Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At our meeting on 14th October we had an illustrated talk from Mr David Cummings “The Wonderful World of Wildlife”. He showed stunning pictures of the lives and habitats of so many wild creatures from really frightening enormous crocodiles and grisly bears, to a delicate little humming bird, and so many other attractive, and not so attractive, inhabitants of our planet. On November 11th we are having a talk by Patricia Burton about Britain’s and Liverpool’s involvement in the Slave Trade. Local News The Llanferres / Colomendy Art group would like to thank you for the overwhelming support shown during our recent exhibition at the Country Park. We had almost 300 visitors and received many positive comments from a wide range of people. Mrs Betty Cook gained most votes from the public who chose their favourite painting. Betty’s pastel of ‘Tinkerbell – the donkey’ was first, Pat Armstrong’s ‘Sheep’ was second, followed by Jane Clarke’s ‘Looking after my brother’ and Marlene Clarke’s ‘Waterfall’. As winner of the public votes, Mrs Cook keeps the group trophy for a year and has chosen ‘Help for Heroes’ as our charity. They will received £220, bringing our total fundraising to £1950. The winning raffle ticket numbers were:- 317, 80, 199, 252 and 108. The Teddy’s name was Frank. As usual, the weekend was most enjoyable and yet again we are indebted to Mr Howard Sutcliffe (Officer of the AONB) who has allowed us to use this superb local facility for the last nine years. Thank you for your support and encouragement – we really do appreciate it. Pat Armstrong.

From the minutes of the meeting held on 9th October 2014:- Present: Cllr. David Jones (Chair), Cllr. John Almond, Cllr Rob Jones, Cllr. David Twomey, Cllr. Rob Armstrong, Cllr. Margaret Davies, Cllr Adrian Walls, Cllr Jac Armstrong, Cllr Yvonne Foden McCorry and the Clerk Mrs Gwyneth Dillon. The meeting started at the earlier time of 7pm to receive a report from Denbighshire County Council's BioDiversity Officer, Ms Elizabeth Webster, on the cutting regime on roadside grass verges. Ms Webster emphasised the importance of roadside verges as wildlife habitats for wild flowers, birds, mammals, reptiles and insects (including butterflies and pollinators such as bees, bumblebees and hoverflies). Recent surveys have identified over 130 species of flowering plants on roadside verges in Denbighshire. Denbighshire has a 'Roadside Verges Project' with the aims of reducing the intensity of the overall cutting regime, avoiding cutting too low and cutting only once in August/September on verges with limestone and acid grasslands with slower-growing vegetation. However, conservation has to be combined with safety, so some cutting has to be done on junctions and sharp bends to improve visibility. Cost is also an important consideration. Apologies: All Community Councillors present but County Councillor Martyn Holland sent his apologies. Declarations of Interest: None declared Meeting open to the public for ten minutes: Mr Tony King raised concerns in relation to the Aberduna Quarry 'Five Year Management Plan',(to be discussed as item 6) e.g. Who will be responsible for monitoring the

implementation of the plan; Who will pay for the work; Who will maintain the security fence; He had concerns about the future use of the quarry space. 5. County Councillors report: County Councillor Martyn Holland was not present so no report was given. 6. Aberduna Five Year Management Plan: the Community Council broadly supported the plan but would pass on Mr Kings's remarks and asked to be kept informed of any progress and could there be a meeting with the Aberduna Liaison Committee. 7. Minutes of previous Meeting: The minutes of the Meeting held on Thursday 11th September 2014 were signed as a true record after minor corrections. 8. Matters Arising: None. 9. Reports from other meetings: No reports. 10. Maintenance in the Community: The chains on the swings in Maeshafn are under review, the downspout on the bus shelter needs replacing. 11. Red Telephone Kiosk: Nothing to report. 12. Risk Assessment: The Clerk is awaiting a template from One Voice Wales on how Financial matters and Accounts can be included in the Annual risk assessment. A proper risk assessment must be done before contractors carry out any work on the 'Community Open Space' and it might be necessary to close the field briefly, while work is in progress, to protect children. 13. Field Adjacent to the School: A sample sketch of the Interpretation Board was shown to Councillors for discussion amendments were considered. It was suggested that some research could be done to discover if the field had ever been known by a local name which could be

