LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club On September 20th we spent a perfect sunny day in Beaumaris and visiting Cadnant Estate with its Secret Gardens (see the photographs in the centre p;ages). At our changed October meeting Mr. Cummings came once again to speak about Pembrokeshire, but not the well-known attractions, rather the hidden secrets of the shoreline, both flora and fauna, and rock formations. Once again the photography was breath-taking. On November 8th Rhian Evans will talk about her aunt, Joyce FfoulkesParry who came from Australia to find her roots in Wales and Liverpool and served as a Queen Alexandra Nurse in World War Two. Apparently there is a connection with Llanferres! Do join us from 2.00pm
will be held in Llanferres village hall on
Please come along, you won't be asked to do anything but perhaps say you are happy to become a trustee or friend of the charity, this doesn't involve any work. Many thanks, Gareth Jaggard Secretary

Big Covert Cave Natural caves were used by humans in prehistoric times for both shelter and for human burials. The oldest known site in Wales is Pont Newydd Cave, in the Elwy valley near St. Asaph, where human (ie. Neanderthal) remains were dated to 230,000 years ago. There are a number of caves with archaeological interest in our area. Probably the most prominent is the cave in Llanarmon, near the bridge, which has a large high entrance. Closer to home we have the well-known cave in Big Covert, Maeshafn which is adjacent to the main route through the wood.
At the far end of the cave, in the socalled bone chamber, were found the remains of six burials together with some artefacts. The most interesting of the latter is probably a bronze brooch with terminals moulded in the shape of a duck (possibly dating to the first century AD). There was also a bronze plate brooch in the shape of a fish and bearing dark blue enamel on the face. There were also some fragments of charcoal but these, as well as most of the other finds, have been dispersed and we have no reliable dating for the finds. Some of the bones were transferred to the museum at Colomendy Outdoor Studies Centre, The accessible part of this cave is 70 the remainder were sent to the National metres in length and ends in a Museum of Wales. blockage. A note from your County Councillor Autumn is here and the weather is still a little unpredictable just like the aftermath of the Brexit vote. After the announcement yesterday of the Welsh Governments budgets and financial priorities for the coming year it looks as if the majority of County Councils in Wales are breathing a sigh of relief. Most are getting a small increase in their funding from Cardiff this time around instead of the year on year cuts we have been getting to date. In the last four years Denbighshire has had to find savings of ÂŁ26 million and this has certainly focused members and officers minds. This has not been such a bad thing as most savings have been found through efficiencies, the use of new technology and by doing things in different ways. No matter what happens in the future with Welsh Government funding I believe that we still have a duty to the tax payer to continue to find better ways of delivering services which at the same time help to reduce costs. Denbighshire has received an increase of 0.5% in funding which is a move in the right direction but after inflation and annual pay rises have been taken into account we will still have to find money to produce a balanced budget this year. The first of the budget meetings will be held this month and I hope to be able to let you know more in the next edition of News and Views.
Please let me know where you feel our priorities should be. Alternatively you can take the opportunity of attending one of the counties public consultations on the future direction of local government services in Denbighshire. These are currently being held around the county. There is some good news locally regarding Superfast Broad Band. After further discussions with the Regional Manager for BT it now appears that most of the properties in Tafarn Y Gelyn will have access to Super Fast Broad Band. This is after reporting last month that it looked as if the hamlet would be a not spot. New telegraph poles are appearing around the area to support the fibre optic cables and you can check to see if you will be able to get the service by visiting BT’s up graded Superfast web site. When visiting the site you will need your telephone number, including dialling code and your post code. BT have said that very few people are registering an interest in the new service in rural areas and this may effect the delivery of Superfast Broad Band in some parts of the ward ( supply and demand). If you register an interest it does not mean that you have to take up the service but it may help with the roll out. More good news in that the county will start drainage works in Forestry Road between the 7th and the 11th November. This will also involve resurfacing the worst section of the road that has been damaged by running water and there will be

A note from your County Councillor temporary traffic lights while the work is completed. Further good news for local businesses and visitors to the Loggerheads Country Park. The new overflow car park will open on Friday 21st October with an additional seventy parking spaces and a board walk down to the lower car park and facilities. This has been a long time in coming and a lot of work has been done behind the scenes to get the finance in place and the plans completed. I am a little concerned about the new entrance to the existing car park!! After some chasing DCC has now filled in the pot holes in Rectory Lane which should help the wear and tear on local residents cars. This is again good news especially as it has been completed before the winter sets in. Remembrance Sunday is fast approaching and this year I will be attending the Llanferres Service. Llanarmon Yn Ial always hold their service on the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday but I do have to alternate each year between
Llanferres and Llandegla for their morning service. I hope to see you there. Best wishes, Martyn

