page 7). There are great prizes to be won for the most festive outfit so we look forward to seeing any ‘ba humbugs’ or Santa's little helpers. Don’t forget to book your place at the Christmas Lunch on Saturday 5th December (see page 21) . Enclosed with this month’s News & Views is an envelope asking for any contribution you would like to make

towards its funding. The cost to produce News & Views in its current form is about £370 per issue. A large part of this is covered by our advertisers and help from the Community Council, but we also rely heavily on donations and fund raising to meet the whole cost each year, so if you can help, it is very much appreciated. Envelopes can be left at Loggerheads Garage, at 2 Cae Gwyn or we can collect. If you would like to send a festive message to local friends and neighbours in next month’s News & Views please let us have the details by 20 November. Paul & Siobhan

Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club Once more Mr. Shiel spoke to us, this time about the Jubilee Tower on Moel Fammau. His enthusiasm about the development of the Tower from the 1800s through to this day made his subject so very interesting. In September the group had a lovely trip to Merseyside where we sailed on the River Mersey. See page 18 for pictures. On November 10th Joan Williams will talk to us about Emily Pankhurst an the Suffragettes. Please join us at 2.15pm.

RED TELEPHONE KIOSKS Readers will be aware that the Community Council owns the two red Telephone Kiosks in Tafarn y Gelyn and Maeshafn. These iconic structures are ascetically pleasing but currently serve no practical purpose. The Community Council are anxious to find a useful function for each of the Kiosks and would welcome ideas or comments from members of the public and wish to encourage community involvement. Some tentative suggestions have been:An information point; A 'put and take' book depository; The site for a defibrillator; Site for sale of local produce (e.g. eggs, flowers, fruit, vegetables) with an 'honesty box'.

Can you think of any other uses that you would like to see applied? These Kiosks are community assets and your opinions are IMPORTANT. Please contact any Community Councillor (names and telephone numbers near the back of this magazine) or/and come to the next Community Council meeting in the Village Hall, on Thursday 12th November at 7.30pm and take part in the discussion. It will be the first item of the meeting and you can leave immediately after, if you wish, although you are very welcome to stay for the rest of the meeting. THANK YOU.

LLANFERRES AND COLOMENDY ART GROUP Our tenth Exhibition, held at the Loggerheads Country Park, was a huge success. We were pleased to have displayed and sold even more paintings than in previous years. As well as our consistently supportive local people, visitors came from Merseyside and Cheshire, possibly encouraged by the Sunday Dog Show which was a delight. We received the most favourable of comments regarding the standard of work and the range of subjects. This year the votes for the public's favourite painting were so close, with just a few votes separating the top four ; a recount was necessary. The painting gaining most votes was ' Kevin - the cow with attitude ' by Pat Armstrong, very closely followed by 'Dandelions ' by Jane Clarke and ' Autumn ' by Pat Armstrong and then ' date we have raised over £2162 for Bruce ' by Betty Cook. various charities. Poor Vodafone reception in Llanferres. If you have started experiencing problems with your Vodafone service in the past 6 months don’t despair you may think you are alone but the good news is you’re not! I know of at least 6 other users who have complained of the same issue – people ringing them complaining of loud clicks on the line, delayed response and generally very difficult to hear. If you ring the help line they will try and fob you off and say it is your handset. It isn’t, it’s their service but they won’t admit it and say they have no registered issues or record of other complaints. If you push them they will agree to refund the cost of a device that you can buy in the Vodafone shop to alleviate some of the problems. It costs about £100. If enough people ring up they will have to register it as a genuine service fault , eventually do something about it and tackle the cause not the symptoms. Steve Clarke

28 News & Views Charity looking for locations and funding to place Defibrillators. Charity AEDdonate are looking to team up with Schools, Local Communities, Parish Councils and Clubs to raise funds to place Defibrillators (AED’s) within them. At present in the UK just 8.6% of people who have a Cardiac Arrest outside of hospitals are saved in time, this is because there are simply not enough AED’s out there. Other countries such as Holland 21% and Norway 25% are way ahead of us. As cardiac arrest is the UK’s biggest killer AEDdonate is on a mission to increase the UK survival rate.

Noddy Holder and Jamie Richards from AEDdonate – Helping to raise funds

The charity arranges raffle prizes, local vouchers from local businesses which will generate income for the campaign, on-line personal challenges that locals can take part in if they want (anything from small runs, parachuting to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro). They also have over 3000 on-line retailers that pay commission if people follow a link on a personalised fundraising web site. AEDdonate is also looking for support from local organisations, councillors and MP’s. Kevin Turner on behalf of the charity said “it is essential that we place as many AED’s as possible out there, with the help of local communities we can do this. The existing fundraising activities means that people can fund raise by spending as they normally do on a daily basis, from buying your groceries from Asda to getting your hair cut, the campaigns get paid a small percentage and it all goes to the specific local campaign, we also support each local campaign by providing a pack including posters, collection tubs, ideas, a campaign manager and loads of support.” If you want to take part and can see this as a value to your local School, Community or Club, then please call AEDdonate directly on 01785 472224 or you can email Kevin Turner k.turner@aeddonate.co.uk

Gulls have begun to vacate their breeding marshes or moors to feed on local fields, Pink-footed geese have been reported on the Lancashire mosslands, down from their Arctic nesting habitats and readers will have noticed the increase of Starlings arriving from Scandinavia to winter here. Yet, anomalistically, I have seen evidence, in the form of newly hatched eggs, that Wood pigeons are still breeding, testament to the comparative mildness of the current weather. Queen bumblebees are still nectaring on garden flowers, whereas I would by now have expected them to have gone into hibernation - I have seen at least three species this week. There has also been a late flurry of Red admiral butterflies, suspected of being an influx from mainland Europe as they coincided with an increase of Silver Y moths. This year would seem to have been a poor year, overall, for butterflies although some species have done quite well. Particularly scarce have been our most colourful species such as Small tortoiseshell and its close relatives the Peacock, Red admiral, Comma and Painted lady which are usually plentiful in our gardens, especially when the Buddleias(Butterfly bush) are in bloom. A number of years ago the Small tortoiseshell suffered a catastrophic decline in numbers and this was attributed to parasitisation by the tiny wasp Sturmia bella. Numbers of the butterfly had increased in recent years and it was thought that this might have been due to a decrease in Sturmia

activity but one wonders if the wasp has had a population explosion and is also attacking the other members of this group. During the summer, in search of Britain's rare butterflies, I have visited the moss lands of North Shropshire, woodland in South Shropshire, the limestone escarpments of the Cotswolds and Chiltern hills, the Jurassic Coast of Dorset, Exmoor in Somerset, the Honister Pass in Cumbria and local sites. By carefully selecting the time of year to coincide with the flight period of the species I have been successful in seeing these rarities on each occasion. Most can only be found on a limited number of locations because they require very precise conditions and food sources where they form discrete colonies, very susceptible to any changes. However, what has intrigued me is that although the 'target species' have been relatively common at each site, on most occasions there have been very few other species. Sparrowhawks, as the name implies, feed mainly on small birds, often in gardens - we regularly find a ring of feathers where a kill has been made and the victim plucked. What is perhaps not so well known is that they also predate small mammals. We had an example of this when a Sparrowhawk caught and ate a Bank vole in the garden and left a ring of fur rather than feathers. We have quite a few voles in the garden and we often see them foraging under the bird feeders.