Gardening Club News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday October 13th involved members hearing about the financial and general statistics of entries and problems associated with the Gardening Show. Financially, it was a great success in all departments with the exception of the plant stall which saw a slight drop in takings of ÂŁ3.65. All other takings were up, especially the auction receipts, where we were able to donate ÂŁ90.00 to the Llanferres Old Peoples Welfare Committee. The general statistic gave us 11 more entries than last year but these came principally from the Art and Photograph sections. After a mixed year for growing, garden vegetables, flowers and pot plant entries all suffered small drops in numbers. Members present all agreed, considering the weather, our 40th show was once again a successful event. The next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting to be held in the Village Hall on Monday November 10th and will be followed by a members buffet.

Autumn Working Party at Tafarn y Gelyn Pond It is now over 11 years since the pond in Tafarn y Gelyn was officially opened. The community worked hard to create this amenity following the opening of the new road. It is now a haven for wildlife and is managed under the umbrella of the Llanferres Recreation & Playing Field Association. The key tasks of this Autumn’s working party held on Sunday 19 October were repairing damage to the steps, decking and handrail, cutting back nettles from the banks, removing bull rushes and pond weed from the water area & painting the railings.

Maintaining the pond is a delicate balance between allowing nature to take its course which enables wildlife to thrive and the careful management that keeps invasive weeds under control. Above Tony, Mike & Matthew doing the back breaking bull rush clearance. Once the plant material is removed from the wet area it is placed close by so that any animal life still in it can find its way back to the water’s edge. Above left, Jane’s expert skills put to work on the steps & decking.

Removing a huge amount of water based plant material has opened up the wet area for next spring’s frogs and toads to spawn. Jane Clough

LLANFERRES VILLAGE HALL AGM NOVEMBER 6 Would all village organisations please note that the AGM is on Thursday 6th November and your organisation’s secretary is required to return your nomination slip to Gay by this date at the very latest. Please only nominate a rep for your group who will be willing and able to attend meetings (usually 3 per year each lasting less than an hour plus AGM of less than 3 hours). This is your forum and the way in which we support each other’s organisations. Please note the Treasurer will be retiring at this AGM and nominations for his replacement are also sought. New regulations - “The consumption of alcohol in the Village Hall will only be allowed with the specific authorisation of the Executive Committee. There shall be a right to appeal to a full committee”. To arrange consumption of alcohol, it is necessary only to contact one member of the Executive Committee (currently Mr Rob Armstrong - Chairman / Mrs Gay Headley - Secretary / Mr David Twomey - Treasurer) who will discuss your request with the other two members and respond within 24 hours. It is unlikely that any reasonable request will be refused. This amendment to our Constitution was designed to enable more people in the community to make use of our facilities whilst remaining constitutional. The original wording (not adhered to by some previous Executive Committees) provided only for the consumption of alcohol at private functions; i.e. those not open to the general public. We want our hall to be available to all who wish to use it, but we need to do things properly.

Thank you Gay Headley (Secretary)

Local News FOOD RECYCLING REMINDER The Denbighshire Recycling contractors would like to remind local residents that all food wastage

This has become a health issue for those collecting the waste - a bad enough job as it is!! ( If you run out of bags then ask or tie a message to bin) or call 01824 706101 to order some more - they’ll be delivered very quickly to your home. Also another issue arising is that out of date food still in its package is being put in the orange bin. Apparently damage is being caused to expensive machinery that deals with food only wastage. Should any culprits be spotted then their bin will be tagged as a reminder if this ignored then collection of their waste will cease - with a followup visit from the supervisor!