SHARE UPDATE Despite the summer holidays, SHARE volunteers have been kept busy collecting and sorting donations for our next set of projects. Winter is fast approaching and the refugees badly need warm clothing to help them survive the harsh conditions that they are being forced to survive in. On a more local level, we have recently started to help support fifteen refugee families by helping to furnish houses for them with furniture and white goods donated by the generous folk of North Wales. These refugee families are currently being resettled directly from camps in Lebanon to a home in either Flintshire, Wrexham or Denbighshire. Following on from the success of a couple of Share Sale days in Mold town centre, we have now opened a ‘Pre-Loved Sales Room’ at our HQ in the Old County Library Building, County Hall, Mold. We’re easy to find – just look out for the big red hand sign on the end of the building and pop along during our normal opening hours to grab a bargain! An amazing range of good quality and designer clothing, books, bric-a-brac, and toys (which are all unsuitable for refugees) are available for a donation of as little as one pound. So please come along and support us if you can! Our opening hours until Christmas are: • Monday to Wednesday from 10am-2.30pm • Wednesday evenings from 7.0pm-8.30pm You can be assured of a warm welcome, a huge smile and lots of tea, coffee and biscuits to keep you going. Lots of new friendships and connections can be made at SHARE, so why not pop down to see us sometime?

New home wanted for this fine fellow We have been adopted by a stray male kitten for whom we would like to find a good home. We've taken it to the vet and it has no microchip, we are told that he is about 3 -4 months old and we've had him vaccinated but he is apparently too young for neutering yet . He is very intelligent and affectionate but we are unable to keep him due to Dtoi's food business, proximity to a busy road and just not being cat people. We have registered him with the Cat Protection League, but he's 152nd in their queue, winter is fast approaching and their is no heating in our woodshed If there is anybody out there that would like to be adopted then please give us a call on 810362 and we will introduce you. ‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ Early in the summer I went to one of my sheds to look for some plant pots. As soon as I opened the door I was met with loud buzzing and realised I had a wasps nest. I shut the door lucky not to be stung and made a hasty retreat. The wasp has a place in nature's cycle eating a lot of harmful insect pests so I left the nest alone and the shed was "out of bounds" until September. When the nest had served it's purpose and was empty I spoke to Mrs Knight the headmistress of Llanferres School and she accepted it for the nature table. Who knows it might spark an interest in wild life in some of the young children when they see the marvel of the architecture in the nest. When the queen awakes from hibernation in Spring she will refuel with nectar from flowers. The distinctive black and yellow stripes of the wasp warns predators to leave them alone. Those that have been stung once are very unlikely to come back again to bother the wasp. When the queen has built up her strength, she will begin with the work of building her nest, this can vary in size depending on the species of wasp from about the size of a tennis ball to as big as a rugby ball and contain many rows of cells. The building is very labour intensive as wood is chewed mixed with saliva and built up tiny mouthful by mouthful and rows of cells are gradually made. All perfect shape and size and will take the queen wasp more than two weeks to construct the first of the cells, she will then lay and egg in each cell before she
has finished it. The eggs start to hatch after about five days when the queen has double the work, collecting high protein food for the young grubs and still collecting building material to finish the cells. After about two weeks each grub closes it's cell with a silk like material and turns into a pupa, another two weeks the young adults will chew their way out to become a work force to complete the nest while the queen, who up to this point has worked alone can lay more eggs and finish more cells. The young wasps as they hatch join the ever growing work force which will reach about 3,000 in a large nest. . The wasps nest is an annual thing. It is only the young queens reared in special larger cells who survive after hibernating hidden away in hollow trees or log piles. When bringing logs in during the winter it is always good practice to give them a good knock to dislodge any hibernating queen wasps or you will find one flying around your living room. This is the first year that I haven't been plagued with moles. I had an eruption of soil next to my poly tunnel early in spring. I located the run and put a good handful of old fashioned moth balls in it and closed it up. It doesn't always work but this time they haven't been back. More next time Eddie Eddie Wilde 01352 810271