A note from your County Councillor We have had another two full days of budget meetings at County Hall so far this month with a further two more planned before the end of October. To date we have identified nearly six million pounds of savings and changes but these have yet to be finally approved. I expressed concern at the beginning of this process that because of the way Welsh Government fund and control a lot of what local government does through direct grants, that the final figure to be cut from our budget may be more than the announced nine million. Sadly I was right and we are starting to hear about further cuts in such things as direct grants for education and rural development funding to name but a few. Welsh Government has decided what its priorities are for the coming year and local government is certainly not one of them. At the last school governors meeting the head reported that they were having to regularly clear the playing field of dog poo. As we all know dog poo carries certain viruses that are very harmful to children and on behalf of the Governors, children and parents can I ask that dog owners please refrain from walking their pets on the school playing field. I have requested a new multi use litter bin and asked that it is sited at the entrance to the park so that it can be used by dog owners as

well. The bin will then be emptied by the county council on black bin days. So far this month I have attended both budget meetings, the monthly full council meeting, planning, partnership scrutiny, social services and well being and corporate equality. I have also attended Llanarmon and Llandegla Community Council meetings, the AGM of the Denbighshire Enterprise Agency, Ysgol Bro Famau School governors and a concert at St Teclas Church Llandegla. I took the opportunity to attend the Armed Forces Covenant day at the town hall in Rhyl where a dozen or more organisations that help ex military personal with support were represented. It was sad that it was not better attended and I think we still have a long way to go in advertising such events and targeting those who would benefit from them the most. I must admit that I am not counting the shopping days to Christmas but I hope that I will see you in the run up to Christmas at some of the events in the village. Best wishes, Martyn

Nature Notes Although autumn is well upon us with the trees changing into the browns and golden hues of the season, it seems that summer has not yet fully departed. Early in October there were five species of butterfly to be seen in our garden (Red admiral, Small tortoiseshell, Comma, Small white and Speckled wood) and even as I write Red Admirals and Small tortoiseshells are appearing on warm days. The Speckled wood is not that unusual as, being multi-brooded, it can be seen any time from March through to October. It is unique amongst British butterflies in that it can overwinter either in the larval or the pupal stage. Only last week I was sent a photograph of a quite large white moth (about 50cm or 2 inch wing span) that had appeared in the porch of a house. It was easily identified as a Swallow-tailed moth which can vary in colour from white to pale-yellow with two dark lines running diagonally through the wings. It gets its name from tail-like projections on the edge of the wing most distant from the body, known as the termen. It is a quite a common moth but what is unusual is that it normally flies in July. I have searched through my books and found references to it occasionally turning up late in the season, for reasons unexplained, and there is a record of one having been captured at Gravesend on October 22nd 1904. A lady rang to say that she had seen a large, light-green caterpillar with a red horn on its rear end, crawling across a path and wondered what it could be. I am pretty sure it is the caterpillar of the Poplar hawk moth

whose 'horn' can vary from cream to red in colour. It is another common moth whose caterpillars feed on a wide variety of tree leaves including poplar. At this time of year it will be looking for a place to pupate, below the soil surface, and they are known to sometimes travel some distance from where they have been feeding. Some days our garden hosts many birds but on others there are none and their absence can probably be explained by a female Sparrowhawk which sometimes sits on the bird table or our neighbour's trellis arch. The female is brown on the wings and back while the male(tiercel) is bluishgrey but both have pale chests with brown bars, yellow eyes and long yellow legs. The female is 25% larger than the male but probably twice its weight, not uncommon with birds of prey. The male feeds on small birds up to the size of a blackbird but the female can take prey up to the size of a Woodpigeon. Numbers of this bird plummeted in the 1950s and 1960s due to the use of Organochlorine insecticides such as Aldrin, Dieldrin and DDT. Absorption of these chemicals caused very thin egg shells, which broke during incubation, and in some intense agricultural areas the Sparrowhawk was wiped out. Since the chemicals were banned it has gradually increased and is probably back to normal numbers. Some people blame Sparrowhawks for the decline in small bird numbers but scientific investigations do not support that belief.
